Beautiful, single, headstrong, and smart, 34 years old Maya James is the senior recruiter for Stew Bax. Highly introverted, she’s very independent, loves hanging out with her family, and loyal to her inner circle. Men are not currently on her radar since the ones in her past have caused her to put a hold on any romantic endeavors. However, one deep, sexy baritone rattles her senses but she refuses to give him a second look, especially since he’s a janitor at her company. Will Maya’s snub attitude cause her to miss out on a potential good man and her good thang?
Handsome, debonair, single, and passionate, 33 years old Jabari Daniels works as the night-time janitor for Stew Bax. Grateful for his job that finances his livelihood, he’s self-sufficient, loves his family, and don’t play no games. One evening while doing his job, he is remarkably introduced to the love of his life, although she doesn’t know it yet and definitely don’t make it easy. However, her sully dismissal of him and her stank attitude toward him on several occasions has him thinking otherwise. Will Jabari get the message and back up from his pursual? Or will he take on the challenge and get the girl that his heart beats for?
In this funny, beautiful, peculiar, and romantic love story, judging people based off credentials, status, and material things is brought to the forefront. Maya and Jabari ride the waves as their boat rocks, shakes, and bounce throughout different storms in their lives. Read and see how they maneuver the ride and if their coasting is smooth sailing or a crash course. Learn if Maya and Jabari can find love in someone that’s on a different level opposite of themselves.
…..This is my first read from this writer and it was such a cute and sexy read…I have to get use to her jump around writing style…Some of the scenes abruptly changed…However, I loved how Jabari & Maya (his Cocoa) met at work, she sort of an Executive and he’s the night Janitor. But, please don’t judge a book by its cover….The couple had their ups and downs but they eventually got it right to get to their HEA.
This was a cute read. The main female character almost missed out on a good man by turning her nose at his job. Glad he was unfazed by her actions and knew she was going to be his. The love notes and poems were so cute and the proposal had me fighting all the tears! This was my first read from this author.
Maya and Jabari worked together, but Jabari was the janitor and Maya wasn't feeling that. After a run in with Jabari and her brother setting her straight, Maya changed her mind about Jabari. Jabari knew Maya was the one when he first laid eyes on her and he was determined to make her his. Their time together getting to know each other and falling in love was beautiful. The poems, the roses were just some of the ways Jabari expressed his love. Jabari was so good for Maya and I was mad she didn't realize it in the beginning. Maya wasn't sure Jabari was a fit for her but he showed her what real love looks like. This was a great read for me from this author, which is a new author to me!!
I enjoyed Maya and Jabari’s story. The fact that she was able to get his profession out of her mind, was beautiful to watch unfold. What he did for a living didn’t define who he was as a man. As long as he wasn’t using her for her paycheck, that was all that mattered. He was so romantic and was a book bae that I won’t soon forget.
Okay, I am glad I read the disclaimer before getting into this story because BABYYY I was like oh h**l naw Maya 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️. But I keep reading and after the way her brother Malcolm put her in her place about how she was judging Jabari without even getting to know him had me side eyeing her for sure 🤣🤷🏾♀️🤣. I so loved the way Jabari took her apology and then showed her how prejudging someone could almost cause you to miss out on true love. Maya and Jabari was amazing together, starting off as friends was needed so they could really see the person in-front of them and establish a foundation.
Baby the way Jabari handled seeing Maya hugging her ex 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾, boy I would have kicked everyone out and busted it wide open for him 🤣🤷🏾♀️🤣. I was again screaming Maya like don’t let your man leave, I’m so glad her cousin told her about herself. Now my favorite part is their trip to Florida and their Sex in the City experience. I had real tears coming down because if that isn’t one way to know if you’re meant for someone that surely do it 🤣🤣🤣.
Oh that proposal really almost had real tears coming, and let’s not forgetting the song Savon starting singing 🤣🤦🏾♀️🤣. That Stan guy gave my stalker vibes 😱 and the way he reacted proved it. What really is wrong in Jabari being a janitor? Like he can’t find love because of that 🤦🏾♀️. Hell the men with money are the worst sometimes, so I hated that being brought up within the story.
Now her best friend Netra was wrong for not telling the whole truth about her relationship between her and her baby daddy. Like it caused so much messiness to come to Mayas doorstep because she couldn’t be woman enough to handle the situation at hand like an adult. Sometimes you have to love from afar because Netra could have taken herself out of that situation if she wasn’t happy.
This was my first book by Riley Baxter, and I found it to be very descriptive in some parts which isn’t something I’m usually too fond of (ie describing the process of a character going into the bathroom and grabbing their toothbrush and putting toothpaste on it, running it under water, turning it on, and putting it in their mouth. Like girl you can just say the character brushed their teeth lol).
I really liked Jabari. I thought his profession would’ve been a major hindrance to him and Maya getting together but she got over it quickly. I didn’t really care for Maya too much, and I didn’t really understand why Jabari loved her so much. Like we read about all of the effort he put into courting Maya but there wasn’t really anything that showed her reciprocating that effort.
