Caspian Ivanov and I come from the same dark world. One where the Bratva and the secret society reign. And, he’s the son of their ruthless leader. “I’ll destroy you.” That’s the last thing he said to me. It was on the night of the Reaping. Hard to believe we were ever best friends. His vengeance is, however, the price I pay for keeping a secret I shouldn’t have kept. A secret that ripped our families apart. It made us forbidden to each other. That’s when he became the viperous devil. Breathtakingly beautiful but with a cold black heart. Like any snake, he wanted to poison me. When our paths collide at Raventhorn University, I stay away from him. What I don’t expect is to become his obsession. Or to be forced to become his wife. Except, we might not get to say I do. Because someone wants me dead. Cruel Lies is the first part of the Cruel Secrets Duet and is NOT standalone. It is a dark mafia/ secret society college bully romance filled with mystery, suspense, and plenty of sizzling hot steamy scenes. Please be warned this book is DARK. It contains dubious and other triggering situations that some readers might find offensive or be sensitive to. Please don't read if any of that bothers you. The Cruel Secrets Duet is set in the Raventhorn world.
Style: Dark Romance (College/Mafia) Story: 4/5 Enjoyment: 5/5 Dark Level: 2/5 Sexual Level: GOOD Triggers: Yes Violence: Yes Male: Sexy Series: Book 1 Pages: loc. Audio: N/A Kindle Unlimited: Yes
STORY: WHAT I LIKED: I was so stimulated by this story. Was it anything different from what I’ve read, no, but the way the author delivered the story to me kept me so invested. I love the way the story was done in the beginning. I honestly felt if it did not start the way it did, I may have felt differently. The first 24% of the story, it was all about that build up for me and the way the author constructed the story. it was so inviting. The author started at ages 12 and 13 and build from there. Did Caspian and Willow have much scenes together during this phase of the book, no, but I got stalking, mafia/secret society and a lot of death and drama. This set the tone for the present when they are 19 and 18 years old. Throughout the first 24%, the metamorphosis of Caspian got those juices flowing, granted, he is still very young but it was telling. The remaining book has its mystery and I got sucked into the plot.
Caspian had a dominance about him that is sexy. It doesn’t seem like he is 19. With his whole bravado, he gave me older at times like 23 or 25. Willow gave me innocence. Those two traits from both gave me a bit of excitement as the story progresses.
WHAT WAS SO SO: I don’t have any major issues. I really found myself enjoying the plot and storyline.
SEXUAL CHEMISTRY I love the build up between Caspian and Willow. Caspian’s stalking/jealousy and sexual attraction added to the appeal. Their first sexual encounter was a, what are you doing in my bedroom moment. I enjoyed their sex scenes. Apart of that enjoyment stems from the attraction exuding from both characters that added to the excitement. Although it was good, some of their sexual encounters were not detailed as much (this is me being greedy and wanting more). If it was, it would probably be a longer book. Ow sexual encounter in beginning with Caspian and Willow was a virgin.
SECONDARY CHARACTERS: So many characters added to the appeal of the story. I really like Thorne, Caspian’s cousin. Lucian and Eilish, Willow’s best friends, love them. There were more characters but don’t want to say to much.
OVERALL: Was I entertained? Yes. Did I like the story? Yes. Would I read the other books in the series? Yes.
TRIGGERS: A lot of death and violence(nothing graphic). I am happy to report in book 1, no sexual assaults.
****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.
New adult/college, enemies to lovers, and mafia- all from the always super sexy storytelling of Faith Summers? Sounds delicious! And it is. Cruel Lies marries all I love about elite/secret society college tropes and that of the mafia- it’s dangerous, intriguing, and super sexy. A great start to this entrancing duet.
