She’s a star student at her desk, but an even better one under mine.
Sakura Sato shows up to class early, completes all her homework, and has the best chance to make it out of this shitty town, if it isn't for me smacking a detention slip on her desk the morning of her eighteenth birthday.
It’s unprofessional, corrupt, cruel, but I don’t care. I’ve wanted her for too long.
And at Redwood Academy, rules are meant to bend. Teachers will turn a blind eye, if I make them. Students can be paid off with enough money. And Sakura, Redwood's valedictorian, will be mine.
No matter what it takes.
Detention is a steamy new adult romance and the fifth book in the Bad Boys of Redwood Academy series of standalones. This series does not have to be read in order!
With over seventy million online story views, Emilia Rose is a USA Today bestselling author of steamy paranormal and contemporary romance. She loves writing about dirty-talking bad boys and alpha-holes. She currently lives in a small town in Connecticut USA with her husband, two cats, and cute little yellow ducklings.
I had a kind of love/hate relationship with this book so it took me forever to finish it. The taboo naughty relationship between a dominant teacher and his submissive and barely legal student was hotter than a house on fire. It provided plenty of angst alongside the steam. So why was some weird and kind of immaturely executed mob nonsense wedged into the story? It added nothing, made the male main character seem wishy-washy and a little dumb, while adding pretty much nothing to the overall story. I would love to read a shorter, simpler story that focuses on the smut from this author because seriously those scenes were FIRE.
Emilia did not disappoint with this steaminess going on in here! Redwood Academy is back with another great one! Sakura is the good girl she doesn’t have any friends, she gets straight A’s, and finally when she turned 18. That’s when Callen Avery decides to make his move! And it all starts with that tiny Detention Slip. I would have wished for detention too if there was a Mr. Avery there as well. Grab your copy of this amazing age-gap, student-teacher duo now...you will not be disappointed!
Some books are unserious about serious issues and I judge the hell out of them.
Detention by Emilia Rose is not one of them.
In contrary moods, I've ripped romance novels to shreds for this sin of breaking my suspension of disbelief. I guess what worked here was the author's ability to make everything humourous in a surreal WTF? way in the third act. Sakura and the gift was lowkey hilarious, especially her wondering if Callan was a psychopath... NGL I thought he did do that, and my deranged brain was actually impressed by her man's violent gesture of undying devotion and love 😔😔😔
In a mood now where I appreciate the high-quality smut, give a pass on the skim and skip plot, and choose to be amused by the ridiculous, fever dream vibes of the final act.
Some reviewers wished this story just focused on Sakura and Callan's relationship and I can see why. The author could have definitely written something with more emotional depth. The first chapter opens on Callan getting ready for his work day, and his internal point of view about his wife, his life... it was interesting, and the author had planted seeds to develop that further, if she wanted to. Sakura and Callan's relationship was sweet outside of the dirty smut, and it could have been made for some pathos, as they both seemed like outsiders (Sakura didn't have a lot of friends as a studious person, and Callan was trapped in a loveless marriage).
I do think the whole trafficking side-plot... well I have not read the rest of the series, so I wonder how it was handled there. It came across as weekend hijinks or white-collar crime. There was no sinister weight to it, aside from Principal Vaughn's creepiness before the house of cards come crashing down.
5⭐️ 5🌶️ This is book 4 in the Redwood series and I absolutely loved it. Emilia always comes with the spiciest books and she did not disappoint with this book 🥵 The possessiveness on Callan was everything. I loved Sakura she was so sweet and innocent. I couldn’t get enough of this book. I can’t wait for book 5!! This whole series is a must read!!
The spicy scenes were good....although unrealistic at times. Def some things that didn't add up in the storyline. Both main characters were pretty annoying at times. And no build up at all, which I prefer. They were having sex by the 2nd chapter. The whole mob storyline was kinda eh. Overall not much to love about this book. The only thing I thought was kinda funny was how he totally corrupted Sakura, the sweet innocent valedictorian, into someone who didn't mind seeing decapitated heads and receiving a finger as a gift by the end of the book. She literally thought it was sweet that Callan killed all these people for her. 😂
He’s definitely not your typical high-school teacher🤤🧡Yummy, Hot, Drama, Suspense, Love, Lust, Hate… what a scary topic, and how disgusting there are people who have no qualms about the vile things they do to others…read to find out their Karma!! It was actually interesting to read from the Professor’s POV 📚 I very much enjoy the series 🔥💋🤓🔥
I went into Detention by Emilia Rose thinking, okay, student-teacher romance, probably a little edgy, maybe like Sweet Destruction by Heather Ashley. You know, forbidden love, a little dark, a little angsty.
