War has broken out among the immortals. It’s time to choose a side.
Kat Dubois never asked to be the emissary for the good guys. Diplomacy isn’t her strong suit, and patience isn’t one of her personal virtues. But when a millennia-old god asks you to do a job to further the war cause, you do that job…especially when you’re the opposition’s most wanted.
Kat’s mission is complicated when a mysterious disease crops up among Seattle’s homeless population. It’s up to her to find a cure while the infection is contained, and to do that, she must go straight to the source—Ouroboros. It’s been a week since Kat promised to come after the twisted corporation; the time has come for her to fulfill that promise.
Lindsey is a bestselling Science Fiction and Fantasy author who lives her life with one foot in a book—so long as that book transports her to a magical world or bends the rules of science. Her novels, from Science Fiction Adventure to Time Travel Romance, always offer a hearty dose of unreality, along with plenty of history, mystery, adventure, and romance.
When she's not working on her next novel, Lindsey spends her time hanging out with her two little boys, working in her garden, or playing board games with her husband. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family and their small pack of cats and dogs.
This book was a struggle for me. I skimmed at least 25 percent of it. There were a lot of environment descriptions that I felt weren't relevant, making the story drag. I also really disliked where things headed with Garth. Her relationship with him was selfish and feels like a bad choice someone makes because it's convenient. While I don't consider myself a prude, I feel that thread of the story was...cheap, dirty, and not in line with who Kat should be. I think this was a set up for a love triangle, something I dislike since it's been overused and smacks of the cluelessness of tween romance. Also frustrating was Kat's cowardice in failing to face her demons or Nik, and the underlying self-loathing in every chapter. I was very disappointed as book one was a promising start.
It wasn't as exciting as the first one but I was not disappointed. We finally see KAT as the assassin she is, damn her torture level are good, make them vulnerable by getting them naked. Am making notes for if someone wants an assassin. KAT gets in a relationship with GARTH, I don't support them at all there's no chemistry. I want her to be with NIK!. Speaking of NIK is there a thing going on between him and MARI? Cause please no!. I still cant believe he has a daughter, excuse me WHAT!. In the ending KAT and NIK form an alliance to work together so we might see a lot of them, can't wait!. Overall this book was great.
I'm interested in the story line, but there are sooo many things that annoy me. 1- the repetitive explanations. How many times are you going to explain Nic shared a body with Ra. How many time are you going to mention being stuck at 18 body and hormones. 2-I feel like she should have just been 18 because body and hormones shouldn't have anything to do with mind set. She thinks and acts like an 18 year old all the way around.
I'm going to stop here 4 more times is going to drive me crazy. I'll check out the author and see if she has improved. Licks lips!
This is the second book in the Kat Dubois Chronicles series by Lindsey Fairleigh.
This story has a bit of a prophetic aspect to it. It concerns a virus called CV Cascade Virus that was put out into society to kill off humans. It was a pandemic and it kind of reflects what happened last year. They were experimenting in the story seeing if they could make humans immortal like Kat and her clan.
Kat finds herself running to Garth for assistance and the two find a real closeness here. Then when she draws a doorway to where the kids are on his wall, she ends up pushing him through in order to save him from assassins who were after her and this exposes him to the virus. Now they have a choice. Do they make Garth Immortal to save his life?
This is a compelling story that just gets more interesting as it goes along. It is becoming a must read series for me. . I think I am definitely hooked on the Ink Witch.
Loved so much about it. If you like a paranormal mystery, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
Ok, lets start with what's wrong with this series, other than it's not written for older people. Kat is 38 years old but looks like she's 18, the age she was when she became immortal, and she has tattoos all over and piercings on her face, too. AND she's really kinda slutty, screwing two different guys while always acting like she's crazy for Nik. I don't get it. And Nik is thousands of years old but became immortal when he was around 26 AND he's tattooed and pierced on his face too. So, I'm going to assume this author is in her 20's OR she's writing the way she thinks the younger people want to read. Either way, I don't think this author is for me.
It was a good story line, and Kat will kill you in a heartbeat, but books 1 and 2 were enough for me.
There was sex (with Garth, not Nik) and the F-bomb was used 18 times.
As for the narration: Perfect! Julia Whelan (AKA Sophie Eastlake) one of my top 5 favorite narrators.
For each chapter I felt my interest for the story dwindling. Didn't like the direction it was going, didn't like the sudden relationship with Garth and I was really getting tired of repetitive explanations that was given already in Ink Witch.
This book is Kat in hiding yet drawing attention from the Senate to find her. She learns about a disease that's been released on the humans by the kids that were in the lab she and her clan destroyed. Can she find a cure for those that are sick?
