After the vicious battle of Neith, Elara fights to control the restless shadows within. Her resolve is tested when her younger brother, Will, is plagued by visions, a blessing of prophecy, that leaves his already fragile body weakened. It doesn't help that Zaeth, the mysterious dark fae, encourages Elara to embrace her darkest desires despite her attempts at maintaining her place beside the heroic human general, Alarik.
This book was such a delight to read. But MY GOD did those last few chapters slay my feels!! ::sobbing:: Elara comes a long way in this book; I was very pleased with how her character grew. Her scenes with Zaeth were my faves and I couldn’t get enough of them when they were together on page. There’s also a new POV that I think y’all will enjoy… 👀
I have no idea where the story will go from here, but I can’t wait to find out!! After that ending, I’m eagerly counting down the days to book 3 is in my hands
I am insanely frustrated with this book. The amount of times I wanted to DNF it were ungodly.
Plot? GREAT.
Issues? APLENTY
1. Hella typos
2. WHAT WAS THIS RANDOM DUAL POV MESS!!!
Was the dual POV even necessary? Absolutely not. I found myself yanked out of the flow of the story too many times to jump into dual POVS that made no sense. I was under the impression after reading an entire first book in our main characters POV that it would continue like that. I hate multiple POVs and for this reason. All the characters read as if they’re the same. I began getting confused with who was narrating way too often. I’m guessing the reason for the dual pov was to introduce another romantic plot line that had no depth like all of the other characters.
They hate each other until they’re kissing two seconds later. I get the connections but gosh give us some tension and angst. A fight for feelings. Not miscommunication after miscommunication delving into relationships that have no back bone. I swear our main characters for the romantic plots were sharing 3 scenes together and ready to foam at the mouth for one another.
Don’t even get me started on Zaeth. Elara and Alarik were together or really in a situationship. And zaeth is over here making her feel guilty for it after seeing her like twice. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.
My main complete is the depth of the characters. Elara is very complex and you get more feeling from her but when we switch to Greers POV it’s not much different. Then their romantic partners just read as if they’re the same person. Alaric, Zaeth, and Ryuu all just seemed too similar to me. This could be the 1am post read haze I am in being tired typing all of this out but it just made me frustrated. I like the story to keep going but my frustration puts this at a two star, possible 3 after I rethink it in the morning.
Overall if feel book one and book two are just insane amounts of filler and randomness until we’re thrown in a random battle at the end of both that’s amazing but doesn’t make up for the rest of the story. The relationships are lack luster and I feel nothing for them.
I absolutely loved this story! The first book was fantastic and this one was not a disappointment. The story continues on from the last book but we get an added POV from one of Elara's sisters Greer. I really enjoyed seeing Greer's POV. It gave another perspective to the story especially with Elara as she seems to be very self deprecating and Greer has a higher opinion of her. I think the relationship between the sisters and their younger brother is one of my favourite dynamics in the book. And Evander who is like the tired parent (as mentioned by my friend Lyssa)
We were introduced to a few new characters and learnt more about the light and dark fae and I feel we are really getting into the heart of the story. The last 15-20% of the story really had me on the edge of my seat with a lot happening plot wise. My heart was torn out and the end made me need book 3 immediately!
I love Zaeth. I was intrigued by him since book 1 and we get more but I need even more of him. I do like Alarik but Zaeth *swoon*
I'm so invested in this story and I cannot wait to read the next one. Thank you to the author for the ARC.
Got my hands on an ARC of this book and I LOVED IT!! This series is 100% going to be a new favorite of mine. Here is my immediate reaction after finishing this book (I wrote this down as soon as I turned the last page):
What the hell was that ending??? I was desperately trying to swipe to keep going to another page but NOTHING! I’m so upset 😭😭 but damn was this book good!!! On the edge of my seat the whole time, and the lore and world building introduced in this second book is so interesting and I cannot get enough! I really liked seeing Greer’s POV along with Elara’s and I hope we get Lannie’s eventually as well. The family bonds in this series are so strong, especially those between the sisters and it is really great to read.
