Gandrett can no longer hope that she has a dying chance to save the Prince of Ulfray nor the friend the Dragon King has taken from her. But she won’t give up—even if it means she has to travel to the forests of Ulfray first to help the Prince of Fae to wake his people.
Gandrett leaves behind the ruins of the future of Sives and embarks on an adventure of her own—where she gets more than she bargained for.
Venturing into Ulfray with brooding Nehelon is a challenge in itself, now that she has seen what lies beneath the harsh and cold shell he so very much likes to wear. But waking up the Fae is a whole different thing—especially when the path to lifting the curse is woven from secrets.
Gandrett can only pray to Vala, the goddess she no longer serves, that she look over her friends and brother until she can get out of Ulfray. And she needs to act fast. Because in Neredyn, forces are brewing that will change the course of history.

Angelina J. Steffort is a bestselling, award-winning Austrian novelist, best known for her Wings series and her Shattered Kingdom series. With over twenty YA and adult fantasy and paranormal romance books under her belt, Angelina is far from done with inventing and exploring new worlds. That might have something to do with her passion for following the narrative of new characters and getting surprised by the twists they spin on her stories. Angelina has multiple educational backgrounds including engineering, business, music, and acting. Currently, Angelina lives in Vienna, Austria, with her husband and her son.
This book wasn’t as action packed as the last two but it was wonderful for character growth. I’m sure there’s going to be a scene in the next book where Gordan has to explain what romantic feelings are to a few characters because the denial is real. I also have my suspicions about the true Fae king that I’m looking forward to seeing play out.
There were interludes to check in on the side characters but this was mostly Gandrett and Nehelon’s show. Mckenzie is throwing shoes at a Prince and clearly doing a great job making friends in her new court. Armand is putting out fires. Brax is alone for the first time ever. Addie is getting the five star torture experience with a Dragon King concierge (sorry about the pain and all but can I get you a bath and a blanket?).
But most importantly, Nehelon has feelings that had nothing to do with any potential romantic situations and it was glorious to see. Sometimes I wanted to hug him and sometimes I wanted to pull him in so I could smack the back of his head.
I received an ARC of this book which does not affect my review. I am very grateful and eagerly waiting for the next book.
I didn’t enjoy this as much as the previous books but it was still good. I liked Nehelon’s twin, King Valyn and Gordan. They were great additions to the series. Don’t hate me you all but I don’t like Nehelon as much as the majority of you seem to. 🤷🏻♀️ I don’t know what it is. Every once in a while I come across a main character that everyone adores and I just end up not caring for them much. I’d much rather have more McKenzie and her Prince, Addie, Armand and Brax which I’m extremely disappointed I didn’t get enough of.😒
4 stars for this one. Hopefully I’ll love the next one more.
I literally kept scolding the book. I was so into it at one point that I stopped and had to tell me husband about it just so I could talk to someone 😂
Gandrett doesn’t get what she deserves, but at the same time, we see that she will get so much more. The truth will come out and things will get better.
Following through with everyone’s stories was good and well written, but Gandrett and Nehelon’s journey into Ulfray had be staring at my book while I did every other task until I finished the book....is it summer 2021 yet? Ready for the next!
Thank you for ARC in exchange for this honest review. Like seriously, thank you, the end of the month was longer than I wanted to wait!
Wow! I could not put this book down!! This series has been phenomenal and I could not wait to get my hands on this next book. No one does character development like Steffort and it shows in this book. She gives you so much in 460 pages and STILL leaves you wanting more... Bring on book 4. I am ready for it. I devoured this book. I love Gandrett and Nehelon so much!!! This book was AMAZING! If you haven't started this series, you need to!!
Ahhhhh another amazing sequel in the Shattered Kingdoms series!! This book is my favourite in the series so far as the action just continued and the tension built! The main characters are quite distanced from one another in this book and we got to learn so much more about the world...the incredible world building continued. I really liked all the new character editions but don't want to say too much and spoil it. I loved finally learning more about the curse and all the tension and misunderstandings building to it!
