Marla White started her illustrious career as a storyteller at the age of four by drawing on the TV screen to help Winky Dink get out of mortal danger, earning her a firm spanking. Deterred by the negative feedback, she studied to be a park ranger instead until she realized it was really a TV show about park rangers she liked, not the actual outdoors.

After a stint working in local TV as an assistant/hand model/ad copywriter and occasionally a camera operator, she came out west. Her first job was working for the producers of “A League of Their Own” but no, the character of Marla is not named after her. She’s been involved in several award winning television movies and was the head of television for Emmy Award winner Peter Tolan’s Fedora Entertainment. Additionally, she teaches story analysis and story workshop at UCLA Extension.

Appropriately, she found out on April Fool’s Day she’d sold her first book, "The Starlight Mint Surprise Murder” to Wild Rose Press.

Murder in the stables…can Emily find the killer before she’s next? Emily won’t ever forget the moment she discovers her friend’s body in the stall. It’s a gruesome way to die. When the police arrive, they’re quick to blame the horse but no horse could do this. She takes the detective named Justin back to the stall and he determines it’s murder. Emily’s world goes off-kilter and she’s not sure what to do. She wants to help the police find the killer, but she’s got secrets of her own that she doesn’t want to reveal. More than that, she’s unnerved by the attraction to handsome Justin. What should she do? When she can no longer deny her feelings, things get dicey. Suddenly both of their lives are in danger. There’s a murderer on the loose and Emily knows too much. Can she fall in love without losing her life?

Cause for Elimination is a riveting romantic mystery I couldn’t put down. I’m a big horse lover so the premise of this book appealed to me right away. From the first page to the last, I was hooked. It all starts with the writing. Marla White used her experience in the horse competition arena to infuse the story with authenticity. The descriptive narration combined with the plot progression makes for a gripping whodunit. The romantic subplot was well-written with plenty of swoony moments. What I liked about the romance part was how it wasn’t heavy on romance. It was realistic but didn’t overshadow the mystery. I got invested in the story real quick and at times couldn’t stop reading. The ending was a bit of a surprise. Another brilliant romantic mystery penned by Marla White, Cause for Elimination deserves to be in the winner’s circle and enjoyed by the masses.

I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Marla White and Goddess Fish Promotions. I'm excited to be a part of this tour. Now onto my review!

In Cause for Elimination, we meet Emily Conners, horse lover and member of a tight-knight equestrian community. When her boss, Pamela Yates is found murdered, Emily begins sleuthing around. Determined to solve the case, Detective Justin Butler looks to Emily for help. As their search for the murderer heats up, so do their chemistry. Lives in danger they are forced to work together to solve the case before the murdered strikes again.

The characters in this book are delightful and brilliantly written. I enjoy a good romantic suspense and loved the chemistry between Emily and Justin. I found their dynamic to be fun despite their lives being in danger and the secrets they were keeping. The depth of the characters kept me engaged from start to finish. The supporting characters personalities give balance to the story and compliment the main characters. There were times, I questioned motives and wondered if people really behave like this when no one is watching.

The setting for this book is perfect! I enjoyed the adventure of figuring out who did it and enjoyed how Emily’s love of horses was interwoven into story. I haven’t spent a lot of time around horses, and I find them to be amazing creatures. The story gave me an insight into them, and I feel like I learned a bit. I look forward to reading more from this author.

If you have a deep love for horses you are going to love “Cause for Elimination” by author Marla A. White. That unmistakable smell of hay and oiled saddle leather will hit you when you first pass through the stable doors. A lot of the scenes take place in this environment starting with chapter one where we’re brought into the chaos of finding the stable manager viciously murdered in one of the stalls.

Did the gray mare calmly chewing hay next to the dead body have anything to do with her death? Our main character, Emily Connors, believes the horse to be blameless and demands that a detective be sent out to look over the evidence.

As it turns out Detective Justin Butler agrees with Emily. The horse did not kill the woman and is thereby spared from being destroyed. Then who did kill her? As this murder mystery unfolds, we are thrust deeper into the world of stable hands, trainers, horse owners, riders, eventing competitions, drugs, addiction ... and secrets.