Anyway, I loved this book so much and even though that ending made me want to scream it was a great way to end the book 😂 C.L Briar knows what she’s doing!! Other goodies in this book: -prophecies -ancient lore and a powerful goddess -mysterious fae -TENSION -some spice 🔥 -sister/family bonds -protective fae males -banter And one of my favorite things: -a female MC that loves to fight and can take out anyone -a female MC that loves to bake and be pretty and holds the family together -a female MC that is calm under pressure and so smart she can heal almost anyone
The point is, there are so many ways to be strong and we all have different abilities that contribute to the success of everyone around us! We don’t always need a sword to be the toughest person in the room and being pretty doesn’t mean we are weak. I love these girls so much ❤️
This second book in the series is of the kind where you forget you’re reading and you really can’t put down.
We start right we’re we left, Elara is fighting against her inner dark desires and to do it she’s stopped training. We know that she has something “more” with Alarik but it’s not quite a relationship. Preparations to work alongside the fae to destroy the Fractured are done but as the story unfolds, they realize it may not be that easy. Friendships are made and hearts are broken but the most important question is: will they make it alive?
One of the things I love the most is that we also get Greer’s POV. I love how she thinks, how she knows her self worth, how she cares so deeply for her family and more importantly how she’s strong enough to always get through everything.
I really enjoyed Elara’s growth. She’s afraid of herself and she prefers to be seen as weak than showing her true self, she acts like something she isn’t to fit Alarik. I loved how she goes from that to embracing her inner shadows and fighting for what she believes, I loved how Zaeth had something to do with that and I’m exited to see how their relationship changes.
This book was amazing, our characters grow and learn, the plot and trama just keep getting better and that ending left me wanting more. It also made me ugly cry and it was worth it !
Well, I had to wreck my brain hard on what to say about this book.
As predicted, the fae plot overpowering the human nonsense did help the level of my enjoyment of this story. Also, Greer's POV is a treat I needed badly.
Unfortunately I can't say I could warm up to Elara in this, so much so that I can barely even recall what her side of the plot actually was other than "I have a darkness inside me, what will Alarik say if he finds out". I wish I could say her coming to terms with herself had a great impact on me, but it's not true. I find that her side of the story was incredibly predictable and it took away from the impact it was supposed to have.
What I did like was Greer, most of the new(ish) cast and the variety of fantasy creatures that had an active role and weren't treated like useless props. I still liked the world and the general direction of the plot, but why did I feel it was a revamped christian story by the end..... (hint: it's the spear and the girls connection)
p.s.: how many times can you use 'love' in every sentence before it becomes tedious and annoying. switch it up, boy.
As always, I owe a big thank you to the author for the ARC.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Spice Scale: 🌶️ and a half Heat Scale: 🔥🔥
I couldn't wait to jump back into the story, and I was not disappointed. The whole book was mid to fast paced and kept me wanting more. I was surprised to have a POV of Greer but loved every moment. She personally became my favorite. We learn a lot more about the sisters as well as their Fae friends. You don't want to miss reading this!
This is book 2 of the Storm of Chaos and Shadows Series. These books should be read in order as there is a continuing plot throughout the series.
I don't even know how to start this review. Not because it was bad, but because it was such an outstanding read. I finished last night but had to wait and truly recover from the emotional rollercoaster this book put me through. This book continues right where book one left off. We find Elara with both Alarik and his men and the group of Fae that helped them in the battle of Neith. We get to know all of the characters a bit more as the story is told through Elara and Greer's POV. This story was full of action and intrigue. I was needing to know how it would end so I just didn't stop reading. I read all day and into the night and when I was done.........I was emotionally destroyed. I FELT everything in this book. Anger, anxiety, anxiousness, wonder and sadness. They book took me through the wringer and more. I was drawn into the story and never wanted to leave. When a book can make me truly feel, I know it's a winner. And let me tell you, this book is that and more. In fact, this series has now become one of my all time top 5. It is a hidden jewel that I will be shouting from the top of my lungs for people to read it! This series is that good. C. L. Briar has a way with her writing. She can pull you into the book and writes so descriptively that you feel like you are in the story. I promise.... you will not be disappointed and will love this series just as hard. This book ends on a doozy of a cliffhanger so be prepared. You do find out some info but there are also new mysteries introduced. I am guessing that we will see numerous POV's thought the series which makes this series even better. Thank you C. L. Briar for writing this series. You have a fan for life. I give this book 5 stars but would give it way more if that was an option.