I love Angelina Stefforts series because she’s such a quick writer and I don’t have to wait YEARS for sequels. Highly recommend for anyone who loves fantasy and/or YA fantasy but it’s a great book for all!
Thank you again Angelina Steffort for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK 4 Lost Towers this summer!!
"Shadow Rule" is the third installment in the “Shattered Kingdom” epic high fantasy series by Angelina J. Steffort, an original tale that follows Gandrett Brayton (a former acolyte in the Order of Vala, attuned to deprivation and training from a very young age, to reach maturity as a fighting warrior. Gandrett’s first assignment came in the form of Nehelon, the chancellor of the house of Breheran, who secured Gandrett’s help into freeing Joshua Breheran, the heir to the House, from his kidnappers. That initial assignment has evolved into a quest to fight the new awakened Dragon King, and, after the shocking events at the Midsummer Soltice Celebrations at Ackwood, the stakes are higher than ever. Gandrett and Nehelon leave in a quest to reach the Ulfray, the Fae realm to break the curse and gain an ally in the battle against the Dragon King. Meanwhile Brax Breheran is fighting the odds on his side, while her sister has been spirited away for her own safety, or so appears.
I could give you a wide summary of this wonderful book, the best in the series so far, but I won’t do that, because firstly, I have a great respect for Steffort’s and her unreachable gift for storytelling and secondly I also have a great respect for all readers and I could never, ever take away ever the slightest joy this book provides. But be assure, the story will give you everything you want and ever more than you would ever expect.
Angelina J. Steffort writing style is superb, tying the action with the descriptions of Neredyn into a captivating story, populated by original, multidimensional and fully fleshed out characters: Gandrett is a fabulous female hero, both strong and vulnerable, with a solid moral compass and a mind of her own, while Nehelon is the perfect counterpart for the quest, an old soul who has retain his own vulnerability, even when he tries to deny it; Brax and McKenzie are fully relatable, while Joshua is one of the most complex secondary characters even seen in fiction, specially now after his latest evolution, and then we have Addie, a wonderful, strong character, fighting against all odds to retain her humanity. Nehelon and Gandrett’s relationship will be tested as has never been before, and don’t let me start of Ulfray….. thus, I won’t.
The plot evolves nicely page by page, revealing unforeseen twists and ramifications, keeping the book always interesting and a real page-turner, and while the action maintains the reader on the edge of the seat, it is the fine humour and perfect chemistry between the characters what really makes the book exceptional. An epic story that lingers long after reading.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ are by far not enough, there is not enough ⭐ in the Milky Way to rate this series
Book 3 in a projected 7 book series, Shadow rule is the perfect example of a mid series novel. Questions are answered, secrets revealed just to have 10 more pop up. The book follows several different plot lines without feeling disjointed like some books that jump plot lines can suffer from. Armand is dealing with not only lordship but the fall out from the Shygon temple buried under the keep and the loss of Addie to the dragon king. McKenzie finds herself in a foreign land, sold off as a bride to the prince Taghi and feeling utterly alone. She tries to work through her sense of betrayal and her new circumstances the best way she can in the most entertaining fashion. The girl has spunk and I really enjoyed her chapters. Addie finds herself back in the north, a perpetual blood sacrifice, the reason for which she does not know but is determined to find out and survive. She shows such fortitude and silent strength it’s hard not to fall in love with her. Last but not least we have Gandrett and Nehelon on their way to the fae capital, neither of whom are ready for their journey to end. With betrayal revealed, secrets uncovered, and sacrifices made breaking the curse that holds the fae in eternal slumber and will test the threshold of pain for human and fae heart alike. Revelations about both Gandrett and Nehelon’s pasts, and the true nature of Gandrett’s role in breaking the curse further complicate and strain the delicate relationship they have forged. Things are not always what they seem and sometimes what’s right in front of you isn’t always easily seen. The primary plot of Shadow Rules does not disappoint and brings all the feels. Betrayal and sacrifice are the name of the game in Shadow Rule. With pacing that feels natural, and heartbreaking twists and turns Shadow Rule starts to set the pieces in place for the next book and the War to come. Just don’t expect an end to the angst and the desire to throttle our main characters because Shadow Rule brings it by the truckload.
