What would happen if you got stuck with dreaded Bollywood villains like Gulshan Grover & Ranjeet and they rescue you from being harassed? What would your reaction be if Madhuri Dixit said I Am Sorry to you? As a four-year-old, in the verdant Doon Valley, Aruna would prance about the garden while the great sitar maestro Vilayat Khan would hold his music soirees. At 19, Aruna had Bollywood’s sexiest hero of the time, Sanjay Dutt, say I Love You to her. By the time she began working with hotels Aruna had stars from Bollywood and Hollywood orbiting her galaxy. Hotel Adventures with The Stars (HAWTS for short) is an absolutely delightful read. It is a book like no other, to be honest; and I’d so much fun reading it. There’s not a dull moment in the book and Aruna has done a wonderful job of staying away from all controversies and all other nonsense about celebrities (read gossip/rumours) to write about her encounters with Bollywood celebrities just the way they happened, leaving any/all judgements to her readers. I loved those chapters where she recounted her experiences with Sharmila Tagore, Shashi Kapoor, Khushwant Singh, Hrithik Roshan, Madhuri Dixit, Gulshan Grover and Ruskin Bond. Some of those incidents that she describes in the book touched my heart; some others had me in splits. She’s peppered the book with interesting anecdotes from her life so you get very interesting glimpses into the era of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Her language flows effortlessly across 235 or so pages of the book. Her writing style is upbeat and engaging and the way she switches between timelines and characters and events and places is simply brilliant. My first thoughts after I finished reading HAWTS were: this can’t be it; there has to be more. So, I guess, that’s a reason enough for Aruna to start thinking about a part 2 for this book. I’d strongly recommend it to all those of you who love memoirs.
I picked up Hotel Adventures with the Stars right on seeing the lovely cover page. I expected some gossip or some unsubstantiated trivia about the celebrities which is common in most of the star magazines.
Fortunately, I was taken by surprise by the content and the language of the book. It was dignified and was written with the sincerity and elan which the stars truly deserve. In this competitive world, it is not easy to reach such great heights. It is not definitely easy to remain grounded after touching the skies and being adored by millions across the globe.
I learnt that it is this humility which took the Stars to where they are now or rather made them stay there. Be it Jackie Shroff, Sharmila Tagore, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Gulshan Grover, Kapil Dev, or Kiran Bedi.
I am humbled to know the star behind the veil, the facade. I am hoping to take a leaf or two from their lives and inculcate it in my life.
Lastly, I thank the Author for writing this book with graciousness and without the extra zing just to give gossip mongers some bones to chew on.
A fun, clean-hearted, yet entertaining True Stories book!
They say, "Don't judge a book by its cover," but sometimes, that's exactly what happens. The moment I laid eyes on the cover of "Hotel Adventures with the Stars" by L. Aruna Dhir, I was drawn in by its charisma and charm. And I'm pleased to say that what lies between those covers is every bit as captivating as its exterior promises. In this unique book the author takes us on an extraordinary journey through her life, filled with unexpected encounters with some of the biggest names in Bollywood and beyond. But it's not just the glittering world of celebrities that makes this book shine; it's Aruna's storytelling prowess that truly makes it an amazing read. So, fasten your seatbelts as we dive into a world where the stars come down to Earth, and the hotel industry meets Hollywood and Bollywood in delightful, humorous, and heartwarming ways.
The book opens with a promise of intriguing tales, and it delivers on that promise. Aruna Dhir's writing style is engaging and conversational, making it easy for readers to connect with her experiences. She has a knack for storytelling, and each chapter unfolds like a new adventure, filled with humor, thrills, and heartwarming moments. One of the strengths of this memoir is its authenticity. Aruna shares not only the glamorous aspects of her interactions with stars but also the genuine emotions and human connections that developed during her encounters. Her anecdotes featuring Bollywood legends like Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, and Hrithik Roshan are sure to leave readers with a smile on their faces.
It's a lighthearted, entertaining read that combines humor, thrills, and genuine human connections. If you're a fan of Bollywood or simply enjoy stories of unexpected encounters with the rich and famous, this book is well worth your time. Aruna Dhir's storytelling talent shines brightly in this engaging memoir. Grab a Copy and you will not be disappointed at all.
