Robin feels so ordinary next to the new girl in her third-grade class. How can Robin impress Zoey who has pierced ears, wears tap shoes, and speaks French? She’s sure a cool girl like Zoey wouldn’t want to be her best friend. Robin’s excited when their teacher Miss Wing makes the girls partners for the butterfly project. But what if she blows her big chance at being best buddies?
A third-grade girl lies about needing eyeglasses to fit in with her new teacher and make friends with the bespectacled new girl in her class. The lesson feels too heavy-handed in this children's chapter book. I also wonder why the mother or grandfather never notice, or comment on, the glasses; the grandfather is with the girl at the yard sale when she buys the glasses, and the mother picks up the girl at school one day when she is wearing the glasses. All the children look goofy in the illustrations. Back matter explains the life cycle of butterflies.
Robin and Zoe are the main characters. They both had red high top sneakers and so did the teacher. Robin and Zoe are partners in taking care of a caterpillar in class. Their caterpillar transforms into a butterfly. When everybody's butterflies have transformed, they let them free into the garden.
"Butterfly Buddies" was a cute story about trying to fit in, which I think a lot of young kids could definitely relate to. I just didn't love the content as much as I wish I did. There were some parts that I just thought were too cheesy.
