"Feel good fiction [is] at its finest" (Susan Wiggs) in this New York Times bestselling author's new series, where a family looks to make a fresh start —but it’s never easy to leave the past behind.
Widowed young, Genevieve Prentice dedicated her life to raising her four children. Now that they’re all grown and scattered to the wind, Genevieve is ready for a change. In a flash of inspiration, she puts her home on the market and heads to Lake in the Clouds, Colorado, to renovate a rustic waterfront lodge with her sister. But just as they begin, Genevieve gets a surprising visitor—her eldest son.
Jake Prentice built a career out of being dependable, one that left him perennially stressed and overworked. Finally heeding his mother’s words of wisdom, he’s quit his job and is ready to find out what truly makes him happy. And now, as he stands surrounded by open sky and fresh, pine-scented air, he’s got no regrets . . . until former colleague Tess Crenshaw appears at the lake, forcing him to reassess what—and who—he really wants.

The Getaway by Emily March is a 2022 Forever publication.
A great start to a new series!
This is March’s first foray into pure ‘women’s fiction’ and of course, she aced it. I have always thought her books could lean that way, though they’d more often be categorized as contemporary romance- but this one has a very nice balance of mature characters and younger couples. Genevieve is quite recognizable as a woman who devoted her life to raising her children, only to find that as adults they are all embroiled in their own personal dramas now, and have for all intents and purposes, shut her out.
So, it’s time to shake some things up! When Genevieve makes the stunning announcement that she’s starting a new life, her children are floored- but she also issues a unique challenge for her son, Jake- which sends him on his own soul-searching mission…
I loved Genevieve and her sister, Helen, and could really relate to the conversations they had and agreed with a lot their musings. I enjoyed Jake and Tess’s journey- as individuals and as a couple. The family drama is absorbing, and the scenery and location seems so cathartic- and is the perfect place for this new series to develop.
Overall, the series set-up was exceptional- I’m looking forward to more "Prentice family" drama and adventure!
The Getaway by Emily March Lake in the Clouds series #1. Women’s fiction. Contemporary with family, siblings and a touch of romance. Minor spinoff of the Eternity Springs series but it dies not need to be read prior to this. Genevieve dedicated herself to raising her family without working outside. She values family above all else. Her children are all adults and not getting along. She makes a startling announcement that she is selling the house and that she expects her eldest, Jake, to figure out who he is. This story follows two main paths: Genevieve decides to purchase and renovate a hotel while remaining connected to family and Jake as he takes assessment of his life and family relationships and a love interest.
I really liked that Jake isn’t overconfident. He’s going through life changes and that’s thrown him a bit off his game. He expresses that exactly to Tess. It was such a feel good and heartfelt moment. Zero heat in this one as it is classified as Women’s fiction. All the frisky antics are behind closed doors. I’m sure it took Genevieve a huge amount of strength to walk away from her arguing children. I’m not sure how I feel about that piece of the storyline but I will say that by the end I was happy as all the pieces came together in a satisfying finish.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share.
The Getaway, by Emily March (5 HUGE ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) Available September 6th!
I absolutely love The Getaway by Emily March. This is the first book in the Lake in the Clouds series. The story has me hooked and I can't wait to find out what happens to this adorable family in book #2.
The Getaway follows the Prentice family as they deal with real-life situations and emotions that will capture your heart. Among these are love, grief, sibling rivalry, coming of age, letting go and romance. Emily March writes the Prentice family saga with grace and laugh out loud humor. Through the author's descriptive writing I was able to picture each of the characters and felt like I was part of the family.
The Getaway is New York Times, USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestselling author Emily March's fortieth book. The author uses her own family experiences and heartfelt emotions to add sweet personal touches to the novel. I was captivated by this book and would give it ten stars if I could.
Thank you Emily March, Hachette Book Group, and Read Forever Publishing for allowing me to review The Getaway. I was delighted to receive a complimentary copy in the mail.
The Getaway by Emily March is her first book in her new Lake In The Clouds series. And I’m looking forward to the following books in the series very much. The Getaway set up the series when Genevieve and Helen decide to move to Lake In The Clouds in Colorado.
After a devastating accident, Genevieve Prentice is widowed at a young age with four young children to raise on her own. After years of dedicating her life to her children, Genevieve realizes that she hasn’t done anything for herself and as her grown children now all have lives of their own, she realized it’s now time to find out what she wants.
