Leo Blokhuis is de auteur van Grijsgedraaid (30.000 exemplaren verkocht) en Het Plaatjesboek. Tien jaar lang maakte hij samen met Jan Douwe Kroeske De 2 meter sessies. Hij maakt samen met Mart Smeets het radioprogramma For the Record en heeft een radioprogramma op KX Radio. Met Matthijs van Nieuwkerk presenteert hij het televisieprogramma Top 2000 a gogo. Samen schreven zij het Klein abc van de popmuziek.

In voorjaar 2009 stond hij, samen met Ricky Koole, in de theaters met de voorstelling Harmonium. In 2010 speelde hij, wederom samen met Ricky Koole, een theatervoorstelling, Laagland. In 2012 en 2013 tourde hij door Nederland met de theatervoorstelling The Band, Music From Big Pink To The Last Waltz.

In 2013 schreef hij met Electrifying Berlijn het geschenk voor de Week van het Luisterboek 2013, dat hij ook zelf insprak.

A lovely and thoroughly entertaining little book about the origins of a number of well-known hits. Blokhuis’s style is genuinely infectious: as you read about the obscure roots of a song, its themes of love and loss, the covers and arrangements, and the sometimes tragic lives of the artists involved, all you want to do is immediately start downloading and listening to every track mentioned.

My favourite nugget of trivia — and the book is full of them — was probably the meaning of ‘Midnight Special’. It turns out this was the name of a train that passed the prison where Leadbelly and others were held, around midnight. According to superstition, if a prisoner was caught in the bright beam of the train’s headlight, it meant he would soon be released or would manage to escape. Hence: “let the Midnight Special shine a light on me”.

The strongest song I discovered was the, until then shamefully unknown to me, ‘Lilac Wine’. Gorgeous stuff, with the same ominous undertone as when Jimmy Scott sings ‘Sycamore Tree’ in Twin Peaks. The standout version is Nina Simone’s, but the older interpretation by the original catwoman, Eartha Kitt, is well worth hearing too.

Mooie verhalen over die pop- en rocklassiekers. En dat er dan toch nog net een ander verhaal aan kleeft. Ieder verhaal stuurde mij weer naar Spotify of Youtube om even te luisteren hoe de ene zanger een nummer totaal verkracht had, terwijl Nina Simone - ja, natuurlijk zij - datzelde nummer rauw en hemels tegelijk had gemaakt.

Het boek verhuist nu van de wc naar de computer, en wordt van een doorleeswerk tot een inspirerend naslagwerk.
