Fractured Shadows

Rate this book
Our lands are fractured.

Split into three since before my birth…. but they were not always this way.

Once we prospered, magic filling our lands before it was locked away with them.

The monsters.

Now we suffer, we starve even as our king grows stronger.

Richer.

And then one day my sister is called upon, to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Unable to lose the one person I love, I take her place willingly.

Protecting her the only way I can.

My name is Cora Black and I’m barely twenty years old when I’m sacrificed to the monsters.

If only they knew that I crave the same darkness that lives within their monstrous facades.

If only the king knew I am just as much a monster as them.

Shadows save me, Shadows guide me.

Shadows fracture me.

I volunteer as tribute!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💜💚
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 😠☺️😋🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Cora Black - She lives in a kingdom that has been split into three lands (the Dead Lands, The Gilded Lands and the Shadow Lands). Each year, a young girl is sacrificed to the hunt to appease the monsters and this year Cora’s beautiful sister is chosen, so (like Katniss), she volunteers herself in place of her sister. The sacrifice is hunted and killed so she expects to die.

The Heroes: Grimus, Bracken, Nero, Zetros, Krug and Razcorr - Grimus is a grumpy but good minotaur; Bracken is a charming and creepy fae; Nero is a sssexy naga (serpent man); Zetros is a massive and protective kraken shifter; Krug is a strong and aloof orc; and Razcorr is a magestic and intelligent gargoyle. Each of these monsters has their own extraordinary qualities.

The Story: Cora was born in the Shadow Lands where women have no rights and belong to the men. Monsters exist beyond the borders in the darkness beyond the shadows. When the darkness creeps closer, not even light can penetrate the shadows. This is why a girl is sacrificed each year, to hold the darkness back. Women are worked till they can barely stand and are kept obedient through regular beatings. Cora can barely hold herself back from hitting her father back when he beats her. While the women work and starve, the men are fat and lazy.

The king lives in the Gilded Lands and comes to the Shadow Lands every so often and chooses the most beautiful women to be his concubines. Cora and her sister know to show up dirty and looking their worst, so they aren’t chosen, as it is better to live in drudgery in the Shadow Lands than to be at the whim of the King. Her sister Kai has a boyfriend who is much nicer than most of the men and doesn’t seem as quick to anger. Cora still wants something more.

There is a wall of magic and barbed vines between the Shadow Lands and the monsters in the Dead Lands. It is the only magic in the kingdom. When Kai is chosen for the hunt, Cora knows that she has to step in since her sister was on the verge of getting married to her true love. Her father is only too happy about his daughter being chosen, since it means he will get gold and riches.

The story is a good one, I liked all the monsters and how they were all so different and had distinct personalities. Cora goes on a journey through the Dead Lands with her men, picking up more of them along the way. They face dangers, including other monsters and have to fight their way through the lands, but they become friends along the way. The intimate scenes are super steamy and quite different since they are all monsters with strange and wonderful anatomical features.

This story was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Troy Duran and Brooke Daniels. Troy is my favorite male narrator and does a terrific job at everything he narrates. He has a deep sexy voice which is perfect for any Hero. Brooke Daniels has a clear feminine voice which sounds age appropriate for a twenty-year-old heroine and she does a great job as well.

I tried, I liked the idea but I didn’t like the FMC. Cora is meant to be a strong woman but her acts of heroism are so overtly dramatic that it comes across as insincere attention seeking. Her behaviour is bratty and she courts danger when she should play safe which is just annoying. I found the whole hunt idea didn’t develop, everyone knows about the hunt but nobody seemed to turn up to it. There are inconsistencies in the plot and random information conveniently thrown in just before it’s needed and she would have been a star student, because she learned an incredible amount in the few days she snuck into school many years ago! She falls for every monster she comes across unbelievably fast, similarly she masters her magic in just a few days (whilst camping where they’ve just been ambushed), she is just so wonderful! Personally I need my fantasy to be believable and this just wasn’t convincing for me. The final straw was Cora’s ridiculous outburst in chapter 37 after her whirlwind courtship with the Gargoyle, I decided enough was enough and I just wasn’t engaged enough to keep reading. I realise I’m in the minority here, the book just wasn’t for me.

