International bestselling author J.A. Owenby grew up in a small backwoods town in Arkansas, where she learned how to swear like a sailor and spot water moccasins skimming across the lake.
She finally ditched the south and headed to Oregon. The first winter there, she was literally blown away a few times by ninety-mile-an-hour winds and storms that rolled in off the ocean.

Eventually, she longed for quiet and headed up to snowier pastures. She now resides in Washington state with her hot nerdy husband and cat, Chloe (who frequently encourages her to drink). She spends her days coming up with ways to torture characters in a way that either makes you want to throw your book down a flight of stairs or sob hysterically into a pillow.

J.A. Owenby writes new adult and romantic thriller novels. Her books ooze with emotion, angst, and twists that will leave you breathless. Having battled her own demons, she’s not afraid to tackle the secrets women are forced to hide. After all, the road to love is paved in the dark.

Her friends describe her as delightfully twisted. She loves fan mail and wine. Please send her all the wine.

The characters weren’t well enough developed, the suspenseful aspect of the story felt foreign and uncoordinated.
Although I almost liked Tensley, I couldn’t connect with Layne. It was as if he came out of nowhere and his backstory wasn’t so much convincing!
I really loved the friendship between Tensley, Benji and Avery! 🤗
I just didn’t enjoy this book...

I had a really hard time getting into this one. This one had my least favorite type of “hero” a guy who does shady douchey things, but gets away with the nice guy persona. I’m sorry but the backstory doesn’t support him being kind or even the later revealed part that he had liked:loved the heroine in high. He never took a chance and made a move on her, he was too self absorbed and fixated on dating the queen of the mean girls instead. That girl may have made a move or two behind his back but they went to the same school! There is no way she hid that much of her personality from him. But he couldn’t bring himself to care, he was too busy screwing her and getting her knocked up. The heroine could have used his support and protection. He caused both of them so much pain because he was too shallow to think she was good enough to work for. How are we supposed to give him a chance after that. How many times was she getting abused somewhere while he was somewhere screwing the villain? This plot could have possibly worked if he had been single and pining for the heroine etc. But every single time I tried to get back into the plot, I just help thinking how much the heroine suffered, how many times she was raped, and how vile his girlfriend was to her all while he was screwing the chick. The heroine finally got her life together and now he wants to come along with his sob story trying to get her to feel bad for him, forgive him, and be with him? I really almost laughed. She didn’t need him and she also forgave him way to easily. When you add in all of the other random pointless drama, this book was an overall mess

One of the best romantic suspense novel I've read in years.

Fast-paced, intense, addictive, romantic, emotional, thought provoking and a whole lot more....such an amazing romantic suspense

Hooked from the first line, this book will keep you on your toes, keeps you guessing about where the book is going to take you next and ensures you feel all the feels.

Meet Tensley: a strong, independent, loyal, suspicious woman who is trying to escape her past and Layne, the gorgeous, broody, deep, man's man from Tensley' past.

A night out turns Tensley's whole world around...Her past is about to bite her in the butt.

Tensley doesn't know what to think when Layne shows up in her favourite bar...she just knows she needs to stay away. Then her world turns upside down and he becomes one of the only people she can count on...

With the support of her best friends (Benji and Avery), Benji's parents and some other favourites you may recognise...Follow their emotional journey as they try to overcome preconceived ideas, their pasts and their own issues whilst trying to understand why things have started to happen now...

Tensley and Layne are truly couple goals...and EOY has now became my all-time favourite Owenby book.

Not the best, but not totally terrible either.

I am kind of on the fence with this one. I was hot then cold, in then out, up then down. Why? Because this story fluctuated between good and bad; boring and exciting; and at times, not just the story, but the characters seemed sophomoric.

