Can he break his curse before time runs out?

Despite being cursed to sleep as a gargoyle for a hundred years, and awake for only twenty-five, Rian O'Reilly is an optimist. He knows he can find a way to break the curse through the tattooed runes he's spent years mastering. No need to wait for this true love crap. But he hasn't found the right combination of magic and his time is almost up. Rian isn't ready to lose everyone and everything. Again.

Professor Logan Davis knows about loss. In the past year, he’s lost his mother, his twin, his werewolf pack, and he’s on the verge of losing his mind. So when he’s invited to Arrington to learn about a legend he’s never heard of, he jumps at the chance for a working vacation. He doesn’t expect to find a handsome gargoyle who needs his help to break a centuries-old curse—and he certainly doesn’t expect his grief to finally overwhelm him.

As Rian comforts Logan, he starts to wonder if there might be something to this true love crap after all. He'd give anything to help this gentle giant of a man, but Logan needs time to heal...and time is the one thing Rian doesn't have.

STONE SKIN is a male/male paranormal romance featuring a magical tattoo artist gargoyle who doesn’t want to go, a werewolf professor who needs time to rediscover himself beneath his grief, and a budding love that might be the answer to everything…if only it has time to bloom.

MM Romance
Gargoyle/Werewolf Slowwwww Burn
Book 2 of 3 (should be read in order)
2.5 Stars ⭐️

I’m so torn on how to rate and review this book. This series is about 3 gargoyle brothers trying to break their curse before they go back to sleep for another 100 years. They break the curse by finding true love but in this one Rian was trying to find a way to end it using magic runes he has tattooed on his body and brings in a legends and myths researcher, Logan, to help him. The idea of this series is really cool but the execution has been quite lacking for me and yet I still want to read book 3. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Book 3 is MMM with an asexual gargoyle, a bear shifter who betrayed his trust and a mountain lion shifter that was just saved from the big bad of these books. These really need to be read in order because while each book features a different brother, there is an ongoing storyline.

My issue with this book is the fact there was more action and everything else OTT happening that it took away from the romantic relationship. Rian and Logan have the slowest of slow burns due to the way this was written and I found it quite boring trying to slog through it. I actually DNF’d it around 23% but I gave it another whirl before returning it and it seemed to pick up only to become completely lackluster again by 50% and I ended up skimming the majority of it. Rian and Logan were so focused on researching how to get rid of the curse that I didn’t see much relationship development. It didn’t help that Logan wasn’t ready for a relationship due to a pretty traumatic past and there wasn’t even a friends with benefits type situation when he’s visiting so there’s just the base storyline, nothing more. This had nothing physical happen between them until the 70% mark except for hand holding and if the story had captivated me I wouldn’t have minded but it didn’t so this just felt like it was never ending. Once these two do fall in love though, breaking the curse through runes is never mentioned again which is ridiculous because there’s still one more brother cursed and the entire book was about breaking the curse and then…nothing.

I can’t believe I’m even considering the 3rd book but the last chapter was from Teague’s POV and it was more interesting than books 1&2 combined so I know I’m going to give in. I am such a masochist. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've given this a B- at AAR, 3.5 stars

Jenn Burke’s Stone Skin is book two in her  Gargoyles of Arrington  series, featuring three brothers who were cursed five hundred years ago, and their search for a way to break the curse once and for all. This is a trilogy with each book featuring a different brother and love interest, but the overarching plot means it’s probably best to read all the books in order; the author does include the backstory here, but I don’t think it really works as a standalone.

In Stone Wings, we met Teague, Drew and Rian, the surviving three O’Reilly brothers who were turned to stone by a witch and cursed to live out their days as gargoyles. Thanks to a counter-curse by their aunt – also a witch – they are able to return to their human forms once every century and live as human for twenty-five years after which they return to their sleep in stone. The only way to break the curse is for them to find true love – which has now happened for two of them; the eldest brother, Finnian, found his love in 1899 and, sadly, lived his life without his brothers at his side – and Drew, who fell in love with their ‘caretaker’ and assistant, Josh in Stone Wings. With less than two years to go before their next ‘sleep’ the chances of Rian and Teague finding love and returning to their human forms is becoming less and less likely.

