A SHORT STORY - Prequel to the Sisterhood of Scandal series.
From USA Today Bestselling Author, Bronwen Evans comes her new Sisterhood of Scandal series. A group of ladies whose friendship is based upon ensuring they can take on the world dominated by their men folk. No male relative is going to choose their destinies.
Lord Julian Montague, the second son of the Marquess of Lorne has been Miss Serena Fancot’s best friend since childhood. When Julian starts talking about taking a wife, Serena is very aware they are no longer children.
Why does she suddenly notice just how lovely his dimples are and how tall and handsome he is? His clothes fit him like a tight glove and he has a body to rival Apollo. Suddenly, she can’t help but notice how the women in society’s ballrooms drool over him.
Worse still, he’s not once tried to kiss her, or hold her hand, or whispered words of love in her ear. Does he not see her as the love of his life? Has she left it too late to make Julian realize he is the only man she’d ever wish to marry? Has she left it too late to show him he’s the love of her life? That won’t do. But how do you make your best friend fall in love with you?

Miss Serena Forcot and Lord Julian Montague have been friends for as long as they can remember and for most of that time, Julian has been in love with her, something Serena seems completely oblivious to. Now that Julian has been elected into the House of Commons and is becoming noticed in Parliament, the Prime Minister, Lord Grenville has taken notice of him and hinted that he should marry. But there is only one woman who he would even consider and she has no idea he loves her. How can he get Serena to see him as a man and not just her friend? Desperate for help, he asks his sister, Lady Courtney for advice and soon has Serena’s complete attention.
It seems like things are finally going in the right direction, but a matchmaking Prime Minister and Serena’s impulsive nature may ruin their HEA before it even starts unless she can find a way to make things right and save the only man she will ever love.
What a fun introduction to a new series! Ms. Evans not only introduces the reader to all the members of the Sisterhood of Scandal, but she also manages to write a very delightful and fleshed-out romance that never feels rushed or lost in the setup of the series. This story has a lot of emotion, a bit of heartache, jealousy, betrayal, friends who save the day, steamyish love scenes, forgiveness, sacrifice, new beginnings, and a sweet HEA. This novella was a great start to a new series and I am happy to recommend it.

