First, I want to say that I'm not a big reader of Christan Fiction, it's just a genre that has never really interested me that much. However, I do love Lisa Wingate's Caroline series and I would love to read more books like that. So, I was a bit cautious when I saw that this book was Christan Fiction, and that has nothing to do with Christianity, I'm a Christian myself. I just can't stand reading books that are saccharine and preachy, no matter if it's Christian fiction or just any other kind of book.

So, now that I have gotten that said will I try to explain why this book worked for me on some levels and the things that I had problems with. I did like the book, in a way. I liked that it was easy to read and with a not too complicated story. However, that's also the problem with the book. I felt that the story and the characters lacked depth. It had potentials, but it didn't fulfill it. I found the story about the reclusive Hollywood starlet interesting, but I felt that it could have been given more room, being explored and explained more than it did. I wanted to know more about Charlotte Montgomery and her past. Perhaps some twist to the story. Something that would make the characters come to life.

Then we have the scandal that brought Lauren Summers to Santa Barbara. I don't know if it's just me having a problem with how a wardrobe accident could have her blackballed. I mean just look at the dresses the starlets have nowadays on the red carpet. Here, we have a young woman that is fighting with her parents about having a sexier image and then suddenly she is showing a little much for her parents taste. SCANDAL! This is not nipplegate we are dealing with, some undergarments are showing...

Alright, the complaining is over. I did enjoy reading the book, there were as I stated some things that bothered me, but I found myself enjoying part of the story, sure it was easy to spot the good and the bad girls in this book, but for the moment was it precisely what I needed to read. My favorite parts in the books are everything that has to do with Charlotte Montgomery, she was the one character I came to like the most. I could understand what she had gone through and I loved that she started to see that there are good people in the world.

This, in my opinion, is one of Kathryn Cushman's best work. My favorite will always be Waiting for Daybreak, but this one is next. It captured my interest from the start and I almost couldn't put it down. I had to, at times, because we had to eat and sleep, but that's about it.

Lauren Summers has an internship with a fashion house but her big moment on the red carpet is sabotaged and she is now blackballed in the fashion industry. She's offered a rundown cottage hours away, rent free, and a job with very little pay. The cottage sits near a cliff-side mansion which houses a former Hollywood ingenue from the forties and fifties. Lauren is approached by a reporter, claiming to want to help her, but actually wanting information on the former star. Lauren is unsure what to do, but is so desperate to restore her dreams. Will she fall prey once again or will she heed the wisdom which comes from above?

Kathryn Cushman has crafted such a wonderfully well written novel, complete with believable characters, an old mystery and a recluse who wants nothing to do with anyone. I was entranced the entire way through this novel. I enjoyed it immensely.

The spiritual theme was absolutely amazing, focusing on a story from the book of Joshua that I have always loved. We all would do well to heed the advice here. Kathryn has always had great spiritual themes in her books, which is one reason I love them as I do. This book will captivate readers, I am sure.

I really enjoyed this sweet story of two women - from different stratas of life and their slow walk toward each other. The look inside the fashion world was fun as well, but it was the references to the classic movie stars and their fashion that I adored.

I have a secret weakness for stories that weave in pieces of Old Hollywood. In her latest novel, Kathryn Cushman does that as she tells a story of unexpected friendship. Lauren Summers has her dream internship and a dress she worked on walking the red carpet. Then it all derails and she's left desperate for a job and place to stay. Next door is a reclusive woman who used to move in Hollywood's vaulted air.

This book is a sweet story of two women -- separated by generations and experience, but united by the ostracizing they've experienced. Lauren simply wants to be her friend, but Charlotte doesn't know how to respond. Add in a tabloid reporter, a host of secondary characters, and a serious fixer-upper, and it's the making of a story I enjoyed. There's very little romance. Instead, this is a story about figuring out how to move forward when events try to slap the life from us. It's a story about how even the most unlikely can form genuine friendships. And it's about setting aside our fears to be willing to embrace what God has in front of us.

This story is perfect for those who are looking for a contemporary story rich in relationships, without a focused romance.

I think Fading Starlight is the first novel I've read by Kathryn Cushman, but after loving this one, I definitely plan on reading more of her books!

