Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word

Rate this book
Created in close collaboration with CD Projekt Red, this graphic novel collecting the comic series based on the hit video game takes you deeper into the ruthless underbelly of Night City and the moral code of the streets.

A family is torn apart following an assignment from one of Night City's largest gangs.

A new urban development proposal is being pushed through city council—a flagrant infraction on those safeguarded by the Valentinos gang—one to indulge the selfish and decadent lifestyles of the wealthy and displace the eldery in a historic housing block. They enlist the service of three cyberpunks to discreetly and strategically terminate the project. With a mole on the inside, a waitress who dishes out more than meals, a government official with a fetish—everyone has their secrets, and each one is about to get exposed.

Collects Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word #1-#4.

We almost got another good entry in this series of generally middling Dark Horse Cyberpunk 2077 books (Cullen Bunn's entry has been the only actually good one, so far).. but it fumbles the landing.

I do like a good revenge story, and this one's plot is paced pretty well, with nice little reveals along the way. But then a character we've been following gets unceremoniously offed, and I still don't really understand why - I mean why from a writer's perspective.. what does that move do for the story? It feels like a misfire.

Besides the earlier mentioned Bunn book, this has some of the best art, too.

(Thanks to Dark Horse Books for providing me with a review copy through Edelweiss)

Excellent book on the "haunting past" theme.

The meanest granny ever is back to Night City.
With a vengeance.
Family, trust and betrayal get at each other’s throat in this violent and resolutely dark story.

This is well-crafted cyberpunk gang stuff. Art/storytelling is pretty good. Colors are, too.

I've learnt to avoid anything CDProjektRed like the plague. It's a shame, too, for the initial Witcher comics were really bloody good, great even. Any cursory glance into the current state of CDPR regarding 'modern day' ideology would show you exactly where their head is at, and that has absolutely found its way into the comics. The second Witcher collection was not only clearly coming from a different mindset, they were also painfully middling to boot. It was for this reason that I avoided picking up the Cyberpunk 2077 oversized hardcover, instead reading this when I saw it sitting on the shelf at my local library. And all I can say is, thank fuck I didn't buy the hardcover collection. What you're getting here is basically John Wick, but if instead of Keanu Reeves going on his big revenge mission, he gets his elderly latina housemaid to do it for him. John Wick but with the Lemon Pledge lady from Family Guy. Sure, they try and give you a bargain basement explanation why an elderly truck stop waitress is secretly the BESTEST, BADDEST EVER! But it comes across about as authentic and believable as, well... (insert inane girlboss movie here). I like kick ass chicks kicking ass in comics. I really like it, in fact. What I don't like is this painfully transparent, tickbox drivel. It's a shame, too, for the art was pretty decent, and there was a solid story to be told before it went all senior senorita Sin City. Nope. 2/5

CYBERPUNK 2077: YOU HAVE MY WORD is one of the Cyberpunk 2077 spin-off fiction comics by Dark Horse comics. I've enjoyed several of these comics and had mixed feelings on others. Basically, they're short adventures set in Night City. If you aren't a big fan of the world of Mike Pondsmith and the later CD Projekt Red setting, then these are probably not for you. If you are, it's good to check on whether the spin off fiction has some value other than a cash grab.

The premise of this comic is a revenge story. A family living out of Night City in the Badlands, not quite Nomads but closer to them than the city folk, is one struggling to survive in their trailer park existence. All the family has secrets. One of them being a former Militech soldier with an exaggerated belief that the company cares about its veterans after they leave their service. Another being a former Edgerunner with a legendary reputation. A third being an up-and-coming Edgerunner who is supporting her family with the violent dangerous lifestyle.

Things go horribly wrong in Night City because, well, that's how life goes in the post-capitalist hellhole built on the Pacific Bay. One of them is killed and a mission of revenge begins that starts to unravel all the various secrets that all of them have been hiding. The people involved in the murders are also far closer to the family than any of them would have imagined.