This series continues to impress. So beautifully written, and fast paced. The third book concentrates on 3 of the main female characters. Well, at least that is the way I read it! Addie, Gandrett and McKenzie find themselves trapped in totally different situations by the rise of the Dragon King. They are, however, all fighting in their own ways to save their world and families. New characters are introduced, and more exciting plot twists keep this series intriguing! And of course, there is a map! Love maps!
Holy excitement! First off, this book was amazing. I loved seeing Nehelon and Gandrett together. Their chemistry is undeniable, even their bickering and fighting point to a love that will be so solid...as soon as they admit it.
Having all the Fae awake leads me to believe Nehelon is the "true king". I wonder if the current king knows?!
I am excited to see what the Lord's plan to do about the blue fire....what will happen to Joshua....uck I need book four!
The writing is, as always, impeccable. No dull moments, no fillers, and my favorite part- no complete rehash of the previous books! (Yea)
Every character is growing and evolving. The story takes place over multiple, well described scenes. Each character simultaneously going through their trials to, hopefully, end up together to complete their stories.
DNF- I really, really tried to like this series, but I have serious issues with it. First of all, there are far too many similarities with the Throne of Glass series, and I could list them all but spoilers. Do yourself a favor and go read that instead. It is far better in basically ever way. Second, all of these books could be 50-100 pages shorter and be better for it. There are far too many redundant reactions and thoughts from character in the same scene, to the point where it seriously slows down the action and flow. Too much time spent recalling things that the reader already knows, and the reader gains nothing from the recalling. Maybe people have worse memories than I do, but I just end up skim reading those parts to things that actually matter, which results in me not really reading the book much at all since there is so much of this style of narration. You may be asking why I got to the third installation before quitting this series. The author has the tendency to draw out information and storylines to get you to keep reading, but after reading over 1000 pages where really not a lot happens, I’ve just come to the conclusion that the author doesn’t know where this series is going either and I’m not sticking around to find out.
It's rare that I find a book that has multiple POV's where I'm not bored of a character's storyline and wishing it could hurry up so I can get to the good bits. Shadow Rule is not one of them - I am so invested in every character, even the villains.
We have Brax trying to rule over Ackwood following the death of his father, the disappearance of his brother and the fact that his sister now resides in a kingdom far from him. Armand at a loss following the kidnap of dear friend, Addie and the ever growing magical flames that are now sprouting in Eedwood and the revelation that Gandrett is responsible. Addie fighting for her very life against the Dragon King. Mckenzie trying to adjust to her new life with Taghi and then Gandrett and Nehelon. Out of everyone's storylines I loved theirs the most and I can safely say that I am Team Nehelon. This book has made me see him in a whole new light and I absolutely love him. I have my theories about Nehelon and Ulfray but perhaps they'll be answered in Lost Towers!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Another great story… looking forward to the next book One thing I especially enjoyed was that there wasn’t a battle or highly intense last 100 pages. Some things come together at the end and it makes you want to continue the series.
The angst in this book is 🤌. Honestly, Nehelon and G (I just call her that in my head) were the best part of this book. If not for them I would've given it 4 stars. There wasn't much of Armand and Brax, mostly just G, Nehelon, Addie and Mackenzie. Mackenzie's storyline is completely different from other but I'm looking forward to seeing more of her and Taghi. Addie is the only one who's suffering right now but I'm very intrigued by the Dragon King.
Firstly I took my time reading this one because I thought it was a trilogy and I wasn't ready for it to end so I wanted to savour it as much as I could! However at the 60% mark I was like this clearly is a longer series and I then sped through it because I know there's another book to follow!
I was screaming in frustration at Nehelon (I mean I think he was screaming in frustration at himself too) the most of the book to be honest but his reasons for being how he is are explained a lot more in this book and it makes me wonder about the prophecy because without spoilers its obvious to me who Gandrett loves.
I also loved McKenzie's chapters and was disappointed there wasn't more as I found myself really enjoying them, I'm looking forward to seeing how she is doing in the next book!