In the previous book, we learned that Rian has been scouring the internet for information on folklore, myths and curses – basically, anything that might help them find a way to break the curse before he and Teague return to stone once more, which is due to happen in less than two years time. And he suspects that he may not even have all of that time to keep trying; recently, he’s begun sleeping for longer periods than normal, sometimes for days at a time, and is worried this is a warning that his time may be up sooner than anticipated.

Professor of Anthropolgy at the University of Victoria, Dr. Logan Davis is a world-renowned expert on folklore and legend, and has driven to Arrington in order to find out more about the Irish legend brought to the US by the O’Reilly family. He suspects the tale is probably one he’s heard before, but he hasn’t heard this family’s spin on it – and honestly, he just wanted to get away from Victoria and the sad memories that have been dragging at him since the deaths of his mother (from cancer) and younger brother (in a motorcycle accident), both within the last six months. His car breaking down on the outskirts of Arrington – where there’s no phone signal – really shouldn’t have surprised him; his frustration is just one more thing pushing him closer and closer to the edge of falling into all those unwanted emotions he’s been squashing down for so long.

Luckily, he’s not been there long when a tow truck pulls up behind him, and a guy, obviously a mechanic, jumps out and explains that someone had seen the car on the side of the road and called him to come see if he could help. They chat while he checks out the car, and Logan is stunned to discover that he’s one of the O’Reillys he’s come to see, and that the invitation to visit came from his younger brother, Rian. When Drew explains he’s going to have to tow the car to his garage and Logan realises he didn’t think to book somewhere to stay, Drew offers him the use of the guesthouse on the O’Reilly property – as he’s come to see Rian anyway, it’ll make things easier. Logan doesn’t immediately jump on the offer – he doesn’t like being dependent on anyone – but realises he has little alternative and agrees.

Rian has just woken from one of his long, involuntary naps – which lasted for three days, this time – when he discovers that they have a visitor. Eager to meet Logan – because he may be able to offer some new insight or information and not at all because Rian may have spent just a little bit too long mooning over the man’s photograph on the UVic website – Rian makes his way over to meet their guest, and is shocked when Logan can immediately tell that Rian is not human. It doesn’t take Rian long to work out that Logan isn’t exactly human either. He’s a werewolf.

Logan being a shifter means there’s no difficulty in his accepting what Rian tells him about the curse, and the pair immediately get to work, their research about the Fomori, the fae-like creature who killed Rian’s parents and then put the curse on him and his brothers, turning up some information that could prove very useful in their quest to break the curse and their fight against the pride of mountain-lion shifters/biker gang that has been trying to force them to abandon their home.

I really like the premise of this series, but after reading Stone Wings, I adjusted my expectations for the romance, which, in that book, was a bit lacklustre. I can’t say the romance works much better here; Rian and Logan are likeable and it’s clear that they both need someone to care for and have care for them, but they fall in love having known each other for less than a week and I didn’t feel any real chemistry between them. That said, Ms. Burke really knows how to deliver an emotional gut-punch, which she does, expertly, near the end, and she does a good job of describing the brothers’ grief at missing out on Finnian’s life, at losing their youngest brother (whose statue was smashed while they were asleep) and of what it means for them when they awaken each time, knowing their old lives and the people they might have known are long gone.

So, I went into this book primarily for the overarching plotlines about breaking the curse and the conflict with the mountain lion shifters who are in league with the Fomori, and in that respect the story did not disappoint. The author has clearly done her homework on ancient Irish mythology, the revelations about the wolf shifter pack Teague had formed an alliance with were ones I didn’t see coming, and the suspense and action portions of the story are well done. I enjoyed the relationship between the brothers and the beginnings of a found family with the group of younger shifters who come to them for help – and we end with a glimpse of what’s to come in the next book with Teague now the last gargoyle standing. Given the way his story has been set up, his romance with ____ (not saying!) has the potential to be a pretty angsty one, which, if that’s how it turns out, will be right up my alley.