That old saying that “opposites attract” is certainly true as Emily and Justin find themselves falling in love. The way this is handled throughout “Cause for Elimination” is both humorous and tender.

I enjoyed “Cause for Elimination” as the characters are well developed and relatable. And it’s obvious that Marla A. White knows horses!

Competition can certainly be a killer! Set in southern California in the equestrian sport of Eventing, Emily arrives at the barn to find her boss dead in a stall. Not a great way to start the day, especially when she has to defend the innocent horse being blamed as the murderer to the handsome homicide detective, Justin. Emily and Justin team up to find the true killer, all the while she tries to hide her own secrets. This story has everything you’d want in a mystery—action, suspense, and an amazing cast sprinkled with quirky fun and danger. “Cause for Elimination” is a must-read page-turner.

“Cause For Elimination” is a murder mystery with a touch of romance based in the distinguished world of competitive horse show jumping. Equestrian Emily Conners arrives at the barn early one morning to discover renowned horse trainer Pamela Yates in a stall with her head bashed in. After some investigation by Detective Justin Butler, it is determined this was not a horse related accident but a gruesome murder. With a long list of motives and possible suspects Detective Butler and Ms. Conners set out to unravel the dark secrets and dirty deals behind Ms. Yates’ murder.

Author Marla White creates a compelling cast of characters in this exciting page turner. Emotions of jealousy, greed, lust, and revenge are spread throughout the pages to keep the reader engaged while peeling back layers in classic whodunit style. The depth of character development and scene building is incredible. At times I could envision the barn and felt like a part of their tight-knit horse show community. Wondering why they gossip so much about one subject and are hush-hush about others; in this world it appears everyone has a secret to protect and everyone also has a motive.

The chemistry between the main characters, Emily and Justin, is undeniable. The suspects are villainous and cunning. The banter can be adorable at one moment, then jaw dropping at others. Slowly, back stories are revealed between characters which tie together mysterious events, questionable pasts and treacherous lies. The depiction of rider Emily Conners’ struggle with painkiller dependency after a training injury is well written. You can feel the shame she suffers over who she has become and her need to mask the pain as she fights to continue the profession she loves.

Marla White has created the perfect backdrop for a romantic mystery. Being someone that grew up in the horse show world, I appreciate the knowledgeable way “Cause For Elimination” is brought to life. I love the inclusion of the quirky beliefs some barns partake in, such as psychic counseling for the horses. For me, this is a five-star read. I believe it would appease Rom-Com, Mystery, and Animal fans alike. I loved every page and hope to see more from this author in the future.

I love everything about this book! I only wish I could give it six stars. Marla White has expertly fashioned a mystery set in the horse world which focuses on a young woman, Emily, who works as a trainer. She is struggling mentally and physically to recover from a prior horrific jumping accident and the author treats the character's dependence on painkillers with informed compassion. I was hooked from the moment I started Chapter One and read Emily's thoughts to herself as she finds her boss murdered at their stable. The introduction of a handsome police detective and his snarky partner launch us right into the mystery, while also learning a great deal about the main players. The author cleverly weaves together each successive chapter building suspense throughout the book as Emily and Justin work overtime with her hilarious best friend and his sarcastic police detective partner to unravel the enigma of two murders at Emily's barn—and repeated efforts to harm several of the main players. The characters are wonderfully written—with intelligence, humor, and real world troubles. The dialogue is snappy and believable; I would love to meet any of them in real life. I could not stop laughing when the protagonist asked her love interest if he "noticed every time we get together at least one of us ends up requiring medical care?" In particular, my compliments to the author on her extensive horse knowledge which she threads skillfully into her story—and her marvelous descriptions of the eventing world with all the surface glamour and hard work that goes on behind the scenes at the barns. Ms. White revealed the details related to the central mystery and the "bad guy" deftly and cleverly, with just the right amount of information to help you solve the puzzle right at the end. I highly recommend this extremely engaging book to anyone looking for an action-packed equine adventure with a strong dollop of romance; it is impossible to put down. I really hope to see these characters in another mystery soon! In the meantime, I am off to order the author's latest book.