This book had more to it that felt like the story continues. There feels to be one direction with the story, not much in side stories to fill things out. We do have Kat finding "love" and happy for a moment. This is tied to the overall events and in the end felt convenient to me. Or maybe it's leading to a love triangle... That feel is potential as well.
The fight scenes felt a little better in this one as we get to see more in fights.
I felt there was something that happened that was a convenience for the characters.... Like how did one character get sick and another that is sick can be around people then... Again, I have to go listen to these sections again (if I can find them) to get answers. It's kind of vague whether one character touched anything or not to get sick.
I wanted so much to enjoy this series, but it just doesn't feel like it's for me. I'm sure others are loving it though.
Definitely better constructed than the first installment! Better pacing, no chaotic mess; this is a very solid middle book.
Kat is now living rough, hiding out from both human authorities and the Nejeret Senate, while attempting to secure more allies for Heru's declaration of authority (I think it is packaged as a declaration of war, but there are no battles). But in reaching out, Kat also discovers more about what Ouroboros was up to. In addition to grafting Nejeret bas onto humans, they seem to have created a human plague.
All the relationship stuff is a great big muddle, though. Kat reveals that there was once a kiss she shared with Nik that proved to be a breaking point between Nik and the god Re, whom he'd hosted in his body for a millennium or so. After the kiss, Re left Nik, and then Nik left the Nejeret. So now Kat is all jumpy around Nik, and pretty willing to jump into bed with anyone that isn't him. But with Garth, she's kinda jumped into a relationship, and she doesn't seem to want to acknowledge that either.
Outcast is a much more structured book compared to the first installment with a steadier pace. It definitely felt more solid.
I’m glad Kat is over her pity party of one this time around. I however, do not appreciate how she’s hiding from her problems. C’mon, she’s 38 years old. Though she may not feel like it at her current body she certainly should have the mental maturity. It’s not a stretch.
The romance with Garth is confusing. It felt like a total cop out on her potential relationship with Nik and just complicates things. Luckily, I don’t think this one will last for long.
Overall, still enjoy the story and curious to see how their world works. Interesting developments have happened and they’re assured to be fun.
Another amazing book in the Kat Dubois series, I've been listening to book 2 on audio and it is read really well by Julia Whelan. She does a fantastic job and the characters are very believable when she reads them.
I really enjoy Kat as a character, she tries very hard to give 0 fucks but in reality, she cares a great deal and finds herself in difficult and sometimes life threatening situations. Her powers are growing and her reputation as the ink witch is too, which she’s not so happy about.
I love the characters in this book and I’m a huge fan of Kat herself. I'm loving Garth but am routing for her and Nick to get it together.
” Outcast - An Egyptian Mythology Urban Fantasy ( Kat Dubois Chronicles, #2)” By Lindsey Sparks Is A Tale Of One Katrina Dubois ...once an assassin ...Now a hunter and emissary ...not an easy assignment...BUT this is WAR!! And to complicate matters one handsome policeman asks Kat to add hunting for missing street kids ...who she learns have a mysterious deadly disease ...ALL while being hunted herself ...in a ever escalating game of Kat & mouse....Pitted against a huge evil corporate giant...Ouroboros...The Nejeret Senate...and a dangerous contagion ...plus allies and foes that change sides at will ....what’s a kickass girl to do?!? Read and see. Much enjoyed and Highly Recommended.
In the thick of our own pandemic, this was appropriate for the time. Though I am still rooting for the romance that is currently seems to be threatened, I remain hopeful. The development and growth of Kat is wonderful to watch. I am reading the Echo series at the same time (on audio) and she has come a long way already. Though only 18, she developed and grown to have adult problems and the world keeps throwing her curve balls to grow even more. The plot that Lindsey weaves has endless possibilities and you still get surprised at where she takes you. Off to continue reading….
I loved Kat when I read the Echo Trilogy & I am so excited that she has her own series. I will say, I strongly suggest reading the Echo Trilogy before starting this series. It will give you some great backstory before diving into this own.
Kat is now on her own. After exposing herself to Ouroboros Corporation, she is now working to recruit others to join Heru’s cause against the the corruption in the Netjeret senate.
Kat is a character who does not care one bit what you think of her, she just does exactly what she wants. Sometimes to a bit of a detriment. She also cares very deeply for those around her.
Fun and fast paced, hardly noticed the time pass. Kat has her issues, and who doesn't? What I like about the characters is that they are all flawed in some way, they have a past, they have emotional ups and downs.
When reading, I don't expect to find perfect people plastered throughout the pages, nor do I expect them to make the same decisions that I would make. I enjoy reading about people that are different, that are real, that are imperfect. Those trying to become better. The character development in this book was really good.