Genevieve decides to invest in a lodge with her sister in Lake in the Clouds, a small mountain town in Colorado. Her children are shocked to realize that she sold her house and most of her things to move and change her life. Genevieve and her sister, Helen loves the little mountain town and quickly became involved in the town’s activities. They are both surprised when Jake Prentice shows up in one of the cabins at the lodge. And that he has quit his job.
I loved this book and now I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series. I love the descriptions of Lake In the Clouds as it’s a place I would enjoy living. The author has set this book in a quirky, small town in the mountains, and it’s full of characters that I’m anxious to meet again in subsequent books.
I enjoyed Genivive and Helen very much and loved their courage to take on the lodge and get to know a new town. Jake was also a wonderful character, as the oldest of Genivive’s children, he has taken on extra responsibility since the day his dad died when he was fifteen years old, and still believes he’s the leader of the family.
The romance was sweet and closed door. I found both Jake and Tess to balance out each other's personalities, and I liked that they were very honest with each other.
I highly recommend The Getaway to anyone who enjoys women’s fiction. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was my first book by Emily March and definitely won't be my last. I noticed the description of the book says "Lake In The Clouds #1" and so I am VERY excited for a second book. I look forward to seeing what the Prentice family is up to next.
I LOVED these characters so, so much! They were so relatable! Well developed and extremely real, facing true to life situations that had me feeling many emotions. I was hooked by the authors writing style and the reality in which she portrayed family. Family isn't always perfect. Sometimes things get messy, and I appreciated the fact the author didn't shy away from that.
This was a very enjoyable read and one that I highly recommend!
Huge thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the gifted copy!
I'm trying to get better at content warnings and so only continue reading it you are okay with minor spoilers. C/W: physical abuse, miscarriage, mentions of cancer, heart attack.
The Getaway is a wholesome, feel-good women's fiction/ family drama novel about a mother struggling to come to terms with her changing family, and a son at a crossroads in his life, ready for a change.
Full transparency: I don't think I was the right audience for this one. It felt a bit too "Hallmarky" for my tastes? But judging by these ratings, that's probably more of a personal preferences thing.
The premise was interesting, and I could definitely relate to Gen and her role as the family matriarch. Yet I found some of the dialogue to be a bit contrived. What grown man says "Turdhead"? 🤪😂 Again, I think maybe I was just the wrong fit for this one. It was a little too wholesome and "Leave it to Beaver" for me.
But definitely don't let my review turn you away from giving this a shot. You might love it like so many others! 💕
Thank you @readforeverpub for my gifted finished copy in exchange for my honest review.
I love stories with characters I can connect with, a little romance and lots of drama and you get it all in The Getaway. This is one you will want on your to be read stack. 4 stars from me. I recommend this one. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required, and all views expressed are our own.
This was such a good book. It was a book I had no idea I needed. I felt like it gave me a bit of clarity & insight being a mom of 5. Ups & downs are part of life. And even your grown children can twist the heart strings. And how you must let them make there own path. Even if you disagree.
I’m a big fan of this author and this did not disappoint. This was truly a story that literally worms it’s way into your heart. It has a huge forgiving heart like a mom. It’s about love…a mothers, a siblings, and romantic. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this family.
I really enjoyed this book. Genevieve is the mother of four adult children who haven’t been getting along for the past few years. Family is everything to her and when her children bail on her for Thanksgiving and Christmas she has an epiphany – it’s time to make a life change. She decides to almost everything she has known to move with her sister Helen to Lake in the Clouds, Colorado to renovate a waterfront lodge and cabins.
Jake is Genevieve’s eldest son and a successful managing director for an architecture, planning and design firm. Faced with having to lay off a large number of the firm’s staff for the second time in a few months, he also feels the need to make a change in his life. He quits his job and heads to visit his Mom and Aunt in Lake in the Clouds to clear his head. Soon after, he decides to ask out Tess, a former colleague and someone he can’t stop thinking about.
I really enjoy stories with older protagonists and Genevieve’s story is particularly compelling. Her transition into a new life has her doing things that are for herself and not for her family. She and her sister take a trip they had talked about since they were kids. It was nice to see this level of personal growth from someone middle-aged.
There is a romance that develops between Jake and Tess which highlights each of us learning to find out what really is most important in life. I enjoyed the dating element in this storyline including the use of a castle. The majestic nature described in Lake in the Clouds provided wonderful imagery.
The Getaway is a lovely story that has me wanting to read more about this family. I recommend this book to those that enjoy fiction about family, women’s fiction or romance. I look forward to reading the second book in the series when it becomes available.
Thank you to Forever for the ARC of this book in exchange for this honest review.