I loved the characters and how romance was not a major plot point. It was really interesting to learn about Miss Montgomery and the reasons for why she acted the way she did. I felt kind of bad that she was so untrusting of people, but in some ways I can see why she would be.

I liked how the MC kept showing random acts of kindness and even when her temper got the best of her (because of how those acts were received), she tried to do better and not let her emotions control her actions.

All in all, this was a stellar contemporary read and I definitely recommend it. It had a little romance, some intrigue, and just all-around a good plot.

I loved reading Fading Starlight. I think I most enjoyed that this book focused mostly on Lauren's work and her working to overcome what happened to her, with very little romance. Charlotte was a fun character, though she had some struggles in her life too. She reminded me of Agnes Moorehead's character in Pollyanna, so that's kind of how I pictured her. I liked the ending a lot. All in all, this was a great read and I'd recommend it.

The high drama of an Old Hollywood mystery completely entranced me.

There was an early wardrobe malfunction (which exposed a teenager to a large in-person audience as well as an international on-television audience) that needed to be overcome.

Boy, did this story deliver!

Lauren’s fashion design was exquisite and a bright gem in this novel. Each dress was unique. The skills Lauren displayed were fantastic and detailed. And Miss Montgomery’s wardrobe was a dream!

The recluse aspect was artfully presented. I love that Miss Montgomery retained her flair for the dramatic through all the heartache she had endured. Her lack of trust was well written and made me weep for her—everyone should have a sense of security in their own neighborhood and beloved friends to cherish and share life with.

There was a touch of romance that served as an accessory to the attire of the core story. It was sweet and made me happy.

The biggest highlight for me was the beautiful, rich faith. With the focus being on loyalty, this aspect felt timely as I am focusing on faithfulness this year (2025). Perhaps that made Lauren’s faith journey mean even more to me… Either way, it was excellent and superbly delivered.

Once again, Mrs. Cushman’s master storytelling dazzled me. I definitely want more books, Mrs. C!

Favorite Quotes (and my commentary):

“Eric Hoffer once said that rudeness is the weak person’s imitation of strength.”
(They fail to see that they simply attempt to make everyone as miserable as they already are. A truly strong person will be jolly despite the rudeness thrust upon them by the weak.)

“Don’t let an old crank keep you from doing nice things. People who do nice things are getting fewer and farther between.”
(Yes!!! Always choose kindness even if the other person is a meany.)

“A ship is safe in harbor, but that is not what ships are built for.”
(God, help me to trust You to help me do what You created me to do—especially when it’s hard.)

“Help me to keep sailing out into the waves, and please point me in the right direction.”
(Absolutely! God, grant me this sort of bold courage.)

“Lauren crumpled in despair for only a few seconds. She thought back to her resolution, to her prayer. She would change herself in the way that she needed to change and leave the results up to God.”
(Such a beautiful reaction! I love this. Grieve the tough stuff, but limit that sorrow—God’s got better for you around the corner.)

“Tell me again why we couldn’t just put a zipper in? It would have made this whole process a lot easier.”
“Because they didn’t have zippers in this time period, and it wouldn’t be authentic.” Lauren continued to work the satin buttons through their respective loops.
“Yes, but who really cares?”
“Mr. Rivers cares, for one, and the Disney people, and believe me, there are plenty of people in the audience who care about those kinds of details. And even if none of that were true, I would still care. I like for things to be done correctly.”
(Yes! Historical accuracy matters, whether it’s for a stage play or a novel. Let’s look up those details and keep them true to history, friends!)

Ik heb dit boek meegenomen bij de bibliotheek, omdat het over mode gaat. Daarom leek het me interessant.

//// When her big shot blows up on her, how far will one woman go to regain her dream?////

I requested this book from Bethany House, expecting a really deep, fun book.... But that's not what delivered at all!

PROS:

Very slow start
Shallow characters (not much backstory)
Hard-to-connect-with story-line
CONS:

Awesome plot
Mystery/suspense was good
The vintage 40's and 50's aspect was refreshingly amazing
The fashion/theater world was involved

So, now the negative content.

