The fast-paced, action-packed career of the US Marshal’s rising star K9 team—Deputy Marshal Caitlyn Reed and her dog, Renegade—turns toward the tranquil rolling hills of Tennessee, when Caitlyn is assigned to oversee a racehorse barn recently seized by the Marshals Service. The job seems like vacation duty until several high-dollar horses go missing, shots are fired, and Renegade’s life hangs in the balance.
Caitlyn’s new husband, Sheriff Colt Branson, is back at home in Wyoming assimilating to his new role as a father and tending to the seemingly mundane duties of a small-town sheriff. But things heat up when local cattle mysteriously die, and a simple traffic stop turns deadly.
When Caitlyn chases the horse thieves into the seedy underbelly of the racing world, she tracks the roots of corruption all the way to the streets of New York City. In Moose Creek, Colt uncovers a surprising connection to Caitlyn’s case. The question remains, will they all survive the unravelling of this twisted conspiracy, or will darkness ultimately prevail?

This is to the first book of the Tin Star series I have read. The story splits into three separate tales with some interweaving and, as a result, more than one solution before the combined ending. The characters are well-drawn and quite believable. The different locations take the reader into the world of horseracing, big city venues and western country experiences. There is plenty of action and, while I'm sure readers of the series are familiar with each characters backstory, the author brings significant history into this book on a way that makes it an easy standalone read. I look forward to reading more stories from this author. I received an ARC and this is !y honest appraisal of this novel.
Action packed, multi-faceted plot with Colt and Caitlyn each dealing with their own criminal case in different states. To work her way back to her job full power, she is placed at a horse ranch protecting and guarding the race horses there, while trying to solve stolen horses, tampering with horses and the races. And of course her trusty companion, Renegade, is by her side. Colt is on his territory trying to locate a man his team has been hunting for some time. And in between he is dealing with decisions about his ex and his son. This well crafted plot had intensity, intrigue, twists and turns, danger, betrayal, and surprises. This is a fast-paced story, that grabbed me at the first chapter. I just wish Colt would get a spine when dealing with his ex. I’m on team Caitlyn on this one. lol. A must read. I received a complimentary ARC, but I am voluntarily offering my personal opinion.
So this was my first book by this author but certainly not my last.
I listened to this book as I was gifted the audio version for my honest opinion.
This is book #6 in the series however, I didn't feel lost. This was a complete story but I'm sure there is more background on Colt and Caitlyn from the previous books.
Caitlyn is sent to a horse ranch to babysit and take care of the horses while Colt is back home trying to figure out what is killing the cows.
This is a fast paced book that just keeps going. You will be turning the pages just to see what's going on next. This is the first book I've seen this much action and it was written very well. Characters were well developed and honestly I was able to keep up even though it was book #6. I will be reading the first 5 books now and will be looking forward to the next installment.
Thank you for allowing me to listen to this audio book. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
Having being cleared to go back to field work, after her earlier abduction, Caitlyn Reed (now Branson) is anxious to get back into the field instead of doing desk work. The only problem is that the first field job they want her to do in to babysit a racehorse property that the US Marshal's have seized in southern Tennessee. Caitlyn is sure the assignment is going to be a waste of her time sitting around a ranch.
As Caitlyn heads to Tennessee, with her K9 partner Renegade, her husband Colt Branson has a mystery of his own to solve. As the local sheriff it is Colt's responsibility to learn why live stock start to die for no apparent reason. Colt is also trying to figure out how to prevent his ex-wife from taking their son to a different city. Meanwhile in NYC US Deputy Dirk Sterling, at times Caitlyn's partner, is all set to arrest Anthony Trova. Trova is a mob boss that Dirk has been investigating for over a year.
While each case is strong enough to draw the reader in, when two of the cases become one it becomes even more interesting. The reader is drawn into the world of horse racing, drug dealing and small town life. A very enjoyable read, tthat at times is hard to put down.
Jodi Burnett has once again kept me riveted with this page-turning thriller.