This novella begins the series of the ladies of the Sisterhood. A friends to lovers trope that almost ends in disaster. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
A Lady Never Concedes" by Bronwen Evans is a delightful historical romance that will sweep you off your feet and leave your heart aglow with its tender, heartwarming story of friendship and love.
The story revolves around Lord Julian Montague, the dashing second son of the Marquess of Lorne, and his lifelong friend, Miss Serena Fancot. Childhood friends, their bond has been unbreakable, but as Julian begins to contemplate taking a wife, Serena can't help but notice a shift in her feelings. Suddenly, Julian's dimples seem lovelier, his tall and handsome stature more alluring, and his presence in society's ballrooms a magnet for the adoring gazes of women.
As Serena grapples with these newfound emotions, she wonders why Julian has never made a move to kiss her or express his love. Is he blind to the fact that she might be the love of his life? Determined not to let her feelings go unnoticed, Serena embarks on a journey to show Julian the depth of her affection.
Evans has crafted a story that beautifully explores the complexities of friendship evolving into love. The chemistry between Serena and Julian is fantastic, and their journey from childhood friends to potential lovers is a heartfelt and emotional rollercoaster. Serena's determination to win Julian's heart is both endearing and empowering, and you can't help but root for her every step of the way.
"A Lady Never Concedes" is a heartwarming testament to the power of love and the enduring strength of friendship. It's a story that tugs at your heartstrings and leaves you with a warm and contented feeling. Bronwen Evans has masterfully captured the essence of a love that grows from familiarity and shared history.
I wholeheartedly recommend "A Lady Never Concedes" to all fans of historical romance. I received a free copy of this book via Bron's Bold Belles Review Team and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a freebie novella offered by the author and Booksprout and this is my freely given opinion.
I have quite liked the Bronwen Evans novella/novels I have read before and was happy to see a new series from her. This is a short novella with a friends to lover's trope that also acts as an introduction to other characters in this new series.
Serena and Julian have grown up together and are best friends. Julian has loved Serena for years, but never stepped beyond being her best friend, despite loving her as she had never indicated she thought of him as anything other than a friend, and she had always indicated she had no interest in marriage. She is a bold, forward thinking woman who favours the anti-slavery movement and more independence for women. Julian is a younger son of a nobleman who is coming into prominence in his own right as a politician, and who is being pushed by the head of his party to marry as that would give him more gravitas and a suitable marriage would push his ambitions forward.
Julian only wants Serena though, and she starts to see him as more than a friend when he is being pushed as a marriage prospect to other women. An added conundrum is Serena is also anonymously writing articles that could prove to be embarrassing to the government and Julian is being blamed for them.
This was a very fast paced sweet little love story about Julian and Serena, with a bit of heat, and served as an introduction to other members of the group that become the Sisterhood of Scandal and other characters that I expect will become the focus of other stories in the series. It was a nice little taster and I look forward to the first full book of the series, which I am starting immediately after finishing this.
“No one was perfect, but Serena was perfect for him.”
Field Memo: A Lady Never Concedes by Bronwen Evans Log Entry by Commander Aris Status: Praying there is more of Serena and Julian in other books of the same series. Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)
Immediate Debrief → This isn’t just friends to lovers. It’s BEST friends to lovers. But this isn’t just that either. It’s childhood best friends to lovers.
CHILDHOOD FRIENDS
*breathes*
As soon as I started reading the first chapter, I was page 1 or 2 (or both, according to my kindle) when I instantly rode the ship train. I love love a good bond of friendship aside from the ‘more than friends’ bond growing between characters. It really solidifies their connection without romance involved yet, and being in their POVs just make it so much sweeter and better. The pining, I mean. I adored their little pining, please.
I found the setting and side storylines to be fun and interesting too. I’ve been growing fond of similar historical settings as of late, so this was right up my alley. I liked the pacing, and nothing was too difficult to read as everything flows smoothly and on point.
I also really liked the sisterhood so far. I felt that this could be my start to Evans and to this series, and I could say it certainly did its part and made me want to dive into the others.
My only real complaint is that ALNC is TOO SHORT. I know it’s a 0.5 prequel and Serena and Julian’s story did conclude nicely without it feeling rushed or slow, but I enjoyed it so much that I needed more.
“No one was perfect, but Serena was perfect for him.” Oh Julian…
Protocol → Absolutely recommend it if you're looking for something short but sweet, engaging, and low-key spicy set in the early 1800s in England. MUCH LOVE.
This is a lovely little romance novella that suffers a little from being a series taster.
Serena and Julian are childhood friends who have now reached marriageable age. It is clear that both are in love with each other but there are a couple of obstacles in the way. The first is that Serena does not know it. She is absorbed in figuring out how she can make her mark on the world considering the limitations placed on women in society at that time. She has considered Julian her best friend for so long, she hasn't considered her feelings might have deepened or changed. It's not until the realisation that Julian, a rising politician, is being urged to marry for the sake of his career that it occurs to Serena that she doesn't want him to marry anyone else.
I mentioned the series taster issue. This novella, aside from the romance, talks a lot about politics. It also introduces you to, I think, seven or eight other female characters and several male characters belonging to the ongoing series. It was confusing for me and distracted me from enjoyment of the central romance. This said, I have a fairly clear idea on the next female protagonist, possibly two, in the series and vague indications of the characters of further protagonists.
I would say the novella succeeds in its purpose which is to introduce the series and give you a feeling of the characters we will meet and the tone of the series. All with a nice little romance to sweeten the taste.
I don't know whether to technically term this a short story or a novella, but this Regency Romance suffered from the faults typically seen in short-form romantic fiction. Namely, the form has no space to actually develop the romance or characters. This book has just ten chapters, and most chapters have just one scene. There's just not much to the story. The heroine and hero have known each other since they were children and have harbored deep affection for each other, but neither has revealed it to the other. At least this book doesn't suffer from the typical info-dump seen in brief stories like this, but that's probably the best thing I can say about it. I so dislike it when romances start with the couple already in love with each other. As a reader, I find it much more satisfying to watch the development of the romance or at least to be shown key scenes in their history so the author shows, not tells, us their story. But this brief story didn't have the real estate to do either. These two were potentially intriguing characters who likely deserved a longer story so that their tale could really be told. The book also had some very jarring modern phrases, like when the hero thought the heroine was living her dream. I've read other historical romances by this author and enjoyed them, but this was not one of those!
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
“A Lady Never Concedes” by Bronwen Evans is book one in her series Sisterhood of Scandal. This novella is about longtime friends Julian and Serena, Julian is the second son of a Marquess, a member of parliament who hopes for a career in politics. Serena is the daughter of a viscount, she’s savvy when it comes to politics and wants a voice for herself and all women, but she is impetuous and doesn’t consider the consequences to her actions. These two were meant for each other, they have a deep respectful friendship, and they love each. This sweet story follows Julian and Serena as Serena begins to see her best friend as a man worthy of marriage and Julian is trying to figure out how to reveal his love to Serena. Obviously these two aren’t communicating as well as they should. In this novella, Serena and her friends form a club, dubbing it The Sisterhood of Scandal, a safe forum for sharing ideas and learning from one another. There is one very steamy scene about halfway through. I enjoyed this novella, the first I have read by this author, it won’t be the last. The plot is not complicated, it’s not meant to be. This is about friendship, love, making amends, and forgiveness. I recommend this historical romance.
I received a free copy of this book via Bron's Bold Belles Review Team and am voluntarily leaving a review, my thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Lady Serena wants one thing: a voice in society. The problem is it's Regency times and women are forbidden a voice in society unless they write anonymously, as Serena does. Her articles as the mysterious V in the Times draw attention from the head of parliament, to the detriment of the man who intends to wed her, Julian Montague.
I found this story equal parts sweet and sexy. Julian has loved Serena all his life and is finally ready to make the leap and ask her to be his. However, the threat of scandal inevitably impedes his plans and he is forced to choose between the woman he's always loved and the career he's built his life around.
Julian and Serena are both highly likeable characters...until the story takes a turn. I felt that considering how outrageously in love with Serena Julien is his reaction to her mistake was harsh. It's understood from the onset that Julien understands her as no one else does and while I agree he would be disappointed in her actions, his words toward her come off as over-abrasive. Even when Serena makes mistakes, her good intentions make her sympathetic throughout the plot. I wish she hadn't been so willing to give up her voice in society, even for Julian.
The ending was satisfying. It didn't feel rushed at all.