This book is the epitome of a guilty pleasure. This book is so cringy that if anyone asks if I've read it, I will deny, deny, deny. I should not have enjoyed this, but I ate it up like a bag of potato chips. It wasn't satisfying but I couldn't stop.
The plot is flawed but entertaining if you can accept that it is a little cheap. The characters fall together in an incredibly inconceivable way. Each character falls at her feet and professes their undying love and devotion in their first moments of meeting (insert eyeroll). The FMC finds this great desire with every male creature she encounters and acts on that often, which was both unrealistic but enjoyable. All the "men" are totally cool with sharing her.
I never could imagine that monster porn would be exciting, but I do appreciate the authors creativity in their male anatomy. The spice was abundant and creative. The characters fondle each other at the most inopportune times, making the story unrealistic, but it's a story about monsters, after all.
Maybe it was being stuck in a reading rut, but I gave this book a chance when I otherwise wouldn't have. It definitely isn't one I would reread or recommend but it wasn't all bad. It's one you have to go into with low expectations and a forgiving threshold for cringe. If you can do that you might enjoy it.

I Give this Book a 4.5/5 Star Rating, Listing as High 4.

HEA(?): YES
Relationship Type: MFMMMMM
M/M(?): Nope.
Romance: 4/5
Heat: 4.5/5
Pacing: Mid, this is a book you want to Savor and not read fast, but enjoy every detail.
Drama: 4/5
Suspense: 4/5
Dark(?): Not to me no.

This book was captivating and fascinating, didn’t expect all the male love interest and I was so thrilled to see such a large harem, it’s been a long time since I’ve read one this big 😆
This universe, I can’t tell you how much I’m a sucker for this type, with women in this bookverse having no value, and then one of them having their story told. Cora gets such a fantastic and well deserved HEA with a great Reverse Harem. I hope that Cora’s sister will get a book, to me there was an open ending for her.

Should prolly have dnf this but I tried to push through. She was such a special snowflake who was the most important. Insta love and Insta lust and Insta everything. Things always seemed to magically work out for them and she magically saves the day by being the best. I was not a fan

Whoa. 🥹🫠🥰
This book was so much better than I expected it to be.
The plot was so cool. With the magic, and the evil king, and the monsters, and the quest they go on to restore everything to its former glory... So freaking good.

The sex was so fucking hot. Monster peen for days. Just. 6 Very different Monster peen.😏
And the dirty talk was fucking fire.

The relationships were so sweet and loving and just, they took care of each other in such a cute way sometimes. I loved the playfulness and the banter and just the protective possessive way they all loved each other. (The men in brotherly ways. They weren’t All together together. There’s no MM in this one.)

I will say though, that I think we could have had a couple more chapters and this would’ve been the perfect book, to me.
First off: Krug and Razcorr don’t get POV chapters like all the other guys do, and I was looking forward to being in their heads.
Then Razcorr himself didn’t get much time at all.
We meet him at the very end and then don’t spend hardly any time with him. All the other guys get their individual sex scenes with Cora, except him. And I was just missing that one on one connection.

Other than that I absolutely loved this book.
That ending was so freaking sweet.
I loved all the gifts she got her men.
So personal, and perfect, and all of their reactions were just so freaking adorable.

I’m really hoping there’s gonna be a companion book that comes out sometime with ‘Someone’ I have a suspicion didn’t actually die. No spoilers, just..
Iykyk…🫣🤫😉
They deserve a HEA, and I wanna see them get it.
Plus I’m just not ready to give this world up yet. I wanna see more of it.

PS. If you have any sensitivity to suicide or abuse of any kind I would be cautious or even just skip this one..there were some very harrowing parts to this book, especially the beginning and the ending.

“You really have a thing for monsters, don’t you, little human? Can’t say I blame you. Monsters do it better.”

This book delves into your deepest, darkest, hottest fantasies.. fantasies you never even knew you had or wished for.. monsters and Stilma’s you never knew you needed 🤣🥵 if you know, you know!! It had me enraptured from start to finish. I thought the world building and story line were great and so refreshing!! you can really picture and imagine the 3 fractured lands and all the characters. I hung from every line like a puppet so excited to see where this dark, twisted world of humans vs monsters would take us, as expected it didn’t disappoint. Cora is barely 20 years old when she volunteers as tribute in her sisters place to be the ultimate sacrifice.

“We leave you alone for two seconds, and you almost die and make a new friend, Goldie. You are a busy little human.”