Caitlyn has been recovering from the harrowing experiences of her last case, but she is now ready to return to work. Her new assignment is expected to be one that should not be as dangerous and stressful as her previous one. However, it takes a more complicated turn and she and her K9 Belgian Malinois, Renegade, find themselves in pursuit of a dangerous criminal. Are they up to the task?
I enjoyed becoming reacquainted with the main characters. The animal lover will find both dogs and horses. Surprises abound as you follow this story. Colt is busy dealing with local issues and also trying to find a way keep his ex-wife from moving out of town with their son. Now that he and Caitlyn are married, they need to settle the issue of whether they will live in his home or hers.
While this book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone, in order to fully understand the beginning of the story it will help to have read at least the previous book in this series.
I was provided with an advance copy by the author, but also chose to order one to keep. No promise was made of a positive review and any opinion shared here is my own.
'Trifecta' was amazing and was a double entendre for the actions that took place in trying to solve various crimes. The mesmerizing page-turning plot was filled with suspense, intrigue, tension, and a little action. Moreover, the dynamic duo and protagonists, Colt and Caitlyn, were at it again by trying to solve their respective cases and bringing the evil men to justice. With poisonings running rampant, a gunshot wound, and Colt's son Jace and his mom's move, the sheriff and the marshal had their work cut out for them. Overall, I thoroughly liked the narrative. I received an advanced copy for free, and I am voluntarily giving my honest review.
Marshal Caitlyn Reed and her dog, Renegade, are sent to Tennessee to babysit some thoroughbred horses. She’s disappointed that she can’t return to a case with a little more excitement. Little does she know what’s in store for her. With a prisoner transfer assignment taking place on her way to Tennessee, her day starts off wrong and goes downhill from there.
This is a fast-paced, action-packed story that had me on the edge of my seat. I knew there would be nothing ordinary about Caitlyn’s latest assignment, and I was right. Between the action going on with the Tennessee property, danger to Renegade, a case in NYC, and trouble back home, there is a lot of action and suspense going on. I loved this book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Action packed with multiple converging story lines made for an exciting read. The horse racing aspect was really interesting to learn about. The character's lives and families are realistic. I don't like how much of a pushover Colt is when it comes to his ex. She is truly awful and unfortunately quite believable since I know a few women like that.
ARC review. Trifecta is the 6th book in the Tin Star K9 series by Jodi Burnett. Caitlyn Reed, US Marshall, and her K9 dog, Renegade, catch a case that is supposed to be easy to give Cait a chance to get back to work after being traumatized in her previous case. Anything but mellow, it is a fast moving, action packed storyline involving violent, dishonest men(of course) and thoroughbred horse racing. Jodi Burnett doesn’t disappoint with this riveting, page turner that hooks you from the first page.
Drugged Animals, Dead Cattle, Shenanigans at Horse Races, and PTSD!
by Barbara Kelley
"Trifecta" is Book 6 in the Tin Star K9 Series, written by Jodi Burnett. This is the first book in this series that I have read, so now I have 5 other books in my Kindle Library that I'm going to have to read. This book is excellent reading. If you are a fan of Steven Henry's Erin O'Reilly K9 Mystery series, you will love this book. First if all, the main characters are all relatable, especially Renegade, the K9 in this series. He reminds me of Rolf in Steven Henry's Erin O'Reilly series because each of these dogs have their own beautiful, funny, as well as protective of their handlers. They each enjoy playing with their doggy toys, but won't put up with any stranger being aggressive to their humans. I loved this book because it was so real with explaining Caitlyn's PTSD issues from her abduction in a previous book. The issues she and her husband Cole had with whether to live in her cabin in the country, or his house in the city that is closer to his sheriff's office, is also realistic. Cole struggles with the fact that his ex-wife plans on moving her and Cole's son, Jace, back to Missouri because it is cheaper to live in Missouri than it is to live in Wyoming. This is not Cole's only problem. Caitlyn gets put on assignment in Tennessee on a horse ranch, to get the horses and the ranch ready for sale by a government seizure. While she's in Tennessee, and then later in Florida at a horse race that is related to her case, Cole has to deal with a bunch of dead cows that are being poisoned. What is poisoning them? Is it intentional by a human factor? Or is it something in the water or feed source? Cole also has to deal with a bunch of adults acting like little kids, fighting and yelling at each other, domestic disputes. And Caitlyn is suffering going back to work too soon after she was abducted in that earlier book. She wants to be at work, but certain people's behavior cause her to almost relapse. There are cases of drugged animals, in both Caitlyn and Cole's necks of the woods; somebody drugs poor Renegade in Florida; a bunch of nasty drug dealers and racehorse enthusiasts are fixing horse races; and Caitlyn and Cole have to deal with being apart from each other for a long period of time. Then there are bad guys who should rot in prison for the rest of their lives, but who wind up in Witness Protection. There are bad guys who are so filthy rich that they think their lawyers can get them cut loose from prison, and they just might be right. Then there is a missing man in Caitlyn's case. Is he dead? Or is he going to be an instrumental element in Book 7? I gave this book 5 big fat stars. I received an advanced reader's copy and have given my honest review. I look forward to the next book in this series, and since I already have books 1-5 in my Kindle, I will hopefully read those before book 7 arrives.