The Getaway is a heartwarming, compelling tale that takes you on a journey to Lake in the Clouds, Colorado, and into the lives of the middle-aged widow and mother of four, Genevieve and her oldest, overworked, most serious son Jake, as they discover together the importance of taking chances, accepting change, embracing the future and finding contentment.
The prose is light and amusing. The characters are complex, authentic, and supportive. And the plot is a beguiling tale about life, loss, family, determination, kindness, forgiveness, parenthood, tough love, self-discovery, happiness, romance, and the importance of moving on.
Overall, The Getaway is a tender, uplifting, nostalgic tale by March, complete with strong, endearing characters, a touching storyline, and an insightful look into the complex, unbreakable ties that bind us as family.
Thank you to Forever & Grand Central Publishing for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
In this lovely story by Emily March readers are treated to the first book in a new series. We meet Genevieve Prentice and her four adult children. As the story begins, it is about to be the Thanksgiving holiday and Genevieve discovers that her two sons will not be present. Not only does she then call the holiday off altogether, she has an epiphany and changes her life in a completely different direction.
Genevieve is not the only one that makes a change. In fact, her oldest son Jake finds his life is not going in the direction that is bringing him joy. In fact, a business decision has him doubting whether or not he is happy in his job and before long he ends up quitting his job and changing his life as well. Before Jake left his job, one of his responsibilities was to lay off quite a few employees, and this would include Tess Crenshaw. Jake has always been drawn to Tess, but because he was her boss's boss, he knew that they could not even act on any attraction they shared.
One of the things Genevieve does is she buys a property in Lake in the Clouds, Colorado. Jake soon shows up there, and Tess does as well, albeit separately. So the story gives us the perspective of each of these three characters, Genevieve, Jake and Tess.
As the story develops, one thing is made clear. No one is really happy in life right now. Genevieve has been a widow for two decades, and her role of matriarch has ended up making her unhappy, mostly due to the actions of her children. Not only do we see the direction that Genevieve goes in, we learn more of why Jake made such a drastic change in his life. Tess’s history is also part of the story that is developing especially now that she is being open to seeing where things are going with the shared attraction she has with Jake. Not only is this a very well-rounded story with characters that are easy to relate to, but it is the first book in a new series. I cannot wait to see more of the Prentice family and to see their stories develop.
Many thanks to Forever and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
This is one of those books that is so hard to review and I can't quite place my finger on why. The Prentice family, essentially, is made up of Genevieve (Mom), her four adult children, and her sister Helen. Genevieve, the matriarch, is very holiday oriented and her children are all scared to tell her they can't attend this or that event -whichever "holiday" or Thursday is this week. I think the children had to live up to extremely high expectations set by their mother and maybe that is why this is difficult for me -I simply can not relate.
Jake, the oldest child and son, stepped into the Dad role when his dad passed away when he was kid and basically needs to find his way in life. He works too much, fights with his brother too much, and is completely overwhelmed with life in general. He takes his moms advice, to find himself, and ends up in Colorado. I really enjoyed Jake's story line and his characters progression throughout!
The author did give us bits and pieces of the other siblings in this novel but not as in depth as Jake. Basically all the siblings are fighting and Genevieve wants them all to figure their crap out and get along. At times I felt like there was a lot going on -maybe even too much in the last 1/4. There were a lot of heavy hitting topics sprinkled in here and there that made me wonder, 'is this necessary?'
I believe this is the start of a new series and I'm definitely curious to see what or who book 2 will be about because I feel like the story wrapped up in the end. Guess I'll have to wait and see!
TW: physical abuse, mentions of cancer, miscarriage by force
This was a really good book. It had some ups and downs but the family stayed together and strong. This wasn't my first book I have read by Emily March and it won't be my last. I'm grateful that netgalley and the publishers let me read this in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed The getaway by Emily March and I found myself laughing out loud at some of Genevieve’s antics. She was a hoot! Looking forward to the sequel. Thanks to NetGalley for this copy. It’s still Read Now and is already out in publication as of my review on February 25, 2024.
Boy...this family is a hot mess at the start. I don't blame Genevieve one bit for going a bit over the top with the January dinner with her kids. I think Genevieve needed to lay down what she thought, her kids needed to hear the hard truth and get treated like kids again and too see their mom so blazing mad.
I loved seeing Genevieve, along with Helen, build their new lives in CO. It was also fun to see all the kids slowly start to trickle to CO. First Jake, mostly because he was at lost ends. I liked how Genevieve quickly made up a trip to get away from him. I loved how Jake took advantage of Momma being gone and started something with Tess. The two of them were great and I loved that they allowed themselves to be a bit vulnerable to the other. By sharing so much it helped as all of the siblings showed up, due to one of them being in trouble. While this trouble was bad, it did one good thing, made the family have a united front to fight what was coming after one of their own.