So, I wrote a full on paragraph for each of the guys (monsters)… but then I realised I want you all to go into this blind to have the same experience I did… I don’t want to give anything away so you can have the same surprises I did along the way 😜 and trust me, there’s ALOT of surprises along the way..😂🥵 let me tell you, each and every monster is unique in his own way and I’m all here for it 🔥seriously, it’s like a candy shop down there, you don’t know what you’re going to get but just know you’ll love each and everyone 😂🔥 actually, I just HAVE to say, my favourite is Bracken 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🤐🤐 that is all 🤫 enjoy!!! 🫠

“Wait, no, bad Cora. Stop thinking about monster dick, it’s seriously becoming a problem.” Pahaha don’t worry Cora, we are all here for it 😂😂😂

I honestly never thought monster romance would be my thing, but here I am with another of Katie’s books, giving it five stars and adding a new trope to my list! And yet another never ending list of kinks… this kink list is almost as long as my TBR list 🫣🫠🥵🤣

This book won’t be for everyone, you have to put your “morals” aside and open up to what this book really is… FANTASY!! Why not marvel in it? 🖤

Captivating and very hot!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Story 5/5
Narration 5/5

I enjoyed Fractured Shadows by K.A Knight and Kendra Moreno, very much!
I rarely read Romance, because I usually don’t find this genre satisfying, for my tastes. But, It isn’t the case with this book.
I liked the characters development, the plot and all the steamy moments. This Reverse Harem story is very good in my opinion.
I highly recommend it, if you enjoy tales with magic, and sexy monsters in love with a smart courageous woman. I didn’t want Cora’s adventures to end.
I can’t wait to read the second book of the Shadow Kingdom series.

Honestly just another masterpiece. Both these authors write stories about women who are the epitome of take no shit. I would read anything from them.

A lot of the books feature characters who have had really hard lives but they don't let it break them. Instead, they use it and let it fuel them to take back their power and mess some shit up 😅. Cora is no exception to this. Her life was horrible. She never let it overwhelm her, though, and just waited until it was her time to fight back. When she was finally able to fight back man did she wreck some stuff lol.

What's there to say about her delicious monsters? They're obsessed with her and utterly devoted. That basically makes them perfect 😌. They all have their own pasts and traumas, some being worse than others. They're all able to come together as a family to rely on one another to grow and heal and it makes the relationship that much better to read. I really like when you can just feel the love.

Yes the spice is most definitely a 🤌🤌🤌 moment but it wasn't even the best part for me. Trust me, it was fantastic, but the best was the growth. The growth of the characters and the love they have for each other. It's all so dynamic and while they're flawed they never hide from them. They know exactly who they are and I love them all for it.

My only real complaint, and what kept me from giving it a full five stars, was the pacing. Pacing is always a huge thing for me. It felt like a lot of buildup but then everything happened so quickly at the end that I would have liked just a bit more to be fleshed out there. Other than that it was ✨️perfection✨️

Not the cup of tea that I’m made to drink from. I think that if it had been written better and was just a little bit more subtle, I would have made it further than the introduction of the Minotaur and the snake man. That’s where I DNFed tho. I am quite happily putting this book down.

This FMC was fine at first. Really leaning into that strong independent woman trope and then…. Just…. Decided she was the baddest b in the world because she made deals with monsters. Cora turned out to be a pretty whiny and melodramatic character that WOULDNT SHUT UP ABOUT HOW POWERFUL SHE WAS. The writing style also wasn’t my fav and there were some cringey moments throughout - see kindle notes lol.

If I could go back in time and smack myself, I would.

Seriously, if you loved this book, I’m so glad that you did. I hope that everyone enjoys the books that they read and I hope that they have fun, that’s the most important part. Unfortunately for me, this was not the case.

I am a firm believer that a book does not have to be good for me to enjoy it. There are plenty of awful books that I have read that I ate right up because I enjoyed them. Reading can be fun whether the book is good or not! This wasn’t fun nor good.

The reviews for this book are astonishingly positive, but to each their own I guess. I’d like to consider myself seasoned when it comes to different types of books, but never have I read something so cringey in my life. Maybe there’s a sub-genre for books like this.

Annoying FMC? Check.
Wattpad storyline? Check.
Lacking dialogue? Check.
Insta-love with monsters who use to hate each other but are now OK banging the same chick? Check x6

Did I push through this book solely for the purpose of adding it to my reading goal? Yes. Did I think the book was well thought out? No. Did I enjoy it? For a cumulative 5 pages.