I’m giving Stone Skin a qualified recommendation because I enjoyed the story and liked the characters, even though the romance is a bit insta-love-y. If you read and enjoyed Stone Wings, then you’ll probably have already marked this to read; if you haven’t, the series is worth checking out for the inventiveness of the plot and premise. I plan on picking up book three, Stone Heart: An M/M Paranormal Monster Romance when it’s released later this year.

Just as good as book one!

There was some angst in this but mostly relating to Logan and the losses the poor man had to deal with.

When he arrives in town, having answered Rian's letter asking for his help with the folklore surrounding the brothers' curse, he quickly gets tangled up in what's going on.

He also starts to recover from his trauma of essentially being left a lone wolf following the deaths of his mother and twin brother and that's all down to Rian giving him new purpose.

He's also unknowingly finding himself a new family, a pack, as they gather up more rag-tag rejects and refugees from the mountain lion pride being used by the Fomori.

I'm very much enjoying the meandering way the larger plot is playing out in this series. Each time we get a further glimpse into the creature responsible for the curse and insights into the different ways each brother deals with it.

There's lots going on in this one and obviously the final book is left to oldest brother Teague, who has already got a soul bond with the leader of the cursed bear shifters, complicated much!

I'm dying to find out what cat shifter Frankie's hiding too, and how Christian Holt is going to make amends for his lie.

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

Stone Skin is the second book in this paranormal gay romance series with three cursed gargoyle brothers finding true love. While the first book wasn't my favorite I was still eager to continue the series and read Rian's story. Rian is researching alternate ways to break the curse as he doesn't think he has the time to wait for true love, he's falling in longer slumbers more and more often and is afraid he'll turn to stone earlier this time. After another long sleep hee asks professor Logan to help research.

This was a lovely romance, Logan and Rian were great together and I really liked their romance. I liked how Rian made the time to help Logan and take him out for a fun day instead of focusing on the research as he knew Logan needed a break. Logan just lost his mother and brother and has been pushing his grief away. He is not in a good state when he arrives here to help, but slowly with Rian's help he starts to feel his grief and deal with everything he's been through.

These two were so great to read about. I liked how their romance has a slow burn vibe with them getting to know each other, they are kind to each other and connecting from the first scene together. There is no drama or angst and I loved reading about these two growing closer. It was everything I enjoy in a romance. I also liked Logan was already aware of the supernatural world as he's a wolf shifter himself. I really liked these two together and seeing them grow closer and find their own found family here was awesome.

I thought this book was a strong sequel too with how it delved deeper in the curse and we find out more about why the pride is after them. It liked how it added some depth and logic to why the pride was here and I liked how Logan contributed to figuring things out. It was interesting seeing the pride situation play out and there were some interesting twists. I thought it was interesting to learn more about the Fomori who cursed them and I am eager to see how everything gets resolved in the third and last book. The world came more alive in this book as we learn more about shifters as well with Logan being one and some other details come to light.

To summarize: I really enjoyed this book. Rian and Logan's romance was awesome, it was sweet and had some steam later on as well. It took time to develop and I liked seeing these two getting to know each other. I liked how they liked each other from the start and are there for the other right away. I loved seeing their romance develop and grow into more and was glad to see Logan heal and deal with his grief. This book also does well in deepening the world building, we learn more about the gargoyles, the curse, the pride and why they're after them as well as shifters. This was an awesome second book in this series and I look forward to book 3!

Honestly, this book actually amped my interest to get my hand in the next one (which will be released in July) because I can imagine it being intense with .

As for its own, Rian and Logan's story is pretty sweet. Logan is the one not ready acknowledging his feeling (although his wolf is ready though) to Rian, because he has lost people he loved before. I liked the development with the mountain-cat pride as well. And more information is known about the Formori female that puts the curse on the brothers.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Stone Skin
is the second book in the Gargoyles of Arrington series by Jenn Burke. While you could probably read this as a stand alone, since it focuses on a different couple than the first, the series has a larger arc plot that carries from book one.