NEGATIVE CONTENT:

Um, VERY LIGHT mentions of drugs/alcohol (not very much at all)
Couple comments about a man "having plenty of women"

I REALLY loved the last 100 pages of this book! The characters WERE hard to understand because Kathryn Cushman didn't give us much background....BUT she might have meant to do that.

It was perfectly clean and barely any romance.

Actually speaking about the romance, it was REALLY rushed! I mean, can't say without spoilers but ugh. No.

What made this book so interesting for me was the plot! That really was the only thing "right" for me. To wrap things up, the book was probably a 4 stars for me, it was pretty good, and I will certainly be reading more from this author!

Good job, Kathryn Cushman!

I have to say that Kathryn's novels are some of my favorite and have yet to disappoint. I LOVED this book and I couldn't put it down. The characters were wonderful and the setting felt like I was there. Lauren's faith is what I enjoyed reading the most. Not only was she a Christian but she actually acted like one. Real life issues are thrown her way and yes she gets sad but her faith and relationship with God are strong. I've not read too many books where the author makes it evident on what an actual relationship with Christ is all about. This book has it all. I loved the mysterious lady next door and the old Hollywood history. Also, this book is all about single women who are figuring out life-without a man! *Gasp* I so appreciated the fact that this wasn't a mushy love story. Yes, there is a great guy in the book but he is more in the background. Don't get me wrong I love a good love story but this book was made all the better without it.

I could go on but I'll let you decide and read the book for yourself. Highly recommend and if you haven't read anything by Kathryn yet, you must!

Have you ever wanted to run away from your life? Have you ever had a personal and professional disaster so large that you couldn’t ever imagine recovering from it? Well welcome to Lauren Summers life. Hollywood and the fashion industry are savage and unforgiving when it comes to ‘wardrobe malfunctions’ and when the brightest ‘innocent’ starlet of the moment suffers such a humiliation as she receives an award the backfire Lauren receives as the gown’s designer ends in the stunning silence of a two line text message as her boss fires her minutes later.

Blackballed from designing again in respectable circles Lauren finds a little job making costumes for a private high school’s theatre company and takes up residence in a run-down cottage in a secretive gated community- and tries to reassemble the remainders of her heart and her dreams.
Living in the gated community offers privacy, but isn’t without its challenges. The imposing figure of Charlotte Montgomery- a former starlet of another era looms large at the end of the lane. As time goes on it becomes clear to Lauren that Charlotte isn’t just an old woman with a prickly exterior- but is someone who has had her own personal disasters…that she is still running from.

Can common threads knit them together and bring about healing for them both?

If you are someone who knows me at all you know that I love classic film, and that I love historical costuming! What a treat is was to have the two laid out like a buffet throughout this book! Katherine Cushman paid attention to all the fine details of both the classic era of old Hollywood film, and to its signature luscious couture and created a book that is full of delicious descriptions! It was loads of fun for me to read about the gowns and costumes that Lauren was working on and every detail was vivid making me wish for a fairy godmother to bless me with someone to create such lovely things for me! ;)

Fading Starlight is not all about the dresses though it’s about the people that surround them. Miss Montgomery is a hurting woman with a bitter past that has taken more than her social standing- it took her will for living life and soured her on any who have dared to cross her path.

Lauren herself faces a crossroads as she looks at her own disappointments and decides what to do with the rest of her life. I liked that Lauren was so real in this story. She feels all that she is going through and feels it deeply, but she is also looking to God, and consistently and willingly seeks out the counsel and guidance of her second mother Rhonda’s wisdom. The cast of secondary characters from Lauren’s best friend Chloe, to Miss Montgomery’s housekeeper Frances, to the handy-man Cody are all important and delightful additions to Lauren’s life and story and I couldn’t help but like them!

One little thing that I liked was that this isn’t a romance story. While Chloe does her best to hook Lauren up with Cody and start something brewing Lauren recognizes that her life is in a bit of a shambles right now and is focused on getting herself where she needs to be personally before she begins any romance. I appreciated that perspective.

I highly recommend this book and enjoyed to so much! I will look for other titles from Ms. Cushman in the future!

