Rescued from deadly assailants by a young female cabbie who turns out to be a distant cousin to his former betrothed, the Earl of Stonegate feels obligated to shower her with finery as she vows to find his pursuers. Reissue.
I have to start by saying this is not a review, since I only read a few pages of this book. This is a warning so others don't make the same mistake I made. I have read my share of bodice rippers but prefer clean Regency romances. I thought all Zebra Regency books were clean and now I know better and will be more careful going forward. There are no spoilers since since this all happens within the first pages of the book but it will mention why this was not a clean read so be forewarned.
The book starts with the H in bed with his mistress. It's obvious that they just had intercourse and she wants more so he just lies back while she performs oral sex. He climaxes but, since the author wants to portray him as unfeeling, it's all physical and there are no emotions. Now, the language is not as explicit as I have read and it's, in fact, a bit funny how the author describes some anatomical parts but it's all pretty unsavory. I think part of it was the surprise to find that in a Zebra Regency book, but the biggest problem is that I don't want to read about the H's relationship with his mistresses, much less read a description of them having sexual relations (and as the introduction to the book and main character). To cap it all off, it seemed that she was his brother's mistress first. So many things I can't stand in romance novels. I have no idea why I continued to skim through these few pages, but I wish I hadn't and hope other won't have to.