This story started out interesting. There's some not very pleasant history between the H and h back in their high school days. So when he turns up in her life again, a few years later, you're expecting a lot of antagonism initially and a slow, not so easy, fall into love, but that's not the case. All too quickly, their bad history is resolved and it turns sickeningly sweet. Sickeningly because at this point you're only maybe a little over a quarter into this story and you wonder...is this all i'm going to get? You feel like you're getting their HEA and you're not even half way through it. I got bored, put it aside and read another book.

I really hate having unfinished books on my kindle (it's an OCD thing), so it was either finish it or delete it. I decided to give it another chance and, fortunately, it wasn't long before an new development occurred that made it interesting again. Unfortunately, it's also where I found the characters, particularly the h, acting 'out of character'. What I mean is, considering her past history (not just the one with the H), some of her actions/comments just didn't fit...didn't seem plausible or real. Then there were times when the characters seemed like mature young adults (they were in their early 20's) and others when they acted like teenage high schoolers. And the sexual encounters between the Hand h were sometimes lacking too. There seemed to be a disconnect making the whole thing seem contrived. It was basically he did this, she did that, he did this and we came. There was no flow to the actions, no real feelings or emotions given during.

In the end, it wasn't a bad storyline, it just wasn't executed well enough. The characters were likeable but inconsistent and often one dimensional. Basically, the heart and soul was missing and I was unable to connect with the characters and their story.

Just Wow! I don’t feel like I have the writing skills to adequately review this book! 5 stars certain aren’t enough and don’t do this author justice.

This story is one of the most intense, jam-packed, and emotional roller coaster rides I’ve ever read and I absolutely loved it. 5 stars just aren’t enough!

Tensely is a young woman who has overcome a significant amount of pain and trauma to come out the other side with two close friends Benji and Avery who are her college roommates. These two friends provide her with the emotional support to lead a productive and happy life until someone from her past shows up unexpectedly who throws her into an emotional crisis. Experiences from the past lead Tensley to belief certain things about Layne that may or not have been true.

When Benji and Tensley are attacked, Layne unexpectedly comes to their rescue, saving their life and forcing Tensley to reconsider who he really is and whether or not he was involved in a very traumatic event prior to High School graduation.

Tensley and Layne spend a significant amount of time together, and they develop a strong emotional bond. Their relationship just starts to deepen when more surprising events take place. Their relationship continues to deepen and grow as the world around them brings new revelations, danger, and suspense.

JA Owenby has packed a lot of intense storyline in a fabulous read that keeps the reader fully invested and eagerly anticipating what happens next. The story ends with a HEA. The storyline fits within a world where characters from previous works by the author reappear, enough to say hello like old friends but not enough to cause confusion if you haven’t read her previous books.

This is a fast-paced book that I was sad to see end because it was just so good and I wanted more of Tensley, Layne and her friends and family.

Tensley is living her second chance and life is good. Good friends, school, a future. But one look into familiar grey eyes changes everything. The one man she never wanted to see again is somehow looking back at her. Layne Garrison. Her high school bully. The life she ran from, the one she left behind comes crashing back. The foster homes. The abuse. The loneliness. The pain. But things are different now and maybe they weren't what they seemed to be back then. Maybe her second chance includes Layne; maybe he needs a second chance as much as she did. Just as it looks like her future got even brighter, her past resurfaces once again and this time it puts them both at risk. This time she may not get another chance.

Romantic. Suspenseful. Emotional. A story of redemption, survival, and especially love. This is an action-filled intense book that will keep you entertained from beginning to end. The suspense builds throughout the book until you can't put it down. Each time you think you know; you don't. Tensley's past will break your heart and her present will fill you with hope. Her friends Avery and Benji will win your heart and make you want them as your own. Benji is one of my favorite characters ever. I adore his family as well. Tensley and Layne are everything. Their relationship is an emotional journey that will have you smiling, crying, sighing, and swooning.