Final Rating: 4.5

This was an interesting, easy to read story. Charlotte Montgomery was a very complex lady, and I loved the way she changed during the course of the book. I liked Lauren also, but I found some of her reactions understated to what my expectations were. Trust, forgive, and kindness play a large role.

Women’s Fiction is all about the heroine’s journey. Whether she is a mature woman facing a major life change or a young woman just starting out, the focus of the book is always growth, growth, growth. Fading Starlight lacked the depth that I feel belongs in such a character building story, although the tales of old Hollywood glamour and the discussions of Lauren’s job in fashion were intriguing enough to hold my attention. It was like a cupcake that’s almost all icing and no cake: super sweet but far from satisfying.

Lauren Summers is sitting before a TV screen when her world unravels in a spectacular, national news style manner. The dress she had worked so hard on for a young diva suffered a body baring wardrobe malfunction while the star was climbing the stairs to present an award. The people watching the show with her try to assure her everything will be okay but of course it isn’t. She’s fired by the firm she is doing her internship with, the owner of said company calls her out in the media for her mistake and she’s blacklisted in the industry. Even the flowers she receives from Cody, the man she’s just met, can’t cheer her up. She’s broke, jobless, blackballed and the subject of tabloid fodder. Wisely, she feels this is no time to start a relationship.

The one thing Lauren isn’t is friendless and one of those friends, a former professor, hooks her up with a new gig and a new place to live. The job doesn’t pay well but it is in a small town and her new domicile, while a fixer-upper, is in an exclusive neighborhood which comes complete with a guard who protects the residents from the press. As Lauren settles in she prays for guidance, especially in dealing with the neighbors, who she has heard can be more than a little cantankerous.

One of those neighbors, Charlotte Montgomery, is already planning to force Lauren to leave. Charlotte learned a hard lesson in her Hollywood era many years ago – trust no one. She determines that having Lauren live next door to her will be detrimental to her privacy and launches several schemes to get the young woman kicked out of the neighborhood. Charlotte has secrets to keep and she can’t risk anyone getting close enough to find out what they are. See the rest of my review at http://likesbooks.com/cgi-bin/bookRev...

Fading Starlight by Kathryn Cushman is a contemporary Christian novel and I absolutely loved it.
The story revolves around the verse in Genesis 50:20 "You intended it to harm me, but God intended it for good..." (NIV). God can take our broken lives and make something new that is better than we could ever hope or imagine.
God is very much at the heart of the novel. Lauren is a practicing Christian who tries to shine Jesus' light into dark places. She battles against her human nature to be Jesus' eyes and ears, His hands and feet in a hurting world.
Prayer has a strong presence in Fading Starlight. Lauren believes in praying for help and guidance, as well as remembering to thank God for His goodness.
Within Fading Starlight the past and present collide as Lauren meets reclusive and aging movie star Charlotte. Lauren adores the retro fashions that Charlotte wears. On the surface they have a lot in common, but underneath?
The novel deals with the theme of trust. Some characters have trust in abundance. Others have been hurt in the past and are very reluctant to open themselves up to being hurt again. Suspicion and mistrust pepper their lives making them miserable. They need to put past hurts behind them and learn to live and trust again.
Fading Starlight is a very glamorous novel as Lauren is a fashion designer. The passion she has for the glamorous retro designs and beautiful fabrics transfers to the reader. Kathryn Cushman has written in such detail that the dresses and the fabrics come alive for the reader as Lauren's passion is contagious.
There is the theme of steadfast friends within the novel. Lauren was taken in by her best friend Chloe's family when she was a teen. They took her in out of love. Aging actress Charlotte took in her late housekeeper as she felt horrified by the injustices done. Two very different motives but two very loyal households.
This was the first book that I had read by Kathryn Cushman and I loved it. I want more, more, more by her. I feel quite empty now that the story is over. I feel like I have left dear friends behind.
More stories please Kathryn Cushman.

The glamour of old Hollywood combined with a vintage-inspired fashion designer had my heart singing. In fact, the story had a retro movie feel to it even though it takes place in present day. I love classic films so I couldn't help picturing this novel acted out on the big screen.

