Samuel Small has been writing stories since he was five years old. His earliest book, titled Mario, was a thrilling tale in which the titular character had to jump up to get a key to open a door. His stories have gotten even more riveting over the years, now consisting of more than one sentence per page.

What can I say about this collection that previous reviews haven't said? I WILL say that I'm cheating a little, as I haven't finished the book but have reached the 3/4s mark, enough to write an honest review.

Small, in discussing this collection, states he was a scared child, and his fears, at least partially - inspired this collection. He also sates that hies reading of Stephen King novels inspired him to become a writer himself.

There is nothing wrung with being labeled an "iindie" writer....many professional writers started this way. But, as Stephen Jones once wrote "Everyone thinks they have a book in them. They don't". I'm not going to write that Small is a bad writer - just inexperienced. Several of his stories are based on interesting ideas - vampires using social media ("Let me In"), the first day of a zombie holocaust ("Gone Stiff"), or being caught in the drain of a swimming pool ("The Bottom").

Where the disconnect in my mind is the EXECUTION. "Night" could have been cut by 1/3, which might have made the stories stronger. The book is overwritten.....parsimony would have been a better writing gambit. In "Gone Stiff", he uses God in back to back sentences...in another he writes of a character who was "water running down her legs like piss".....Geeze. Why use 25 words when you can use a 100?

Watching horror movies and reading Stephen King does not make you a horror writer.

I'll look forward t reading more of his work with a little more experience under his belt....

Nice collection of horror short stories

Some were predictable, others not so much. Either way, they were good! I look forward to more work by Samuel Small!

A beautifully crafted, highly entertaining horror collection. It has everything a horror fan might ask for: creepy and fun (everyone should read the opening tales "Let Me In" and "Amusement"), horrific (the last story "Woman In White" deserve special mention), even downright brutal ("Thumbs Up" is a particularly disturbing story; also anyone who enjoyed Adam Nevill's The Ritual will find a lot to like in "The Woods"). Small manages to cover a lot of ground, putting up content warnings whenever needed; he can offer dark, brooding pieces to stories with haunting endings. The only complaint is that the stories sometimes are too short and have irresolvable endings. Nevertheless, the whole collection deserves wide recognition. Highly recommend if you're into Twilight Zone horror, and anything of this vein!

Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.

Great Twists and Turns 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

One of the best short horror stories book I've read in years. I read every story and am going to pick another of this writers books to read.
Even though The Fog and the Truck Driver stories grabbed me, they were not in the "whoa!" category as the other stories. 💀