All in all another really good book in the series and I'm excited to read the next when it comes out.
I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my 100% honest review.
I cannot explain much about this book since it’s the third book in the Shattered Kingdom series. In this book we visit the fae part of the country as well as dealing with things that were left off in the last book.
I really enjoyed this but it might be my least favorite in the series, saying that this book is still just as great as the first two books. Learning more about the curse and how it gets lifted was interesting and very fun. I have a theory based on things that happened surrounding the curse though that may or may not happen. I still love all of these characters and overall the plot of this series. l can’t say specifically what parts I liked because of spoilers but I can assure you this book is great. I wish we would have seen a bit more from the characters we don’t get many POV’s of but I’m sure that is because more of there story will be in the next book.
I like where this series is going but I couldn’t guess where it’s going honestly but anyway it goes I’m more than excited. Also can it be summer so we can have Lost Towers which is book 4.
I am so in love with this series!!! Book three took that up another notch. The character and world building is beautiful and multilayered. The descriptions are detailed and evocative, drawing you into the world Angelina J. Steffort seems to create with ease. I can't wait to see what happens next for Gandrett and the other characters in this book. They feel so real!!!
Book three was just one wild adventure. The decisions and choices Gandrett must make and go through bring about a story you can't put down needing to know if she will succeed or fail. I can't wait for the next book.
I absolutely loved loved loved Shadow Rule. We finally got to travel to the kingdom of the Fae and wow, what a place it was. Personally, I prefer that she ends up with Nehelon and not his twin brother the Fae king. I still would recommend this series to anyone who loves adventure fantasy books.
◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦
The 3rd book begins with Addie being shackled into a cell by the Dragon King. Broken, bleeding, and dirty she is trying to remain alive, to make herself indispensable for the Dragon King so she can overthrow him or at least escape. On the other side of the world, Gandrett finally arrives at Lei’Vreah to Nehelon’s place, where Gandrett and he together are supposed to break the curse.
This book has been released on 28th February so I’m trying to stay spoiler-free but still giving you some details, otherwise, I can’t explain my feelings right now. I could legit scream! I haven’t seen this turn of events in this book, to be honest – I HAVEN’T expected this! While I usually try and talk about the book giving you more details, this time I need to be vague’ish as possible.
As we all know by now, the last book ended with Addie being kidnapped by the Dragon King, Brax is left all alone to take care of the castle, McKenzie is with the prince of Khila after her mother “sold” her to him for her own protection, Armand is battling his father and the fire of the dragon that is getting stronger by day under his castle, and Gandrett - she is following Nehelon to Lei’Vreah to help him break the curse so he can help her in return to bring down the Dragon King.
This time the book wasn’t action-packed like the last 2, but that didn’t take away from the excitement and the love I have for this story, on the contrary, I felt like this time the book took its time to concentrate on the aftermath actions from the 2nd book, even if the book might have felt slower at the time the pace it was just perfect because you could’ve seen what everyone was going through, their feelings the turmoil of the past events, the heartbreak but also the melting heart moments that really brought me on the brink of crying.
While Addie was suffering because of the King Dragon’s actions, Gandrett on the other hand had her heart and trust once again broken by the brooding fae male just so he can achieve his plan of reviving his cursed people, that for 400 years have been trapped into paintings along with his brother – the king who has been petrified on his throne. And even tho he had his reasons for everything he did and how he did it, there was more than one moment where I really wanted to punch him. He never lied to her, but he also never gave her the full truth, he twisted the answers, he told her what she wanted to hear and he kept her in the dark until everything just exploded on her face and for once in her life, Gandrett just let it all out: “Manipulative piece of shit Fae bastard” - finally she let it out, finally she spoke her mind and truly hated him, even if it was for a short period of time, her hate was pouring from her body like a waterfall.
While Brax is dealing with his castle and his mother, McKenzie on the other hand is finding new interesting things about the prince that “bought” her from his mom. I love the relationship between McKenzie and the prince they’re hilarious together and the banter between them is just perfect. I can’t wait to see more of their relationship in the next book because this, might be a series of 7 books and you can bet I’ll read each one of them!