You have to be of a certain age and having lived through a certain period in India spent in adulating, following, observing, worshipping and getting awed by the myriad stars from the silver screen and popular media to truly get all the nuances of this finely written memoir. Everyone will have a few favorites among the cluster of stars being brought to life through chapters in this book, and I had too. I especially loved the chapters on Ruskin Bond, Bollywood villains having a heart in real life(surprise!), Jackie Shroff, Khushwant Singh, Mira Nair and a few others. The writing makes these encounters from the writer's past come alive like you are watching a docu-drama on Netflix and makes you feel like a fly on the wall privy to some rare conversations. This book is a delightful and entertaining testament of India through eyes of the rich and famous while also underscoring how media and its consumption has changed through the decades. The things that we valued so much, star worship, the limited exposure to the 'stars' to the now 'stars are everywhere like a commodity' age. I kept reading the book on and off through café visits, home afternoon sit-outs and in buses and cabs, and it was all just so visual that I could immerse in each retelling so plentifully, if that's a word. The book also introduced me to the striking personality that Ms. L. Aruna Dhir is, I went and checked out her media appearances and her own YouTube channel and after that I could hear each chapter in her extremely impressive diction and command over each articulately strung together word or phrase. Looking forward to more of her works in future!
#bookhoarderreviews L Aruna Dhir is an International Hospitality Writer and has penned down this extremely interesting memoir consisting of her encounters with celebrities from varied fields.
L. Aruna has practically grown up with these celebrities and that reflects in her writing as well. The book isn't some scandalous revelations or gossip about the celebrities. It rather is their true demeanor which is very different from the roles that they portray in front of the camera.
Each meeting with the stars has a kind of back story from Aruna's life which was interesting to read. Her writing style is exceptionally witty. I love how she toys with the words making the book very engrossing. One can simply start reading any chapter randomly and enjoy the lucid flow.
Though the book has a lot of details with respect to the venue, the incident, how Aruna happened to be there and the conversations with the stars, it is all put up so well together, it feels like riveting short stories.
Putting together a memoir about celebrities, keeping it subtle and not a tittle-tattle because that's what is usually expected when we talk about celebrities is a huge responsibility and Aruna does an exceptional job at that.
If you like reading memoirs and would love to read about your favourite celebrities from bollywood, cricket, music world or even politics, this is your pick.

After having read and reviewed around 800 novels , one would certainly expect to categorise his reads on the basis of genre but then out of nowhere one encounters such entertaining pieces of writing once in a while that cant really be kept under any bracket .
The author of this novel talks about her chance meetings with some of the most celebrated stars of those times during her career in Hospitality sector. Her father demise in her childhood dint help her cause and the going was tough moving up the ladder.
She recalls her meeting with Sanjay Dutt the most eligible bachelor of those days , Gulshan Grover who was a fearsome villain but was a pure gentleman in real life. Same can be said about another grey character Ranjeet too. How Sharmila Tagore helped her immensely is also quite an interesting affair to witness. Besides that she has also encapsulated her adventures with stars like Hrithik Roshan , Madhuri Dixit , Kapil Dev , Kiran Bedi , Ruskin Bond just to name a few .
The tale is narrated in a very fascinating manner with equal dosage of humor ,delight and vivid imagery. The writer has maintained a very friendly tone and that helps the readers get completely engrossed in the writing. After completing this book ,one would certainly have an inclination towards carving a career in Hospitality sector 😛

Even though I may not count myself as a person heavily influenced by Bollywood, I have had my moments with this dream-merchant industry while I was a child, through the myriad movies and songs it has produced. As an adult, I am more selective about what I visually consume so the mainstream part of Bollywood is not cut out for me.
Nevertheless, my childhood adoration for Bollywood and its faint yet sweet memories came gushing back to my mind when I came across the book - Hotel Adventures with the Stars. A memoir in nature, L. Aruna Dhir shares her vast canopy knit with wonderful memories that take you through the dreamy boulevards of the Film Industry by virtue of her work in the Brand Management and Hospitality Communications sector. She recounts anecdotes where she talks about how she came across prominent personalities in her life like Kapil Dev, Jackie Shroff, Gulshan Grover, Ruskin Bond, Sanjay Dutt, Dimple Kapadia, and Madhuri Dixit to name a few.
