If you know Rebel Girls, you know you are in for a treat of information and inspiration with this book.
The latest offering from Rebel Girls, this ‘handbook’ is unlike any of their previous books in its format. The collection first begins with a continent-wise glimpse of women achievers, with a few token women from some countries on each continent. This ensures a fair representation from across the world rather than having a US or Euro-centric focus. Next comes a timeline of woman achievers across the ages. Finally, there are mini bios of more than 300 women achievers from various countries, big and small. The list includes women of diverse racial and cultural heritage and even includes trans women and disabled women.
Unlike the usual format where the bios are written in a story-like format, the info is presented in a bulleted list this time, making it easier to assimilate and quicker to read. I found this format refreshing. I also enjoyed the ‘Your Turn’ segment that appears on a few pages, where it uses the achiever’s information and turns it into an interactive experience for the little reader, whether through an activity or a question or a fun assignment. The handbook also includes QR codes that can be unlocked through the Rebel Girls App for podcasts related to that woman achiever.
This book would easily be a five-star read to those who pick this up without knowing the rest of the books. However, as an avid reader of every offering from Rebel Girls, most of the content left me with a feeling of déjà vu. Almost all of the bios are taken from the earlier books in the series. So it was just old wine in a new bottle. While it was still fun to read, I couldn’t enjoy it as much as I would have had the info been new to me.
I still recommend the book with all my heart, but I do feel it will work better with new entrants to the Rebel family.
4.25 stars.
My thanks to Rebel Girls and NetGalley for the DRC of “The Rebel Girls Handbook”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
Another installment in the amazing series is the Rebel Girls, this is the series that I wish had been around when I was a child. I would have had stronger role models and ended up on a different path in life had it been for books like this. Instead, when I was younger it wasn't a thing and I was the type of girl who ended up with a bedroom wall covered in posters of musicians and celebrities. It's only now in my thirties that I look back and imagine how my life could have been different if I had role models that were inspirational females. We always heard that females could do anything, but it wasn't pushed or shown as much as it is these days with #bossbabes and #girlbosses and Rebel Girls. The Rebel Girls Handbook Features Rebel Girls from all over the world from every country imaginable in New Zealand we have Nancy Wake and Helen Clark and Dr. Siouxsie Wiles. The book includes over 300+ profiles of famous females from every generation and all walks of life/careers that have been spotlighted at one point of time in their book series. Each person comes with some fun facts like Florence Nightingale having a pet owl or the weightlifter Athena Urrutia was the inspiration behind the Encanto star Luisa. Also included are activities like how to make Invisible Ink or how to decode your codes just like Nancy Wake did in WW2 which earned her the nickname The White Mouse. The Rebel Girls Handbook also includes QR codes that unlock the Rebel Girls App and hosts audiobooks and podcasts relating to the Rebel Girl profiled. The series is perfect for girls aged 10-15 years old.
Easily readable book with some basic facts on a wide variety of rebel girls from the past through the present. Each figure included where she was from, birthdate, death date (if applicable), countries she lived in, and 4-6 facts about her life and work. I loved that there was a lot of diversity with what the girls were known for and where they were from. While I recognized some of the figures, there were a lot that I didn't know. I think every girl will find someone in here that she can relate to.
Some pages are difficult to read due to font and background color combinations. This may be improved in the print version vs ebook. I would have loved to have a pronunciation guide for some of the names. Loved the inclusion of activities with some of the girls and that the activities were accessible for many different ages, abilities, and socioeconomic levels.
Thanks to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Simply fantastic! Everytime, Rebel Girls releases a book, I think that there is no way that it could possibly beat the last! Another smash hit read is about to land on the shelves! This one is absolutely jam-packed with amazing women and stunning illustrations. It is a an absolute feast for the eyes and teaming with information to ignite the mind of our mini rebels. Once again QR codes are used to bring even more amazing facts via audio links. Superb! The Rebel Girls Handbook is absolutely inclusive bringing us across the world's continents, country to country with fantastic women representing each place, then comprising a complete A-Z of the most extraordinary women, with all their accomplishments and might! It is A-MAZ-ING! Immediately pre-ordered a hard copy. My mini rebels NEED this to pour over again and again! Thanks to Net Gallery for this Amazing Book!