This was a solid 3.5 Stars for me, if the entire book was like the last 100 pages it would have been 4 maybe even 5 stars! There were a few things that bothered me which I will get into but this was definitely a solid and entertaining read. If you read the first book in the series and are wondering if you should continue I 10/10 recommend doing so, just the ending alone makes it worth it.
The pet peeves for me were 1) the spelling errors 2) the overuse of nicknames and 3) Some of the beginning was a little cringe-worthy when we first get into Greer's POV.
There were a lot of spelling errors in this book which I get, things happen, but with proofreaders and editors I don't quite get THIS number of spelling errors, but this is also a personal pet peeve of mine. Zaeth calls Elara "Love" like 23043 times and Jarek calls her "Kitten" wayyy too much as well. The nicknames are cute here and there but it was like 4-5 times in one page, it was just overdone.
When we first get into Greer's POV I found a bit of it to be cringe. The conversation of her and Elara talking about Orgasms gave me second hand embarassment, and the way she said she wasn't pining after Ryuu but ABSOLUTELY was as well. This definitely gets better as we read more into the book.
The positives are that the storlyine makes a lot more sense here, we get some more backstory and we start to see who these characters really are.
Definitely interested in seeing what happens after that cliffhanger! The end of the book was great and had me totally enthralled, I just wish the whole thing was that captivating. Definitely has the prospect of being amazing with the other books in the series!
Storm of Blood and Vengence starts just after a little time where it left off in Storm of Chaos and Shadows. Elara is having a hard time adjusting after the war. It is interesting and has inner self conflicts and new challenges. We meet new characters and get more POV of Greer here providing another perspective and making it much clearer. It’s a dual POV and gives a better insight in many ways. The characters are stronger than ever and have incredible growth. We get the answers to the questions arising in book one but that didn’t stop new questions to rise. I could not put it down and the end just made the desire to get my hands on the third book even stronger.
A Storm of Blood and Vengeance - Storm of Chaos and Shadows #2 - Review
Couple: Elara & General Alarik…possibly Zaeth; Greer and Ryuu
Author: C.L. Briar
Tropes: frenemy to lovers, alpha holes, hidden plots, ancient prophecy, multiple POVs
Review: AHHHHHHHHHH this book…has so much going on and so many twists, turns and hurts that it will leave you questioning everything! The book begins after El suffers the loss of Zelos. I truly hurt for her in this book because she faces blow after blow and each time she tries to get back up swinging. When El steps back from being a warrior due to her fears of being the Dark Phoenix, we meet Zaeth again along with Ryuu his winged friend.
Zaeth will be a favorite MC to me forever because he relentlessly cares and strengthens El, even when she fights against it. While this book shows more strain between the humans and the fae, we also begin to gleam pieces of the old prophecy and how they may affect the plot of the series. We learn the El’s little brother has a very important role to play and it hurt when his life was ended before it could begin….but I have a hunch that we haven’t seen all from him yet.
The book is not full of spice but it makes top for it in angst, betrayal and heart ache. The book adds a new POV in the form of Greer, El’s sister. We find that both sisters struggle to accept their feelings and place in this new world of battle and bloodshed. My favorite parts of this book were the bonds between the sisters and the devotion to end the red-eyed villain.
El and Zaeth and Greer and Ryuu are two of the fated bonds in this series and as the books progresses we learn more about each characters past and secrets hidden from magic and blood. I ended this book desperately wanting more and praying we will get chapters from Zaeth soon about his dark secret.
First off, WOW. I almost have no words to express how phenomenal this book was. It was one of those stories that I devoured in two days and almost forgot I was even reading, because I never wanted it to end. And then was completely destroyed by the end. Heart battered and soul torn.
One of my absolute favorite things of this one was getting Greer’s POV. I didn’t know I needed it until we had it. And I admit, at first I was a little skeptical about it. But dang @c.l.briar really proved me wrong! I love how she thinks and protects her family and how she sees herself. And I’m looking forward to see more from her as we continue.
Secondly, I LOVED Elara’s growth. She really came into who she was in this one and even more of a badass than I thought she was. But she started off thinking of herself as weak and afraid, and grew into finding that inner strength and fighting even more for what she believes and what she wants out of this world. And maybe even who??