What makes the book a breezy read is how human the stars appear in her words. Being a common woman, I am just another face amidst millions of faces in the world, just another number in the population statistics. I doubt my existence will ever be known to any of the stars I have come to love for their work and ethics. But, reading Aruna’s effortless and engrossing narrative, I see how human they are and how their lives are far removed from the high pedestal we put them on. The Author does not indulge in raunchy gossip. Her tales are rooted in truth and not mere hearsay.
Some of her anecdotes are laugh-out-loud funny and some of them are emotionally tender. Her interactions with the stars and her readers are dynamic in nature. I felt her jovial personality leaping up through the pages, so much so that it prompted me to look her up on the internet. Reading her book felt like seeing a stranger quickly turning into a close friend with whom you were whipping up interesting and heartful conversations. It was a delightful reading experience!

A very fine slice-of-life selection of Celebrity-based True Stories!
When it comes to lifestyle, there are two things that are high up on our aspiration scale. Hotels and the life led by Stars are looked at with awe by almost all of us.
The Baccarat chandelier lit corridors of five-star hotels, with their Carrara marble, priceless objets d’art, sprawling manicured gardens and emerald green pools, plushest of linen in opulent suites, the finest of produce from caviar to champagne, beckon us temptingly.
Then there are stars that shine on the terra firma, whose lives we are intrigued by. What are Madhuri Dixit and Hrithik Roshan like in real life? What makes legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Jackie Shroff such thorough gentlemen? Are iconic stars like Zohra Sehgal, Sharmila Tagore, Sonal Mansingh also such big-hearted folk? How is Sanjay Dutt to interact with when face to face? What about Bollywood villains like Gulshan Grover and Ranjeet?
Hotel Adventures with the Stars, the outstanding Memoir by L. Aruna Dhir, fills this gap admirably; bringing us closer to the stars we have normally seen from afar or across the big screen.
The one-of-its-kind collection of beautifully written true stories also makes the cold, clipped, steely world of hotels come alive as warm, thriving, interestingly throbbing places where segments of social, cultural history are written and great memories made!
Written in fine, lucid language with brilliant expressions and metaphor, Hotel Adventures with the Stars is a magnificent book that pleases and regales, that is both mind-tickling and heart-warming and it leaves you with a great after-taste of relish and reading recreation.
A must-read Memoir for all looking for a thoroughly entertaining Book! The Foreword by Ruskin Bond is the cherry on the cake!
I simply loved this book. The way the Author has narrated her meet ups with different stars and well-known personalities is just awesome. This book is filled with humor and the writing style is refined and polished.
The book is basically a memoir of L. Aruna Dhir in which she has described her encounters with insanely famous celebrities. How she got shocked or amused by their unexpected behaviors. Like, what would be your reaction when you get called 'Darling' by the very sexy Shashi Kapoor in public. What if you get a chance to spend an afternoon with Shubha Mudgal. What if you get a gift of handmade candles by the ravishing Dimple Kapadia, created by the Diva herself. What if you get a chance to have a conversation with the Bad Man Gulshan Grover. What if Sanjay Dutt writes 'love you too much' to you and you get a chance to sit and talk with him. All this is just a dream for many of us. All this sounds surreal, but believe me you can feel everything as its happening to you, in your journey with this book.
The narration of the book is so interesting that you'll find it hard to put it down. I finished it in one sitting. You'll get to know the other side of such great figures. Sometimes totally opposite from what we see on screen. Believe me the book is worth your time. You'll not regret reading it. In fact you will relish it.
You can't find so many encounters with different stars in just one book. I highly recommend it to you if you love movies. It's like you yourself are there. I want to thank the author for writing a memoir which is so hugely interesting. Although the language of the book is a bit tough in places but other than that I loved the book. I laughed at some places, got shocked and surprised at some places.
Book : HOTEL ADVENTURES WITH THE STARS! Author : L. Aruna Dhir
We all are very much familiar with the popular line - "The first impression is the last impression". The cover page of this Book gave me the true feeling of the line and brought it alive for me. The cover page is extremely attractive and eye-pleasing and the catchy title gives you a hint about the contents of the book.