This is another book of the amazing Rebel Girls series. Apart from having great visuals this book has the stories of various amazing women from around the world. Each figure included where she was from, birthdate, death date (if applicable), countries she lived in, and 4-6 facts about her life and work. I loved the ‘your turn’ part of the book where you get the chance to to join the fun in being a Rebel Girl like what to you find most important? Maybe invent a new technology? Or find a hidden talent? or do a secret science experiment.
This book has entries for a lot of women from cleopatra to women and girls from todays time. I liked reading through and learning about these women that have made impacts. The format was basically their name, what they’re known for or do, and facts about them. Some are silly facts like one that I notice is Olga Korbut: the gymnast got so many letters from fans that her hometown had to hire a postal worker just for her! Definitely informative. It’s all in alphabetical order by first name.
“All Rebel, all the time. The Rebel Girls Handbook is the ultimate ticket to trivia, activities, and more about 300+ extraordinary women featured across the bestselling Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series.“
While I love Rebel Girls, this hit me more like a flashback-clip show of your favourite sitcom.
Even though most of this book is more-or-less a regurgitation of the others in the series, it’s set up a bit different.
The Girls Around the World section groups women by geographic location. While the Girls Throughout History, places women on a timeline. The Meet the Rebels section is all your favourite girls from the past, in bullet form.
The downside is that you’ve seen most of it before, and I really miss the story format.
The upside is there are over 300 profiles in this book, in comparison to the 100 in most of the others.
In this handbook from Rebel Girls, we get everything from a timeline, to chapters with individual girl who each has changed the world in their own way, and you as a reader also gets a ‘your turn’ where you get the chance to to join the fun in being a Rebel Girl; what to you find most important? Maybe invent a new technology? Or find a hidden talent?
These books are always inspirational to read and this one was also one of them! I always look forward to reading about girls who in their own have changed or is an inspiration for so many other girls around the world.
My favorite in this book was the timeline; I love a timeline and it was great to see the women and girls who have been a great influence and continue to be an influence at this point in time.
I can’t wait to read more from Rebel Girls and get more inspired.
Haven't read a Rebel Girls book I didn't admire and learn from! The Rebel Girls books are a great encouragement for the girls who will grow to be the movers, shakers, and fixers of the world they will inherit. There are women well known to all, or to today's mothers, or today's girls, or simply good examples from prior and current centuries and countries all around the world. This excellent book is designed to make all think outside the box and act in belief in their opportunity to enact change. The illustrations continue to be delightful, imaginative, and colorful. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library! I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Rebel Girls via NetGalley. Thank you!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book.
From the onset, this book looks to be for a younger audience than the original Good Night Stories (GNS) books. I figured this out since the biography entries are written in bullet points as opposed to the multiple paragraphs in the GNS books. Also, there is a handy How to Read This Book at the beginning before the real content starts.
Since this is for a younger audience, I think caretakers (parents, teachers, etc.) may want to do more background research on a woman if their child is more interested in them. For example, Artemisia Gentileschi was raped by her tutor and this ISN’T mentioned in this book (rightfully so), but maybe a topic of conversation if your child looks her up on Wikipedia. Another example is Malala Yousafzai who survived an assassination attempt that’s also NOT mentioned in this book but would definitely be mentioned everywhere your child may look up. It’s more of a precaution than a warning.
I loved that the girls and women mentioned were more diverse than I’ve read in any other books. There are gay and trans women mentioned as well as Romani (I counted one but that’s an improvement over none), several Indigenous women, and a few disabled women. I loved seeing this since I haven’t really seen a large scope of participants before.
There are some repeat entries from the GNS books, but there are a lot more women I didn’t know at all. Even then, there were some women I knew but hadn’t seen in previous books like this, such as Octavia Butler.
The format of the entries are 1 page for a majority of the entries and a few had a two-page format in which an activity was mentioned to make the book more interactive.
Like the other Rebel Girls books, I really enjoyed this one and I think it’s a great starting point for the book series.
accomplished. I’d suggest gifting this book to a young girl along with a packet of Post-It page markers. Encourage the girl to enjoy the book, and to place a page marker next to the women she’d really like to learn more about.
The strength of The Rebel Girls Handbook is how it tackles “you can’t know what you don’t know” syndrome. Most young girls are aware of the poet Amanda Gorman, as she’s young and contemporary, but have they learned about Bessie Coleman, the first African American and Native American woman to get a pilot’s license, back in 1921? Do they know that Joan Jett, rock icon of the 80s, was turned away 23 times by record companies before deciding to start her own indie label?
