Jamison Warzinski had a crush on Amber since middle school. When Jay starts his first job at the burger joint, Amber becomes his mentor. She's quirky and fun, with just a hint of a dark side; a romance blossoms. Jay's best friend, Cade, sees the red flags. He tries to warn him, but Jay's heart refuses to listen.
Several months into the relationship, Jay and Amber's feelings have escalated—no more waiting. Their precautions fail, and the pregnancy test is positive. Amber tells Jay he has no say in any of her decisions, yet she keeps pulling him back in. He's stuck on an emotional rollercoaster, with Amber at the controls. The one thing he's sure of, he wants this child.
Three lives hang in the balance. Will anyone emerge unscathed?
Jean Baxter lives in northeastern Wisconsin. As a single mom, she white-knuckled it through the adolescent years of her two kids. She found it to be a time fraught with angst and drama. She credits those experiences for her love of writing for that age group. A career as a nurse makes her background ripe with real life scenarios. Along with her obsession for writing, she adores her four grandchildren (more fodder for her stories), gardening, traveling, and wonderful friends. She is a member of Green Bay Area Writer's Guild and Wisconsin Writer's Association.
Jean Baxter has done it again. There is a reason she writes young adult drama - she knows how to do it. I enjoyed this book and her cast of teenagers and young adults. Jamison Warzinski is embroiled in an unfortunate situation which he handles with an admirable maturity. Jean captures the essence of the later teenage years and high school life for her characters. I found myself rooting for Jay and his family. As with her other novels I easily turned the pages in anticipation of how things would play out for this group of young people.
In her trademark well-written and paced style, Jean Baxter delivers in her latest coming of age book. When this 16-year old suddenly became a father he grew up fast. It wasn't easy and full of angst-filled moments, not only for him but for his parents. My favorite moment of the book was when he finally admitted to his best friend that Amber was just like what his best friend had thought all along.
The story of teens, Amber and Jay is a familiar one. They seemingly become enamored with each other. While Jay is a typical teenage boy, confusing sex with love, Amber sees the relationship quite differently. She controls Jay and he can't see it despite the warnings of parents and friends. Jay surprises everyone, including himself as the story unfolds. He and Joey are the lucky recipients of his maturity and love. I read a paperback edition.
From the very beginning the story of Jamison had me hooked. I kept turning pages reading faster to keep up with the twists and turns of his struggles to grow from a teen to a man in a very short time. Jean Baxter has a good understanding of the challenges that Jamison faces in a year that would put anyone, young or old, to the test. An excellent read for YA and adult readers.