This novella prequel introduces the Sisterhood of Scandal series. Miss Serena and Lord Julian have a difficult time agreeing to a goal of marriage with interference by Julian’s boss, Lord Grenville. Julian believes Serena will be the perfect wife for him because he loves her and she has the same political beliefs. Serena appreciates the friendship the two have had since childhood. She’s frustrated by the way society has repressed women giving voice to politics, so she helps start a group or club for women. The purpose is to express their opinions and invest their pin money with the help of Tiffany, her friend.
Women have many more freedoms than we did 200 years ago, but lately it feels like we’re regressing with ruling of the many by a few. No man should ever be able to control a woman’s body.
Serena and Julian have great chemistry together. Great steamy scene. He appreciated and supported her intelligence. Serena was a bit selfish about how she went about getting her information, but I’m glad her friends came to her rescue in the end.
I’m looking forward to (hopefully) many more books in this series.
I received a free copy of the book and I’m reviewing it voluntarily.
This was a great introduction to the ladies within the Sisterhood of Scandal. It is a quick and easy read centered around one such lady, Serena, as she founds the Sisterhood and gets herself into trouble with her impulsive eagerness to change the political landscape despite her gender. She has great plans for the future, and her love interest has a mutual respect for her and is supportive of her dreams.
The romance between Serena and Julian feels genuine as it's based in their extensive history, however I'm most interested in the underlying themes of growing female independence in the Regency era. I'm anxious to read more about the other ladies in the Sisterhood and see what changes they can make as a collective in future books.
I will say that the narrator voice switches between characters without always indicating from one paragraph to the next, so just be aware of that if your brain is like mine and gets a bit shaken by unexpected perspective changes. Other than that, this is a nice prequel to what I hope will continue to be a compelling series!.

Kind and handsome Julian, the second son of a marquess, has been quietly in love with his best friend Serena since childhood. Knowing Serena is firmly opposed to marriage — and unsure whether his feelings are returned — he bides his time. But when he is pressured to begin searching for a bride, bright but impulsive Serena realises her perfect match has been right in front of her all along, and she must make her feelings known before one of his many admirers claims him first.
This was a sweet romance and a very easy, fast-moving read. There is not a huge amount of detail or character development, despite the introduction of quite a few characters (presumably to set up the wider series), so a little more depth and colour could have helped establish the world and relationships more clearly. I also felt that, after a solid buildup rooted in their long friendship and obvious feelings, the “big reveal” between Julian and Serena was rushed and somewhat anticlimactic, and did not fully do justice to their bond. A bit more time and space devoted to this moment would have strengthened it.

