Dark Waters is a dual point of view story about trauma and mental illness, and learning to navigate and fall inlove with someone who suffers from severe depression and suicidal ideation.

Harlow and Jakob grew up together in Minters, a small city where everyones dirty laundry and business is on display for everyone else. They meet years earlier, both trying to treat the waters of their own lives and overcome their own traumatic events in adolescence. Years after both have graduated and seemingly tried to move on, an impromptu house party in the quiet back drop of the city and an (almost) tragedy forces them back together.

Absolute masterpiece. The writing is romantic and exquisite. All of the details of this world are breath taking. These characters and their stories are completely captivating, vulnerable, and heart breaking. I ended this book wishing it didn’t have to end but it was the perfect ending. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

This book was given to me by a stranger.. and while it is not something I would normally pick for myself, it kept my attention all the way through. It was captivating and heartbreaking. And while I do wish this story could’ve ended differently, I suppose that’s the whole point isn’t it? Sometimes real life hands us heart wrenching stories that we wish had different endings, things that we could change the outcome of.