Cruel Lies gives us the friends to lovers, passion filled romance between Caspian Ivanov and Willow Raventhorn, both mafia elite and heirs to their families legacies. At a young age, Willow’s entire family was murdered. And a burdensome secret Willow revealed tore her apart from her once friend and first true love Caspian. Willows’ world spirals, and she finds herself desperate for others to believe her truth. After years of heartache, she finds herself at the bougie Reenthrone University - the playground for the criminal elite and members of the secret society called the Knights. A world that also thrusts her back into the orbit of Caspian. These friends to enemies to lovers have a volatile and complicated chemistry- and Caspian is thirsty to prey on his once best friend. Only his father forbids him from interacting with her- a move that only deepens his thirst for her. And soon the turbulent tension forces them to confront their troubled history and the secrets that have long been buried. The more they lean into each other, the more dangerous it becomes- and not just for their hearts.
These two characters are captivating, though it took me a minute to get into this story given what felt like a long exposition into their world and past. But once we really get into exploring their present, I quite enjoyed watching them confront their conflicting feelings and contrasting past and present with one another. Willow inspires a lot of empathy as a heroine given her long and isolating struggles and how trapped she’s become in her own reality. I liked watching her start to refind herself, even at the initial cruelty of her once love. And Caspian is every bit the mafia antihero with a smidge of heart to him- and their forbidden, angst-filled, and raw romance is super steam, but we can always expect the most delicious steam from Faith Summers.
Be prepared for a salacious cliffhanger that will have you hungry for answers - this college-mafia romance is deliciously dark and enticing, seductively sexy, and page turningly suspenseful - looking forward to the conclusion!
Friends - enemies - lovers trope. A little dark with mysteries about siblings' deaths. Triggers with self harm, mental illness, and sexual assault. The fact that the H, Caspian said he hated the h, Willow but when they met again he was quite attached to her. Not particularly cruel towards the h tho.. unlike some books that I've trad before where the hero being unnecessarily super psychotic towards the heroine. This one is easier for me to swallow and enjoy. Off to the next book!

Plot Summary : Caspian and Willow have always been together. That is until an accident and a secret tore them apart. Caspian knows he can't trust the one girl who meant more than anything to him and Willow had no idea that the secret she kept would blow out things like this. Now all they have is this distance between them. That is until they are both forced to go to the same school. Caspian has his chance to take revenge from the one girl who started the apiral that destroyed everything and there is no way he is going to let her go unscathed.
Overall Opinion : I am just addicted to this author's books. I don't know what it is about her but yeah, I am always tempted to never miss a book by her.
I am sort of grateful that this one was not a mafia arranged marriage romance as those getting a lot repetitive 🤣 This one had younger characters but the steam was as amazing as always! The one thing I love about her books is the suspense. A few of her plot twists are very obvious but there is always that one twist you won't see coming. It's the way she designs it and I love that. The same was with this book. That ending left me in tears and I want the next book now!! These cliffhangers are brutal man!
Definitely recommending this one to all the dark romance loving people out there!
Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Trope: friends to enemies to lovers Angst: 😱😱😱😱 Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Triggers: none
Cruel Lies is the first book in the Cruel Secrets duet by Faith Summers. It ends on a cliffhanger and cannot be read alone. It is written in first person from dual perspective.
Cruel Lies is fantastic tale of love, betrayal and revenge. It did take me a little bit to get into the story, but eventually I got all in with Willow and Caspian and now I can't wait to read what happens to them. Best friends in childhood, enemies born from deception, and lovers because they never truly got over each other ❤. The chemistry between the two of them is definitely hot. The story has tons of action and twists and turns and will have you hooked to the end!
The basic story is an incredibly good one. There’s just a lot of little things surrounding that great story that pushes the realm of realism and believability. For instance, when Willow’s sister dies, all evidence points to murder but suddenly EVERYONE turns on Willow and puts her into a mental institution because they say she’s making it all up. That just makes no sense! Even her friends and family suddenly refuse to believe her against all logic? One or two of small things like this I would overlook but they happen often enough that it interrupts the story and lessen’s my enjoyment of it. Still, I am curious enough about what happens in the main plot that I may finish with the next book.