Firstly I was curious because of the title, so i picked this book with a lot of anticipation. Well! I fell in love with this book just after reading the first few lines and it turned out to be such a great and wonderful read.
Oh, what a book! The Memoir manages to leave behind some great life lessons interwoven amidst L. Aruna Dhir's real life experiences with celebrities. The kind we only see on the big screen or from afar and can only aspire to get close to. I wish I too had the opportunity to spend quality time with all the stars who are described by the Author in her Memoir with such elan and flourish!!
If you buy just one book this year, make it this! It appears as if someone is sitting next to you and narrating these stories. Stories play out so realistically for the reader that it is almost like watching a movie. Every scene was running inside my mind.
The Book is so well-written from start to end. The language of the book is brilliant. The Author has described each scene in the book in detail and with accuracy. She has used interesting words that portray the scenes brilliantly. The Author has described everything perfectly. The author's writing skill was the obvious reason behind this.
The story-telling, the Stars who feature in the book, the language and the cinematic experience are reason enough for you to grab the book and give it a try.
Dhir’s unique experiences adorned with endearing details of Delhi’s iconic hotels are absolutely riveting. Who’s who of the country, from socialites to tycoons to film stars, drift in and out of the chapters, and somewhere you get a feeling of watching a gala event unfold.
The anecdotes cover a wide range. Some are downright funny, while others provide sharp insights.
Imagine Bollywood baddies rising above their silver-screen images and popular perceptions.
Picture a Bollywood Diva at the pinnacle of her career apologizing for something trivial or the grand debut of India’s beloved captain as a chef.
Dhir intertwines the magic of her formative years and the beauty of Doon Valley in the stories, tinting them with a nostalgic sheen that speaks to the 80s and 90s kids. The narrative touches upon peculiar circumstances and often tense situations a PR professional juggles.
Though the book underscores the megastars’ subtle idiosyncrasies, disguised dispositions and crowd-pleasing sensibilities, it has its heart in the right place.
Bold strokes of Dhir’s unique philosophy and perspective wrap up the tales, but not without providing enough fodder for thought. I especially enjoyed the chapters on Shabana Azmi, Sharmila Tagore, and Meera Nair. Dhir’s poetic and verbose writing style suits the starry memoirs to a T.
The book is divided into 27 sections, with each chapter focusing on a notable personality. The chapters can be read randomly and are independent of each other. I quite enjoyed relishing the book in small chunks.
A delectable concoction! The redolence the tales bring from the literary, music, movies, sports, art, and political worlds is hard to miss.
An entertaining, easy-breezy read, and as Master Storyteller, Mr. Bond sums it up, immensely readable.
Even while I wouldn't describe myself as a die-hard fan of Bollywood, the innumerable films and songs it produced during my formative years do bring back pleasant memories for me. My tastes have evolved as I've gotten older, and mainstream Bollywood no longer always suits my tastes.
But recently, I came across L. Aruna Dhir's book "Hotel Adventures with the Stars," which was published to acclaim and wide appreciation. In this Memoir, a seasoned Hotelier who has worked in brand management and hospitality communications takes readers on a voyage through the enchanting world of the rich and famous from films, sports, art, literature and Politics. Dhir's book has fascinating tales of her interactions with renowned people like Kapil Dev, Jackie Shroff, Gulshan Grover, Ruskin Bond, Sanjay Dutt, Dimple Kapadia, Madhuri Dixit.
You get a peek inside the life of numerous celebrities thanks to Hotel Adventures with the Stars. The author highlights the modest, giving, or gentle sides of characters you have only seen on the big screen. She has a lovely way of bringing you into the discussion and making you feel at home. The author's account of her own upbringing is just as entertaining. It's astonishing how many memories she had of when she was 4 years old. Actually, I think she's made herself a superstar in my eyes by writing this book!
The book cover and title are the primary things that readers see and have a significant influence in choosing whether or not to purchase the book, and the two of them do full credit to this Memoir as they are beautifully defined and drawn. Language used is simple and can be easily understood by everyone, but the deep meaning those words possess demands concentration.
