Prince of Sins and Fae of Rewyth Book 2FAE OF REWYTH
House of Lies and SorrowPrince of Sins and ShadowsShow no weakness. Yield no mercy.
Jade may have survived her wedding night in the ruthless kingdom of Rewyth, but her battle is far from over. Thrown into yet another new world, Jade is forced to fight between her heart and her intuition as humans and fae pull her in opposite directions. Jade is no longer the only human in sight, yet she finds herself defending the fae more and more.
Malachi's life is thrown into a spiral as he learns more about his father's lies, his mother's secrets, and his wife's destiny. He is willing to protect Jade at all costs, even if she's in more danger with every passing day. Fighting his instincts as the Prince of Shadows, Malachi is forced to submit to human ruling, following his mother's plan to unite humans and fae and create peace in the human kingdom of Fearford.
Jade and Malachi's journey continues in Prince of Sins and Shadows as new enemies, ancient prophecies, and mythical creatures threaten them every step of the way. Will their bond defy the true nature of who they really are? Or will they succumb to the strong forces that pull them apart?
Prince of Sins and Shadows is book 2 in the Fae of Rewyth series, a Young Adult Arranged Marriage Fae Fantasy Romance series. Readers who love slow-burn romances, enemies-to-lovers, classic fantasy romance tropes, and broody winged males will love this series!
I’m just not a huge fan of this one. I like the general premise of it, but I think the main issue this book has is that it tried to cram a lot in without really expanding on what happened, so a lot of major plot points felt shallow and underdeveloped. For instance, everything at the end felt very rushed. Something crazy would happen and then all of a sudden we’d be moving on. There was hardly any internal monologue about how the characters felt about what was going on around them.
I was not a fan of how flip-floppy the MMC was with his feelings for the FMC. His mood swings were out of nowhere and prompted by nothing. They were going great and all of a sudden they can’t be together because he said so, but there was nothing happening in the plot that would’ve guided him towards the decision to distance himself. Again, the decisions where underdeveloped and shallow.
I wanted more tensions between the two when they were “off”. It was said he ignored her for weeks! That’s a really long time and it went by in like a paragraph. I wanted more of those tense conversations and them getting advice from side characters or something.
It wasn’t just the MMC who was inconsistent with his actions. So we’re multiple sides characters. I think the author was trying to go for duplicitous, but it just came off as confusing and inconsistent.
I got really frustrated with a lot of the dialogue in the middle of the book. They were all just talking in circles around each other, and I know that it was meant to be to keep the FMC and the reader in the dark for shock/twist factor, but it was just ridiculous. The conversations went on way too long with the characters dodging questions or answering questions with questions or just blatantly ignoring them. The FMC would ask a question three times and the other characters would find a way to not answer it all on one page. It was boring and repetitive.
I wished the antagonists had more development (I sound like a broken record, but here we are). It was a twist, so we obviously couldn’t have had it spelled out, but there was hardly any scenes with them. There was no build up. No questions were answered in this book. The plot had a lot of potential, but the author did not do it justice at all.
Okay. I wanted to like it, but I didn’t. The character development was severely lacking. I’m not talking insta-love, I’m talking about the back and forth “I love her, I’m too tortured to love her.” It was so forced with little to no character development to back it up. Jade is in love with Malachi and vice versa, but they literally don’t know each other and there was no build up to them caring for each other. It’s like the author just told us they’re in love and we’re just supposed to root for them.
The battle scene and double cross was lack luster and obvious from the start. Not explaining what Jade is and the supposed “prophecy” felt like an attempt to add intrigue and mystery but, again, it didn’t. Blackwood is a master at tell not show. I felt like I was reading a cut-and-dry recipe for YA fantasy. Not even a recipe on a blog. Those are far more in-depth and emotionally riveting than this novel.
I get sequels are “background and building” novels, but I learned nothing. The only redeeming quality about this book is the mother. I want to know what her deal is. She’s the best written character in my opinion and I’m curious to see what her story line looks like.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Every, and I mean every, character has completely 180s in terms of their characteristics. The story moves along too quickly for this to be chalked up to the mysterious prophecy or keeping loved ones at arms length for protection.
This story should have wrapped with book 1. So much of this story is superfluous and just confuses the reader. If this is the direction the writer wanted to go in, book 1 should have gone into much more detail
3.5 stars I was very up and down with Jade. I’m really enjoying the story and I’m so excited to see what happens next. But I really don’t like how she was so hot and cold with Malachi and the ending. Like If you have read it you know what happens with her and Malachi. But girl he whispered in your ear to warn you, you know he would never hurt you on purpose like that and if he hadn’t done what he did then you would have NO ONE on your side who could actually protect you. If she hadn’t kept shutting down or randomly spurning him through the book I would have had a higher rating. Malachi isn’t perfect but he is doing all he can when she still can’t fully protect herself. To add yes Malachi was also back and forth but in one section. She was back and forth the entire book until he did it back to her. She would get embarrassed being close to him just cause humans were around. Like…. I’m sorry he is your husband and you actually want him around?? Be confident in that
Two words to describe this book : A Rollercoaster In one second Malachi (the main male character) barely talks to her (Jade) and the other second he wants her to come with him to Rewyth.
Jade Farrow. - a strong, beautiful woman Malachi - the prince of shadows - who would do ANYTHING to protect her
Quotes: I pushed away the butterflies I felt by being so close to him again. I hated that he did this to me.