*I do appreciate that the author warned us this has a cliffhanger ending and must be read as a duo. I also appreciate her being honest about the subject matter.*
Wow this was completely unexpected! First, I’ve never read anything by Faith Summers. Second, this is different than other angsty books I’ve read. The beginning is all about the relationship between kid Caspian and kid Willow. How they grew up together. Their families were tight. Until they find out that Caspian’s mother and Willow’s dad were having an affair and Willow’s mom along side the two others were found dead in a family cabin area. The two families became instant enemies because of the affair and that Willow knew about the affair and didn’t tell her best friend. I really can’t go into detail about what happens next because it’s the bulk of the story. What I can tell you is that there are twists and turns everywhere. You’ll find the Bratva power, the Knights rituals, death, love, deceit, hatred and many more wicked emotions and situations. I read this book so fast and well I forgot it was a duet so I was surprised that it ends on a huge cliffhanger. I need that next book! I freaking need ti know what happens next!! Well done Ms Summers!
Holy sh*t, I love this book. Cruel Lies is everything I wanted in a mafia/secret society book. I have to say it may take Faith/Khardine a little while to come out with her books, but it is worth every day we wait. Cruel Lies is an emotional roller coaster, suspenseful, dark, and at times scary even.
Caspian and Willow are never to be; everything and everyone says so. These two are kept apart for a reason, and no matter how much they fight it and want to be together, life gets in the way. While reading this book, the secrets are there, and the lies that are told are everything keeping you going. You will keep reading because you have to know the answers; you want to dig deeper and why things are happening.
Caspian is not the hero in this story, at least not yet. I am hoping that will change with the next book. Willow is a complicated character that is given a bad hand in life. But she will overcome everything and fight for what she feels is right. I love that about her.
Cruel Lies is a dark new adult college romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Alexander Neal and Sarah Puckett. This is the first book in the Cruel Secrets Duet.
This is the first book of Faith's that I have read, and it won't be my last. I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. The relationship between Caspian and Willow is messy but I can't help but root for them. I really enjoyed getting both of their points of views throughout the book.
The book ended on a great cliffhanger that left me begging for more. I can't wait for the next book Cruel Promises to be released on audio so I can get the rest of their story.
Alexander and Sarah did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.
I would recommend this book if you like dark romances, mafia romances, secret society romances, college romances, bully romances, or romantic suspense.
Full of suspense, mystery, and tons of angry chemistry (enemy-to-lovers boiling over passion kind of chemistry).
Cruel Lies is a mix of mafia, secret society, intrigue, forbidden love, dark secrets, dark moments, basically it had all my favorites mixed into one story. It's an attention grabber from the very beginning and this is just first half of the duet.
Willow loses her entire family at a young age, but is burdened with a huge secret that tears apart the one relationship she holds dear, Caspian her best friend and first love. Her life ends up tailspinning and catapulting into unknowns she never saw coming, but to make matters worse, her ex-best friend isn't done ruining her life.
Caspian is used to living under the rule of unrealistic expectations under his father's unloving hand, but when his father specifically tells him to stay away from Willow, it's like dangling the forbidden fruit before his eyes. Caspian may have missed his best friend for years, but when she begins at Raventhorn she becomes his forbidden obsession.
At first Caspian only wants Willow for the forbidden passion, but soon long hidden secrets come to light and the old Caspian he thought he'd buried comes out and he suddenly needs to protect the woman Willow has become.
Cruel Lies has so much mystery, passion, and forbidden darkness at every turn. Yum.
This book hooked me from the very first chapter. Caspian and Willow go through so much. There is friendship, to tragedy, to love, to betrayal. So much happened in this story it had my emotions on a rollercoaster. Willow and Caspian's relationship went through so many stages. It started in friendship, then went to enemies and bullying, then to lovers, and now back to mistrust. This book was so exciting and had me wanting to read it late into the night. The world these two live in (Bratva/ secret society) is dangerous and exausting! If you read this story you have to read the next because the things that happened in the last chapter have me eagerly anticipating when I can start the next book and see what happens. This was such a good read!
If this book didn’t end with such a big cliffhanger then I wouldn’t be considering reading the next one. I don’t think I will read the next one honestly though. I’m not sure what exactly is throwing me off with this book, but it’s just not my favorite. It got better towards the end, but just not enough to make me love it.
