He's not made for relationships. Especially not the kind she wants... Mason Parker doesn't believe in love. Sure, he cares about people. His younger brother, for example. That's why he's bringing him all the way to an abandoned cabin in the mountains to straighten him out. But love? That's for fairytales. And people who haven't had the hope knocked out of them. People like his brand new Little-Miss-Sunshine neighbor with the golden hair and unwavering smile. Alaska Winter is a pure romantic. Her silver linings always outnumber the clouds. So when two hulking brothers move into the abandoned shack next door, she puts on a smile and introduces herself. And gets knocked back. That's okay. She'll just be neighborly from a distance. She won't notice the way Mason's muscles flex whenever he uses an axe, or the way his eyes are like flint whenever he looks at her. And he won't notice the way she plays with her dog in the snow when she's only wearing skimpy pajamas. Neighbors. That's all they'll be. What could possibly go wrong?
Carrie Elks is an international bestselling author of traditionally-published and self-published novels. Her books are sweet yet sexy contemporary small town romance stories. You can find her in all these places:
Maybe I shouldn't have read the 4th one first. I sort of expected a hallmark movie in a book. But it focuses a lot on Alaska's "abduction" when she was 8. First it was vague, and then once the 'reveal' whooshed through pretty early-- I spent the rest of the book wondering WHY it was ever even considered an abduction. Small town, family goes camping in the woods, kid goes missing... like where is the leap from kid wandered away and is lost in the woods- to someone, again in a tiny close knit community, stole her?? Especially when she appears on her own with a bump on her head all scraped up and muddy? Did they not take her to a doctor after?
Her parents, who show up later seem entitled/selfish. And her cousins. Man. They seemed nosey for the purpose of appearing in the book.
Mason and Alaska were fine. I guess. Alaska also joined team annoying near the climax, when her parents(after finding out Alaska was never kidnapped, just wandered away while they were camping) have Mason (who was 11 at the time) arrested. Again. What?! What shit ass cop arrests someone FIRST, with no answers, when the person was a child at the time? Generally they invite someone down for questioning first. Arresting means charges, and if they aren't ready to charge him, they've made it more difficult on themselves to do their job.
Do the cops in the shitty town just do whatever the wealthy parents want? How idyllic. Lucky they didn't spend the book harassing Ty and Mason then. And oh yay, the next book features Small town Incompetent/corrupt officer whatever.
Ahhh parents that would rather believe their child was abducted and molested rather than the obvious, left when they weren't looking and got lost.
I've gotten away from my point. Alaska spends 85% of the book saying she's strong/independent and not broken- but then decides she is broken(literally wails it) and is a weepy useless pile.
Mason has a mini emotional meltdown AFTER BEING ARRESTED FOR ABDUCTION. AGAIN BRO WHAT. And decides to end thing because he has emotional baggage. Then. Decides he CAN love people. Grand gestures by singing karaoke.
Full on cringe for me. But anyway. HFN ending. Next book is the weirdly attached overly aggressive cousin. And Officer Corrupt/Useless
It wasn't a rollercoaster, it was just irritating. Like the first plan was to make the weirdly aggressive PTA lady be the drama, and instead we took a left into a lake for drama about a not-abduction.
Honestly I'm not saying I'd rather read that, but someone here needs to learn to stay in their lane.
WHY WERE ALL THE SECONDARY CHARACTERS SO WEIRDLY AGGRESSIVE
ALSO(I'm sorry I can't let this go) Alaska was missing a total of 40 hours. HOW DID HER PARENTS ALREADY HAVE A REWARD POSTED? HOW? HOW IS THE FIRST STEP TO OFFER A REWARD. It doesn't make any sense. It's a fucking mountain town in West Virginia. Search and rescue? Hello? Something similar happened, where a teen got lost and you know what happened? People looked. They came from one state over to help because that's what they frigging do. Sofa King stupid.
Booktok got me with this one. I thought it would be a cute holiday contemporary romance, which it was, but it was just way too hallmark for my liking. Everything seemed to happen so fast? Like they had such intense feelings and emotions for one another after not even a week, which is fine. I’ve read books that have done this and it’s worked, but, I think, the issue here is that we didn’t really get much build up to any of it, so we’re more so told how strongly they feel, rather than having little moments that build up to it. Also, everyone in this town is so aggressive? Not violently, but just in the way they behave. So many strong personalities. It’s overwhelming. The ending made me cringe. Declarations of love made through karaoke make me so uncomfortable. Also, the abduction just seemed so ridiculous. It’s such a focal point and I get that that would be traumatic for any parent, but it wasn’t even an abduction? It seems like that was just thrown in there to add the emotional impact to the story and drive the plot along, but there really wasn’t much to it.