Non-stop suspense and danger for US Marshal Caitlyn Reed and her husband Sheriff Colt Branson. Caitlyn is recovering from the abuse she suffered on her earlier case, but needs to be back at work. A simple case, transferring a prisoner ends up not being so simple. Her next assignment to protect a home that the marshals have seized requires her to care for racehorses, which should be no problem until she learns that there are twenty of them and two have been stolen. In the meantime, her partner Dirk Sterling, is tracking a wanted criminal. Colt is dealing with a personal issue and the mysterious death of cattle at several of the ranches. Will he be able to find out what is killing the animals? When things spin out of control while Caitlyn accompanies a jockey and horse to the race track, she realizes her case may be involved with Dirk’s. She is one tough agent, especially when someone tries to harm her partner, K9 Renegade. A twisted mystery that will test both Colt and Caitlyn to the limit. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation, from the author, for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
To a foreign layman like myself this novel was an enjoyable insight into various US law agencies, the rocky development of Colt and Caitlyn's relationship and interesting crime. I enjoyed this novel for a variety of reasons: there wasn't as much romance as in the previous novel that I reviewed(Bloodline) and, what there was, had more of an 'edge' to it while the main crime was something completely different from the usual 'cops and robbers' idea making it more intriguing. So, if you want an insight into the various demands on a Wyoming sheriff, coping with PTSD and an interesting, horse based case for a Federal Marshal then this is the novel for you. Mysterious cow deaths, domestics, drugged animals and crime syndicates are all involved in the mix not to mention a devious, temporary 'femme fatale' that causes her partner some angst.
A vague review but I don't want to give away too much of the plot so as not to spoil readers enjoyment. Finally, I read an ARC copy but the opinions expressed here are all my own.
This is the ongoing saga of Caitlyn and Colt. They are now married. Caitlyn gets an interesting (she thinks it’s boring) assignment to a horse farm. Someone in the book mentions that trouble seems to always “find” Caitlyn. I agree! Colt also has his problems with his sheriff’s duties. There is a setup for an ongoing storyline of trouble brewing too. Good story, lots is going on. Renegade also gets to be a hero! Can’t wait to see how this all develops! Highly recommend!
A very exciting read about K9 Renegade and his handler Deputy Marshal Caitlyn Reed where she is assigned to a racehorse recently seized by the Marshal service. It seemed like a easy job till some horses go missing, shorts are fired and Renegades life is in danger. A case that shows corruption all the way to New York City. A very fast pace and exciting read. I am on the ARC team and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers.
She has been working hard with her K9 dog that when she gets her next job it seems like it will be like a holiday. Unfortunately things will not stay that way when horses disappear. He will get a job and his is not going to go well either. What will they both face? Can they deal with it all? Can they solve the crimes? See jus where they will take you
I adore Jodi Burnett'a story line! Cannot wait for the next K9 instalment. Truly love the love and friendship between Renegade and Caitlyn! Also love the story of breeding dogs to side others, not only in police matters. Jodi has a handle on how to get the public involved in rescuing and safely breeding dogs. Way to go!!!
