Jerry Kramer's Farewell to Football

Rate this book
Gerald Louis "Jerry" Kramer (born January 23, 1936, in Jordan, Montana) is a former professional football player, author and sports commentator, best remembered for his 11-year NFL career with the Green Bay Packers as an offensive lineman. As a 6'3", 250 pound right guard, Kramer was an integral part of the famous "Packer Sweep", a signature play in which both guards rapidly pull out from their normal positions and lead block for the running back going around the end. Kramer was an All-Pro five times, and a member of the NFL's 50th anniversary team in 1969, but surprisingly, even after appearing on the list of finalists ten times since becoming eligible, has not been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was rated #1 in NFL Network's Top 10 list of players not in the Hall of Fame.

This was a decent read detailing the last year of Jerry Kramer's playing career. In retrospect it is the first year of the long post Lombardi eclipse endured by the team. Kramer has an apology in the book to new coach Phil Bengston for the way the team played that season, but the truth is that Father Time was at work more than anything else. So the book is now in a sense a farewell to glory days of the
Packers so perhaps today, read in that context, it would merit more stars than when I read it in 1970.

The follow up book to Instant Replay by Jerry Kramer that deals with his decision to retire from football. A short book that deals with some of the fallout of Instant Replay, players reaction and Kramer's own dealing with a losing season after winning it all the year before. The changes after Vince Lombardi went to the Washington Redskins, the change in the locker room, and Kramer's own thoughts on what was wrong with his last year.

Read this 42 years ago when I was a high school football player. I don't remember much about it, other than I loved it. Thanks to Alan Stewart for the gift.

Farewell to Football by Jerry Kramer (World Publishing 1969)(Biography). This is the former Green Bay Packer’s star’s followup upon retirement to his brilliant biography about pro football which was entitled Instant Replay. My rating: 6/10, finished 1973.