"Love doesn't care if you're ready. Life doesn't. Death doesn't."

The O'Reilly brothers were cursed to spend 100 years asleep as stone gargoyles and 25 years awake ,the only way to break the curse is to find your true love. Rian O'Reilly has been looking for alternative ways to break the curse since it seems his deep sleep is arriving earlier than expected. One way is experimenting with the magic runes he tattoos and has contacted a Professor Logan Davis who specializes in folklore and legends. When the Professor shows up to help, he discovers he's a wolf in mourning who could use a friend and comfort. Quickly, Rian becomes attached and knows he's found his love, but Logan's heart is still healing from his grief. Will he realize his love for Rian before time runs out.

I enjoyed this much more than the first book. That may be because I knew what to expect after the first in terms of magic level and "monsterness" of our gargoyles. I loved Rian and Logan together. They have a hurt /comfort dynamic in the beginning. Logan's recent losses broke my heart, and I love the way Rian gave him the touch and comfort his wolf so desperately needed. I enjoyed that Logan was more hesitant to fall in love with Rian and that Rian never put any pressure on him. Their relationship has the decent amount of steam that I thoroughly enjoyed. With our gargoyle Rian being the submissive in the bedroom to Logan's dominant wolf nature. I also have to mention the pansexual rep with Rian and the positive body rep Logan brings with his heavier size that Rian loves every inch of.

Stone Skin had a little bit of everything I enjoy in a paranormal. A romance between a pansexual Gargoyle and a wolf shifter, filled with paranormal danger, action, curses, family, true love, tattoos, steam, wolf cuddles, mating, and a happy ending for Rian and Logan.

P.S. Omg I am so excited for the last book in the series . I have so many hopes and predictions for the final brothers book that I am *crossing my fingers" comes true!!

This is book 2 of The Gargoyles of Arrington series. A series about three brothers who were cursed to sleep as gargoyles for 100 years only to wake up for 25 before going to sleep again. But there's a catch. The curse can be broken if they find requited true love. There's another catch, though; the world isn't aware the paranormal is among them and the brothers can use their magic to appear completely human not for long, and when they don't use the magic they're in their living stone state with some of their gargoyle features, so you see how it may not be the easiest to find someone to date and fall in love with.
These books have a guaranteed HEA, so it's not a spoiler to tell you that in book 1, one of the brothers found love in the guy whose family has cared for the gargoyles for generations.

In book 2, the youngest brother and tattoo artist Rian, has everyone worried; their curse still has 2 years until the two remaining brothers go to sleep for a hundred years but Rian feels the magic changing and finds himself napping for longer than normal, sometimes for days. So he calls folklore expert professor Logan to help him find a way to break the curse without the love loophole. There's no time for love. OR IS THERE?? 😏

Professor Logan is a werewolf, which makes things easier when it comes to explaining to him about the curse and just going around in his living stone state without him being scared. Rian's gargoyle features aren't for the faint of heart. Logan, at first a bit startled, starts developing feelings he wasn't expecting, not when he's had the worst months of his life, is grieving, lost to loss, and in the brink of a breakdown.

The two of them may not be looking for more, but they sure find it.

One of the things I loved is that Logan was big and fat, a soft mountain of a man who looks like he gives the best hugs, and he sure does! Yay for fat rep!

This is the second book in this series about gargoyles, which are cursed.
As Gargoyles are normally not the typical MCs , I really enjoyed the first abs now this second book.

The relationship development is one of the major issues in stories, but here it was really well done.

It made me definitely eager to read the next and I can't wait to read the next one

This book can he read as a standalone but I would not

Oh I liked Rian and Logan. This was sweet and adorable with just enough action to keep things interesting. I enjoyed the fact that Rian had a little crush on the professor before even meeting him. Logan was in so much pain to start off and needed the connection with Rian to truly help him heal. Adding a werewolf into the mix also brought about some really great revelations as well. There's a lot of turmoil going on and the brothers struggle to figure out who to trust.