Which brings me to Zaeth. I adored that he had something to do with bringing Elara to this inner peace and cheering her on. There’s something to be said about someone who sees the bad/ugly/dark in you and tells you to accept all of it and be your true self. And he would know, considering he has some secrets of his own. And BIG ONES (IYKYK 👀).
I’m excited to see how they play out and how his and Elara’s relationship progresses, in whatever way that may look. Even though I’m hoping for ROMANCE 🔥
The true genius of this book though? The last few chapters!! They slayed my heart in many ways, although mostly tearfully. Pretty sure I could’ve filled a bucket with my tears. But also I am so stoked for Greer and Elara and their newfound confidence and “abilities”!
I loved watching the puzzle pieces come together throughout the entire book, and I really enjoyed the new characters we were privy to. And I’m SUPER excited about where we’re going from here.
This book was utterly perfect for my fantasy loving soul and I’m so thankful to have gotten an arc copy. Thank you SO MUCH @c.l.briar ❤️
Read if you like: 🗡Human/Fae 🗡Strong FMC 🗡Action 🗡Prophecies and Ancient Lore 🗡Romance 🗡Crying 😂
The biggest improvements on book 1 -much less grammar and writing errors (but there was still some) -more airtime was given to supporting characters. -thankfully the MFC is less whiny and stupidly emotional. She still acts entitled but much less so from book 1. So much less eye rolling was done through this book. But much more feelings of boredom.
This book was mostly a dual point of view telling, quite a shift from book 1 which mostly was between 2 of the main female characters who are sisters. However, the writing was so similar it was hard at times to tel whos POV it was and I’d have to keep going back to the start of the chapter.
The progression of the MFC MMC from book 1 doesn’t happen. They just have wild shower and a night long sex session and “both know it was the last time” With no character developments or tiggers given to end the relationship’
The relationship between the second sister and male interest isn’t there at all. With the make interest still an enigma at the end of the book if I’m honest.
The world building is non existent.
Suddenly a big fight happens which is the only story progression to the prophecy and plot of who is the enemy where lord happens in just a couple pages. And a great big looking question of the past two books is simply revealed. By the person themselves. For no reason.or at least the reason for their doing so is lacklustre in the writing.
Unfortunately I’ll still keep reading this series. As I’m a sucker like that and must finish
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I absolutely loved book two of this series. So many times the second book in a series falls flat but this kept the momentum going. The secrets being revealed felt organic and not forced. The progression of relationships was natural, although I would have preferred a little more spice. The battle scenes were descriptive but not too chaotic. I enjoyed getting to know the new characters better as well as they seamlessly blended into the world.
This book also has dual POV. While I actually really liked hearing from another character besides Elara, sometimes it became a little confusing as Greer and Elara have similar voices. I did like how Greers POV allowed us some more romance/ tension while Elara spent this book more or less discovering herself outside of the bounds of her romantic interest.
My only real negative on the book is that the editing made some parts confusing. One sentence said her when it should have said his and I had to reread it a lot to figure out it was a typo. There were several instances of this throughout the book, towards the end there was even a complete sentence that repeated itself. These errors were enough to draw me out of the story with some confusion. Otherwise, I remained enthralled staying up way past my bedtime to read 😅
1⭐️ I feel like I’ve given this series a fair shot at this point. But unfortunately, I still don’t love it. I thought this series would get better as I read on, and that’s not to say it doesn’t. Many of the reviews are gushing about this book & how it’s an improvement from book 1, but for me personally, I just couldn’t connect.
I don’t want to ramble about negativity, but the few key points that ruined this book for me are, - There is not much destinction between the POV’s. Aside from what they do in their daily life, I was getting confused by who’s chapter we were currently in. The girls are written too similar, their lives are too similar, they read as one person. I would’ve loved some personality quirks or a struggle that one was battling with to be able to distinguish between the two. - Will’s vision/ nightmare storyline. I understand that it’s important to the story, but I found myself quite bored everytime he had one. I was also shocked at his age, he’s written like a 5 year old. - The amount of spelling mistakes, again.
I won’t be continuing this series, but that doesn’t mean I won’t give this author another shot in the future. I just think this one wasn’t for me.