Dark Intentions by J.A. Owenby kept me up all night, devouring chapters. Tensley and Layne’s romance sizzles amidst a backdrop of pure intrigue. Their backstory is deep, making the evolution of their romance captivating and raw. J.A. Owenby tackles difficult topics — assault, hate crimes, foster care, traumatic loss — with an unflinching honesty that speaks to the importance of the issues. Dark Intentions is unputdownable, comprised of a hero and heroine who struggle against all the odds to achieve a happily-ever-after, and supporting characters that are just as lovable. Highly recommend!

This was not dark, not angsty, and I was not on the edge of my seat. This started alright, I was not a fan of the writing but wanted to give the story a chance and it just kept getting worse. Adding things for shock value gets you nothing if the writing and plot don’t support them. Plus instalove. So do with that what you will.

Love, pain, redemption, shock, joy, fear, laughter, and more. This book has it all.

The Essence of You has fully developed characters, you learn about their traumatic past and how strong and resilient they are. I had tears wanting to hold Tensley and let her know she would not only make it through but provide amazing strength to those around her.

There are plenty of comical and amusing parts that had me giggling and laughing out loud.

While reading you can sense that something is going to happen, like the suspenseful music in a horror movie, but what actually happens is a complete surprise. This book will keep you on your toes.

There are several subtle clues along the way, but you can never fully anticipate what actually happens. It is best to read the book twice, or more, to pick up on the the little things. Reading it the second time, I gasped as I found the clues, knowing what was coming and realizing there was no way to stop it. I wanted to shout out to Tensley, Benji, or Layne to save them.

I felt all the emotions with this book. J. Owenby has far exceeded all expectations and this book is 100 times better then I anticipated, and I was anticipating a lot.

A must read!

2024 reads, #33. I picked up this book in my ongoing attempts to read widely and deeply within the world of quickie genre novels published through Kindle Unlimited, in order to stay on top of the latest trends so to better help my freelance clients who publish under the same circumstances. In this case you can think of the story as being essentially half-and-half a romance novel and a cozy mystery novel, about a young woman who accidentally reconnects with a man from her childhood who used to brutally bully her (it’s okay -- it was actually his pushy girlfriend at the time who forced him to do it), but who then discovers halfway through the book that her estranged father who she’s never met is actually a serial killer, and is back in town to make her life a living hell.

To its credit, this book has the opposite problem from most quickie Kindle Unlimited reads -- it’s not way too short but rather way too long -- but that nonetheless results in a problematic reading experience, with lots of scenes that should’ve been just summed up in a single sentence (“like Bob had mentioned, the blood test down at the hospital only took ten minutes”) but that instead go in excruciating detail for pages upon pages (“We arrived at the hospital. Bob opened the door. I walked through the door. We asked the receptionist where room 116 was. She told us to go down the hall and take a right. We went down the hall and took a right”...). Combined with a plot that’s pretty easy to guess, and a writing style that’s fairly pedestrian (be prepared for every character to be the ur-archetype of whatever kind of person they represent -- the gay guy’s the gayest gay who’s ever gayed, the villain is the most villainous villain who’s ever villained), that results in a book that was just barely mediocre in this case, which is why it’s getting 2 stars out of 5 when usually I give so-so Kindle Unlimited novels 4 stars so to embrace the lowered expectations of this form of publishing. Go into it, if at all, with this warning in mind.

Let this man love you...