I'm going to state this is probably the best of the Cyberpunk 2077 comics. I had my issues with Where's Johnny and Trauma Team, but this manages to capture most of the essence of the game as well as its complicated plot. So much of it that I kind of regret this is just a miniseries and wish it had been part of an ongoing storyline. However, I will give the comic the additional praise of saying that it sticks to the landing.

The best part of You Have My Word is the fact that the ending is earned. A lot of the comics end in tragedy or despair but this one is just an organic follow-up of the events that happened throughout the story. Plus, it fit the characters as we know them. When there's a twist, you may not see it coming you but understand how the persons involved came to the decisions that they made. Which is rarer than you think in these kinds of stories.

Indeed, the biggest failure of the comic is that it is only four issues and at the very least, this could have had two more issues of character development for what is genuinely interesting and well-written characters. I understand why they may have dialed down the size of the work but I think the comic deserved more space.

The art in the Cyberpunk 2077 comics is always beautiful with a mixture of gritty and colorful that makes them enjoyable to read. The action is subdued but visceral and the writing is excellent. If's not necessary to buy, there's no characters from the main game, but it's a nice piece of side content that I think people will enjoy.

Cyberpunk: 2077 - You Have My Word puede parecer a simple vista que termina de forma abrupta.

This story of pure vengeance hits all the right spots. The great dialogue and the gritty artwork complement the story of a mother taking revenge for her daughter's death. She leaves a trail of dead bodies in her wake, but that old saying still holds true: 'live by the sword, die by the sword.'

Young Oriona turns up dead because of a shady deal in Night City. Her mother Teresa leaves her cozy diner in the middle of nowhere to catch the ones responsible for her daughter's death. Though the city is a harsh place that has expanded since Teresa last saw it, she is determined to face anything it throws at her. If it opposes her, she will kick its teeth in.

Great art and great atmosphere. Everything fits the cyberpunk aesthetic which I love. Unfortunately, the writing is a bit of a mixed bag for me. Everything leading up to the end was great; a drama story about family, betrayal, vengeance, and trust. The ending however dropped the ball for me, as it felt like the authors wanted to make it as miserable as possible for all the characters involved. I get that a big theme of cyberpunk is that there's no such thing as a happy ending, but here it just feels forced.

Apart from the appearance of one location from the game and one minor side character, it's not connected to the in-game universe at all. Nice artwork at times but just like the Trauma Team and Big City Dreams comic, it doesn't add to the story at all.
So far, the Your Voice (downloadable) comic is the only one to add anything substantial. It's free for those who own the game so go read that instead.

Clear five out of five for me. Perhaps mainly because I am heavily biased towards anything Cyberpunk, but also because of the way this works like a granny version of John Wick in a sci-fi setting. It has a twist or two. It has amazing art. And it made me buy Cyberpunk 2077 for the third time (PS4, PC, and now PS5) - so I think it is really evocative enough to push the needle for me to make a purchase decision just so I can get to experience this world a little more for longer.

Note: I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Perfectly paced, great characters and neon laced artwork compliment the game's worldbuilding really well in this story. Tons of action and a few little twists kept my interest the whole time.

It's got great art work and it's a fairly okay story. Nothing happens that you wouldn't expect from the moment you meet the characters. You know who will make it and who will end up a red ink stain on the page. Everyone's miserable by the end so fairly standard cyberpunk 2077 experience.

Really liked this, the best of the Cyberpunk comics I've read so far.

The moral of the story is, of course, always be polite to the nice old lady behind the counter. Because she might just be more than she seems.

Moderately interesting story set in the cyberpunk 2077 universe, full of despair, hope, and betrayal. I did find it interesting that even after being lied to, people still clung on to the only thing they knew, even after having been betrayed.

A great addition to the CP2077 lore and series.

The main character is so well done, and I really connected with her and the rest of the characters.

There are references within the game to her on graffiti if you look for it.

Excellent!

Punchy, diverse, and painfully well-written, this fast-paced graphic novel holds nothing back and is a benchmark for those who like tragic science fiction. You have my word.