All in all, if this were fleshed out a bit more, I think I would’ve enjoyed it a bit more than I did.
I've heard so many good reviews and came expecting a good grumpy/sunshine story but what I got was some sort of victime blaming and a whole bunch of bs. The idea of the story is nice and I liked their dynamic till they got together but then all the issues started showing. Alaska has a complex of being seen as weak which everyone does for SOME reason and she brings it up in every fight she gets into which is extremely annoying and doesn't get fixed by the end of the story. She keeps fighting with Mason about him treating her like she's weak, I wouldn't say that he's OVER protective of her but he does keep worrying about her all the time, sometimes unnecessarily. I also wouldn't really call her a sunshine, she's just friendly and welcoming which she should be as a hotel owner.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
The climax of the story is that Mason got arrested because when he was 11 years old him and his father found her after she ran from home on their pouch sleeping and instead of calling the cops right away they let her sleep the night and dropped her off near a police station, which, he was an ELEVEN year old CHILD back then and his father made all the decisions but okay arrest him ig, that's not the main issue. The main issue is that during his stay in prison instead of mulling over how she ruined his life or how he probably won't find work in the future or how his brother will probably be harassed since everyone in town now thinks that Mason is a potential kidnapper she just got angry at him because he didn't say I love you back to her when she shouted it to him in front of everyone in prison... prioritys? And when he got out and tried to leave her for HER sake( somehow )everyone kept calling him an ass for leaving her WHEN SHE IS LITERALLY THE REASON HE WAS ARRESTED and THEN she says " yk that tattoo on you that dates the day you got out of foster care ? Well you might as well erase it because you're still stuck there " LIKE HOW EGOTISTICAL CAN YOU GET??? She and everyone else made him out to be the villain and made it like Alaska was the victim when in fact he was! Of course they got back together and she "forgave" him. The story frames it as if he's the villain and she has the kindness and the graciousness to forgive him for his mistakes and he keeps apologising and saying that he doesn't deserve her the whole story till the very end.
And don't even get me started on her parents or her cousins ,ugh, such annoying and nosy characters. They deserve their own review but I don't want to raise my blood pressure even more. Also the ending was so cliche and cringe it was honestly ridiculous.

This book has been in my kindle for over a year and I wish I’d read it sooner! The storyline and plot is relatively standard, but I’m a huge sucker for MMC that are guardians or have to take care of their brother or student or something - it’s like a single dad trope without him actually being a dad (win-win in my eyes 😂). Also, the writing in this book in and of itself was good. There were fun quips and good moments. Again, plot-wise wasn’t anything crazy, but overall a very enjoyable story. ❄️🎄
the couple is the classic sunshine/grumpy combination that we all know and love. their personalities are so different yet they don't clash at all. as they talked more, the couple realized that they knew each other briefly when they were younger. it was a quick cozy read!
I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntarily, honest review of it.
‘Memories of mistletoe’ is the fourth book in the ‘Winterville’ series. These stories are all centered around the small town Winterville where the residents celebrate Christmas with hot chocolate, Christmas songs, a Christmas musical and in many other ways. It’s here in this small town that the grandchildren of the founder of the town find love and happiness. Just like in the previous stories, you get both POV’s in this story.
In the previous stories we got to know Alaska as a sweet natured, quiet, friendly woman with a romantic heart. But also a woman scarred by an event that happened when she was a child. (She disappeared for a day and can’t remember what happened during those hours that she was gone.). That terrifying experience also caused the people around her to be very protective of her and treat her as a fragile, vulnerable little bird. Something that Alaska wasn’t very happy about. In this story Alaska showed everyone that she’s very strong, that the event hadn’t broken her, that she possessed great inner strength even when she looked at life with goodness, sunshine and kindness. Alaska was a great character.
I found Mason a more difficult character to connect with. He was emotional scarred by his stay as a child in foster care. He became a lawyer to serve the law but over the years he lost himself a bit in his work for powerful big corporations. Until the moment that he chose to give it all up. Now he’s unemployed and responsible for his 17 year old brother Tyler (or Ty as everyone calls him). So all this made Mason very closed off.