I wanted to like this more than I did. I’ve had it on my kindle for way too long. It wasn’t even that I didn’t want to read it, more like I was saving for when I wanted a “sure thing” for a great read.
This isn’t terrible by any means it was just very disappointing. The pacing is excruciatingly slow especially in the beginning. I had a bad feeling from the start because I don’t typically like books that have to give lots of back story to get to actual story. The first 30-ish percent is all interludes from their childhoods. It’s not all unimportant but it was an obnoxious long way to deliver information I’d have been fine with just reading as an info dump exposition.
The pacing didn’t improve once we arrived in present day. This is something I loathe about duets and series, much of feels like filler in this story.
One of the cruxes of angst here is the forbidden aspect but I just found it annoying. I want my heroes to be insanely OTT possessive and he couldn’t really do that because she was off limits. In addition to Hs father forbidding H from seeing her, she spends nearly the entire book forcibly engaged to a total scum bucket.
Really the only parts I enjoyed where near the end when he got possessive. The rest of the story just fell short.
Slow burn, there is a decent amount of voyeurism, masturbation and foreplay scenes peppered through the book - however they don’t have sex until 75% or so.
Virgin h, of course. Despite being hung up on her it clearly didn’t stop him from being a complete manwhore No separation Cliffhanger
Safety - not the safest read. H has clearly sown his wild oats all over the place despite supposedly pining for h (haha). They are forbidden so not really together. She’s engaged to a douchebag who openly cheats on her. We do see H get an on page BJ from OW early on while fantasizing about h *eye roll*.
I’m going to read book 2 because I want closure but I’m expecting to be disappointed.
This story is cruel to the heart and there are many layers in this mafia world. My heart broke towards the end and I felt the pressure on Caspian shoulders...YES THERE IS A CLIFFHANGER and one of my fav characters is in a...no spoliers
There is a surpise in this book that I love which is the images. My favs are the last 2 becuase I can see his emotions of anger & frustration
Willow has a good heart and my heart broke when she was...no spoilers. There was a girl in that "place" and I want to know her story. Caspian did have a good heart when they were childhood friends now it just black because of the serious of events...no spoilers
Their love story is beautifully forbidden and the rules of the mafia is in the way & endless suspense with who killed who? Past & present who will survive is the serious question...no spoilers
There are some many quotes I love that tug on the heart strings and this one is my fav. You are in Caspian mind set and this moment is 😘 I can not wait for you to read this moment
"This place is the only place left in my mind where the sky is still blue, your hair is still a vibrate red, and your eyes still love me."
Cruel Lies Cruel Secrets Duet By: Faith Summers, Khardine Gray Narrated by: Alexander Neal, Sarah Puckett
This is a fantastic dark mafia, secret society college bully romance. The story grabbed my attention right from the start and held it captive for the entire book. It is my first book written by Faith Summers and I enjoyed her writing style and the complexity and layers of the story and its originality. The plotting and world building are fantastic, as are the character development and growth. Willow Raventhorn and Caspian Ivanov were best of friends growing up, both their families are Bratva and hold power in a secret society. But a betrayal tore their friendship apart, a betrayal of their parents. But that did not change Willow's or her sister’s role in the society and the same goes for Caspian. Caspian is preparing for knighthood while attending Raventhorn University, the same school as Willow. The once friends are now enemies, Willow would like otherwise and Caspian, who is pretending otherwise, pretending that he hates her. His act starts to slip though and when he finds out she has been receiving threatening notes, his protective mode kicks in and despite his father’s warning to stay away from her, he can not help himself. There is never a dull moment in this book, the story has plenty of drama, angst, twists and turns, mystery, thrilling suspense, heartfelt emotions and a slow burn enemies to lovers romance. Faith Summers, thank you for this great story and he wild ride. I am looking forward to what comes next in the “Cruel Secrets” duet, I hope it is coming to audio soon.