I don’t expect fantasy/romance novels to be realistic, but I’d like it to be believable. How long was she in the monster land for? It felt like days. Maybe because it WAS. And all of a sudden the ✨magic✨ she has in her veins that she DIDN’T know existed is mastered within like a week. Come onnnn….

Gotta be honest, tentacle weenier and snake man were the highlights of this book. Bracken was written as comedic relief because the rest of it was like running a marathon stark naked on broken glass. Sorry, that’s a bit much. Can you tell I really enjoyed this book?

Insert the most cringe book I’ve read in ages.

The female lead keeps on acting as if she’s so quirky. The blurb sounded promising but the plot is girl volunteers as sacrifice to save her sister (she brings it up constantly) and stumbles through the border trying to not immediately die. There she meets and collects men like Pokémon meanwhile she still constantly brings up how in her old life every single living male was abusive to women. Her harem grows as she just exists and wanders around trying to find a place to live. The reason why her harem grows? Because her pussy and untapped magic smells sweet.

The authors need lessons in consent and dealing with trauma. Bc here as long as the female lead is fine with it it’s all good. You just manipulated her into sex bc she thought you were gonna die? Silly you scared me 🤭 that’s not the right reaction but okay. Orc gets sent into a panic attack? Female lead oh so fearlessly goes up to him kisses him and sings to him and says some cringe bc along the lines of “stay with me you’re free” so he can realize he’s not about to be raped. Really the cringiest shit from this lady. 50% in and she’s just realizing she’s the weak link between all these 7ft tall creatures. Also she keeps on referring to them as “my monsters” ma’am they’re not property and the best way to describe it is harem or friends with benefits. The monsters in this world used to be enslaved as property and she’s just casually like mmm my monsters handled the attacking hoards.

The queens are back together again and this time they brought us some delicious monster smutt that will bring out fantasies you never realized you had.

This book had a lot to unpack. I love the “I’ll take her place” trope. Cora’s sister is chosen to participate in “the hunt” and Cora doesnt hesitate to take her place instead.

During “The Hunt” we get to meet our down right sexy monster and boy do we meet alot🥵 each monster is unique (and I really mean unique 😮‍💨💦) and brings out a different part of Cora.

Overall the book is phenomenal, action packed and down right smutty. It was super easy to lose yourself in the amazing world building. I love Cora and all her monsters. They formed such a strong bond with each other. I really hope the authors decide to explore this world more! Thank you so much for the ARC!

This book is what happens when I purchase Kindle Unlimited on a whim for $0.99 for three months and then choose a book at random.

Was it good? No, but did I enjoy it... yeah kinda 😂 Did I know what I was getting myself into when I started this book? Definitely not. I should really look more into tags before I read fantasy romance lol

But anyways! Plus five point for how she collections new scary monsters to hook up with like they're spicy pokemon like wow what a skill
Minus a million points for basically everything else

KA Knight has this amazing ability to create the most immersive standalone stories that suck you in and keep you engaged the entire time. The pacing was great, the spice was plentiful and so hot, and the heroes were the epitome of sour patch kids. I love, love, loved this book! After heroine Cora pulls a Katniss move and volunteers herself up as tribute, she’s quite literally thrown to the monsters. Hoping to give her sister a chance at life she willingly walks into this new world totally expecting to die. But rather than die she puts on a brave face and starts gathering a harem aka monsters all in hopes she can return home and save the realms. Throughout the course of the book she befriends and not too long after mates with a dark Fae, a Minotaur, a snake man, a gargoyle, an orc and a even a kraken. It helps that once she crossed into their realm some long lost magic inside of her begins to make itself known. As she travels to the opposite of the monster realm on her very own LOTR quest she hones her skills in hopes she can use her magic to save the day and reunite their peoples. She’s also highly motivated by wanting to change her realm and free the women from their enslavement and belittlement. I enjoyed the banter between Cora and her guys especially in the beginning when she’s basically being stalked by a couple of them as prey. Cora may be a simple human but she’s stubborn as hell and now with magic to back her up the confident side of her comes out to play and it’s not pretty for those in her way. The book does wrap up in a HEA but there is a loose and dangling thread there that I’m wondering if was possibly done on purpose for another character to have a story?! Guess we’ll have to wait and see!

Honestly I was a little disappointed in this, it wasn't a bad read, but I just found I wasn't captivated by it. I honestly found I was struggling to read it were usually I can't put a book down. It's definitely not my favourite book she / they have written.