But how do you make your best friend fall in love with you? This is a short story about Serena and Julian. This is the prequel to the sisterhood of scandal series. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
A beautiful story that is also an introduction to the Sisterhood of Scandels.
At the age of 5, Julian meets his future wife, but he doesn't realize it yet. Together with Serena, he grows into the man and woman they are today. He has never dared to reveal his feelings but she is the only one he wants to marry.
Serena thinks of him as her best friend until she notices other women watching him. The Prime Minister has plans for Julian that don't include Selena. He would like to see Julian married to a duke's daughter who will boost his career in politics. When Selena raises her voice she realizes that she has ruined all chances for Julian. Will he still be able to love her now?
And through this story, a secret club of women is born who speak up and do things that are prescribed for the men of the world. The 8 women who make up the secret club call themselves the Sisterhood of Scandels.
Nicely set up story where women don't let themselves be silenced in a world (and era) ruled by men.

A Lady Never Concedes : A Friends To Lovers Regency Romance.

Now that he is in Parliament, the Prime Minister, Lord Grenville, has become impressed with him and is eagerly wanting him to marry. Now she needs to figure out how to make her best friend fall in love with her. Before it is too late. But when Serena rushes to impress, she just might have ruined everything!
This is a fantastic short story about Serena and Julian. This is the prequel to the sisterhood of scandal series, and after reading this entertaining, and captivating story I can’t wait to start this new series.
I received an early copy and this is my honest review.
I really enjoyed this novella, which starts off the Sisterhood of Scandal series and introduces us to what I presume are the main female protagonists in the upcoming sequels. I really loved all the female friendships present in this book, whether it be cousins, sisters, close friends, or acquaintances. I would read the sequels just to get more of the wonderful female friendships we saw in this book!
The romance in this book is a lovely friends-to-lovers story, and their relationship feels genuine. I did find myself wishing this was a longer story and I would have enjoyed a bit more pining by both the hero and the heroine. Things were resolved a bit too quickly, but it works well for a novella! The spice level here was about a 2.5/5 - one explicit scene depicted on the page.
It looks like the next book is about Tiffany, which has me beyond excited, as she seemed so level-headed and kind. I will definitely add that book to my TBR!

Extremely well written, full of love, drama, intrigue, action, secrets, romance twists and turns. He loves me, he loves me not : she loves me, she loves me not. The hero -Julian is a young Lord who wants to marry Serena and has been in love with her since they were children. Serena has felt the same way but never sure when he will be ready for marriage. Julian is trying to give her time to make sure what he thinks she needs. Julian is working on a bill against slavery in the Parliament. He hopes this will improve his standings there. Serena also is helping by writing an article under an assumed name to help pass this bill. She reads some info on it on his desk and without thinking , she writes another article that gets him into trouble. Has action in the background with the other ladies. This book will keep you reading till the end and wanting more. Hope to read more about these characters in other books. Fantastic read. Would recommend to others.

Caught up in an era when women were frowned upon for having an opinion, Miss Serena Fancot finds it difficult to curb her enthusiasm for the bill that is being passed in parliament to end slavery. Her dearest friend, Lord Julian Montague, goes as far as he dares to make her dreams come true, but when she steps over the boundaries into total disregard for proprietary, he finds himself being torn between protecting his future aspirations or saving Serena from her own folly. When Serena finally comes to the place where she realizes that she is at risk of losing Julian, she steps up to the plate and takes responsibility for her actions, even at the risk of losing him altogether. Fortunately, the novel comes to a happy conclusion, even though it means that Serena has had her wings clipped. I received a copy of this enjoyable romance as a gift through BookSprout and this is my honest and voluntary review.
"impulsive, impetuous and often infuriating" - That's how Julian describes his Serena, and he loves her all the more for it. Friends since childhood, they have matured into a sweet adult love, but what will she do when there's another hen pecking around her c*ck whose family is more influential than Serena's?
This is quite an enjoyable novella with a cast of great characters. Julian and Serena are perfect for each other and I love that he actually listens to her. She has a voice and is not afraid to use it, even when it is unpopular for a lady to have a thought beyond marriage, babies and needlework. Her headstrong friends are a bunch to be rivaled with as well, ensuring the men who win their hearts will be worthy. I am going to enjoy reading more about this bunch of scandalous misses.