Enjoying this series a lot. I like the characters and I just feel like I can sink in and be taken away to this world and these characters. Perfect escape book I needed at the moment.

As the second entry to the series, STONE SKIN touched a bit on the background story of the curse without being too repetitive as most of it already been revealed on the first book. However, the trilogy is best to be read in chronological order as one would understand the overall picture better by following the sequence.

The story centered on Rian, the youngest O’Reilly brother, and Logan Davis, a lone werewolf professor he had a crush on. I thought their story was sweet with a dash of melancholic tone if a bit rushed. BUT - since this is a paranormal romance, I made an exception as I usually did. It’s just with them practically closeted together for days 24/7 I’d expect more oomph in their budding romance.

There was also the shared issue of defeating the villain and lifting the curse as major design of the trilogy. This - I felt - went rather slow despite whatever Logan and Rian were supposed to be doing. Given the time limitation the brothers had, there was no sense of urgency in finding answer for the characters. At least this reader didn’t get that feeling off the page. Personally I think this is the least ambitious gang the author had ever written (compared to her other series, like ‘Not Dead Yet’ and ‘Ashes and Dust’).

It’s not a total fail and I’m still curious how the last brother’s story going to go. I just wasn’t fully pleased with how the narration go down. It’s still an entertaining story though.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Stone Skin is the second book in the Gargoyles of Arrington series and is an enjoyable continuation of this trilogy. Burke finds a nice balance between focusing on a new romantic pairing in Rian and Logan, but also building on the series threads that started in the first book. I think you could probably jump in here if you really wanted to, but familiarity with the first book will definitely enhance your enjoyment of this one.

Logan and Rian are such a sweet, appealing pair. Logan is still really dealing with his grief and at times it just overwhelms him. His mother and brother were all the family and pack that he had, and their loss is just crushing. Getting a chance to not only find love with Rian, but also gain a family of sorts with his brothers, Josh, and some other area shifters gives Logan that bond that he has really been missing. The cast grows here in this story and there is a nice sense of family building.

4-⭐

I like these gargoyle boys a lot. The curse is interesting and the story is fast-paced. The romance is a bit too fast-paced but still good. I am engaged but I still feel that these books could be better. Probably wont go into my favourites. But I do want to check out the 3rd book too, so something here works.

I loved the first book in this series and the amazing world that was created. I adored this couple more than the first one. They both just tugged at my heartstrings, especially Logan. He has lost so much, and my heart just broke for him. Rian was really there for him and helped him on his road to recovery.

Rian is really starting to feel the effects of the curse, and I got so worried for him at points! He is trying certain runes to break the curse, but he is having no luck.

I adored them together, and it was so sweet seeing Logan cuddle up with Rian in his wolf form. They have some very hot, sexy time together, and I just couldn't get enough for them.

There were some secrets unvield in this one, and there is still mounting tension with the packs. I just loved how the story is progressing, and I can't wait to see how things get resolved. I just gave to wait patiently for Teague's book. I really hope his true love is the one I'm hoping for!

great characters, my favorites so far

Rating: 4.5 🌈

Its been a year since the first book in The Gargoyles of Arrington series by Jenn Burke so I needed to get reacquainted with the arc storylines and particulars before diving into Stone Skin, the novel that’s centered around brother Rian O'Reilly. He’s one of the three remaining O’Reilly brothers who were cursed with turning into Gargoyles and eventual stone death until a witch aunt altered the curse just enough that finding true love would break it.

There’s just two now with the curse hanging over them. The others have either died or met with their true loves.

I admit I connected with this story more fully than I did with Drew and his human mate/lover from Stone Wings. That book had to set the foundation (a lot of information), and lay out the mysteries of the curse and O’Reilly family. It then had even more important details to be worked into the narrative such as a invasion of mountain lion shifters, then a wolf shifter pack element. All that put the fake boyfriend romance under a smaller spotlight, bookwise.

But from the beginning, I was highly invested in the lives of Professor Logan Davis, a person haunted by loss, and Rian, the tattoo artist brother, who’s determined to find a way out of the curse for himself and his remaining brother before it’s too late. And hoping that the unknown professor of legend and mythology will help him to find a clue in the past to unravel their ancient mystery.