Caitlin is back along with her husband Colt. She is on leave from the Federal Marshalls with her dog Renegade. Caitlin. is eager to get back to work after being nearly killed but Colt is not so sure. The book is action packed and the plot is great. I love the characters and how they interact. There are 3 different stories combined and it makes for great reading. I recommend this book for all action readers.
You do not have to place your bets on this book. It’s a winner. There is no horsing around here. Many intertwined stories are tied together at the end. This book closes quite a few story lines that had left me wondering how they all could fit together. Jodi give you a few harrowing and gut wrenching story lines as well as one or two tears along the way to balance this story. Please read this, Book 6, in the series.
Another awesome Caitlyn and Renegade thriller!! And a nail biter at that! I definitely had my pulse racing and sometimes holding my breath as Caitlyn gets into some tight spots. I love this series and now I can't wait to read the new Dirk series.. 🙂
Caitlyn is a kickass Marshal and yet is not good at reining an overprotective husband. Colt is only tough with Caitlyn and lets his son's mother blackmail him. However Caitlyn and Ren are and extraordinary team and they get the job done.
Trifecta is the best book of the series! It was fun, fast paced and action packed. And as always it is suitable for most any age to read. Katlyn and Colt do it again in this book, and wind up bringing in new and old criminals. I really suggest this series for anyone who likes a good mystery with a lot of action.
I have never been disappointed when I buy one of these books. There’s always plenty of excitement and action. I love the chemistry between the characters and Renegade. Another great story.
(4.5) Page Turning Suspenseful Read. Caitlyn is steal dealing with after effects from her recent captivity. Dealing with PTSD and trying to get back on board with her US Marshall Job. Cole is dealing with his fear of losing Caitlyn and the selfishness of his ex girlfriend, the mother of his son. Jodi hits it out of the park with the self doubts and workings within Cole and Caitlyns relationship. Sadly its one foot forward and two feet back. I am not a physical person but I would to smack Amanda. When Caitlyn goes to Kentucky she is frustrated that she is basically having to "babysit" she wants to go back to real work. You know that saying, be careful what you wish for? Phew in spades. Renegade is our snarling marshmallow. Yes its an oxymoron, but oh so true. Renegade you have my heart. We travel around in this book and see different scenarios. There is one little thing that threw me. When she is at the track and Renegade is not where she left him. The reaction just wasn't Caitlyn to me, she is intense with Renegade. Then in the next scene, she seemed a little slow. IMHO. I am reader, not a writer, just a reader, sharing my opinion. If you like connecting with the characters, learning bits and pieces on so many things, seeing couples deal with day to day life and having an awesome dog as intrigue and suspense run through, you will like Jodi Burnett. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #Trifecta #tinstark9 #jodiburnett #SDGpublishing #bookfunnel
I love Jodi Burnett’s books. Where Caitlyn goes trouble finds her. A simple babysitting job of race horses. No sweat, feed, groom, and watch over them. Right….,, this is a fast action packed book. Colt, while Caitlyn is away, finds himself at a loss to what was hitting his town. Oh yea to add to the mix is a very demanding selfish ex girlfriend, Allison, and his sweet son Jace. Awesome book.

Trifecta (Tin Star K9 Series Book 6), my eleventh read from author Jodi Burnett, who has rapidly become one of my favorite authors. This book continues the trend of well-written, enjoyable books, it caught my attention in the opening pages & I never put it down until completed. So when the opportunity to read the audiobook arose I jumped at it. Burnett has created a complete world in which her primary characters interact with an ever-expanding world of repeat characters, some very familiar from her other series. "I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Narrator Joyce Oben's talented reading adds to a wonderful book's enjoyment. I look forward to reading more in this series & more from this author, and look forward to Extraction - US Marshal Dirk Sterling - Book 1. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
