This book carries into it that sandy grit of Bara Magna from Greg’s serials. Here we see how Tuma and his traitor continue to work the Agori and Glatorian into a corner so that they may profit. This time, the Skrall have pointed the Bone Hunters at the village of Vulcanus and the doughty Glatorian must defend it. Greg must’ve had some classic Westerns in mind with the traps and the gunslinger honor. A decent book, but sad this is the only other novel we got for 2009.

There are way too many made up words in this book, but since I got it to understand contextually these words when my nephew starts talking at warp speed, I suppose that's a good thing. Ex.) the Bone Hunters eat stew made of thornax balls that the Glatorians think is disgusting--I don't suppose the Agori would like the taste either--but they wouldn't give it to their rock steeds because it's considered a delicacy. You can see where I might have needed a bit of a guide. And yes, my nephew really does talk like that.

Other than the made up words and cool armor, Bionicle is pretty standard fare. A small group of well trained gladiators--I am refraining from using the term Glatorian because it makes me feel silly--defend a village from a much larger attacking force even though the odds are against them. Fairly well written battle scenes and I liked that there was at least one female gladiator. Still, not nearly as good as the Percy Jackson books--the last books my nephew recommended to me--I hope he's not lowering his standards.

When a map indicating a planned Bone Hunter attack on Vulcanus is found, Raanu, leader of the village, starts building up defenses to protect his village. Knowing that the Agori can't defend themselves, Gresh travels Bara Magna in search of other Glatorian who are willing to assist in the defense. Meanwhile, Ackar and Gelu team up with exiled-Glatorian Malum and his army of Vorox to decreased the Bone Hunter numbers. Eventually, more Glatorian are recruited and, together, they fend of the Bone Hunter attack and emerge victorious.

I learned that teamwork is the key to success.