“Hotel Adventures with the Stars” is an intricate memoir that enlightens us about the Bollywood fever with detailed characterization of each of the actors as a human. Encountering the stunning Madhuri Dixit, the 'class-apart' Dimple Kapadia, the charmingly down-to-earth Poonam Dhillon, Bollywood's Begum Sharmila Tagore, and an array of screen villains and heartthrobs such as Gulshan Grover, Hrithik Roshan, Shashi Kapoor, Sunny Deol, and Sanjay Dutt, she recounts the beauty of her experiences with these cinematic luminaries.
The author’s narrative skill enhances the reading in every way and you’ll feel indulged in all her endeavours. I must say, she is an amazing storyteller. Infusing her storytelling with a delightful blend of humor, thrills, and heartwarming moments, she keeps readers eagerly turning each page. Within the pages of this book, readers are treated to 27 captivating incidents or chapters that are not only engaging and fast-paced but also manage to tickle the funny bone.
In this memoir, you'll not only experience the glamour of celebrity encounters but also get a peek into the personal side of these famous figures. Aruna effortlessly captures the realness, warmth, and down-to-earth nature of these stars, making them relatable and lovable. It's a reminder that behind the fame, they're just like us, capable of forming authentic connections.
The illustration on the cover really makes my heart beat with extreme joy and it showers a feel of positivity. Her experience with Jackie Shroff, Kapil Dev and Khushwant Singh overwhelmed me with so much of curiosity and pleasure. I loved every nook and corner of the book and the writing style is literally a piece of beauty. I’m glad I picked up this memoir, and I would recommend it to anyone who is a Bollywood fan or looking for a humorous light read.
“Hotel Adventures with the Stars” by L. Aruna Dhir is a well-paced and amazingly presented Autobiography. The book is very well written and it is certainly one-of-a-kind. Going through the pages you will be mind blown if you are a fan of Bollywood and its biggest of Stars. The author has written with flair about her enviably interesting encounters with a clutch of celebrities. The real life interactions are charming and are very creatively crafted on paper, with candour and zest. What is remarkable is that as you read through the book you will feel the aura and the presence of your favourite actor.
The cover of the book is very beautifully done. I really appreciate the author for designing the cover in such an artful and comedic way. The stories are splendid and I recommend them highly to everyone.
The author Aruna is a professional in the international hospitality sector. During her tenure with Five Star hotels and in her personal life, she has met a lot of stars and famous personalities. In this book she has mentioned in detail the adventures she had when she came face to face with them. Her conversations with these Big Guns were also very different and not like the stereotypes that you may expect.
The book is also on the positive side as Aruna has very amazingly taken care that no controversies or gossips related to the celebrities ruined the enchanting association she had with them. Last but not the least I would like to say that this is a Must-read if you ever wonder how these famous celebrities - be it Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit or Ruskin Bond and Khushwant Singh or Kapil Dev and Kiran Bedi, and so many others - are like in real life because this book will clear all your doubts and misconceptions about them.
There is this overriding sense of enigma in the larger-than-life personas of our Stars that we all wish to get close to them, know them a little better and find out what really keeps them ticking!
Having seen them across the Silver Screen or read about them in newspapers and magazines, we want to know how they actually are in real life. How do they behave when the arc lights are turned off? What makes them laugh and what upsets them? Are they just like you and me?
Hotel Adventures with the Stars, through the Author’s real life accounts, provides a window into the authentic personalities that these Stars are, without their greasepaint and guards, in the absence of make-up and their attendants.
The Memoir is quite revelatory. How did Jackie Shroff behave with all the hotel staff? Is Ranjeet so different from how he has appeared in the movies? Was Tiger Pataudi such a simple man? Is Sharmila Tagore so grounded and down to earth in spite of her lineage? Is Gulshan Grover genuinely a thorough gentleman? Is Sunny Deol always reserved or can he be garrulous too? What was the grand dame of films and theatre – Zohra Sehgal’s secret that she revealed to the Author?
Hotel Adventures with the Stars allows us a peek into the lives and personalities of famous people who we have seen from afar and long to get close to. The Book does it with grace and class, without being sleazy or needlessly sensational.