And, oh my goodness, what a deliciously uncomfortable read it was! And that's a good thing! The author does a fantastic job of laying out a story filled with pitfalls and second guessing and a whole pile of angst. My jaw hurts from clenching my teeth while anxiously anticipating the proverbial other shoe to drop.

I could so relate to Lauren. Not because of her Ninja sewing skills though. No, we're kindred spirits because we both have trouble discerning promptings from the spirit even when they seem glaringly obvious afterwards. I love that Lauren places such importance in her faith. She prays and studies the bible and seeks ways to reflect Christ's light to those around her. But no matter how hard she tries, she doesn't always get it right. Like there's this one scripture that keeps coming to her mind throughout the book and she keeps dismissing it because she doesn't think it relates to her situation. Only it does! She's just not looking at it from the right perspective. I shouted myself hoarse trying to get her to see the light. All to no avail until it was nearly too late.

Charlotte is an interesting secondary character and I especially enjoyed the flashbacks of her life as a young Hollywood starlet. Brutal life experience has made Charlotte a bitter and judgemental woman. I did not like her at all at first. Felt righteously indignant on Lauren's behalf more than once, but Cushman works some storytelling magic and I began to see beyond the superior airs and grating behavior. Contrary to popular opinion, Charlotte Montgomery does have a heart!

An engaging faith-based story about friendship and faith and hope for the future.

Kathryn Cushman continues to be one of my favourite authors of contemporary fiction, with "Fading Starlight" providing another solid addition to her repertoire of novels. Lauren Summers is a remarkable character, and I was immediately caught up in her story as her fashion house internship mishap destroys her career dreams and she has to forge a new path. Lauren is a compelling character with deep strength, and I loved watching her tackle a new adventure in redefining her dreams. The unlikely friendship she ends up striking with the reclusive elderly Charlotte makes for some highly entertaining reading, and one that ends up being all the more sweeter for the bumps they experience along with the way. As secrets begin to come to light, I found myself racing through the pages of this well-plotted novel to see how everything would resolve. I especially appreciate the sure hand Cushman uses in developing Lauren's relationship with Cody, as she deftly draws them closer together without any over-the-top romance. Rather than Lauren being a character who needs rescuing from a man, Lauren finds her strength and healing in a place of surrender in her relationship with God, and then is able to discover the love that Cody offers from the place of wholeness she has started towards. I greatly enjoyed how Cushman effortlessly wove spiritual themes into this story and challenged me in my own walk with God. And I must say that, though I usually have no interest in fashion of any kind, I greatly enjoyed watching Lauren use the gifts God had given her to bring beauty and blessing into the lives of others.

"Fading Starlight" is, quite simply, contemporary fiction at its best. Fans of Kathryn Cushman are going to love her latest novel, and will be eagerly waiting for what she will offer up next! I award this novel 4.5 out of 5 novels.

Fresh out of design school, a wardrobe malfunction on national TV sinks Lauren's budding career as a dress designer even before it begins. Fortunately, Lauren has contacts who help her get out of Hollywood and start over in Santa Barbara. She is given a rent-free cottage and a low-paying job while she tries to reboot her career. Her new home is in a very private neighborhood, where hermit Charlotte Montgomery rebuffs Lauren's acts of neighborliness. As Lauren tries to establish herself, reporter Kendall Joiner offers to break the story that will clear Lauren's name, in exchange for information about Miss Montgomery, which may implicate her in a decades-old unsolved murder.

Lauren is encouraged by her friends to rely on the Lord during this difficult time, and make decisions that will honor Him. Even though she tries to do what is right, it seems that everything turns out wrong, and she even has to leave her tiny cottage for a smaller, second-story apartment.

I loved Lauren's character. She was young and vibrant, yet was an "old soul" in her love for gardening, classic movies, fine fabrics, and beautiful gowns.

This was the first book I had read by Kathryn Cushman, and I was very pleased with it. It kept my attention throughout the whole story, and the characters' growth was realistic. It was fun to get an inside look into fashion design and the "glory days" of Hollywood that I gleaned from this book. I recommend this story to those who like fashion, sewing, old movies, contemporary fiction, and women's fiction.