The story was great. Really fast paced and I hardly noticed the time pass.
I love this series and this is my second time reading it. The characters are all very flawed and very loveable, and Kat has a superwoman ability to transcend difficulties, time and time again. Hot romance with a love/hate intensity, and Kat's almost unbelievable ability to transcend betrayals and move to forgiveness, but believable in the context of this world of Nejers and Nejerets, where old enemies have the luxury of time to become surprising allies over decades or even millenia.
The series is wonderful if you like magick, tarot, and powerful women who overcome their lack of confidence to fully own the power of who they truly are.
I love seeing Kat voulnerable. It’s refreshing. Again Kat showcases her moral compass. Even after doing her job, she still feels.
What people don’t get is that she is basically a baby in the Nejeret world. Not only that but she wasn’t able to mature properly. Doing the dirty work will haunt her, after all she still remembers her humanity. Who can fault her for that??
All I’m all this obstacle that was unleashed is nice twist to the mythological world we are used to. Great read, off to the next one!
Even though she is the most wanted, she is their savior too....
Kat has been outcast by the Senate and is on a mission for Heru, to see who fight on his side against the shadow Senate. There is a disease that the children that had been kidnapped and w were human that kills when they are in the final stages. Can Kat get to the board and get the cure from them to save the infected?
Our heroine is determine to save innocent humans, will she succeed? More action and magic to save both humanity and Nejerets.
I was not disappointed by deciding to keep going with this series. Other reviewers have mentioned that you have to read a previously written series to get Kat's while backstory, and if that's the case, I don't mind. I would like to know, but it's not necessary to enjoy this second installment. I take her at face value. Boy, the "shadow Senate" is truly evil, and I have to wonder if Kat will be romantically distracted by her partner in world-saving, Nik. On to the next!
Kat Dubois finds herself in a desperate position. Her new found love had contracted a deadly virus, one that her vary own people developed. The virus is quick lying spreading. Kat must find a cure to save her boyfriend and the growing population who have contracted the virus. Unfortunately, Kat find enemies at every turn, even those who are suppose to be on her side at not to be trusted. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The sequel to Inkwitch, really interesting. I mean the world of Kat is either comparable to ours or it's in the distant future. It reads more like a dystopia than urban fantasy. So far, the story pick up one week after the events of book 1, there is romance but a conflicted one. The action is done with Kat but I find her rather emotional in this book. I hope she will be less of a loose canon and more focused in the third book.
This is book two in this series. Kat's helping Heru get support from other Nejerets. This leds her to find not only them but street kids infected with a deadly and highly contagious disease. Fortunately Nejerets are immune. She calls up her cop friend for help and eventually things become hot between them and in the hunt for the cure. I really enjoyed this book. It's well written and very intriguing. I'll be reading the next book in this series for sure.
Things I liked: 1. Storyline and pacing was good 2. I like when author's have each book be their own story, even if there's an overarching plotline that's left unresolved. This book did this well. 3.Kats personality has been consistent yet showed some growth and development in this book, which I appreciated.
Things I didn't love: 1. Ughhh ... This book completely set up a love triangle ... Not a fan!
Enjoyable second part to the storyline which picks up right where the first book left off. Due to the relatively shorter size of both books, they could easily have been one larger book. I listened to them pretty much back to back so it felt like a single book. This book does not have a cliffhanger and resolves the action in this installment but it does also set up the next book in the series.
So yes this is a good book and I love the continuation. However, I'm more of a Nik and Kat fan than any other romance. Spoilers: Who is the mysterious Netjer and what risk is he to their universe? What risk is turning pretty much everyone immortal? Wouldn't this be a bad idea from a procreation standpoint? Still don't like Garth.
This novel was less engaging to me than most of Ms. Fairleigh’s other works that I've read. I could put it down easily and not read it for a day or two. Most of it I did find exciting but parts were difficult to read through. Also, at times it was almost predictable.
Still enjoyed the character and the storyline, but this book felt like only part of a story, rather than an entire book. She solved the problem of the infection, but it felt too easy and incomplete. I was left wanting more in a way I [obviously] wasn't with the first book in this series. Not going to be buying the next book at this time and it is not currently available from the library.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Now with the story playing out, more things become appearant as the story progresses. Still missing so much background of where, how and why the original group of people they decended from came about. I will not be continuing this Series because of this. Narrator does a good job with the characters and Storyline.
Kat is running out of time.. The world could be at a huge crisis.. Can she find the answers she needs? Who will be behind her? Who are her friends? What is really going on?