The Author has done a great job in maintaining a fine balance and keeping her true accounts true and honest! And thrilling too!
L. Aruna Dhir’s Hotel Adventures with the Stars is a memoir like none other. It turns the spotlight on the unseen side of celebrities, away from the glamour and glitz of the camera lights. The author channels her experiences as a PR and communications Head with three internationally renowned hotels. She writes about her meetings with different stars in the course of her illustrious career and captures their quirks, their slice-of-life moments, and last but not least, their humane side. My favorite chapters are the author’s encounters with Jackie Shroff, Khushwant Singh, Ruskin Bond, and Sharmila Tagore. The aura she creates around the original ‘Bhidu’ of Bollywood, Jackie Shroff, made me want to be ‘Bhidufied’ myself! Khushwant Singh’s epitaph had me chuckling and tearing up at the same time. The chapter on Bond reaffirmed for me, that he is the original Bond, a true legend, and a fabulous human! Sharmilaji’s attempts to help the author in a time of personal crisis made me respect her even more. The author’s experiences make a career in hospitality very attractive and glamorous. Whether she is promoting a Teppanyaki grill or making a Hollywood shoot happen, you know she has the urge to think out-of-the-box and innovate. A high-profile job like this could not have been easy and to do it with such aplomb, speaks volumes about her leadership. The narrative is lucid, and the tone is witty and observant. The book is 235 pages and 27 chapters long, and you wish there were more stories and more celebrities; such is the power of storytelling. This is a book that makes you chuckle and wish you encountered a celebrity. Do pick up this delightful read!
Hotel Adventures with the Stars is a breathtaking record of L. Aruna Dhir's recollections of her meetings with the stars from diverse walks of life. The Author so beautifully paints an exhaustive portrayal of the character and personality traits of the big names that feature in the Book. The wonderful story-telling creates a pleasant sense of wistfulness, a dreamy longing in the readers with a wish that we were a part of these stories too.
It is extraordinarily remarkable to note the range of utterly famous people Aruna has met, both as a hotelier with internationally reputed Five Star hotels and during the course of her eclectically rich life. Her experiences with the amazing Ruskin Bond are especially endearing.
I was particularly entranced by how the Writer has painstakingly depicted the genuine characters of the famous folk - Jackie Shroff, Hrithik Roshan, Ustad Shujaat Husain Khan, Khushwant Singh, Shabana Azmi, Kapil Dev and so many more, we have adored and venerated across generations. The Book helps us understand that these VVIPs after all, are regular people in flesh and blood over and above their larger than life personas!
The Memoir is an elegantly composed, reminiscent, deliciously divulging yet non-salacious record of a very discerning individual. The writer brings to the reader tales of fascinating connections with the famous folk as well as profound bits of knowledge into the actual people they really are. Along the way, the writer manages to leave some endearing life lessons stemming from their attributes and life trajectories.
Hotel Adventures with the Stars is such a wholesome reading experience!
To be honest, I am not a person who follows bollywood or its celebrities too much, but love to watch a few of their movies a few times. This book is something that may make you jealous with the author and make you think why you were not the one leading the life like the author of this book. Hotel Adventures with the stars is a memoir by author L. Aruna Dhir that portrays different experiences with many of the famous celebrities of bollywood, poltics, cricket and more. Meeting the stars in real life is really a great experience and the author has so many such experiences that are more of a kind for their fans. Author has summed up all these experiences in the form of this autobiography spanning 27 chapters. To be honest, the experiences shared by the author are too funny, witty and enjoyable. If I name the celebrities, it is a long list but I liked Sunny Deol, Madhuri Dixit, Ranjeet and Sanjay Dutt in the book. The book has many foreword by famous celebrities and you can see the same on cover page as Ruskin Bond himself has reviewed it. The cover of the book seems cool with five clebrities posing with the Author Aruna Dhir. Language used in the book is simple and I really loved the narration style of the author. This Book took me a few days to complete but yes the chapters are so engaging that you won't be able to put it down without completing one of them. Description of events and characters/celebrities is mind blowing. I would really recommend this book to other readers who are fan of bollywood and would love to live a fan moment. Really a great work by author.