Jabari and Maya’s friends and family were hilarious (except for Netra). I wished we could’ve read about Maya meeting and hanging out with Briscoe and Savon since she made a terrible first impression with them.
One of the major cons of the book is that a few of the characters came off as [unintentionally] transphobic. There’s a transgendered woman character that makes an appearance, and I didn’t like how everyone misgendered her. Now her pronouns could’ve been he/him (I doubt it), but with the drama revolving around her and the fact no character asked her to confirm her pronouns, I feel like the other characters referred to her as he/him to be rude and disrespectful.
Aside from that, I liked this book. I’m willing to read another one by this author.
I was rocking with Jabari from chapter one all the way to the end. He didn't let the fact that he is a janitor define how good of a man he, he treated her with so much love 💕 grace, and patience, Maya pissed me off when she treated my man like that. I loved how her brother and sister/cousin checked her for her behavior. I don't know what that " String Bean Neck" ex-boyfriend was thinking 🤔 like sir you ain't about to come shake this foundation we have been building since day one " go back to the cave you have been living in " listen the cluster of pe**s slinging relationships chaos Nekta is in like girl what the Hell i feel like Maya could have been there for her friend a little bit more I know she didn't want to deal with the kind of situation but she is your best friend after all. I love the first meet up with both the mom's they hit it off real good it was so cute🤗🤗. Stan gave stalker vibe and I was glad that he ended up quitting. I really enjoyed this book so much 😘😘😘and I would recommend you read it
I just wanted to jump threw this book to choke Maya. She treated Jabari like he was beneath her. It took Malcolm to see his stand point from a man. I like how Jabari kept sending her flowers. I really thought Stan was going to do something to Maya. Netra mammy took the cake, I get she wanted her grandson to know his father but don't force it on your daughter. She was dead wrong for giving her baby daddy Maya's address. If Netra wants to get in that lifestyle that on her, but give her advice and then turn around and do what you want anyway. What did she what her advice for? What did Tobias come back for after being gone for three years Did he really think she was going to be single? It took Kena to speak up on her situation with Tobias to see she was messing up her relationship with Jabari. Maelyn didn't have any filter. Jabari got his woman.
So I saw this one on Tik Tok and definitely wanted to check it out. You would think by the cover this would be a sappy love story but it turned out to be so much more.
Although is gave me all the feels for a love story and showed what some women do without even realizing it. Judging someone from the outside and not what’s within.
Maya noticed Jabari the moment he walked in her office to collect the trash but she didn’t want to go there because he was a janitor and she worried about what others would think. A run in at the mall with him along with her brother takes her turn. Her brother noticed how stuck up and rude she was to him makes her realized her ways and she should be ashamed of herself because of it. Jabari avoids her until he couldn’t and she apologizes. From there, a beautiful love story begins.
This book was a great read and I definitely recommend it.

This is my first time reading this writers work. After reading the synopsis and starting chapter one I wasn’t sure how I was feeling about the book our the main character Maya . She certainly had me giving her the side eye. I have to admit it was Jabari and the plan he put in motion that made me keep reading. 😊. I’m so glad I did. The book was so much better than I expected. I won’t even talk about her crazy so called best friend Netra🤦🏽♀️ …oh and I have no words for Tobias the ex who seem to think that all he had to do was show up and all would be right with the world 🤨. However in the mist of all the craziness Jabari never looses his cool or does he stop his plan to make Maya his permanently.
Good read if you don’t get to ticked off with Maya 😂😊❤️
First book I read from this author and it wasn’t bad at all. Maya has an ideal man and it ain’t being with Jabari whose the janitor at her job. Jabari see his future in Maya but with two encounters of Maya dismissing him he starts to have second thoughts. After a lashes from her big brother Maya humble herself and begins a friendship that turn into something that both were searching for.
This book teaches us that a job isn’t what makes us worthy but our action. Jabari pursued Maya with pure intention knowing that what she lack he was able to provide and boy did he. Now the drama with Maya’s “best friend” was wild as hell and I’m glad Maya recognize that sometimes you gotta love ppl from afar.
This was a decent read and I like the idea of the story. I did think there was some questionable stuff regarding gay people. I'm not sure the author meant it to be problematic but it's written in a way that could be interpreted that way. See the lines below:
"downlow shit is disgusting" What does this mean? Does this character not like gay people because the only "disgusting" things are that her BD cheated, put her health at risk, and was deceiving her; all the same reasons it's disgusting if anybody cheats
"These outwardly straight men who wear suits and ties" This didn't make sense, especially in 2022. Gay men don't have a specific type of dress.
This the first time reading one of your works and it was beautiful. It was definitely a salute to Black Love. Thank you for lending your talent to the world of Black authorship. Keep writing Riley. I'm an Ohio girl too born and raised in Cincinnati. Although I have been living in KY for the last 21 years. It feels good to support a home girl. These was a great storyline and I loved it!!! It was a great break from my doctoral pursuit. Needed a reading break and this story was perfect.