Although Alaska and Mason were polar opposites in many things (Alaska was affectionate, cheerful, positive, enthusiastic and friendly and Mason wasn’t any of those things. He was not social, silent and grumpy). They did have one thing in common, both cared deeply about the people close to them, they helped them in small and big ways without expecting anything in return. They both had a big heart. Only where Alaska showed it, Mason kept his hiding under grumpiness and distant behaviour. I found them a great couple, I loved how they took care of each other in their own way.
I’m so happy that we finally discovered what happened to Alaska as a child and the fact that Mason was connected to it, made their connection more special.
Mason’s younger brother Ty was a great secondary character (even though he sometimes acted like a real teenager but he was still friendly, sweet and respectful most of the time). He had a hard time after losing his father but luckily he had Mason (Alaska and the people of Winterville) to help him.
Another new secondary character that I really liked in this story was Mason’s childhood friend Preach, he was an interesting and fun character. I liked the fact he wasn’t afraid to tell Mason the truth when Mason was making bad decisions. He was a loyal friend. Some scenes with Preach and Mason really made me laugh out loud, Mason may have trouble with expressing his feelings for Alaska but he certainly made up for that with this one special scene. I’m still smiling just thinking about it!!
It was wonderful to see all the cousins again and their partners. So see how they were doing and to feel the deep love and loyalty between them all. They’re also a fun group of people and they love to tease each other.
As in the other stories, this story showed the good and the ‘bad’ sides of life in a small town. The people who live there are noisy, curious and they love to gossip but they are also friendly and supportive and there when you need help.
If you’re looking for some well written light but also emotional Christmas stories, try this series. There’s love, teasing, snow, hot chocolate and even some sex scenes in them.
I enjoyed this story and I’m looking forward to North’s story.
Well Carrie Elks you did it again. A phenomenal 5* read. This author captures and gives you emotional stories from start to finish. All her books are emotional perfections and this one is just the same. I felt like I could move to Winterville and just fit in. The characters interlink each story but could be read individually. Ty Mason and Alaska fit perfectly. I love how chirpy Alaska Winters is, it was such a contrast Mason’s grouchy attitude caused by stress of life worry and for his teenage brothers attitude and future. Ty had been a teenage terror causing his mom to tell his older half brother Mason to take him or see him in care, Mason couldn’t do that to his brother so took him to their dads old disused cabin away from distractions that had had a negative effect on Ty. Mason had a hard time showing emotions and out of fear from getting hurt like he had as a child ( no spoilers ) Alaska was his total opposite and posed emotion and kindness. Mason finds out he holds the key to Alaskas past and frame ensues. ( again no spoilers) They got their HEA ending and now I’d love to see if Preach and Marie and Ty and Eloise get their own stories and HEA’S.
This is the fourth book in the Winterville series. You can read it as a standalone but it is connected to the other books. Alaska is the youngest Winter and the one everyone protects. When she was 8 she went missing and returned days later dirty, with a bump on her head and no memories of what happened. Everyone assumed it was a botched kidnapping attempt. She is a 30 year old adult and is sick everyone treating her like she's weak and helpless. Mason moves into the cabin near her home. He's the grumpy to her sunshine. He's there to get his brother through high school by getting him away from the gangs and violence in the city. He's not there to make friends but he's drawn to Alaska only he doesn't believe he's good enough for her. Can't wait for book five. I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
More from Winterville the great place we all need to visit for the Christmas experience. This book concentrates on Alaska Winter’s story. I love all the Winter cousins. Whoever said opposites attract were definitely right in the case of Alaska and Mason. Alaska is kind, caring but also a little guarded after a terrible experience when she was young. Mason is a moody, grump of a man who try’s to hide his kind side. He rescues his young brother from the fate he had with social services when he was young and they move in next door to Alaska. A feel good read that makes you feel like visiting Winterville. I enjoyed the ups and downs of this emotional journey for Alaska and Mason. Also not forgetting Ty as he starts to grow up with the help of Mason.
I absolutely devoured this book ! I loved the romance between the two main characters.
Alaska is a character that I loved from the beginning. She's sweet, sunshiny, loves helping others and she's so strong.
When she meets her new neighbors, she falls hard for Mason ; a grumpy man with a dark past. He doesn't want anyone in his affair but can't seem to resist her.
I loved that Mason was taking care of his little brother. Their relationship grew so much through the book. I loved the Found Family it gave.
And now, I just want to read all the other books in this series.
Read this if you love :
✨ Small Town Romance; ✨ Grumpy x Sunshine ; ✨ Found Family; ✨ Single Dad ( he's taking care of his teenage brother ) ; ✨ Forced Proximity; ✨ Spicy.