Fading Starlight was a lovely book. I loved that the book centered around Lauren and her struggle to overcome adversity and make right choices in difficult circumstances. Though there is a bit of romance, it is a small subplot that doesn't take center stage.

I liked Lauren's character because she struggled with the right thing to do and didn't always have the right answers. She complained and didn't understand why she was mistreated, but listened to wise counsel and the Bible to change how she reacted to people. She made mistakes -- and owned up to them. She wasn't perfect, but she was the kind of person I would like to be.

Charlotte has been through a lot. Some of it was very similar to Lauren's struggles. She learned to mistrust people though - and she is just sure Lauren is looking to use her in some way.

I think seeing things from Charlotte and Lauren's perspective is a great lesson in how we shouldn't judge people or jump to conclusions about their motivations and feelings. Fear - in many different forms - controls many of us.

I thought the cover was beautiful and really enjoyed all the gowns and that sort of thing. That era of beautiful men and women, glamorous gowns, glitter.... It was nostalgic without being cheesy. I may be more of a cotton girl myself, but I do love to escape into the silk and sequins through a book. :-)

I want to thank Bethany House for providing this book in exchange for my honest review.

I was not sure what to expect when I opened this book. The cover almost seemed to insinuate it was historical, but when I was on the red carpet in the beginning, I realized that was not the case.

I am not a seamstress, but I have been involved in theater now, and I have to say that I likely enjoyed this book more because of that little tidbit, more than I would have even last year. Kathryn made a sympathetic character in Lauren, where you felt for her.

There is little to no romance in this book, while there is the potential of it, but to those that enjoy no romance, this is one. The mention of scandals in Hollywood from the past are mentioned briefly, like mistresses and murder, but very briefly. I believe teens would enjoy this book and learn some wonderful life lessons from it as well.

Overall, the lesson I saw from it was kindness, when someone does not deserve it. Lauren showed love and kindness to someone that was cruel and believed the worst of her. She did this multiple times throughout the story, even though a falsehood seemingly ruined her life and she was being taken advantage of.

This book was given to me for review by Bethany House Publishers. The thoughts and reviews herein are my own.

It is a good book, very well-written, as usual from this author.

However, I wasn't drawn into the story for some reason. I couldn't connect with characters and the situations they were going through.

I admit the plot was interesting but I just didn't get involved.

I think it might be because a lot of the things going on seemed so unlikely and characters were hard to relate to.

Miss Montgomery is the best example: she was weird. I won't say people can't be like her but, honestly, that woman acted crazy. All about her was very misterious and complicated, especially her plans to uncover people's lies. And the old lady's niece was even crazier.

It is an easy read, though, and I definitely saw good insights about God and second chances and true love, even though the story didn't touch my emotions as I had expected.

I liked Lauren, but Chloe + her boyfriend and Cody were my favorites (: (a shame they weren't more present).

As I said, it is a nice read but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought.

RESEÑA COMPLETA EN ESPAÑOL

Friendship without limits

I'm not a fashion lover, but this book helped me get a better perspective of what it is. Also, if there is something I really enjoyed, it was the lack of romance. This story it’s about a deep friendship that continues surprising you until the end.

I really liked that the novel had a story of the book of Joshua as a topic, and this showed the imminent Christian approach.

It is almost impossible not to empathize with the protagonists. Both are strong women, but both have problems that make them go through difficult times; however, they never stop learning and keep going.

This is a novel of a kind, and I recommend it sincerely because I liked the approach of friendship.

Quick, easy read. Too easy in my opinion. You could see the "twists" coming miles before the author revealed them. Characters were shallow. Lots of missed opportunities to explore their motivations. Read like a YA novel or a Lifetime movie.

I don't usually go for the "Hallmark" style but this author wove a good storyline and followed thru tying up every angle well. I enjoyed the Old Hollywood ties, info on gown designs and thrilled with the museum event... All right "up my alley".

This is a Christian contemporary
I loved it! Such an easy, enjoyable read with some drama and fashion intertwined. This is definitely one of my top reads so far this year! I loved the story line and this is a new author for me that I will keep reading.

I received a copy of this book from Goodreads in exchange or a review.