In saying that I loved were they were trying to go with this book, the characters were great (but I mean really did she need 6)?

I feel like it should have stopped with the Kraken but that's just my opinion.

I love a good monster book but I honestly preferred Monstrous Lies as a monster book to this 🤷🏼‍♀️

I got a paperback of this because I love this author's book and I wanted to read some in paperback. This was really good. RH, monsters, kinky smut, really solid plot, great backstory, history, development and world building. I loved each of the guys. They were so different but perfect for Cora. It seemed fast paced but settled and flowed smoothly. I loved the multiple POVs. That epilogue was absolutely fitting.

“I won’t be a gift wrapped in a pretty bow for the monsters. I won’t accept my fate. I won’t go down without a fight…”

In order to save her sister, Cora volunteers to be this years hunt and is sent into the Dead Lands where the monsters reside. While trying to survive, she meets 6 different monsters who offer to help her, for a price of course. What follows next is a journey none of them saw coming filled with danger, adventure, and lots of steamy good times.

“Wait, no, bad Cora. Stop thinking about monster dick, it’s seriously becoming a problem.”

“They are fighting over me, but they are going to have to learn to share, because this is my life and no one makes decisions for me, not anymore.”

This magical monster romance is unlike any I’ve read before. Cora is such a strong FMC and I love how she won’t go down without a fight. She truly is a survivor! This story has just about any and every kind of monster you could possibly want! The spicy scenes are so hot 🔥🔥 and well written as they always are with these two authors!

“You’re going to come for him. You’re going to let him feel you explode around his cock, and then I’m going to slide inside of you alongside him, and you’ll take it, Goldie. You’ll take every inch we have, and then we are going to fuck you so you never forget that you are ours. Not just his, ours.”

This book is written like a fanfic, the plot has potential but it’s so childish. How fortunate that Emelyn just talks to Cora through her magic 🤪

Besides the smut, it just fells like a story a 14yo would have written if given a writing assignment. No depth at all.

Almost all the guys have me the ick, besides the Kraken guy and the fey. They all talk like they are 22 instead of a thousand years old (she’s like 20 btw).
I’m familiar with monster smut and I usually love it but the naga guy is just ewwww to me so Nagas now go to my “no no” list.

Cora “sacrifices” herself for her sister just because she can apparently. I get the idea of the FMC being selfless and shit but it’s not developed at all so it just felt like a pick-me. We get it, she’s just better than everybody else.

I understand that the goal was to do a standalone, and for that I’m grateful because sometimes 6 books in a row are just too much, but having a more intricate story, with more background would have made for a far better reading experience.

It fell flat and just felt like another mediocre story.

Chaotic in the best way, I had so much fun with this crew. The storyline was bananas and it needed another proofread but honestly the vibes were solid and who doesn’t love a book with six different monsters and six different 🍆????

The world is split into three lands, The Dead Lands, the Gilded Lands, and Cora's home, the Shadow Lands. The King and wealthy are separated from the monsters by the unfortunate souls existing in the Shadows. The women have no rights and the men are cruel. It's a half-life at best and only getting worse. The darkness is encroaching. The only barrier is a wall of magic contained by barbed vines. Each year one girl from the Shadow Lands is sacrificed for the hunt to appease the monsters for another year. This year Cora's beloved sister is chosen but the monsters won't get their chance to feed on her. This year, there's a volunteer. This year the hunt will be different. This year, the time has come to right the wrongs of the past.

Think Hunger Games meets the Monsters of Myth. Cora is the perfect heroine, intelligent, protective, loyal, courageous, and with a strong sense of right and wrong. She volunteers for certain death out of love for her sister. The first true sacrifice. Her monsters are each the finest of their kind, leaders to be admired. But they have lost hope. As Cora wins each one over, she brings them hope. She gives them a reason to fight their darkness. This is an odyssey. A reverse harem odyssey, so there's plenty of steam to accompany the danger. It's a fun adventure. There's a clear good guy versus bad guy plot line, so it's easy to get caught up. There are plenty of politics, history, and an epic romance. Still, this author seems to be on a monster kick, and I hope it ends soon. I have made it clear in all of my reviews; I am not a monster romance lover. Did I enjoy this story? Yes. Would I have enjoyed it even more without tails, fangs, scales, horns, hoofs, and wings? Absolutely.