“If anything happens in there, Malachi, I want you to know that this little arrangement has been more than a surprise to me. You’ve been pleasantly different than I imagined. And you’ve saved my life countless times, which you never had to do. And I don’t know if I properly thanked you or not, but this might be my last chance. So, thank you.”
“You’re not fine, Jade. What happened? Why was that man following you?” Isaiah approached behind Lucien. “What’s going on?” he asked. Great. An audience. “Why do you even care?” I asked Lucien. “You were the one ready to torture me not too long ago.” - “Things have changed since then, Jade. If you want me to rip that guy’s head off, I will. Or better yet, I’ll tell Malachi what just happened.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, looking her up and down and making sure she wasn’t hurt. “You aren’t hurt?” “No, I’m fine,” she said, sounding more annoyed than anything. “I’m fine, Malachi.” It was impossible. I had aimed my power at every single person standing in front of me in that field.
Every so often, I would glance at Malachi. He didn’t speak to me. Didn’t even give me instruction. But here and there I would look at him only to find him already looking at me. He never looked away first, either. Just kept staring.
“Rewyth is your home, Jade,” he said. His voice was low and serious. “Rewyth will always be a home to you, even if you wish to leave.” I met his gaze. “You would let me leave?” A sad smile played on his lips. “You’re not my prisoner, Jade. My father forced us to marry. When he’s dead…”
It was in a way that made me want to protect her with my life. And I would. I would do anything to protect her.
“You kill me, your precious peacemaker dies, too.” And I pressed the blade to Jade’s throat.
Malachi wasn’t going to let anyone else have me. Dead or alive
“He didn’t, though. He didn’t give up on you, Jade. Look, I’ve never seen my brother act this way. He’s… he’s a completely different person. He can barely live with himself for what he did to you. Just don’t give up on him so quickly, okay? There’s someone in there worth saving.”
“If the price of winning is Paragon blood being shed, princess, then Paragon blood will be shed.” I stated. “We will go to war against the Paragon.”
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HONESTLY JADE IF YOU DONT WANT MALACHAI IM COMPLETELY FINE WITH THAT, MORE FOR ME BETCH. Jade grow up, honestly, he held a knife to you. Okay? Malachai is an exception, you need to realise that. And Did he not whisper “trust me” with a soft smile before that or did you choose to ignore it and be all “dOnT tOuCh mE” YOU MADE HIM CRY. YOU MADE THE KING OF REWYTH, THE PRINCE (or should I say now king🤭) OF SHADOWS CRY. He literally did it to protect you, he repeated that a million times, and now he’s torturing himself over it and it’s all your fault. Anyways absolutely loved this book, Jade just pissed me off a little bit with her ego and she decided to use it against Malachai when he quite literally made her into the badass that he loves. Jade grow up, do better, and treat my man how he deserves to be treated. Malachai I hope you know that I am completely and utterly in love with you, genuinely, no exaggeration intended. This isn’t even a review this is just pure confession and a crap talking session. But despite it… thank you for listening my fellow friends🤍
I liked but didn't love this series. Taking it easy because this is a self published author. No easy task! The book needed a little love in the editing department and lacked the world building that I adore in the fantasy genre. Not a bad read though!
Pros: Good main story line. I definitely liked this book and I do want to finish the series. This is an easy and enjoyable read. The main female character Jade is intriguing and overall enjoyable. I like the characters and really enjoy their interactions for the most part. This book was easy to get sucked into and I am absolutely going to continue the series. This author has amazing ideas and potential so I'm not giving up yet!
Cons: This series has so much potential due the great story line. However the writing fell a little flat. The plot is pretty scattered and hard to follow at times because it bounces around a lot. I would have liked more world building and back stories for some of the fae. The slow burn was there but a little undeveloped and lacked detail.
I loved LOVED House of Lies and Sorrow. Unfortunately I think sequelitis got this one. That, and possibly the author's rush to capitalize on the success of the first.
The first half of the book moved kind of slow. I quickly grew frustrated with the number of unnecessary secrets being kept from the protagonist. And the amount of drama for the sake of drama between the main two (especially at the end, come on Jade, the tantrum there was ridiculous.)
But that said it's a fast read and I love Malachi enough that I will continue. He and Jade carried the story where the (very interesting , actually) plot was rushed to get back to the romance. I think this book could easily have been longer and more detailed. I want to see more of the story and have it all feel less rushed because there is SO much potential here. I really hope book three picks her back up.
3 1/2 stars. Fast read. This story is not complicated and a lot of detail missing at times. It’s an easy read to just sink into and enjoy. I finished it in a day. I enjoy their back and forth and the emotions as childish as they may be some times. It’s really easy to fall in love with the characters. The ending was rushed, and sometimes, more details would have been nice. Still, I liked this and will read the whole series.
2.5 ⭐️ Alrighty so first thing I wanna address…THE FMC IS 17 WHEN SHE IS FORCED INTO MARRIAGE….Yeauh that’s a big NOPE for me. Also I’d be drunk if I took a shot everytime someone said “saints”. This was giving major Walmart version of ACTOR but now all of a sudden it’s given Walmart version of twilight. There is the paragon (Volturi vibes) who rule the fae and consist of the most powerful fae. 🙄
Mal is just slaying things in this book. Ya know his relationships mostly. lol. My goodness I was excited to learn partially what Jade is capable of. I was also excited to be rid of a few select people. On to the next book.
Tropes: Enemies to lovers Age gap Fae/witch Touch her and die