I would rate this one a 3.5 stars if that was an option. Jabari and Maya’s story was unique, and strangely a little cray-cray! Maya’s friend Nedra and her sidekicks almost stole the shoe with all their drama. Jabari was a true roughneck-bae from start to finish while dealing with Maya’s wishy-washiness at times. In the end it was all gravy and that’s all that counts. Wish the ending could have been a bit more something, but I don’t know what so… oh, well.
Loved this story of Jabari and Maya finding true love It almost didn’t happen because Maya had a judgmental spirit But thankfully she got over herself and didn’t miss her blessing in being loved by Jabari a man she originally believed beneath her because of his profession Author Riley did a great job dealing with this real life issue so many people process and moved us along on how Maya realized and dealt with her issues and feelings Overall this was a very enjoyable read and one I highly recommend
Jabari did not come to play with his Cocoa. Maya James thought she was to good to fall for a janitor. Jabari Daniels was going to show her you can not judge a book by it's cover. Jabari definitely had BDE energy. He wanted Maya and he was going to get her by any means necessary. I love how they were friends before they become lovers. Netra needed someone to knock some sense into her with all that drama. She was toxic as heck. Loved Kena and Malcolm they kept Maya grounded and their Mama's were a whole nother story. I really enjoyed this book.
Jabari showed Maya that you can never judge a book by its cover!!!… I love how he woo’d her even after she snubbed her nose at him!!!…But Brother Malcom snapped her right back to reality and I loved it!!!… Nedra had me sick to my stomach all the way through the book!!!… Kena was a great friend and I love the way she read Maya too!!!…It is amazing to have true friends that will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear!!!… Jabari was such a gentleman Ana he stood on principle every single time!!!…
There's old saying don't judge a book by it cover, that's what Maya did to Jabari on their first and second interactions. I glad Malcolm, her brother lit into her about her behavior towards him. Maya's best friend Netra situation was whole mess up then some. I love seeing the poems follow by roses each time Jabari sent Maya them. It was a really cute, but humbling story.
A beautiful example of true love. I love Jabari’s personality and the fact that he was a MAN! No gam playing, no games, no secrets. I love that sh fell in love with a hard working man. Not the typical “I’m so rich and have so much money, it’s more than I can spend in a lifetime “. This was a breath of fresh air.The best friend’s storyline was too much and could have easily been left out. Zach l
Jabari and Maya great day in the morning, you cannot judge a book by its cover... This man was everything she needed and the trip to Miami and eating that food had me rolling ( my daughter was like what are you laughing at) I was couldn't stop I read it twice, her best friend that's a lost cause Great book getting to read another one. Hate I missed the discussion tonight
This a new author for me, but she now has a new fan! I loved how confident Jabari was because he knew from the jump that Maya would be his. Now Maya got on all my nerves judging a book by its cover. She was stuck on what he did for a living and not him as a person. But after her brother brought her back down to earth, she got it together. Jabari ended up showing her a love she never knew!! I loved this book!!
This was my 1st read from this author and I’m about to look for more of her books. This was a great love story and she showed how it doesn’t matter what your position is you can find happiness and true love.
She dealt with toxic Relationships and when to let go. I just really enjoyed reading her story
Sometimes the Love you’re looking for is right in front of you! This was such a sweet story. I’m so happy with how things ended and I loved me some Jabari. The love notes were such a sweet touch. Whew chiillleee that Netra was something else. I’ma need lil mama to get her whole life together
Maya judged Jabari by his occupation, but she quickly learned you can't judge a book by its cover, or in this case, it's job. Jabari knew he wanted Maya and did what he needed to do to get and keep her. This was my first read by this author but it won't be my last.
This man right here was EVERYTHING, to not only love someone but be able to show them with your actions is so much more! It doesn’t take much to express your love to someone on a regular, and he did it well!! This book was excellently written, I laughed out loud multiple times!! Perfection personified, thank you! I would love to see a followup about her sister/cousin!!
This one had me worried and about to stop reading a good bit of the way through. HOWEVER remembering that I’ve loved every one of this author’s books so far kept me going. Glad I did because it improved and kept in line with what I’ve enjoyed reading by Riley Baxter!
Where is Jabari I need him in my life. No words can describe how this man loved this woman. That cousin/sister told Maya right about not letting that good man go. Loved it.
Very beautiful and inspiring story cause he work as a janitor doesn’t make him a bad person he got job that hired him gave him something to look forward to stop judging and start loving one another if the feelings are mutual
You know what I love about a Riley Baxter book is not only will it be well written but I can see me in the characters, just a normal person working a normal job who happens to fall in love....Moon
Not at all what I was expecting! This book was a really great read! This book the right amount of drama, romance and sex. I love how the relationship played out, and the references to the old school songs made it even better.