Despite suffering from chronic pain while recovering from a nasty riding accident, and going through an ugly, public divorce from her high-profile, unfaithful district attorney husband, equestrian Emily Conners’ life was slowly returning to normal only to have it turned upside down again when she discovered the battered corpse of her boss and friend in a barn stall.
Emily needed another complication in her life like she needed a kick in the tush from a horse. But the undeniable attraction between her and a hunky homicide detective was just that and much more as the two found themselves working together to bring a heartless killer to justice in a case where there appeared no shortage of suspects who had it out for her murdered friend.
The story moved at a clipped pace with a cast of flawed, but believable characters readers were invested in and who drove the plot. The characters evoked strong emotions in readers right from page one. This reader found herself wanting to hug Emily and Justin on one page and throttle them on the next.
Author Marla White penned a well-plotted tale that deftly wove ribbons of romance and a second chance at life and love into a taut murder plot driven by love, loss, trust, and the inner strength one must summon to face adversity. In addition to a compelling plot, Cause for Elimination took readers on a rollercoaster ride of emotions fueled by snappy dialog and an interesting locale. White’s experience in equestrian competition came through on every page and gave the story a ring of authenticity.
Cause for Elimination also took the pervasive issue of drug addiction head-on and forced the characters as well as readers to face the truth about the epidemic rather than allow them to look away.
Cause for Elimination has more than earned the five stars this reader has awarded it.

Cause For Elimination by Marla A. White tells the story of Emily Conners, a horse lover. Emily's boss, Pamela Yates, has been viciously murdered, and Emily is determined to prove it. Justin Butler is a detective that happens to be handsome and wealthy. He wants to solve the Pamela Yates case, but things aren't easy, and his interest in Emily isn't helping.

The characters in the story are wonderfully written and have the reader questioning their motives and wondering just what they might do next. Emily's character has depth and an engaging storyline that has you wondering about the things people get up to when you are not looking. The secondary characters are superb. Lottie, Emily's best friend, easily makes the story more light and fun. Dennis, Justin's colleague, and friend is the perfect voice of reason and usually brings Justin to his senses. The characters provide enough entertainment to keep you turning the pages.

The story's setting is set in such a way that it's a stunning backdrop for mystery and adventure. Emily's love for horses brings a lovely element to the story. Horse lovers will cheer and gasp at the interesting way horses are woven into the story. Those new to all things horses might find themselves curious about these magnificent animals. The story also has another case, besides Pamela Yates's murder, that brings friction and mayhem, which is interesting and keeps the reader glued to the story. Marla A. White has created a story that explores the lengths people will go to hide things. She's written a tale many readers will enjoy and remember after closing the book.

Cause for Elimination by Marla A. White is a wonderful and entertaining read and perfect for those who love a riveting murder mystery with a dash of romance.

This is a new author to me and I was more than pleasantly surprised.
A hard working woman trying to fight her demons - body and soul - desperately trying to find her place and the feeling of self worth and recognition in a very competitive, very closed off and sometimes toxic world of equestrian professionals. On top of that in eventing - the hardest and one of most dangerous competitive disciplines in equestrian sports. I can attest to the fact that the author knows what she's talking about because I was a part of this world for more than 30 years in practically the same spot as our heroine is - minus addiction - but after an injury that put me on crutches for several years I came very close to it so I realized that it was time to quit. Sorry for the personal insight, but I think it needed to be said so potential readers would know that they are getting a real thing and not just some 'run off the mill' story. Combined with excellent writing, murder/mystery/suspense, with many twists and turns, that will keep you on your toes, some banter, great character development - secondary characters included - and romance, all very well balanced, you can expect a read that will not disappoint. The only thing I've noticed and it bothered me was some level of emotional detachment in almost all aspects of this story - although realistic on surface there were moments that needed more drama, emotional insight and investment. Nevertheless it was hard to put down. Actually I think that some side characters deserve their own stories, Dennis and Dearg especially. I would love to read more about them. So a series maybe?