I liked how this one ended, loved that Tess set Jake free, he needed that time, but the big 4th of July shindig was perfect. All the family together again and learning to be friends and family after the hard times, while adding new people to the mix.

BOOK QUOTE: "Lesson number one of successful adulting. A person grows up his entire life." — The Getaway | Emily March
Excellent read by Emily March. The family dynamics of this book is wonderful written. She starts off with Genevieve and Helen, two sisters, and then brings in Geneviev's four children, who have broken their mother's heart by not attending Thanksgiving dinner. So, Mom decides that if they won't come home for the holidays, they won't have a home to come home to. She puts the house up for sale and moves to Colorado with Helen and they buy a rustic resort in Lake on the Clouds. What happens next is some of the best reading you will have in learning why her children are at odds with one another and when Jake, the oldest turns up, Mom tells him that she and his aunt Helen are going on their dream trip to see home of "The Sound of Music" in Austria. Jake is left on his own and then he has a grand idea to get in touch with Texx Crenshaw he once worked with and he does not realize just how much she is going to change his life.
In reading this book, so much of my own family came to mind. I am sure anyone who reads this book will feel the same. I love Genevieve and Helen. They are both strong women. Genevieve was left a widow young and Helen married and divorced a few times. She has a great career as a lawyer and the two sisters have always been close. You will get to know Gen's four children and learn more about their family. You will cheer them on, you will shed a few tears and you will get a little angry at some of the happenings, but you Love, Love this book. You will also visit with ever wonderful Celeste Blessing and Eternity Spring too. I can't wait to see what Emily March comes up with in the continuing saga of the Prentice family and Lake in The Clouds.... Well done Emily March.
I loved Emily March’s Eternity Springs series and her new series, Lake in the Clouds is sure to become a favorite of mine also. The same warm, loving, accepting theme is throughout this book.
This is the story of Genevieve, who was widowed young and raised her 4 children basically alone. Her close knit family was broken into pieces 3 years ago and she decides that for once in her life, she needs to let go and focus on herself. It is a great plot and I am sure so many women feel this desire also.
Her oldest son, Jake, put the burden of stepping into his absent father’s shoes upon himself early on and has a difficult time letting go of that role. When he is told that role was never his to assume and that he is not to continue, he is confused who he is. The road to self-discovery is often rocky and both Genevieve and Jake take the path head-on in this wonderful book.
The author wrote an excellent story full of a mother’s love, sibling disagreements, beautiful scenery, forgiveness, and gratefulness. With a touch of Celeste Blessing’s healing touch, hearts are healed, just as in the Eternity Springs series.
A huge thank you Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for giving me the immense pleasure of reading the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.
This book is the first in a new series featuring the Prentice Family. The matriarch Genevieve is a traditional sort of woman who has place settings and decorations and goes all out for the holidays trying to hold on tight to tradition and her family. After all of her 4 children fail to show up for Thanksgiving she decides it is time to let go, and she gives up all she knows to move to Colorado to be with her sister. The book focuses on Genevieve and her journey, and the oldest child Jake Prentice and his journey. There is also a major feud between the siblings having to do with an inheritance that is tearing this family apart. The characters in this book were great, and I am so excited that this is a series meaning hopefully each of the 4 siblings will get their own book and we’ll get to visit this family over and over again. I’d love to see Helen get her own book too! I received an ARC from netgalley and forever and this is my honest review.
Widow Genevieve Prentice has always put her family first. Now it seems that her family are too busy to come for holidays or family dinners. She decides it is her time and sells her house and heads to Lake in the Clouds, Colorado to renovate a lodge with her sister. Her son Jake turns up after quitting his job and wanting to find himself. As they work together mother and son reconnect and learn about themselves and what family really means!
Thanks to Emily March and Forever(Grand Central Publishing) for the book!
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Genevieve is ready firca change. After raising 4 kids, she decides to sell her dream hone and move to Colorado with her sister. The place they purchased needs a little tlc. Her son Jake visits his mom in Colorado and is reflecting on his life. I enjoyed this book and getting to know Genevieve's family.
This is the first book in a new series by Emily March. This series is more womens fiction rather than romance. I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be watching for the rest of the books in this series. You just can’t go wrong with Emily March books
Family story about a woman, her sister, and her 4 adult children. Her sons are fighting. Her daughters speak to each other but not much to her, and she's tired of all the drama. She lays down the law to them on her way out of town to move to Colorado with her sister and buy and fix up a mountain resort. This is the first several chapters. The rest is about how they fix things. It's a good read and I liked it a lot.