Burke shows us so clearly how Rian is desperate to find the cure. We watch as the effects of the old magic falter and he’s sure he doesn’t have much time left. It’s hits us as hard as it does him and his family.

Then we shift to the Professor and a portrait of grief that’s raw and real.As the Professor isn’t even emotionally or mentally available in this world, traumatized by recent events. The author has made us care for him, for Rian, and now the reader is committed to solving the mystery and to the couple to finding their own happiness.

There’s multiple plots also brought forward from Stone Wings that get futher development. I enjoy a found family trope and this one is coming together beautifully.

While all the side storylines are still continuing, they take a secondary role and leave the relationship between Rian and Logan as the main focus. It works perfectly to let the reader understand the overall arc theme is coming together towards a resolution and yet still gives us enough information about the third brother to make us want to continue following the story into the next book.

The drama isn’t over yet.

I’m eagerly awaiting Stone Heart , the last in this series. Love a paranormal hurt/comfort love story? Then I’m recommending Stone Skin and the beginning novel, Stone Wings. Read them in order before the final book in the trilogy comes out.

This is the second in the Gargoyles of Arrington series, and really needs to be read in sequence with the first book, as it continues the ongoing thread of the story of the curse and the family's attempts to break it.

I really enjoyed the first book and was so looking forward to this, and it didn't disappoint. I think I might have enjoyed this more than the first book, now the world and characters have been set up. This is the second brother, Rian, and Logan's story. We met Rian in the first book, and were briefly introduced to Logan too. I loved Logan. I can't even begin to fathom what he's been through and how difficult it must have been for him on his own trying to deal. The poor man just needs support and I'm glad he found his 'found family' to help him. I also love that although he's a werewolf, he's not your typical 'alpha macho' wolf. Yes he's big but he's cuddly, and soft yet with that inner core of steel that you wouldn't mess with. He's clearly protective of the brothers and I loved that.

Rian too, I really liked. He's got the worst of the curse for some reason, and he and Logan together are just perfect. They each really need something the other brings and together they just work. The continuation of the curse storyline was really good too, I'm happy to see the back of the mountain lions and love the new additions to the family living in the house and can't wait to see them again in the next book.

There is everything in this book, action, drama, magic, romance, and conflict and I really enjoyed it. I am practically salivating to get Teague's story because I feel it's going to be the best of the lot.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

The second book in a trilogy can be hit or miss. Sometimes the story is so concentrated on being the 'bridging' book that the story comes in second.

I'm very happy to report that this is NOT the case here!

Jenn Burke has masterfully conquered the sequel dangers and given us a full bodied story that has all the elements you have recognise from the first book. This series is very much about family, born and found, and that continues to be a strong theme through the book.

I don't want to give too much away, but suffice to say if you enjoyed book 1 - Stone Wings, you'll enjoy this one too. Josh and Drew feature heavily in the story, along with the other brother Teague, and a new host of characters who will play a large part in book three.

As you would expect, there are twists and turns aplenty, and book 3 is set up nicely to continue the adventure. Book 2 is just as romantic as book 1, but I think it is more intense emotionally. Rian's more tenuous grasp on his ability to stay awake plays an important role and increases the tension quite a bit. But be assured, it has a beautiful ending.

I would not recommend reading Stone Skin as a standalone. You really need the background to the characters and their stories in Stone Wings to enjoy this one. I think without this background you would be terribly lost and it may put you off the series - and that would be a huge shame.

I loved every moment of Stone Skin, I can't wait for what is sure to be a gripping finale!

Oh my goodness...

Yall, this book was so good that I didn't want it to end. I wanted Teague's story immediately, that snippet at the end was so....uhgg.

Slight spoilers

Anyways, in here we have Rian, one of the cursed gargoyle brothers. In the last book he had found a professor that could maybe come and help work on the curse and Logan, a wolf shifter who lost everything and was barely functioning. They had an instant connection but Logan was scared to actually admit feeling anything. You could actually see them falling for each other and it was wonderful.