I absolutely loved it. So many relationships with potential. And they mystery with the dragon kindn is Joshua really gone?? I think this one is my favorite book.
I had a major problem with this book, I didn't want it to end! I got totally enthralled in the book, I loved how the different chapters were dedicated to the various characters I have come to love, McKenzie, a sassy stubborn young woman, who is determined to cause as much havoc as possible, Addie, who is being used by an evil entity, Brax, who is thrust into a position he doesn't want, Armand, who will do everything he can to bring peace to the kingdom, Joshua, who is usurped, although hopefully, in the next book we find out what will or has happened to him. All these characters have wormed their way into my heart and I can't help feeling desperately sorry for them, whilst at the time, rooting for them. And let's not forget about Nehelon, who tugged at my heartstrings throughout. I must admit, Gandrett really frustrated me! Her life, from the time she is plucked from her family, has taught her to distrust and hate all those she thinks responsible. She is afraid of emotion, even though she is aware of her feelings for Nehelon, she cannot acknowledge them. There were times when I seriously wanted to shake her! That's how engrossed I was! There are a few new characters, who I can't wait to read more about. Well written, truly enthralling and captivating book and series. Buy it, read it, NOW!
Shadow Rule is the highly anticipated third book in the Shattered Kingdom series by Angelina J Steffort. This book took me out of the major book slump and book hangover I was in after finishing A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J Maas. Yes, it is that good ;)
With Shadow Rule it’s clear that Angelina J Steffort has completely mastered and perfected the art of making the hearts of the readers bleed. She’s totally in the same league as Sarah J Maas when it comes to making her readers suffer (I say that as a compliment). The plot in this book, like the other two in the series, consists of so many levels and depths. Even though we still get to follow Gandrett on her journey, the book follows several other lovable characters as well and each without the storyline ever being confusing or hard to follow.
And the plot twists! Just when I thought I had it all figured it out, I was sort of right but also not at all. There are so many unexpected turn of events and things which in hindsight are annoyingly obvious but impossible to figure out on beforehand.
Last but absolutely not least - the romance. Such a wonderful, angsty, teasing and sometimes infuriating romance I can’t even… it is just perfect and I need more asap. I can’t wait to get my hands on the fourth book!
***** Thank you Angelina J Steffort for the arc in exchange for an honest review <3 *****
I had been waiting to get my hands on this installment for a while, under the impression that this was the last of the series. Dang it! Halfway across is when I realized, naah, it couldn't be the final one, there was just so much unresolved. At that point, I had to step away from the book unwillingly to confirm the case on Goodreads. What is with the authors and their need to torment their readers beyond a trilogy?! I know, I know, I only have myself to blame, don't know how I missed there'd be five books earlier.
Anyhow, the book is flawless, a lot happened in the span of 470 or so pages for a lot of characters, while for many others, the story progressed very slowly or hardly at all even. Waiting (im)patiently for the next to come :D
I am so impressed by this book! It is even better than the second installment that I also enjoyed thoroughly. This book follows our heroine Gandrett as she travels with Nehelon to the faery lands Ulfray, while the rest of her friends and her brother have each been separated and are each dealing with their own issues. I think it's really difficult to keep interested in multiple point of views, but I found each of the subplots interesting, especially Addie and Mckenzie's. There were a lot of questions answered in this book, and some important issues resolved, but I still wish it was longer! I can't wait to read the next one and I'm so grateful Angelina is such a fast writer.
This is the third book in the Shattered Kingdom series. As we follow Gandrett and Nehelon and get to understand more about his past and motivations. Is there something more there between them or not?
I'm intrigued by what is happening with Mackenzie, enjoying that story as it unfolds.
I'm definitely a huge fan of this series. I want to keep reading! Who is going to win? The Dragon King or the new peeps who appear in the book. Lol trying to not spoil the fun but I really want to.
Like the synopsis says: Breaking the curse will break her heart. The new characters that come up are great additions as well.
Excited for book 4!
Thank you to the author for the e-ARC for my honest and voluntary review.