Wow. I have loved everything about Winterville so far, and there’s nothing about this book that’s going to change that opinion. In fact, it’s only going to set it deeper in stone. There are some big, angsty emotions and a lot of baggage that needs to get unpacked to make this story happen. Alaska, Mason, and Ty don’t always handle it in the best ways possible, but those very human flaws make them all the more relatable. I loved seeing the way this unconventional little family fit into the picture of the already unconventional Winter clan. All of them, more than ready to fight with, and for, the best of “their” people. Now, if the next Winterville is going to be about the cousin I think it is, I’m desperate to get it into my hands so I can read it. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
I started this book assuming that this would be just a grumpy x sunshine trope but somehow an unsolved 'cold case' mystery was added. And I'm kind of here for it. I love how every single character went through their own kind of character development, and not just the main characters. I especially love how the relationship between Mason and Ty evolved. I absolutely cackled during the scene where Mason takes Ty to a formal fitting shop and Mason gives his younger brother dating advice, to which Ty responds: "How do you know what girls like? You're single. Taking dating advice from you would be like asking a dinosaur the best way to avoid a meteor shower."
It’s boring, there’s no connection between the MCs, her abduction story is told around this point which was also boring and actually wasn’t abduction - she just got lost.
I got second hand embarrassment from the FMC.
“This connection. Do you feel it?” Her gaze swept up to his. “There’s no connection….”
This👆🏻. There’s no connection dude. Stop forcing it.
You did it again Carrie. Alaska and Mason's story wow, just wow. They won my heart in just a couple of pages and they will always stay in my heart. Carrie you getting better and better and I'm you devoted fan for ever( not the bad way🤣in a good way)❤️
﹌﹌﹌ 3 stars! I don't feel like reviewing this in detail because I'm tired, but I do want to point out that the singing could have been eliminated entirely. There were many embarrassing moments in this story , but the love was genuine. Right now though, I am ready to sleep.
Every visit in the mythical town of Winterville leaves me feeling happy and joyful. The Winters clan has no shortage of family drama. In this series installment, it's wonderful to finally see Alaska making a romantic connection.
When Mason Parker returns to the place where he was once the happiest in his life, his plan to build a quiet life in a small town is upended. With his teenage brother in tow, he quickly learns that the isolated cabin he moves back to needs a lot of work. And by the way, he's got a neighbor that quickly becomes a distraction.
While the grumpy Mason faces a sunny Alaska, these opposites experience a delicious friction. Their connection is equally sweet and sexy, and they are made to contemplate the idea of being in love and making a future together.
I enjoyed every second with these two. I hope to see more of Ty when the broody North gets his comeuppance.
It was a cute book. I don’t really like the trope where the character says they’re incapable of love but I liked the story. Would read the rest of the series
It’s like the author thinks we are stupid or something because she writes the most boring plot twist. I liked the hero Mason just fine, he’s grumpy and hot and have a trouble past but he’s just plain coward and the heroine Alaska is okay but to damn understanding about her loser parents and caveman cousins.
If you want a cute Hallmark-style book to read around Christmas, this is a solid pick. But, wow, the logic in this book made no sense. (Spoiler!) Why does a guy get arrested for child abduction 20 years after the fact—with no proof—when he was only 11 at the time? In what world does that make sense?
And the whole “she’ll hate me if she finds out I was involved in her disappearance” plotline was just odd. It’s not like he kidnapped her—they took her in, gave her a bed, and returned her home. Then there’s the Ty situation. He didn’t act like a troubled kid at all—just a typical teenager with normal complaints.
Also, not enough hate for the mom, honestly. And don’t even get me started on Alaska’s parents—just gross.
So yeah, it’s a fun book to read if you want a break from holiday chaos, but you’ll definitely need to turn your brain off for this one.