This is the story of Serena Fancot and Julian Montague. Serena and Julian have been friends since childhood, but it’s not until Julian decides it’s time to marry that she really starts to see him as more than just her best friend…….
This was the first story I read by this author but it was then called Miss Serena Wakes Up and was included with my KU version of the next book in this series. The addition of a ‘Cast’ at the start of this version was a great help. With several women forming the group of friends it was very helpful to identify their respective families until you get further into the series and more familiar with the different characters. I thought this to be a good scene setter for the Sisterhood of Scandal series and although a bit ‘wooden’ in places I’m glad I stuck with it as the next books in the series are much better 🐈⬛.

A Lady Never Concedes is a fantastic historical romance by Bronwen Evans. This is a very quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time. Ms. Evans has provided reads with a well-written book populated with fun and lovable characters. Serena has decided she does want to marry, but only if it's to her best friend Julian. Julian and Serena's story is loaded with drama, spice and humor. I enjoyed this book and look forward to my next book by Bronwen Evans. A Lady Never Concedes is part of the Sisterhood of Scandal Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.
I voluntarily read a complimentary copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A quick read. I enjoyed this story and am anxious to see where this series will go. Serena just wants her voice to be heard. Women don't have a voice in society, but Julian will always listen to her. Julian has been in love with her since they were children but knows she isn't quite ready. When Serena sees Julian dancing with another woman and hears that the Prime Minister has plans for him, she knows that she can't let him marry anyone else. When Serena inadvertently betrays Julian, she isn't sure if he will ever forgive her. So, to make things right, she makes a bargain to step aside and let Julian marry someone else to further his political career. Julian appreciates the gesture, but he isn't ready to let her go. What will she do?
This a fun short introduction to the Sisterhood of Scandal series. Many of the characters that will be seen in the series are introduced. I really enjoyed seeing how the sisterhood got started and am looking forward to see many of the women get their HEA.
I loved Julian and Serena as they are interesting characters. Their dynamic as a couple was fun and interesting – as they have a shared history and know each other well – warts and all. The story conflict was very fitting for the characters and the personalities they were given. I hope that we get to see more of Julian and Serena in the other books in the series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Julian and Serena have been best friends forever. Where Serena rushes into things, Julian is able to rein her in but when Serena goes behind his back, he might not be able to help this time. Julian has decided that he is ready to marry Serena but isn't sure if she is ready for his proposal. With the help of the newly formed Sisterhood of Scandal, Serena and Julian might find their happy ending. This is a cute beginning to the Sisterhood of Scandal series about several ladies who are trying to find a way to help themselves so that they don't have to rely on men. I can see the potential for lots of fun ahead for all the ladies and gentlemen involved.

Miss Serena Fancot and Lord Julian Montague are childhood friends and secretly in love with each other. What ensues is a charming novella about going after your dreams and desires before it is too late.
This is a prequal novella to the Sisterhood of Scandal series. The women in this group strategically step outside the gender norms of the era and pave their own path. I found several of the characters intriguing and I look forward to reading their stories.
Because of the length of this story there isn't enough time to really connect with the characters and see their relationship develop, but it gave me a good idea of the tone and characters that will evolve throughout the series.

If you’re looking for a cute best-friends to lovers historical romance this book definitely provides. It’s a short read but the characters have depth. Serena is opinionated, caring, and insightful. While also being thoughtless and impulsive in her actions. Julian is forgiving, intelligent, and determined. When the conflicts presents itself, Julian provides a solution that eclipses the choices made by Serena. There’s only one spicy scene and it’s well written and shows just how much chemistry the two main characters have. The books ends in a happily ever after. Overall, it’s a cute short read.

Serena and Julian have been best friends since they were children. She has no idea he’s in love with her. But after he starts talking about finding a wife, she’s determined he’ll marry no one but her. When a powerful man tries to keep them apart, will they risk everything to be together?
This prequel novella is so much fun. I loved Julian and Serena. He’s sweet and devoted, while she’s outgoing and impetuous. The story is smart and emotionally authentic. The books in the series can be read as stand-alones, but it’s definitely worth starting with this one and reading the books in order.
Thanks, Booksprout, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Julian is in love with Serena, but she doesn’t know it. They have been friends since childhood. When she discovers he is looking for a bride, she decides that bride must be her. Julian’s boss Lord Grenville agrees he should marry and has a bride in mind, not Serena. Will these two come to terms with their feelings, or will Julian give in to his boss’s wishes? This story is short and entertaining, and it does have a happy ending. It is the introduction to the Sisterhood of Scandal, which promises to be interesting reading.
