Hugo Maurice Julien Claus was een Vlaams schrijver. Hij was een veelzijdig kunstenaar: romancier, dichter, toneelschrijver, schilder en filmregisseur.
Toen hij opteerde voor euthanasie (legaal in België) veroorzaakte dit veel deining.

"Friday" is excellent theatre work by Claus, sober in style, but with more real drama than in his other play "Sugar". Core message p 101 (Jeanne):"what's happening with us, Georges? It's like they're pulling us with cords, by our intestines, pulling us from one to the other!"

Wow! This was quite a ride. This is a Belgian book (or actually a theather play) that was first published in 1969. The theme is incest leading to a jail sentence, sexual affairs outside the marriage and a child born out of wedlock - all this happening in the same family. The story is provocative and is basically asking us how far we can go in the sexual liberation; is having an affair with your own daughter accepted if she is the one seducing you? This combined with the story being told in the same was as the liturgy of a catholic mass makes this book quite intense!

Een spel tussen man, vrouw en buurman. De dochter zweeft ook ergens rond maar blijft in feite ongezien. Een simpel doch krachtig stuk toneel wat ik met plezier ooit eens zou willen aanschouwen in levenden lijven. Wat is Georges toch in vloeiende tweestrijd, hij zou begot nog durven een zwaard trekken om dan te struikelen en zichzelf te doorklieven!

Ook heb ik enkele maanden eerder de film variant bekeken van dit boek/toneelstuk. Deze verfilming is zeker de moeite waard doch werkt het einde - wat hier anders verloopt - hier beter en voelt meer gegrond aan. Maar uiteraard, beide de moeite waard.

3,5/5 Hi ha moments en què no entenc què collons està passant i em qüestiono la meva comprensió lectora del flamenc, però conforme vaig avançant me n'adono que efectivament he llegit bé i que està passant una cosa estranya de collons. Està entretingut, és una obra de teatre que té com a premissa la tornada a casa d'un home que ha passat una temporada a la presó per haver violat la seva filla.

I guess you have to understand this book in the time that it was written but it's amazing how much the attitude towards incest and cheating has changed in just about 40 years. In this theatrical play the man is just comming home from being in jail because he had sex with his daughter. In the mean time his wife had a child with another guy. And they're sitting in the same room talking about it like it's the most natural thing in life. Like it's not even a bad thing. Frankly I found it discusting.
You could say maybe they didn't know any better but it is brought up in the book and pointed out that they actually do know it's a wrong thing to do. It just happens so many times that it is concidered normal...
The tale and the characters are strongly written but the subject is just appauling.