Tensey escapes the horrors of foster homes, and the nightmare called high school in Arkansas. She's a college student in Spokane, with a new name and her future ahead of her. She also has the two best friends/roommates ever - in Benji and Avery. They go out one night, and someone from her past is there. Layne rescues Tensey and Benji the next night, then works to gain her trust, apologizing for his part in her bad high school experiences, and they begin to move forward. They both have demons, but truthful conversations set them headed in the right direction. Until her past comes back to haunt her, and everyone she loves is in danger. This is just a wonderful romantic suspense, and so moving. The story moves right along, never stopping long. I was surprised at the plot twists, most of which I never saw coming. Avery is a little flighty and flirty, but such a good friend. Benji is the bestest best friend ever. His parents, Marilyn and Michael - OMG - I don't know if there are enough good words to describe them. They treat Tensey as their own daughter, not just in words, but by their actions as well. Even though she has had a crappy past, she manages to have a bright future because while her circle is small, it's oh so tight and filled with good people who love each other. I wish I could give this more than five stars... I received a free copy of this book, and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Dark Intentions is the first book in the brand new Wicked Intentions series. It's an enemies to lovers book that is highly emotional for the tragedy in the MCs past but they do get a HEA. High school to college, best friends, a found family and he falls first.
TW: Off page rape, attempted rape, bullying, hate crime, foster care, neglect, kidnapping, murder, death of a child, PTSD and bloody violence.

Tensley Bennett has tried to put her past behind her by moving from Arkansas to Spokane, Washington, changing her name, enrolling in college and gaining not 1 but 2 best friends. Her life was going well for once when while out at a favorite bar she locked eyes with a man that she never wanted to see again. One of her high school bullies and she hated him with a passion.

Layne Garrison needed a new start so he has moved to Spokane to live with his Uncle and attend college. He can't believe who he's seeing and he knows he must apologize to her but she keeps running away from him.

Tensley and her best friend, Benji, are attacked and Layne comes to their rescue. He refuses to leave her side and very quickly goes from her enemy to her savior and in the next few weeks they see each other daily.

Layne has gained her trust and one stormy night he shows her that she's not the only one with demons and it's her turn to save him. Layne expresses his love for Ten but it isn't an easy task for her.

But when danger enters all of their lives and Layne out smarts her kidnapper with dark intentions, she knows his love is what she wants for the rest of her life.

I’ve had this book on my kindle for awhile and decided to finally pick it up. Avery was in the foster care system and was bullied really bad in high school by a girl name Chloe. Apparently Chloe thought her boyfriend Layne had a crush on Avery so she chose to make Avery’s life a living hell. This whole time Avery thought Layne was in on it and helped Chloe ruin her high school years. Fast Forward many years later and Avery is in college. While out one night she spots Layne. Is he there to continue to make her life hell? Or try and befriend Avery? This book is one of those ones that is very simple and easy to read and sometimes easy to not pick up but you also need to know how it ends. There are some heavy topics the more the book goes on so keep that in mind and read trigger warnings if necessary. This book was nothing like I thought it was going to be until what happened 50% in happens. I felt like they were trying to throw anything and everything into this book. I got a bit annoyed by the end. It’s like this book was on the lighter side but had dark themes randomly thrown in. I really loved Layne’s commitment to proving he isn’t who Avery thinks he is. This book is steamy at times and you couldn’t help but root for Avery and hope she gets the life she deserves.

The Essence of You by J.A. Owenby is the story of Layne and Tensley.
Tensley didn't not have a good childhood. Tensley grew up in foster homes that were awful. In addition she was also bullied in High School with one incident Tensley had believed Layne was behind. But now in her current day she has started a new life in a new area and in college. Tensley also has two good friends Benji and Avery who are her family really. But one night when they are out Tensley happens to see her past in the eyes of Layne. Layne wants to correct the past and try to help Tensley move away from those bad memories. But Tensley isn't so trusting after being hurt before. Enjoyed this second chance at love with the bully redemption story line.

The twists and turns kept me reading all night! I had to call in sick to work the next day because I didn't get any sleep. J.A. Owenby writes complex characters that you just can't get enough of. The relationships Tensley has with friends and family leaves you wanting more, and Layne.... yum. A romance you never saw coming and can feel the heat a mile away. Who turned up the thermostat?!

This book was another 5 + star read by an amazing author. As much as I love Gemma and Hendrix I have to say that Tensley and Layne might have beat them to my number one favorite couple by this author. This book was filled with so many twists and turns that fully kept my attention and once I started I couldn't stop reading until I have read every last word. I was glad to see all the past couples but also for this amazing couple to finally get their happily ever after. I am excited to see what this amazing author has in store for us next.

