David Andrew Gemmell was a bestselling British author of heroic fantasy. A former journalist and newspaper editor, Gemmell had his first work of fiction published in 1984. He went on to write over thirty novels. Best known for his debut, Legend, Gemmell's works display violence, yet also explores themes in honour, loyalty and redemption. With over one million copies sold, his work continues to sell worldwide.
Wolf in Shadow is David Gemmell's most effective exploration of the persistent western influence found in much of his work. This is the story of post-apocalyptic gunslinger Jon Shannow, dubbed the Jerusalem Man due to his obsessive quest for the now fabled biblical city where he imagines he will find peace after a lifetime of violence, Shannow ranges across a future earth where geological upheaval has reversed the position of the world's oceans. Shannow is a gun for hire isolated by his fearsome abilities with the antique six-shooters he carries, cleansing settlements of marauding outlaws before being politely asked to move on. However, the advent of the Hellborn, an army of Satan-worshippers intent on conquest and human sacrifice, places Shannow at the forefront in the war of salvation, rediscovering his humanity in the process. Distinguished by a wonderfully sombre ending, Wolf in Shadow is, in my opinion, Gemmell's finest book. The sequels, The Last Guardian and Bloodstone, are therefore something of a disappointment, though still thoroughly readable and enjoyable in their own right, they inevitably pale in comparison to the brilliance of their forebear.
A very well-told series taking an interestingly different slant from all the sub-Tolkein dross. Gemmell was a great storyteller, and this is one of his best. Along with Legend, the Jerusalem Man is something I always return to.
I know a lot of people love these but I personally think they are the weakest Gemmell books I have read. The setting is different but I think the apocalyptic wasteland didn’t appeal to me but can see why many would like it. I feel like the secondary characters were not as strong as other books and it reads about like Christian fiction with the many references to the Bible (one of the few remaining books left in this world). There were some interesting things done with Atlantis in the second book and Gemmell is one of my favorite authors so his talent can still be found.
This trilogy became my Bible, I read it every year, great plot, twists, and brilliant character development. Would love to see this done as a series like ‘Game of Thrones’.
This is nothing like David Gemmells usual books but still a very good read. I have completed the trilogy and I have to say that although this is very different to David Gemmells usual books i thoroughly enjoyed it. Some very interesting twists and great Gemmell style characters. I read The Complete Chronicles of the Jerusalem manThe Complete Chronicles of the Jerusalem Manone after the other.
This is an Omnibus edition that contains all 5 books in the Stones of Power series.
I read this collection together in this omnibus. I don't feel like the these books are on par with Gemmell's other works. For complete reviews, look at the individual books in the series.