What I got instead? A complete dumpster fire of a plot, a hero who is no hero at all, and a heroine who throws her entire life away for a man who doesn’t even deserve a second glance.
🚨 Let’s break this down:
• Insta-Love at Its Worst
• By Chapter 2, they’re already sleeping together. CHAPTER TWO. So tell me, why is this book 400 pages long? If it starts there, where is the tension? The build-up? The emotional depth? Spoiler: it doesn’t exist.
• This Ain’t a Love Story—It’s a Crime Spree
• You think you’re getting an age-gap romance? No. You’re getting murder, a severed head delivered as a gift, and a man who literally kills his own wife so he can be with a high schooler.
• He is MARRIED. And not just unhappily married—he has cheated before. This isn’t some "love that defies all odds" situation. This is just an unhinged man cheating, killing, and trying to knock up an 18-year-old.
• The Mob Angle Was Useless
• Why? Why was this here? What purpose did it serve except to make everything more ridiculous? Callan Avery is supposedly an executioner for the mob, but the way it’s written makes zero sense. Instead of adding depth, it just feels like a weak excuse to justify the nonstop murder spree.
• The Heroine Deserved Better (but Apparently Didn’t Think So)
• Sakura is supposed to be valedictorian. She’s bright, top of her class, and on the fast track to success.
• But instead of using any of that, she:
• Falls for this disaster of a man without a second thought.
• Actively tries to get pregnant because he wants it.
• Acts like she’ll keep the relationship hidden from her father until she finishes school. (Like that somehow makes it better??)
• And They Don’t Even Get a Proper HEA
• After all that murder and life-ruining decisions, you’d think at least there’d be a solid ending? Nope. The relationship is still under wraps, and they don’t even get to be together openly.
• WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS BOOK?
Final Thoughts
I don’t understand the four-star ratings on this. Have people never read a truly well-written dark romance? Do they not realize that just because something is "taboo" doesn’t mean it’s good?
This book was exhausting, frustrating, and a complete waste of time. It’s not romantic. It’s not sexy. It’s just bad.
If you’re looking for a real student-teacher romance, Sweet Destruction did it a thousand times better. Don’t waste your time on Detention. Zero stars if I could.
Detention is the 4th book in The Bad Boys of Redwood Academy series, and Emilia did not disappoint. This addition to The Bad Boys of Redwood Academy follows Callan’s and Sakura's story, a professor and his favorite student. Callan is Sakura's older teacher who can’t help but want 18-year-old Sakura to himself.
If you enjoy the age gap, student-teacher taboo romance, and all things spicy, this is the book for you. Sakura turns 18 when her favorite teacher, Mr. Avery, gives her detention. Being the good girl she is, she’s willing to do anything to make amends for her wrongs.
As with any novel in this series, the spice is spicing, and the plot is oh-so-sweet. Detention not only covered the dynamic plot we have seen in past books but added to it. The ability to see a single event from multiple perspectives while being introduced to new couples is Emilia's specialty. Callan, or Mr. Avery, was such a spicy character; between the past days of his secret life, a failing marriage, and a scandalous relationship with a student! What more could we ask for? I also adored Sakura's depth; however, she did come across as very insecure at some points in the novel. Although her insecurity was present, I feel that it helped build the suspense, as well as reinforcing Mr. Avery's secret life/job.
I absolutely loved this novel and can't wait to see whose perspective we get next.
YUM. YUM. YUM. YES. I am DYYIINGGGG. THIS WAS EVEN BETTER THAN I IMAGINED IT WOULD BE. I have been IN LOVVEEE with the Bad Boys of Redwood Academy series, and this was the PERFECT ending to reading all the books. Mr. Avery, or Callan, is just GLORIOUS. I have never wanted to be on my knees, or being bent over a desk more by a teacher. HE. IS. A. DAMN. GOD. Not to mention his relations to some of the town’s shady businesses… he can handle more than you think he can *wink*. Why am I jealous of a fictional character right now? Oh, and SAKURRAAA BAABBEEEE. WE LOVE HER. Get into your kinks GIRRLLL. There ain’t no shaming around here. Especially when you’re willing to do some very bad things for the man you love. RUB THOSE LEGS TOGETHER YOU LITTLE DEVIL.