Armed with a Post-It marked copy of the Handbook, a young rebel reader can scour the library and the internet to learn more about these women – or engage in meaningful conversations about them with older friends and family. This is why I call books of this type “jumping off” books. They provide the introduction – you take what interests you and run with it.
Three stars for content plus two stars for providing helpful inspiration equals five stars!
My thanks to Rebel Girls and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital advance review copy of this book. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Thank you to Rebel Girls for the invitation to read and review an e-ARC of this title on NetGalley. This is a whopper of a handbook and I really wanted to take the time to linger over it and enjoy the details of each page. This is the first I've seen of a "handbook" style from Rebel Girls, and I really like the format. I think middle-grade readers would love making this book their own, by doodling in the pages, writing in more factoids about the featured rebels as they learn them, tabbing up their pages with post-its or other notes. The page design really invites this, but I think I also wish the pages themselves explicitly invited this in. I think the QR codes scattered about sort of does this in a tech way, but I also love the tactile possibilities here, especially since it's designed to look like a diary or scrapbook with lots of photos and notepapers taped in. I would say that I love the global nature of the stories featured, and the diversity of the rebels presented - I just didn't think it quite 100% worked in the portion where they are attributed to specific countries and continents because I think it got a bit complicated. But if you're reading this review, definitely check this one out and let the readers in your life make this a jumping-off point for future learning!
These books are so incredibly special. Every time I see a new one, I instantly request it to read and review.
The Rebel Girls series is full of books that highlight extraordinary women and girls. I love how in the latest book, it includes so many inspirational people. The Rebel Girls Handbook does a fantastic job with including women of many backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and cultures. Too often in books like this, the women featured are often straight, white, and able bodied. But Rebel Girls highlights women that are left out in these other books. This is SO important for young readers. Now they have the ability to see themselves within these pages.
This book and other Rebel Girls titles are must haves for young girls. If I had a daughter, I would have every single book in the series.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a free digital copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
A book for older girls. Lots of pages about the size of a novel. Design and layout similar to other Rebel Girls Books with bright colours. More sentencing in a non standard layout with lots of pictures. The first section of the book focusses on where the rebel girls come from, Some pages show entire continents whilst others focusses on specific regions and countries. Then there is a timeline of how great women have been throughout history and how they made history. Each rebel has a page focused on them with their name at the top, what the they're really good at and the country they are from or the country where they undertake what they do best. The book features over three hundred women and girls. There are QR codes on some pages and activity ideas, This is a true celebration of how great women are and always have been.
Thanks to #NetGalley for this preview of #RebelGirlsHandbook in exchange for a honest review.
If you're familiar with any of the previous Rebel Girls books, you'll have an idea what to expect here. Rather than a few paragraphs for each character, though, it's been cut down to three-four bullet points, and this lets it fit a lot more women into the book.
Although it advertises activities, there are very few in evidence here. I did see QR codes but as I was reading on my tablet, I couldn't check them out - my reader couldn't distingish it on the screen. I look forward to trying a couple when the book is published.
This is a great entry to the series as the simpler format will be helpful for younger readers, and it will lead to people looking up more information on the featured ladies. Fantastic.
This book is truly unique and special! It actually might be my personal favorite out of all the Rebel Girls books I have seen so far. I loved, loved, loved the part where there are countries and tiny snippets of information about various women from that region and what makes them special and unique. Women of various backgrounds, with various achievements, of various ages. Wow. This definitely also is the most fun read for kids, as there are no long paragraphs, there are fun illustrations (and lots of those!), and each bit is written in an easy-to-read and easy-to-comprehend manner. There are short bullet points along with facts (and many of them work as great conversation starters later!).
As always the Rebel Girls Handbook is a wealth of great tidbits about iconic women throughout history. From Hatshepsut to Issa Rae to Kamala Harris, there is a wealth of fun facts about a bunch of amazing women who have changed history and women who are making history now. This book also has QR codes embedded on some of the pages, so you can look up additional information. My copy was digital, so the QR codes were no use in my copy, but they seem like they would be fun in a hard copy. I know these books are really targeted to children and youth readers, but I always learn something new. Thank you to Netgalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.
