Renee Benning’s bond with her twin brother Chris had been unbreakable… until it wasn’t. Now, the pair must work past their differences if they are to inherit their late grandmother’s estate. But when they arrive at their estranged grandmother’s home, their troubled past will be the least of their worries.
Now I like this one very much. Its a stand out in this haunted series. I did have a good laugh though out. I can relate to how these characters felt. Nice job
Interesting premise - Woman finds a family she didn't know about until she's called to the reading of her grandmother's will. Family are odious, which is expected, and she inherits most of the bundle which makes them nuts - also expected. But the lengths to which they will go to boot her out are unexpected in this day and time. And her help comes from the most unexpected place - the afterlife. Pace is good; main character tingles a bit too much; still could use more editing (manor is sometimes replaced by manner). I'm glad I read it.
I enjoyed the story, though somewhat predictable. I've read a lot of books by this author and will continue to do so.
Renee gets a mysterious letter in the mail from a lawyer. He tells her to come to the home of her deceased grandmother. She can't imagine why, but Renee and her roommate, Mira take off from South Carolina and drive to Alabama.
Initially, the relatives treat Renee as a stranger, but once the will is read, they become evil...
Another pass with an editor would fix the typos, grammar and repeated sentences that occurred in some parts of the book.
I know other comments say they do not like too may words to a book, not me, I love reading long books. It makes the stories more interesting. Love all your books because you do not have any idea what comes next. I have also commented that I enjoy haunting books. I know things happen in real life to many people and do know our love ones are watching over us.
Awful. Simply awful. The writing was freshman high school level or worse. Grammar was terrible and jarring. Ending sentences with prepositions is off-putting to say the least. I kept thinking the editors must've been asleep on the job that day. The plot was Grade B Horror Movie, Saturday afternoon matinee-style. Nothing redeeming, insightful or entertaining in this book. Save yourself a load of time and skip it.
The heroine was just too headstrong and gullible for the circumstances. The current trend of trying to mainstream alternative life styles was front and center but the heroine being surprised at the judgement and hate that society gives those who attempts to be themselves and exist is naive and really just unrealistic
Not much on the haunting front. Story suffers from inconsistencies throughout. With characters being introduced then nothing more mentioned of them. What happened to Wilma? Jackie? Angelina? Maggie? And others. Like a lot of indie writers this one suffers from poor proofreading, editing and flow.
The story line was good, although predictable. The writing is what got me, it was very amateur. The characters were constantly calling each other by name. When you know someone most of your life, you don’t call them by name every time you address them. The reactions of the characters were off too; cracking jokes or flirting when hurt or in danger. Other than that, it’s an enjoyable, quick read.
I found the book to be slow in spots. However, I did find I needed to read more & find out what was going to happen next ! The ending was the best & very "riveting"!! I would read another one of her books.
Wonderfully written! Characters come to life as you read. Your emotions go from anger to happiness to scared to empathy. Loved to story from beginning to end.
While the story told in this book is okay, there are too many problems for me to give the book more than three stars.
First, early on in the book, the main character makes a couple statements, or more accurately thinks a couple thoughts, that I found to be quite politically charged. Maybe it was just me, or maybe it was my frame of mind when I read them. Regardless, they were completely unnecessary.
Second, there were quite a few editing issues. I can ignore a couple mistakes, especially when a book is free or only costs 99 cents. However, when the number reaches seven, eight, nine, or more, they become a distraction. It makes you wonder if anyone else read the book before it was published. All of the mistakes that I found were in the middle third of the book. (Note: The version that I read was contained in the "Horror in the Forest: A Riveting Haunted House Mystery Boxset".)
Finally, I found the main character's dialogue to be somewhat schmaltzy and tiresome.
Unfortunately, those issues flawed what was a good story that had some surprising twists.