🎧📚🎧 And for the fantastic narration, Alexander Neal and Sarah Puckett did an amazing job bringing these characters to life and did so with a complete understanding of who they were portraying, giving each their own distinct voice and were believable in every role they played. Sarah Puckett nailed it as Willow, grasping every side of her personality, and Alexander Neal did the same for Caspian. Both played their roles with perfection, including the roles for the secondary characters. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling every single one. These entertaining storytellers are versatile voice artists and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fabulous listen.
This is an amazing story about childhood friends and enemies - Willow and Caspian whose’s families are involved in the Russian Bratva and a Secret Society of soldiers that live by their oaths. Willow has lost both her parents and Caspian his mother at young age at the same time. There are secrets behind the deaths and when Caspian finds out Willows he promises to destroy her! Then shortly after Willow loses her older sister Lillian after she saves her life. All this turmoil, secrets and ruthlessness of others in the background, Willow is forced into a mental institution having an extremely hard time surviving what she knows happened against what others say she should know. Years later Caspian’s older brother is killed and Caspian is the disappointing son knows he needs to step up even though his father the Pakhan says he can’t fill his shoes. Willow is released to her aunt and uncle who have helped raise her and Lillian years ago help Willow get back to normal. Once Willow is ready to leave for college at Raventhorn University that her ancestors are the founding family. When Caspian is warned by his father to stay away from Willow as she is promised to another and will be married shortly he follows his heart over his mind. The pull between them is something that has been there from childhood and once Caspian pushes Willow do they become more and it’s one steamy joining that brings them a false sense of love and safety. As Caspian and his cousin Thorne investigate Zak’s murder they discover secrets along with Willow having threatening notes, being stalked and almost killed does Caspian realize he wants Willow as his and goes all out to protect her and find out what happened to Lillian. Caspian is one dark Alpha man who has a dark heart that only starts beating after Willow returns to him. This story ends in a cliffhanger that promises darkness, lies, secrets and hopefully peace and love for Willow and Caspian. I look forward to see how Lucian and Ellish, Willow’s best friends either stay her friend or enemies working for those out to end Willow’s life to get what they want - her family company and all the power of the Bratva and Secret Society. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Willow and Caspian were best friends from a young age and that friendship started to grow deeper as they got older. Then everything changed. Willow’s father had been having an affair with Caspian’s mother for over two years. When Willow first discovered it, her father swore her to secrecy. That secret ultimately cost her Caspian’s friendship after Willow’s mother was found dead at their home, supposed suicide and her father and Caspian’s mother were killed in a car accident. Both of their fathers were powerful men but now Caspian’s father became Pakhan and leader of the knights. Caspian became Willow’s enemy, promising to destroy her. Willow and her older sister went to live with their godparents and it was while they were all camping that Lillian dragged Willow out in to the night and they ran for their lives being chased by two unknown men. But nobody believed Willow’s account and she found herself in a mental hospital. Lillian was simply ‘missing’. When she eventually learned how to play the system her life was able to resume, including the excitement of going to university. Caspian was now a fully fledged member the powerful and deadly secret society owned by the Komarovski Bratva., and was still a thorn in her side. A heartbreaking one as she could never forgive herself by lying to her best friend because of her love for her father. Wow! This book kickstarts a duet, so you know to expect a cliffhanger and boy do you get one! The story is well written, intriguing and riveting from the start. Brava, a deadly secret society, two young hearts broken and still in need of repair, so many twists, turns, loops and dead ends. And passion, lots of passion. Absolutely fantastic.. I received a free copy of this book via Cherrylily ARCs and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What a fantastic story! I had a very hard time putting this book down and now I cannot wait to read the conclusion to this duet! This is the story of Caspian and Willow. They are both a part of a “secret society” more powerful than any Bratva or mafia. Caspian and Willow grew up together until secrets destroyed the friendship they had. Willow lost her parents and Caspian lost his mother, so both were heartbroken. While Caspian went on to become strong and tough, Willow didn’t have it as easy. She also lost her sister a few years later. She and her sister were in danger but no one believed Willow and thought she was crazy. Willow was weak, insecure and clueless sometimes!
