Mental Slam: Writings for The Depressed and Anxious

Rate this book
Mental Slam is a collection of writings divided into five parts dealing with a variety of mental health fun. From bipolar and depression, to anxiety and insomnia, to loneliness and hopelessness, to recovery and contentment, as well as everything else in the cracks of each; they’re writings that dig into the suffering and humor caused by the attrition of how some navigate their minds as the earth rotates at the perfect distance from its star.
Some might call them poems, others might call them short stories, but simply put they’re little pieces of perspective to chip away at. Those pieces of perspective were gifted through things like travel and meditation; enduring a wildfire inside the skull while still clawing at the road or packing into a tube strapped to jet engines in hopes of becoming the best version of the self. The noise of the world teaches while the silence of home applies those teachings if one is aware of them, so these writings are nothing more than an attempt at learning as a human. They’re not lectures. They’re not wisdom or right answers. They’re simply trying.
First printed at a local southern California printing company as a D.I.Y. project, this is the second edition. If you find a little enjoyment in it, that’s good. If you think it sucks, use it as kindling or a table shim.

This piece from Kris was genuinely amazing. From start to finish and in each of the short stories and poems there’s a certain level of heart and spirit that I think can only be found when reading Kris Fox’s books. This one in particular focused mainly on mental battles and health but I finished the book feeling more understood about myself and feeling closer to Kris than I ever thought was possible. He shares a side of himself that is clear he never intended to but chose to in an attempt to reach people and help them through their struggles by sharing his own experiences. It’s hard having a beautiful soul in the ugly world we live in and Kris does an amazing work at communicating his own battles in hopes that someone else will understand and relate. For me, start to finish, I could do nothing but relate and share empathy for the kind soul that was brave enough to share. This book is truly something special, it probably isn’t for everyone but I hope that those that do choose to pursue this book finish it feeling more comfortable about themselves and their own struggles. Thank you again Kris you’ve truly done something special again.