The Storm of Chaos and Shadows series by C.L. Briar is a romantasy series! I am absolutely obsessed with this series!! The plotline continued to progress and keep me on my toes. I literally could not put it down! There was always something happening that kept me reading. I loved the characters! They all had depth and character development throughout the series. I loved the multiple POVs and love stories. The couples in this series were all perfect for each other and I loved seeing them all come together. I loved that even though it was a fated mates series it was not insta-love. I loved that each couple was a different trope like grumpy x sunshine and enemies to lovers vibes. I loved everything about this romantasy series. I thought the world building was easy to understand and follow throughout each book. This book had a great spice, romance, action, and adventure. I do have to say book 1 was slower as it laid the background for the rest of the series but book 2 and on was action packed and amazing. Book 1 was still really good but the rest of the series was way better for me!!
Better than it's predecessor, Storm of Blood and Vengence splits into two viewpoints as Elara continues with her training and strong desire to fight; for her family, living and gone, for Alarik, and for the humans that are still in danger as a dark, not completely known force continues to grow. Her sister, Greer, now shares her own experiences as she watches her sister fighting with herself from fear of becoming dark and evil, and feels helpless and less than as her other siblings either flourish with their natural talents, or in the case of young Will, struggling as gifts not of the human realm threaten his mortality. But memories begin to surface, and both sisters begin to realize in their own way that they are more than they realized; all of them, and they have so much potential to help sway the impending doom. Nothing will be the same by the end of this installment of the series, and where your heart will ache, things do grow dark before the dawn arrives. Time will only tell how near the dawn is.
If you’re an Acotar fan, you will not only read this book, you will devour it in less than 24 hours. This book was even better than actotar and you know what … it didn’t even require the same amount of spice. It gave the closure for certain relationship as it was supposed to be. It gave opening for new ones as unexpected as they were. But most of all, it allowed women to grow into power even though Bg a certain point they were thrust into it. Elara, Greer … they both have still a lot to learn and they will face heartbreak in this book. All three of them. But the fae are there helping them out. And even the humans regardless of how frustrating they can be (Alarik I’m talking to you man). This is another book highliting how we should never trust an author when she gives us a love interest. But maybe we should. After all what is not true for one sister can be true for the other. But after that final battle that broke my heart and that final revelation … I’m afraid to say I need book three and four now !!!!
Great book! Follows the main character Elara and her siblings as they travel through Pax trying to put a stop to the dark magic plaguing humanity while discovering their true heritage. This is a great continuation from Book 1 and heavily dives into Elara's character as she faces heart break, love, self reflection, and her part in a prophecy that effects all PAX. Elara must learn to embrace her true self and stop trying to shape herself into something she is not. In book two the reader gets Elara's sister , Geer, POV, in addition to Elara's POV. . This is an added bonus as Greer's thoughts and personality comes more to life. Greer is overall an optimistic character that finds enjoyment in cooking and begins to fall for a grumpy dragonshifter. All the siblings are very different and share a very tight bond. The only reason this book is not a 5 star for me is because there were times where the story/plot just "lulled" and needed to move along at a faster pace.
Book two picks up right where book one left off—humans and dark fae forging a fragile alliance as they prepare for war against the Fractured.
Elara’s journey is a standout. Her growth is powerful as she begins to truly embrace who she is—darkness and all. And the flirty banter with Zaeth? Chef’s kiss 🤌🏼
I absolutely adore Greer, and I loved the addition of her POV. She’s smart, snappy, and fiercely independent. The tension between her and Ryuu crackles on the page, and I love that she doesn’t hesitate to call him out. Watching her come into her power and take her place in the escalating conflict was so satisfying. 🔥
Both Lannie and Will are forced to grow up too quickly. Lannie is already proving herself to be an incredibly skilled healer, and I can’t wait to see her arc continue. Meanwhile, Will’s visions worsen, and the group’s desperate search for a solution adds emotional weight to the story. ❤️🩹
The found family dynamic is getting stronger, and the side characters bring so much richness to the plot. And just when you think you understand the stakes, you realize—this war is bigger than anyone imagined. 🤯
Another excellent installment in the Storm of Chaos and Shadows series by C.L. Briar. I’m looking forward to diving into book three!
