I wouldn't be out of line to suggest most people, writers and readers, have come across a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. Any newspaper or magazine columnist, I am sure, has, from time to time, used a quote from Emerson to emphasize a point. After reading this collection, Emphatically Emerson by Frank Crocitto, I can certainly understand why. The quotes are all from Emerson's journals from the age of 17 to 71. While many may have heard of Emerson through his quotes, I would venture a fewer number actually know the details of his life. He was born in 1803 in Boston. His collected works include poems, essays and extensive journals. He was also the conscience of a nation. He spoke out against the US government's treatment of the Cherokee Nation, the aggression of the Mexican War and not surprisingly, was a firm opponent to slavery. Some have referred to Emerson as America's "Founding Thinker". His thinking would be of considerable use in these hyper partisan times. Sit back while reading the numerous quotes in this book. It will make one think and appreciate the wisdom of the words. There are many fine quotes in this collection, there is one that stands out for me personally: "All the mistakes I make arise from forsaking my own station and trying to see the object from another person's point of view." I highly recommend this book. It is time well spent.
