Though brief, this volume covers the preliminaries for the qualifiers for the Spring Tournament.
This volume is probably the least interesting (to me) compared to the last 3 or so -- as a reader, you know that Karasuno is going to get through these matches no problemo, so there aren’t any stakes really -- but I like that Furudate is slowly ramping things up for the inevitable epic matches to come.
The only thing I dislike about this volume is the match with Ohgiminami. It’s full-on boring and the B story with the greaser looking guy and his team’s ex-captain did nothing for me, haha. Thankfully, the match with the second school was more interesting to read. One of the things that most attracts me to this series is that the characters have to actually problem-solve and work hard to overcome obstacles instead of just relying on innate skill (like say… Kuroko’s Basketball, haha).
The humour of this series really hits the mark too. The scene with Kageyama trying to look inconspicuous is too good.
"'Getting serious.' 'Trying hard.' 'Giving it your all.' None of those things are lame!!"
Be still my heart, if I could go live in the world that is Haikyu!!, I would! I know people talk about having book characters as best friends, but this series is the first time I can say I super felt that way. I honestly wish I could bring them all to life and hangout with them all the time. It would be AMAZING! *sobs*
Absolutely loved seeing all these guys make such an epic comeback in winning after losing so many games in the training camp! Yes, they definitely learned a lot, but it's nice to see them in victory! They continue to overcome obstacles and just grow as individuals and as a team. They are amazing! <3
I had completely forgotten the two teams they play in this one! Furudate has this really incredible way of even if you are cheering for our main guys, you still want to see the other teams grow and come back even more powerful the next year. At least I felt this way with these two teams!
And speaking of, I LOVE Captain Akki! Even though he's graduated, I love how he encouraged his previous team and supported them from the stands. Also, his hair was super cute! (Also that quote in the beginning was from the amazing Akki!)
Such an incredible volume and deeply enjoyed seeing Hinata in action with his new aerial attacks!
1. i also have to pee when i get nervous. i feel you, shoyo 2. i always feel so sad for each team that loses T_T like, they all work hard!!!! it's unfair!!! but if there's gonna be a winner, there has to be a loser, too :( 3. oikawa is a Pretty Boy!(TM) 4. apathy crew extraordinaire: akaashi, kenma, tsukki (love, love, love, love)
Karasuno beat Ohgi Minami and Kakugawa in straight sets therefore advancing to the qualifier round. Kei's progress is astounding and he's just getting started!
This counts as my review for the whole Haikyuu!! manga
”You don’t win alone. That’s just how it is.”
READ FOR: best character developments and themes that I have ever encountered READING LEVEL: Level 1-3 out of 5
*All of my reviews are as spoiler-free as possible unless stated otherwise*
I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.
It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.
When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.
PLOT: ★★★★★ The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.
ART STYLE: ★★★★★ The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.
CHARACTERS: ★★★★★ The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.
The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.
This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.
*cough* hinata kageyama atsumu sakusa bokuto kita noya ushijima tendou tsukki suga kenma kuroo *cough* +++
Note: if you think this series is focused on only 1 team... you're in it for A RIDEEEEEE
I'm getting chills just looking at and remembering these panels ^^
THEMES: ★★★★★ Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper.
I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++
The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.
PACING: ★★★★★ THE TIMING. OF EVERYTHING. JUST MAKES SENSE.
It’s so realistic that I want to cry. (I actually already did… a lot of times.)
PAGE TURNER: ★★★★★
You should understand that I made this review weeks after I finally calmed down about this series cuz I was really going crazy about it HAHAHA if you have finished this series too or met me while I was reading this, you know what I’m talking about ;)
I'll keep this series close to my heart until the grave. You cannot convince me otherwise.
What an awesome start to this new arc! And do I detect a Tsukishima character arc? During a tournament?? Can I be so lucky??!
But seriously, this was a great volume. It's always interesting to see different play styles and attitudes towards the sport. What I appreciate the most about this, and about this series as a whole, is how limited the drama is. I'm not saying drama in sports manga/anime are bad, but sometimes I feel like they focus so much on the drama that the sport side isn't as engaging. Also, something that I FUCKING ADORE, is that nobody's really an asshole or shit human being meant to make the readers hate them so we can have an antagonist. Instead, these are just a bunch of kids playing sports and dealing with all the things that go with that. Yes, some of the team members are assholes, but they're not awful people. It's so refreshing to sit down and read a series and not give myself a pep talk ahead of time because some characters I can't stand are in it.
Anyways, looking forward to the rest of this arc! Can't wait to see where it goes!
top contenders for the eighth wonder of the world: kuroo’s blocking, the #swageyama guise, that single panel of seijoh third years looking Ready to Rumble, akaashi kenma & tsukki otherwised dubbed “apathy crew,” YAMS GETTING HIS FIRST JUMP FLOAT PAST NOYASKSJDHD, & that one-shot disk- disus- discussion on the provenance & limitations of noya’s popularity in which kageyama unfortunately gets killed in action
Not: Yachi ve Nishinoya'yı ASLA çarpılmış cizmiyorlar. Diğerleri basık çaydanlık ve mangaka kesinlikle Kags'in kıçına aşık. Kahretsin
When I'm reading Haikyu!!, I have some sympathy for the opposing team even though I'm rooting for Karasuno. I can't say the same for Kakugawa. Their overreliance on Hyakuzawa because of his height is pathetic. It especially bothers me because the series has been stressing the importance of teamwork from the beginning, whether it's addressing Kageyama's tyrannic rule of the court or showcasing how the best teams work around each other's strengths and weaknesses, so it's super satisfying when they do lose.
these first few games of the tournament have been pretty nice to read. i like how each of the characters are working on something— hinata and kageyama on their quick set, yamaguchi on his serving, tsukkishima on his blocking, etc. AND i truly enjoy how the author really showcases their motivations for getting stronger <3
Chefkiss.