Our Review: Cause For Elimination offers the reader an insider’s take on the seamier side of event competition. It becomes clear, almost from page one, that it is not all the breathtaking jumps and glamourous partying. Training an animal three times your weight and size is exhaustive, back breaking, and heart-breaking. Under it all is a relationship of mutual love and trust between animal and rider—and well worth the ride.

Based on a scale of 1-5, Cause For Elimination merits a 5.

This book feels like a cozy mystery crossed with a thriller. The primary reason for this book toeing the line is because of the unstable protagonist with secrets to hide and the number of physical stumbles she ends up taking. In many books of this ilk, the investigator who is our leading lady is someone liked by many and cheerful for the most part; she also almost gets hurt but escapes just in time for the readers not to get details about her injuries.
I think I appreciated the structuring of the narrative enough to rate it the way I did.
As mentioned earlier, our leading lady works with horses and has a bad fall in her past, one that has her relying on the wrong kind of resources to prop her up. When her nasty boss turns up dead, she is both a suspect and someone who wants to help the unlikely official detective crack the case. They investigate each clue in a streamlined manner, making it possible for the readers to follow along with the reasoning and even jump to the right conclusion just before the reveal. This last part is something I have come to realise I admire.
I would recommend this to fans of the genre and of equestrian settings in books.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

This was a great story. I just love books that are centred around horses and this story did not disappoint. It was exciting, thrilling and fun. It was well written and flowed so well. It really kept my attention and my mind active trying to work out who did it. I loved the storyline it was so thrilling and there was never a dull moment. Who doesn't love a murder mystery in a stable right? Well, I am sure other horse fans will agree. I loved that round every corner there was always something to get excited about. Especially all the attempts on the main character's life. The characters were fantastic, and easy to like or dislike in some cases. I love characters that you love to hate. I loved how this story evolved around 3-day eventing. Very exciting times. I did become emotionally invested in this story's development and liked the light romance element. I definitely recommend reading this story as it is so engaging. I must say the end was brilliant I am sure you won't be disappointed.
So much praise goes out to the author and publishers for creating such a brilliant story. I look forward to reading more from this author.

This novel had me at “Good job, Em, step on your boss’s brains.” The character of Em, aka Emily Connors, is raw and flawed, yet vulnerable. It’s impossible not to root for her as she finds herself in many unexpected scenarios. The chemistry, or should I say snark, between her and Detective Justin Butler is undeniable. From the moment they join forces, it’s sheer fun along with intrigue. Nothing like murder to bring two people together.

Selfishly, I also adore the setting. I’ve lived in the neighborhood where the equestrian center is located, so got a thrill with every locale mentioned that spoke of home. And though I’m not an equestrian, I felt drawn into Emily’s world—squished brains and all. The characters had layers that called for unraveling (Enjoyed spending time with Dennis. Hoped Kate would be next on the murderer’s hit list).

Marla A. White knows how to spin a tale that’s both sharp-witted and all heart. As such, Cause for Elimination is captivating, engrossing, and downright funny.

4.5 Stars. This edge-of-your-seat mystery was an interesting read. The author has a great voice for spinning twists and turns into a suspenseful story. With so many possible suspects, the reader wonders who could be the killer and when they will strike again. The plot around the equestrian world was enjoyable, and the author is very knowledgeable in this ring. Justin was a great hero and the perfect person to step into Emily’s life. The banter between Justin, and his partner, Dennis was fun. Lottie was also a great and feisty secondary character. While the author did a good job on the sensitive subject of addiction, a mention should have been added of professional help to assist and maintain the character’s sobriety. But overall, this mystery was a page-turning read. Reviewed for Still Moments Magazine.

I bought this book because it is about the horse world. One of my all-time favorite authors is Dick Francis. But Francis wrote about racing not the equestrian world. That’s okay. I like horses and learned a little about this other horsey world. The main gist of the story is about a murder within that community and the detective who is trying to solve the crime with the aid of a pill-popping equestrian, Emily, who he’s falling in love with. At first, I puzzled over the heroine and her addiction. Ms. White was brave in writing such a flawed protagonist. But I must say she handled the touchy subject well. There were times I wanted to slap Emily upside the head, and maybe that shows I got into her character. I enjoyed the characters Dearg and Lottie as well.