The cover notes that this title is packed with facts and activities about 300 plus extraordinary women. The sections inside include an introduction, how to use this book, rebel girls around the world and throughout history, followed by meet the rebels. As is generally true of the titles in the series, this book is a terrific and inspiring resource. There are even q codes to link with additional materials.
This book has bright and snappy illustrations and short sections to read that are full of information. Go in any order-geography, history or the alphabet. There is so much inspiration here.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for this title. All opinions are my own.
Thanks to Net Galley for the e-ARC! I actually liked this one enough I even preordered a copy to be able to read in person and have it on my shelf. I enjoyed that there was a wide range of women with different occupations and abilities to show that you can do anything you put your mind and heart to. One figure that I feel should have been included in the book was Selena Gomez because not only is she a celebrity she owns a makeup company and she is a mental health advocate. My most extensive critique is the quality of some of the images of the women. Some images were caricature outlines of the figure, whereas others were super detailed portraits. I think there needs to be a better balance in the quality and presentation of the images.
Thank you very much NetGalley and Rebel Girls for a copy of The Handbook in exchange on my honest opinion.
It's not a secret that I love Rebel Girls, what they do, the amount of people the give visibility to, the women they enhance, the care they take, their illustrations... This Handbook wasn't an exception.
I loved this book from the beginning. I liked the first few pages more focused in the different continents. We found some of the most amazing women in Europe, Asia, Africa...
And then we had the pleasure to see plenty more great women in the rest of the book.
I recognized most of them but I also found many more new ones and that's what I love the most about Rebel Girls!
I received an electronic ARC from Rebel Girls through NetGalley. The latest in this empowering series. Readers travel around the world to meet women who have soared, overcome and conquered their own fears to shine in their fields. I particularly like the superpower terms shared for each woman in the Meet the Rebels portion. The authors also offer readers a chance to create their own plans/art/program to take steps toward their own goals. The information provided on each woman serves as a springboard to learn more.
I literally love the Rebel Girls. They are an amazing and inspiring feminism brand that includes everyone of all in the world. This handbook is pretty cool, if I'm being honest. It has inspiring people from well, all over the world. Just a few of my favorites are:
- Ladi Kwali - Brigid Kosgei - Gloria Steinem
Not only that, it provides young girls with a timeline of powerful women throughout the years, and further on includes information with more inspiring women.
Really love this brand, perfect introduction for young girls, especially those who need inspiration.
Started to read the Rebel Girls books with my sister. This is the second in the series we have read and to be honest I am not a fan of history books but I have enjoyed reading about a wide range of female idols such such as Beatrix Potter and Bindi Irwin. I am surprised about how much I have learnt from reading this book and both my sister and I enjoyed the extra little bits of information found when you scan the QR code as well as having a go at the little activities on a selection of pages. We both agreed to give the book 5 stars and look forward to read more books in the series

This is another great installment in the Rebel Girls series, with an added section exploring the globe and listing several "rebel girls" from each continent, and a timeline of civilization and their place in it. Then there are short descriptions of ladies of many different backgrounds and accomplishments, alongside bright and colorful illustrations. I love this series, and think it should be given to all young girls.
The Rebel Girls Handbook by Rebel Girls. Malala Yousafzai fights for girls' education around the world. . . and there's an asteroid named after her. Florence Nightingale was a nurse who saved lives during the Crimean War. . . and she had a pet owl named Athena. María Isabel Urrutia is a Colombian weightlifter. . . and the inspiration for a character in the film Encanto. I absolutely love this series. 5*.
The Rebel Girls Handbook is a great book and a beautiful resource for all children and young adults (and rebel girls alike). It has a diverse group of rebel girls highlighted and gives a timeline of their lives from birth to death. This book allows the reader to interact more.with this book than with others in the past and for that and the timeline I love it more than past formats.
This book was another great Rebel Girls installment. What I liked most about this book was the variety of women and girls from a variety of time periods and backgrounds. There was great information on each page and the book overall is very engaging and palatable.
Thank you Netgalley and Rebel Girls for the digital advanced readers copy.
Fascinating compendium of rebel girls and women from across the globe! I loved that it included females from different time periods including young activists working to change the world today!
The information was presented in bite-sized pages. Each includes a vibrant illustration accompanying a set of bullet points with highlights from the subjects’ lives.