An amazing read! I loved book 1 and book 2 did not disappoint. The story line is fantastic, I love the magic system and the different abilities of the light and dark Fae.
The characters were perfect, especially the family unit. Elara, Greer, Lannie and Will are such a beautiful family, they have each others backs so completely and the love really comes off the page. When you add Evander to the mix it’s even sweeter.
Both Zaeth and Ryuu are great and 1 or both may be added to my book boyfriend collection by the end. I have so many thoughts/questions about their pasts and future and I can’t wait to see how they both play out with the girls.
This book definitely gave me all the feels and the ending hurt way too much but I will be jumping into book 3 immediately. Do yourself a favour and start this epic journey!
This series is so underrated in my opinion! I had a really good time reading this book.
When I ended the last book, I expected the dual POV to be about Zaeth and Elara. It turned out to be Greer and Elara and that was a really good twist, because I loved Greer’s personal growth in this book. Off topic but she’s also curvy, yet a really confident and loved character. I know some bookworms really love a curvy female main character, and that just made this book extra dear to me.
The morally gray male characters in this book were TO DIE FOR I melted away every time they said something cute😭❤️
The end was super emotional and I didn’t expect that at all. But I’m so excited to read on what the third book is gonna be about!!
5⭐️ from me, I’d recommend this series to every fantasy reader for sure!
I'm really torn about this book. Overall, I didn't really like it. I read it because I was hoping the series would improve as it progressed, but I can't tell it from this book. The pacing is way off. The plot is all over the place and really confusing (as well as underdeveloped). There are a lot of plot points that feel like they are there just for the shock value. Most of the characters feel one dimensional and lack depth.
However, the author went and added a POV character that I actually really like. I may at some point continue the series just for her story.
It's not as eye-rollingly bad as some other books I've read (Fire in the Sky and Promised in Fire spring to mind), but it still wasn't what I would call good.
In my personal opinion, it was even better than the first book. It has faster pace and many nice surprises, also new character! It has a better background story too, and I love how the universe is expanding, introducing more lore and creatures.
Elara has it tough. She has been through a traumatizing experience, and it took a toll on her. I love her growth in this book! And ZAETH? I mean, Alarik who? Lol I love Alarik but Zaeth hits different. But my favorite part of this book is probably Greer and (new character alert) Ryuu! I love Greer's energy and her relationship with Ryuu is just so angsty but so perfect. I'm excited to read more about them!
I enjoyed this book a lot. I also appreciated Greer's POV, but would have liked the Elara/Greer chapters to have been 70/30. In the book it was 50/50, and I felt Elara's plot in the book did not progress as well because she did not have as many chapters. While I also liked the Greer and Ryuu romance, I was disappointed in the amount of times Elara and Zaeth even had dialogue.... After waiting for the sequel, I was most excited about their romance plot and it lacked. Greer got more of a romance plot than Elara, and Elara is supposed to be the main character. Overall, I still enjoyed this book!
This book felt like a lot of filler after reading the first in this series. I will say that this book had far less romance than the first as well. The last few chapters of this book were AMAZING, action packed, filled with emotional evoking scenes, edge of your seat drama. I wish more of this book had been like that. I’m hoping now that we got through El’s training (again because she was made to start from zero), Wills development (ouch that once hurt), and the history of El’s family we can jump into something more in book 3. I don’t think I can take another 75% of the book being so slow, so fingers crossed.
Where to begin... This story has so much potential, but it was poorly executed, lots of typos, and I was not a fan of the back-and-fortg dual POVs in this book.
While there was some decent character growth and development in this book, I dont understand how all these experienced warriors tend to defer to the plans that El comes up with. The relationships needed more tension, more build, and more development before escalating like they did.
All that being said, I did still mostly enjoy the book. It was good to read once, not necessarily something I would recommend to people to read, but I have definitely read worse. I might read the next book but not sure yet.
" Stop pretending. Stop trying to make yourself smaller than you are. You do not need to fit into their ideas of what is good. What is proper. You are stronger than them - greater. You were not meant to cower"
I really love that book, there was so many actions. The plot is very interesting. Elara is such a strong character, I love the way she embraces herself and how she reacts 😉 I enjoy having Greer's pov, there is so much about her. And that ending! Definitely wants to know more. I am also dying to know more about that slow burning romance 🔥