When Willow gets to college, of course Caspian is there as well. He is obsessed with Willow and cannot stay away from her even though she is promised to another and was ordered by his father to stay away from her. Willow is being threatened and isn’t sure who she can trust. She is trying to find out what actually happened to her sister and at the same time Caspian is trying to figure out what happened to his brother Zach who was murdered a few years earlier. Is everything connected somehow? Who is behind all of this?
Secrets, lies, deceptions, coverups, betrayal, twists & turns, friendship, loyalty, murder, suspense, mystery and some steamy scenes make up the wonderful, addicting story! Will an evil father win? Will Caspian and Willow be able to find out what really happened to their siblings? This book ends on a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see what happens with Willow and Caspian’s story. Great story, great characters leave me wanting more from Faith Summers and Khardine Gray!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Let me start this review off by saying I will most definitely be reading more of Faith Summers books!! This book was freaking awesome. Tragic, dark, suspenseful and so unbelievably heartwarming in a dark cruel way. It’s hard to actually put to words exactly how I feel emotionally after reading this…..well one does…..DESTROYED. I can not wait for book two, to be able to put my broken pieces back together. Ugh I hope they can be anyway. What a freaking ride this book was.
This is the first part of Willow and Caspian’ dark and tragic story. Best Friends from a very young age, they both come from families connected to the Bratva and Secret Societies. Both suffer from great tragic loss that causes a rift between them and one proclaiming them as enemies. Willow continues to suffer even more loss due to secrets and plights she knows nothing about. She finds herself at her lowest when she’s committed when she makes strong claims about her sister. Years later she is thrown back into Caspian’s world and they both find themselves toeing lines they should not be crossing. But you can only deny your heart for so long.
You have to read this book to get the full emotional rollercoaster of these two characters. They are both so broken and shrouded in darkness and all they have is each other even if they’re not supposed to. Two tortured souls trying to find the light. This ends on a serious cliffhanger and can’t wait for the second book to find out what will happen to these two and if they will finally find their HEA that they so desperately deserve. 100% recommend this book!!
Outstanding! This book is unputdownable. It was intense, gripping and had me captivated from start to finish. I freaking loved Caspian and Willow. Willow is the epitome of inner strength and determination. Her life went from bad to worse, hell on earth. But she persevered. She got up, dusted herself off and continued on. Caspian is the cruel boy with a big heart. Yes that may be an oxymoron but when you read this book you will understand exactly why I said it. He’s rough and tough. And he has hardened his heart. He’s loyal and brave and he’s the guy you want to have your back. But fear to have as your enemy. I loved that they started out as childhood friends. They were joined at the hip. But circumstances and events have destroyed what they once had. Years later fate has brought them together again. And what started as a crush has turned into so much more. The yearning, the passion, the lust is definitely undeniable. It’s like a caged beast ready to bust out. Try as they may to stay away from one another it is an impossible task. They are drawn and attracted together like steel to a magnet. Caspian and Willow burn bright and ignite. I loved the pull each has for the other. I love their connection and how time may have warped it but it never severed nor broke. The story and plot are absolutely thrilling and intense. The intrigue and mischief going on had me on the edge of my seat. My heart pounding wildly and my heart rate erratic. Secrets waiting to be revealed. A mystery ready to be solved. And revenge to be had. Loved, loved, loved this book. And that whooper of a cliffhanger demands that I read Cruel Promises asap!
Cruel Lies Cruel Secrets Duet By: Faith Summers, Khardine Gray Narrated by: Alexander Neal, Sarah Puckett
Get ready for a wild ride. Faith Summers takes us on the start to an incredible journey! This is a dark mafia, new adult, bully romance, packed with action, angst and fantastic characters. Caspian and Willow were best friends. Destined to be together, a secret leads to tragedy and betrayal ripping the friendship apart. Fast forward, the two are now attending Raventhorn University, and Caspian is planning to tear Willow apart. But the pull of their childhood feelings and undeniable attraction is tugging at his heart. There are expectations though and Caspian cannot be with Willow. After finding out she is being followed though, and danger is lurking, will Caspian choose honor or family? Caspian is a complex character and each layer finds a different feeling. Willow is a strong woman, ready to excel at her mission, but her one achilles heel is Caspian. Where does it all end? The cliffhanger is a killer, so I am anxiously awaiting to see just how his story all shakes out! The perfect mix of dark and dangerous with a bit of spicy passion, it left me wanting more!