Felt the urge to dnf multiple times Giving one more star since a least the MCs where actually harsh on themselves for being the dumbest people on earth A mess
I received an ARC for an honest review. I always enjoy reading books written by Carrie but I’ve got to say that this is my favourite in this series. Mason and Alaska is the ultimate grumpy/ sunshine read. Mason moves to Winterville with his younger brother, who he is a guardian for, after being away for a long time. He meets Alaska, his neighbour, and sparks fly, but not in the way you’d think! The story follows them and the realisation that they may already know each other but not in the best of circumstances. Alaska embraces the news but her family are quick to jump to conclusions which put Mason and Alaska’s relationship on a knifes edge. Great writing as always and I cannot wait to see what happens next in Winterville.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is Alaska and Masons story. Very cute and worthy installment of the series. I find the rating system very subjective so here's my thoughts. In the previous books, there's this big mystery of what happened to Alaska as a child when she disappeared. In this book, Mason just happens to have the answer and it was not really a big deal. The whole explanation was very anticlimactic. The second thing is North. I feel like the author is trying to portray him as an over protective Alpha for his cousins, but he's just coming off as violent. He greets the situation with his fists and doesn't even wait for an explanation or to find out what's going on. Very disappointing
The latest installment of the Winterville series. I must say, apart from book 1 being my favourite, this is my second favourite of the series. Mason Parker is a man of mystery. A man of few words. But underneath all of that there's a kind, considerate, passionate man, that just wants the best for his loved ones. In my opinion Mason is one of the strongest characters of this series, and he isn't a Winter. I liked this story. I liked that Alaska got her life on track, met Mason, and got a lot of answers to her past. A definite must read if you like contemporary romance.
Carrie Elks is a great author who always succeeds to draw me into her world building. She makes me fall in love with the small towns and the people who lives there and build their lives there with their friends and loved ones. Even though I’m definitely not into snow and ice and everything surrounding Winterville I still have the urge to go and experience it. And I get to do that in this amazing series.
I have been very intrigued by Alaska’s story and what happened when she disappeared and I loved the way that everything unraveled in this book. I loved how independent and strong Alaska was and that she was done being cuddled by her family. She knew what she wanted and didn’t let anyone stand in her way. She was also fiercely protective of everyone she knew, trusted and loved. Mason was also a great character who had a horrible childhood but fought his way through it and became a lawyer. But he had a conscience and quit because of some cases he couldn’t vouch for. He was a loner and a grump but he also loved fiercely and would do anything for those few he opened up to and loved. He was incredibly protective but also understood when to step aside and let Alaska do what she needed to to stand on her own two feet. Alaska and Mason was made for each other even though they are very different. He was the grump to her sunshine, the loner to her people person, her truth and her happiness.
I loved all the side characters like Mason’s brother Ty (the reason he moves to Winterville), Mason’s best friend Preach (so funny and a criminal) and all of Alaska’s cousins and their loved ones and friends. Winterville is getting big now.
I can’t wait to see how North Winter’s romance will happen in the next book because that one has been in the works for a long time now and there is definitely obstacles in the way.
I can definitely recommend this book if you love a big family, a brother who upends his life to help get his little brother out of trouble, a heroine searching for the truth of her disappearance and fighting for her independence and a very swoon worthy romance.
I got this book from Carrie Elks and this is my honest opinion and my voluntary review.
In ‘Memories of Mistletoe’ we read the story of Alaska and Mason. Alaska is a hardworking woman who has been running her families inn for the last few years. She is definitely a very positive person who enjoys helping people out. So when Mason and his little brother move into the cabin near her home in the mountains, Alaska really wants to make them feel welcome. But Mason just wants to stay away from people and make sure his little brother finishes High School. Mason is definitely a grump, and he isn’t looking for a distraction in the form of his neighbor.. Except she really is distracting him.
‘Memories of Mistletoe’ was a wonderful read I really enjoyed right from the start. Getting back to the setting of Winterville was really fun and I simple just couldn’t get enough of this small mountain town. The romance between Alaska and Mason was sweet and nice. And I just simple adored these two characters together.
Getting to know Alaska’s character was definitely one of my favorite things about this book. I had been reading little bits and pieces about her character in the previous books and I just had been very curious about her story. And she definitely ended up being one of my favorite characters. I loved how strong and independent she was. Alaska’s character was fun and cheery, and she just made me smile.
But Mason’s character was definitely fun to. Yes, he was a very grumpy guy. But after getting to know him throughout this book, you could easily understand why he was the way he was. And I just loved him. But apart from the romance, I really loved Mason and his little brother Ty’s storyline in this read. It was just so fun and touching to read about these two.
Although I really enjoyed ‘Memories of Mistletoe’, I must admit, above all it left me feeling even more excited about reading North’s story. North is the last Winter sibling we haven’t read about yet and I’m definitely counting the days till I can read his story.
If you’re looking for a fun, sweet snow filled read, ‘Memories of Mistletoe’ is definitely a book you should read. And although it’s part of a series, you can easily read it as a standalone.