I swear, every time I read about that damn principal in this series, I am hating him even more. But good lord. The fucking GASP I GASPED when SHIT WENT DOWN. Sakura is a BAD BITCH. And Callan got his revenge, oh boy DID HE EVER. From the rest of the series compared to the love story between Sakura and Callan, it was definitely different, as all the other books were, but goddamn this shit was cute. FUCKING. LOVED. EVERYTHING. ABOUT IT. I NEED SCIENCE PROJECT NOWWWWW.
Emilia does not disappoint with this steamy read! Redwood Academy is back and hotter than ever! Sakura is the good girl who has no friends, gets good grades, and finally turns 18. When her literature teacher wishes her a happy birthday, she can't stop thinking about him, and that's when the detention begins. Let's just say detention may be my new favorite class if Mr. Avery is around. Follow this amazing age-gap, student-teacher duo now... you may need a few glasses of water or a cold shower to finish!
This book 4 of The Bad boys of Redwood Academy that follows Callan's and Sakura's Story. Like all books done by Emilia Rose you have alot of very hot steamy scene to look forward to as well as the action paced Drama that comes with being part of Redwood Academy be it being a student or teacher. Callan is Sakura's older teacher so you can imagine a lot of sexy teachers and naughty student scenes. Loved how the characters was written and the dynamic of the story. Another great read for The Bad boys of Redwood Academy. Look forward to reading the next one in the series
You don't have to read these in order, but I would start with the first in the series because all of these interconnect. This is the forth POV in the Bad Boys of Redwood Academy series, and the plot in this book is happening at the same time as the first three books. I love how Emilia brilliantly weaves this story into the overall world plot. Lots of action, violence, and Hot AF Spice in this, just like the others. Check the list of triggers at the beginning. Can't wait for the next book, because I love this series.
First of all can I just say Callan aka mr Avery is not just your average teacher.
Detention was absolutely incredible, Emilia Rose is the Queen of Smut, erotica and filth. She’s my guilty pleasure author, if you haven’t signed up to her newsletter you need to. There’s always a sneak peak or a little naughty treat for you often. Who doesn’t love a teacher, student romance, only with this read there is some very dark twist and surprises along the way. So expect plenty of naughtiness and a teacher with a side job 😜
💌 — this was a good read of teacher x student. the beginning had lots of smut and i loved the way mr avery would dirty talk to sakura, let’s just say… it’s wet down there. however, the book is long but towards the middle and end very much focused on plot and smut was sort of forgotten. if you want a smut book then this book wouldn’t really be for you but the plot was great ngl! i enjoyed it.
tropes — age-gap, student x teacher, touch her you die, good girl FMC
Emilia does it again! If you enjoy an age gap, student teacher taboo romance and all things spicy read this. The spice is 🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Sakura turns 18 and gets detention from her favorite teacher Mr. Avery and ever the good girl that she is she'll do anything to make it up. I won't spoil it but know this book does not disappoint. If you've read anything else in the Redwood Academy world you know its 🥵🔥🥵🔥 and if you haven't you need to read them now! While it's Mr. Avery and Sakura's story we sees glimpses of our other Redwood favorites 😍 so just do yourself a favor and read it!!
Wow! This series keeps getting better and better. And each story is darker than the one before it. I have really enjoyed the interconnected nature of these books, but they still each have their own plot and their own surprises. I think this one might be the darkest and most taboo yet. But there was still sweetness and friendship and lots of steam. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series! Well done!
This series is great. I love that with each book the author gives more pieces to the Redwood puzzle. This one features Sakura and Callan in a spicy teacher-student romance, in the middle of all the intrigue and danger that’s plaguing the school and town.
You have to suspend all belief reading this book. It’s OTT. The H is married and he’s also shagging his 18 year old student. The whole book is very unbelievable but it was definitely a wild ride with plenty of cringy smut.
Liked this book a lot! You really should read the other books in the series, so you get the full picture of what’s happening. The plot was detailed, & the spice was spicing 😌😂.
