No Pepper, Please, the second book in the Amanda Danvers Mysteries, is every bit as wonderful as the first. Once again, the playful, clever title immediately drew me in, and the story behind it did not disappoint. Having not long helped discover who murdered the body she discovered at her carwash in No Dumping Allowed, Amanda finds herself pulled into another mystery, this time with much more personal stakes. When a man collapses at her stepmother’s café under suspicious circumstances, Amanda can’t help but investigate. What at first appears to be a heart attack slowly unravels into something far more curious, and Amanda’s determination to find the truth keeps the story moving at a lively pace. At the same time, the book weaves in Amanda’s personal life, particularly her growing relationship with Ethan. Watching her struggle with the complexities of love and trust adds another layer to her character, and as pieces of her past are revealed, you can see how deeply that history shapes her choices. Amanda remains the heart of the series: practical, kind, witty, and refreshingly honest. What I especially loved in this instalment is how her vulnerabilities become more visible, making her all the more relatable.
The writing here shines in a way that perfectly complements Amanda’s personality. It’s clear, engaging, and deceptively simple, yet with much hidden depth. The author has a gift for balancing humour with sincerity, keeping the mystery light hearted without losing emotional resonance. I also have to mention Nina, a new character who absolutely leapt off the page. She’s funny, vibrant, and adds a delightful spark to the narrative. The ending delivers both excitement and laughter, a clever and satisfying combination. It’s rare to find a mystery series that blends warmth, wit, and intrigue so seamlessly, but this one does it beautifully. I sincerely hope L.M. Ford continues with the Amanda Danvers series, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
