The Forty Hadiths of Al-Nawawi: With Ibn Rajab's Additions

Rate this book
The forty ḥadīths of Imām al-Nawawī (d. 676) is an important collection of prophetic traditions that serves a useful stepping stone for beginner students seeking to learn more about the religion of Islam, its foundations and underpinnings. The scholars of Islam, till this day, often recommend this book as good primer text for interested students, and I have been recommending it to friends and acquaintances who ask me to provide them syllabi for their religious education for several years.

The core of al-Nawawī's book (d. 676) commenced with the erudite scholar of ḥadīth and Shāfiʿī jurist, Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ (d. 643). Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ (d. 643) initially held a session titled, al-Aḥādīth al-Kulliyya (The Comprehensive Ḥadīths) , where he dictated 26 ḥadīths that he deemed comprehensive of many of Islam's foundations. Later, al-Nawawī (d. 676) acquired those ḥadīths and added 16 more ḥadīths to them, raising their number to 42. Al-Nawawī’s collection of those 42 ḥadīths quickly became a popular book within the Muslim world with many scholars authoring derivative works that revolved around it. Around a century after al-Nawawī’s death, the Ḥanbalī polymath, Ibn Rajab (d. 795), wrote a commentary on the forty ḥadīths of al-Nawawī, and he added eight more ḥadīths to the collection, hence raising their number to 50.

This translation seeks to provide the English-speaking Muslim community with an accessible, reliable and comprehensible translation of the 40 ḥadīths of al-Nawawī and Ibn Rajab's additions to the English language. It also includes the Arabic text for an easy side-by-side reference for those that are interested. Hopefully, this effort gives this book its due justice, especially in light of the scarcity of decent hard copies of English translations.