After gaining some new members to their pack/family, finding out about what really was going on with the wolf pack from book one, and another attack from the evil witch, Rian was put back under the curse and I'm not gone a lie, I was crying real tears. From the moment Logan realized what happen until what happened, happened.

I cannot wait until the next book though I hope the series continues with the new people.

Rian and Logan were super sweet. Rian was the youngest of the brothers, but the one who shines the brightest. I loved him.

Logan was in a dark place when he first meets Rian, but Rians light works its magic before long. I enjoyed seeing him come out of his loneliness and start to heal as part of the Gargoyle family.

Some surprising revelations and definite forward momentum on the overarching plot occurs. A few new faces are introduced and Teague's mate is also all but explicitly confirmed as well. Since he's the one who woke up 2 years early and has yet to find his mate that man is running out of time. Or has he already found him?

This is book 2 in the series and features Rian. Rian has been trying to figure out a way to break the curse without falling in love. He contacts Logan, who is a professor to get his take on this folklore. As time goes on, they start to get closer. Great action in taking down the lion pride and having more information on the Fomori that cursed them. Cannot wait to see what happens with Teague’s book.

I loved how different this series was from the start and I’m so happy Stone Skin was just as good as the first book in The Gargoyles of Arrington series, perhaps even better. While I enjoy standalones within or outside of a series, there’s something noteworthy about a series that builds on each book as this one does. I really enjoy watching the story surrounding the curse of the Arrington gargoyles unfurl bit by bit and like seeing these brothers work to find their chance at breaking it and finding love.

Logan was a fantastic addition to the cast of characters at the Arrington house. His background and interests added so much depth to Stone Skin and made him a wonderful partner for Rian. I enjoyed watching these two develop their connection and turn to each other despite their fears and pasts.

I also really enjoyed how the plot surrounding the shifter packs in the area developed in the second book. There were some great twists in Stone Skin, and those plus the good action scenes, wonderful characters, and an interesting, original plot make this a fantastic read I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Logan made me very happy. He's such a sweetheart. And Rian? Sheesh. So sweet and understanding--he's clearly too good for this world. I'm pleased with how the background plot is progressing and am anxious to see what happens in the next book.

Book 2 in the cursed gargoyle brother series.
Logan was a dear, heartbreaking (to me) and heartbroken. I adored him.
At first the story focused on Rian and Logan's developing friendship and feelings. I began to wonder if the Mountain lion pack would make a move. They did but not 'til the last 25% of the book. And bam, the action. Comes hard and fast at that point.

Roll on book 3

Stone Skin is the second book in the trilogy featuring three bothers; it can technically be read as a standalone, but I think it's better to have read the first book as the problem with the mountain lion shifter pack and the O'Reilly brothers' entanglement with another shifter pack are established and explained fully there.

The story follows tattoo artist Rian and wolf shifter Logan, the mythology and folklore professor Rian contacted at the end of the last book in the hope that he could help them find a way to break the curse without finding their true love. For some reason, Rian is falling into sleeps that can last for days and everyone is worried he may fall asleep early, especially since Teague the eldest brother woke up 2 years early this time. The hope is that Logan has some knowledge they don't or can help point them in the right direction.

Unbeknownst to Rian, Logan has recently lost his mother and twin brother, and as they were his only pack members, he is lost in a sea of dissociative grief. When he shows up to answer Rian's invitation unexpectedly, he is noticeably adrift and in need of care. As Rian had formed a bit of a crush on the man from reading his research, he's quick to reach out and offer comfort and a helping hand.

Rian and Logan have an instant chemistry, and Logan's wolf feels comfortable and content around Rian in a way he hasn't experienced since his pack died. Within days, the two have bonded but Logan is determined to keep some emotional distance bc he is in no place to love and suffer loss again. However, as he spends time with the O'Reillys he becomes invested in their family and a part of their continued battle with the mountain shifters.