From the riveting first sentence through the twists and turns to the satisfying conclusion I was quickly turning the pages of this romantic mystery. When Emily finds her boss Pamela Yates dead in a horse stall she couldn't have known what a roller coaster her life would become. The same could be said for handsome homicide detective, Justin Butler as he called to investigate the "death by horse" case. The attraction between the two is undeniable adding some romance and levity to the gruesome deaths. The setting of "the horse world" (which I have no knowledge of but the author excelled at) made for an interesting read, especially the barn and competition scenes. I also loved the empathetic, realistic way Emily's drug addiction was written into the plot. This book has it all-intrigue, romance, quirky characters and a well -written plot. Needless to say I highly recommend this horse themed mystery-it's a winner!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me an ARC of this book for my honest review
This is a must-read murder mystery; having it tied around the equestrian community a bonus! I could immediately tell that the author was an equestrian. Some authors try to tie in horses/riding to stories but do not use the correct lingo and language, but this story was spot on. I enjoyed the characters, and the few twists throughout the story. Having a romance tied into the story, was a nice distraction while trying to figure out who was the murderer. This is not my usual genre of choice, but thoroughly enjoyed.

A thrilling romantic suspense with a well-written murder mystery and a relatable main character named Emily. In the process of recovering from a horrific fall during a showjumping accident, Emily becomes addicted to painkillers. While struggling with addiction, dead bodies are piling up around her, and she falls for, Justin, the handsome homicide detective. With all of this wonderful action, and how real the characters feel, you can't help but get caught up in this story. I highly recommend for fans of romantic suspense.

I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic whodunit set in California’s equestrian world. I was attracted to the book from the moment I read the blurb and wasn’t disappointed. I highly recommend this book!

Ms. White, tells us a story that is steeped in mystery, murder, and love, amid the world of horse showing and training. Emily Connors an equestrian finds the body of her boss, & crosses paths with a local detective Justin Butler. Somehow, she must convince him that the horse didn’t kill Pam, but it isn’t an easy job. When the spark fly, between the two of them it complicates matters.

As a horse owner, I can say that Ms. White has done a fabulous job of combining horses with a murder/romance/mystery. I adored this story and can’t recommend it enough.

4.75/5 stars! I have not read that many equestrian-based books, so the premise of this book was exciting to me. This book was so much more than I expected. The characters were 3-dimensional and I loved Emily and her story. The mystery element was handled so cleverly and I was rushing to get to the end. Will be watching for more books by this author.

Emily Conners finds her boss Pamela Yeats dead in a stall. Emily is very upset to have found her friend and boss as she did. Emily and the detective that is assigned to the case work together to find Pamela’s killer.

Detective Justin Butler is very good at his job as he always gets the job done. He always finds his killer. Justin is having a hard time in the horse world getting someone to talk to him about the case. The equestrian world is a tight-knit group of people who like to stay to themselves. Justin turns to Emily for help in solving the case.

It doesn’t take Justin long to figure out that Emily is hiding something that he does not know, but whatever it is it is not making things look good for Emily in Pamela’s death.

The evidence is pointing to the horse as the killer but like Emily says anyone who knows anything about horses knows that the horse is innocent. Emily will do whatever it takes to prove the horse innocent.

Cause for Elimination drew me in from the summary. Once I read that summary I knew I had to read Cause for Elimination as I have been into TV shows with horses in them lately, especially horse whispers.

So therefore I have been on the lookout for books with horses in them. I will have to say that Cause for Elimination fit the bill. I love the world that the author created for Cause for Elimination even though it was more about solving a murder than horses.

Cause for Elimination kept me on the edge of my seat as I followed Emily and Justin on their search for justice for the horse. I will have to admit that when it was all said and done I was surprised by that ending that I did not see coming.

Cause for Elimination kept me locked in suspense as the story played out and kept me racing to the end to wonder who the killer was and why. I was spellbound by Cause for Elimination from beginning to end as the mystery unraveled.

I would highly recommend Cause for Elimination to all murder mystery fans! Grab your copy of Cause for Elimination today!
