Magic Knight Rayearth was the seminal fantasy series that skyrocketed the manga creation team CLAMP to international superstars. Now they are the most published creators in America. The Art of Magic Knight Rayearth features over 75 full-color paintings from CLAMP, most of which have never before been seen in America. The book also includes a black and white supplement on the making of the Rayearth manga.
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
There are two art books for Magic Knight Rayearth, each dedicated to one half of the story. Personally, I think they could and should have easily been released in one volume. Then again, it might also be that the first was originally released while the second half of the series was still running.
In any case, whether in one or two volumes, this is another great collection and just what an art book should be like; filled with beautiful illustrations and just a few pages at the back with comments on the individual artworks and some information about their material and work-processes.
When it comes to CLAMP, I am particularly fond of their Copic illustrations. Luckily, Magic Knight Rayearth's illustrations consist entirely of Copic artworks. They're beautiful and vibrant colours and work particularly well with the main characters colour schemes of red, green and blue. It's also great to see Hikaru, Umi and Fuu spending time together in normal day to day activities as we don't get to see that side of them during the actual series.
There are also some illustrations that feature to me unknown characters, my guess is that they are anime exclusive characters which I haven't watched. While I still think this could have all been one book, it's another great set of art books from CLAMP not to be missed!