Once again, the pacing of the story is pretty quick, and happens over the span of a couple weeks. The relationship is more insta-love as Rian and Logan don't have the years of history and friendship as a foundation that Drew and Josh had, but it works for the characters, especially as Rian already felt a connection to Logan before they met and is a very caring and big-hearted person, while Logan's wolf shifter instincts push him towards deep connection faster than his mind would like. There's an expansion of the group/new found family incorporated that strikes a chord with me as found family tends to but is a bit fast and almost forced feeling. The continued story with the Fomori made some progress, but she is still a major threat; and there was a definitely interesting and unexpected twist that is as intriguing as it is infuriating.

Overall, it's an entertaining, sweet read.

4.5/5 ⭐

Stone Skin is the second book in Jenn Burke's The Gargoyles of Arrington series. You'll want to read this series in order due to world-building and overarching plot elements. Here's what you can expect from Rian and Logan:

🩶 MM paranormal romance
🩶 First person dual point of view
🩶 Happily ever after for the couple, overarching plot points to be resolved
🩶 Open door spice
🩶 Finding love after loss, grief
🩶 Gargoyle/werewolf shifter
🩶 Canadian setting

I'm so glad I found this series because I really enjoyed it! Although these are paranormal romances with overarching suspense elements, I found them quite cozy. I think that can be attributed to the small town setting and the bond between the three brothers, as well as this amazing little found family they're building. The focus for Stone Skin was the relationship between gargoyle tattoo artist Rian and werewolf shifter professor Logan. This book picks up right after the events of Stone Wings and Rian is doing everything in his power to break the remaining brothers' curse. When he reaches out to Logan, he doesn't realize he's a werewolf shifter or that the man is struggling to keep his head above water after the loss of two important family members.

As I said before, this book was just so healing and cozy. I loved watching Logan open up to Rian, and the two create the most beautiful bond. Although they spent a lot of time working together and researching, they went on some dates around Arrington and Rian giving Logan an incredible tattoo. I really liked how the overarching plot of the brothers trying to break the curse, align with a wolf pack, and create their own "pack" plays out. There was actually a bit of a twist in this book, which I really liked! Jenn does a great job at world-building during this series in a way that makes sense to the reader with so many magical elements at play.

This series would also be a great way to dip your toe into paranormal romance, and gargoyles are a species I don't read a ton about. I enjoy how she represents them here. These books are cozy, sweet, and have just the right hint of spice. I can't wait to check out more of her work!

Taking longer and longer naps, Rian knew time was running out for him. In two years, probably less, he’ll turn to stone again. He’d tried magically infused tattoos, but he’d not found a cure. There must be another way to combat the curse other than true love. He seeks the help of Logan, an expert in legends. Yet the man is on the verge of a breakdown. Despite the attraction, there can’t be enough time to heal and realize love – can there?
Oh damn! I love these books. Each one is an assault on the emotions and a fabulous read. Stone Skin is the second of The Gargoyles of Arrington series. Book one opened a new world to me, and Stone Skin solidified it. So far, each book can be read independently, but reading the series gives one a more in-depth experience.
The tale is told in the first person, present tense, from the viewpoints of Rian and Logan. Worldbuilding is taken down to the color of jumpers, which I didn’t mind as it gave me a sense of the person’s personality. While there is the odd technical blip - I didn’t care because I was so engrossed in the story.
Rian had never experienced love, so he wasn’t sure he’d recognize it over the need to help Logan. With tragedy in his past, Logan had shut his emotions off, and when they surfaced, he didn’t trust them. Love couldn’t be rushed, yet time was a precarious thing. Especially since a witch and a mountain lion pride were out to kill Rian and his brothers.
Oh my. The extended cast was as varied in their intentions as their capabilities and loyalty. Nevertheless, the character list was small enough not to be overwhelmed - perfect.
I thought about giving this 4.5 or 4.75 heart, but nope, it had to be a 5. And why? Because it was thought-provoking, mushy in places, sexy as hell, full of testosterone and brotherly love. Next to allies, there’s betrayal and help where they least expect it. By the end, I was a blubbering mess for all of the above.