The narration of this makes the story even better! Sarah Puckett lends her voice as Willow. From a child to an adult, she brings out her emotional load and had me feeling it all her ups and downs. Alexander Neal comes in as Caspian. Dark, dangerous, mean, sweet, protective, angry, you name it, he pulls out all the stops. This character has a lot going on, and he nails each scene. It's a fantastic listen and I look forward to the conclusion.
Caspian’s life is far too tragic for someone so young so it’s not hard to understand all the rage he feels, especially toward his father. Willow has lived through terror of her own, losing her family in pieces and being left virtually alone. They should have each other but keeping secrets for those she loved cost Willow the one person who meant everything to her. They seem to be making their way back to one another but there are so many obstacles in the way, not the least of which is his father, the Pakhan, has forbidden Caspian to have any contact with Willow.
They go from loving to loathing each other and back again as they struggle to find a place in their strange world: Caspian as the heir his father never wanted and Willow struggling for control of her own life. This story is full of action and suspense so I couldn’t put it down. Besides Willow and Caspian, there’s an intriguing cast of supporting characters and plenty of bad guys, too. The story ends on a cliffhanger being the first in a duet and there’s still more than a month to the release date for book 2 so all of my impatience is boiling over. I can’t wait to see where it goes next.
Khardine Gray has done it again! Only this time she has delivered a true cliffhanger in a two-part book of twists, turns, murder, complications, past, presents, futures, Bratva, rivalries, friendships and love. Caspian Ivanov is the youngest and surviving son of Alekander Ivanov, Pahkan of all. His elder and adored brother Zak is mysteriously killed. Murdered while a student at Raventhorne Academy. Willow Raventhorne, is the last surviving member of the famous Raventhornes, founder of the Academy and childhood friend of Caspian. Her elder sister, Lillian has mysteriously died which resulted in Willow’s incarceration in a mental hospital. Her parents and Caspian’s beloved mother are also dead. Are these deaths somehow connected? Caspian has sworn to destroy Willow, an aspiring journalism student. However…. Twists and turns. They confront each other and…. In typical fashion, Ms Gray leaves bread crumbs for the readers to follow but…. Caspian is determined to keep Willow. Both are determined to solve the mystery surrounding their siblings deaths. And this reader wants BOOK 2 to see where these twists and turns will lead….. there are Willow’s & Caspian’s friends Lucian, Ellish and Thorne who know or do they?
Witty, clever, intriguing dialogue and characters as always. Well done Khardine Gray. Could NOT put this one down! A DEFINITE MUST READ.
I absolutely devoured this book. I have loved the Faith Summers stories I've read in the past, so I jumped on the chance to listen to this audible, and now I'm very unsure if I can wait for the next audio to release or if I'm going to need to "cheat" and grab the kindle version so I can finish up Caspian and Willow's story asap. It was captivating, I just love the worlds she builds.
Alexander Neal and Sarah Puckett did a fantastic job narrating this story. Sarah has quickly become one of my favorite narrators and I am tempted to grab anything she works on to be honest. I've never listened to Alexander before, but really loved his work and I'm excited to listen to him on Cruel Promises when it releases.
The best friends to enemies to lovers to possible enemies again aspect of this story was really great. I loved that they had this rich history when they were younger that went sour after some secrets came out. Fast forward a few years to college and they just can't stay away no matter how much they hate each other. I loved their chemistry so much and Caspian's push and pull to protect her but also keep hating her was perfection.
The cliffhanger got me so good and I can't freaking wait for the finale. We get two huge mysteries with no clear leads and it has me itching to pick up the next book right now. I'm going to try and be patient, but we'll see how long that lasts.