The Getaway by Emily March is about a family trying to move forward after an incident has torn them apart. Genevieve Prentice was unexpectedly widowed at a young age. She has dedicated her life to raising and nurturing her four children. They were always the center of her world. Her kids are now all grown up and have other other obligations than spending the holidays with their overbearing mother.
Genevieve is ready for a change and decides to put her beloved home on the market. She decides to head to Lake in the Clouds, Colorado with her sister. Together they plan to turn a rustic waterfront lodge into a B&B. Genevieve and her sister plan to rehabilitate the old lodge to make it ready for guests. As they begin to work on the lodge, Genevieve is shocked when her older son, Jake, makes an unexpected visit to the lodge.
Jake Prentice is known to be the dependable one in the family. He has stepped up as the father figure to take care of the other siblings after his father’s passing. He is good at his job as a consultant but he finds himself stressed out and constantly overworked. He decides to follow his mother’s path and quit his job, and use this new-found time to figure out what makes him happy.
This is the first time in a long time that Jake doesn’t have any demands or obligations he needs to work on. He decides to make the most of it. He likes being surrounded by the open sky and enjoying the fresh air while working with his hands. Jake feels that he can stay in limbo forever without having to make a decision on what he wants to do next. That is, until his former colleague Tess Crenshaw appears with an opportunity for a new job. It forces Jake to reassess who he is and what he wants to do.
I didn’t really care for this book. I thought it was very boring and it took a while to get to the main story. The author spent several pages describing Genevieve’s serving ware and other mundane things that didn’t really add any value to the story. I didn’t understand why the author felt it was important that the readers knew every single dish Genevieve owned. I didn’t like how the author hinted about a situation that tore the siblings apart but failed to go into detail. By the time we found out what happened, it was mostly bits and pieces and by then, I had lost interest in the story.
I found it hard to relate to any of the characters. Other than Jake and his mother, most of the characters barely had any involvement in the story until the very end of the book. I felt like the author spent a lot of time with details that didn’t really mean much but barely any time with the meat of the story. This was the first book in the series and it didn’t really grab my attention enough that I would continue reading.
I was gifted an early finished copy of this book by Forever Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’m willing to admit that I’m probably not the target demographic for this title, but even so, I think it could have been laid out better.
The plot was so incredibly slow with nothing to grab onto, and I never found myself liking any of the characters.
A benign lump and none of her children showing up for Thanksgiving throws Genevieve into a tailspin. Between then and January, she makes rash decisions, sells her house, and agrees to move to a different state with her sister to revamp a resort/lodge. It’s screaming: widowed mother having a midlife crisis. Did she not have any friends or hobbies?
Genevieve makes a huge dramatic spectacle of it all and wrangles her grown 30-year-old children to have dinner with her so that she can declare that it’s time for them all to have a role reversal in the family because she’s suddenly feeling unfulfilled in life and needs some separation from being a mother.
It’s fully giving “pick me” vibes and Genevieve was simultaneously acting like these two exact scenarios: 1. Those grandmothers that refuse for anyone to call them “grandmother” or anything in that realm for the innate fear of it prematurely aging them or it taking away their individuality. 2. When you have a dream of your significant other cheating on you but wake up to realize it was just in a dream, yet you spend the entire day mad at them and acting like they personally offended you when they didn’t do anything!!
Anyways, this was way too dramatic for me and I couldn’t empathize with how brash she was with her children, and therefore I really didn’t care what happened to her in her new journey of life and loving herself.
This book didn’t have a clear voice in knowing if it wanted to be a women’s fiction, family saga with the siblings, or a romance between the son and his former employee. As a result of that, the many character arcs didn’t feel fully realized, fleshed out, or well rounded. Tess's pov felt out of place and stuck out like a sore thumb in comparison to the Prentice family as a whole. There was also a morbid undertone when they all kept talking as if they were going to keel over and die the next day which was odd.
This is a new series called Lake in the Cloud featuring the Prentice family. There is widowed mom Genevieve and her four adult children. When no one shows up for Thanksgiving with excuses because her children are having issues due to an inheritance. She makes a radical change and moves from Texas to Colorado to e near her her sister Helen. The story also follows the oldest son Jake. This book has it all finding oneself, forgiveness and romance. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and can’t wait for the next one in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the E-ARC. This is my own opinion.