When their paths cross again Tensely and Layne have no idea where it could take them. What Tensley thought was the reality of her past, could be changed forever when she runs into Layne. Years after their last encounter and many many states away here they are face to face. Could this be the a beautiful new life or the beginning of the end???

The Essence of You – J. A. Owenby

J. A. Owenby starts off this story with sadness, angst and the feeling that the worst is yet to come. When it does come it doesn’t get better. Beliefs are altered, truths are finally told and still there are hard truths and prejudices that cause not just mental stress but physical injuries.

In The Essence of You J. A. Owenby brings to life the stories of the main characters Tensley and Layne. They knew each other in high school and what Tensley considers one of the worst times of her life. When they run into each other again in Spokane, Tensley’s reaction is visceral and she has no wish to ever run into him again. One night Layne is in the right place at the right time and that allows Tensley and Layne to move forward with a new fresh friendship.

As a group, Tensley, Layne, Benji and Avery will face an outside intrusion into their lives that puts them all in danger.

From enemies to lovers Tensley and Layne become a force to be reckoned with. Benji finds his inner will power and overcomes what could have been devastating and Avery will find out that she should be valued and treated like a valued person in any relationship she has.

Reading this story was emotional, sigh worthy, turbulent, terrorizing, had hot sex scenes and had some very happy celebratory moments. As always, she weaves several issues facing youth and young adults of today when it comes to homophobia as well as a continued crisis in many Foster situations. I love that she is always stepping up to the plate and bringing forward issues that should not be forgotten.

She also brought back some of our favourite characters, Pierce and Sutton, Gemma and Hendrix and Franklin. J. keep these stories coming because I really enjoy reading them!

I was given an ARC advanced reader copy of this book to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

So, I'm not going to rate this one yet. I'm not sure if I was distracted or just now entering a book slump, but this book did very little for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the book up until Benji's and Tens' attack and then it just fell apart.

I mean, Tensley goes from literally vomiting in fear when she sees Layne to forgiving him after one discussion? Then from the relationship development between her and Layne, the friendships, everyone loving her and supporting her...I don't know, it just felt too...easy for me. I'm not particular to lots of angst and drama, but it was just too cookie cutter.

So I'm not going to rate this one. I'll re-read it in the future. I did like coming across other characters I loved (Hendrix, Gemma, etc).

WOW. Emotional. Steamy. Intense. Action-packed. Humorous. Suspenseful. This story has everything you need! An enemies-to-lovers tale with laughter, tears, heat, twists - it's a thrilling ride through the lives and love story of Tensley and Layne, and how they reach their happily ever after. It's a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat and not wanting to walk away until you've reached the conclusion. Absolutely loved the cameos from the Love & Ruin series characters as well!! Definitely recommend reading - you won't regret it!!

OMG!!! This book!!

Okay, I don't usually write a long review, but this deserves more that a quick sentence. I don't like giving a full synopsis of a book. The blurb is enough to decide to buy and read. However, I can say that this is a guaranteed rollercoaster ride of emotions and action!! I literally stayed up all night and blew through it! I hate when that happens. It's such a good book that you don't want to put it down, but you finish it too quickly! I cried, I gasped, I cried again!! Do yourself a favor and read this book!!

I think that this might be the most action packed book that J.A. Owenby has published. It was so difficult to put it down when I had to get back to work as Tensely‘s story really grips you in the books grasp. While having plenty of action and some great thrill isn’t new for Owenby, there was just something about this one that has made it my favorite so far. You can’t help but keep guessing the further along you go into the book

Beautiful second chance love story ❤️

Tansley’s childhood was every child’s nightmare, bounced around around foster care with abusing father’s and highly bullied in high school. Her only way out was to move away and change her identity. Three years later she comes face to face with the boy she never wanted to see again.