This beautifully told, faith based story will settle into your heart like a cup of cocoa on a cool night. It is a gentle tale filled with hope, belief in a greater power, and resilience. Author Kathryn Cushman deftly weaves thread of long ago Hollywood with modern day. The book cover hints at the importance that fashion design will play throughout the story and the title is so appropriate.

Despite going from standing atop the pinnacle of her newly launched designing career into hiding from the debacle that just might ruin he , Lauren doesn’t lose her faith. That is the one thing she can always count on, even if she can’t always understand where it is leading her. So when the door to a new chapter of her life opens, Lauren is more than willing to step through.

Lauren finds herself living in a highly secluded cluster of homes with a curmudgeonly next door neighbor who believes the worst of everyone. Charlotte Montgomery is a former Hollywood star who lived through the worst that tinsel town had to offer. Decades earlier, after her powerful Father had died, the young Charlotte found herself without a career, without friends and linked to a murder.

Lauren’s faith is tested when faced with journalist Kendall Joiner. Kendall is willing to uncover to truth behind the red-carpet disaster, but there is a price to pay: Kendall wants information on Miss Montgomery so she can finally connect her to the long ago murder.

Faced with some tough decisions, Lauren must decide who’s will she must follow.

Kathryn Cushman is one of my favorite Christian fiction authors. Her characters seem realistic to me---not too perfect as the characters in many Christian fiction novels I have read. Her novels also are also not romantic novels although there may be a touch of romance in them. This one had a very meaningful Christian message in it but was not a preachy novel.

The novel starts out with an event which seemingly destroys Lauren Summers' beginning career as a fashion designer. After that event which causes the loss of her job and results in public humiliation for Lauren, she ends up living in a cottage next to the estate of a former Hollywood actress, Charlotte Montgomery. Charlotte has lived as a recluse for many years. A reporter contacts Lauren and promises to reveal the truth of what happened in the public event causing Lauren's humiliation if Lauren will find out information about Charlotte and provide it to her.
As Lauren attempts to show kindness to Charlotte, her efforts are rebuffed by Charlotte who has learned not to trust anyone beyond a few people. I won't go any further into the plot to avoid spoiling for others.

The author has skillfully woven suspense into the plot as well. There is a strong message of being kind to others even when they mistreat you and looking to God for approval when it is coming from others.

I enjoyed this novel very much and found it a very worthwhile read.

I bought this because the cover beauty was unparalleled, and the story within held up. I drank in the details of Lauren's job and all of the beautiful gowns she worked on, antique or costume. Equally compelling were the details of her new cottage and the bits of sprucing up she took care of inside and out. There's only a hint of pending romance, almost unnecessary honestly, but I like the potential it introduces. There's not a single character I didn't enjoy, even if it was only to revel in their evilness.

I was especially taken by Cranky Old Miss Montgomery and eagerly looked forward to her flashbacks. I'm not necessarily enchanted with Old Hollywood, but I was intrigued by her perspective on it. The illegitimate daughter of a wealthy man's mistress, her father is nevertheless just as devoted to her as the family he lives with, giving her both love and every opportunity he can -- until his untimely death leaves her at the mercy of a scorned wife, who takes the first opportunity to blacklist her from the industry and she quickly realizes that most of her friends are false ones, uninterested in her unless she can do something for them. And so, a wealthy and cynical recluse she became, poor woman.

(Which is why it's so wonderfully satisfying to see her Constant Suspicion toward the Suspiciously Helpful New Neighbor slowly - achingly slowly - ebb away as she is met with confounding selfless after selfless act.)

Unfortunately, the book suffers a fair bit for being an Extremely Christian book. Characters are constantly reminding each other, "Remember that one parable? Think of how you might apply that lesson here." Entire paragraphs and pages are devoted to the main character pondering God's Will and His reasons for sending her there, hoping she can be a good steward, etc. At one point the MC actually laments, what if she accidentally helps the old lady for SELFISH REASONS, like wanting to get a peek at those vintage designer gowns while she's helping her?? To which her friend's mom literally tells her she must "pray for right motives with every single interaction you have with her." Are you kidding me.

Obviously, there are readers for whom this is perfect. For me it just gummed up an otherwise 5-star story. (I'd still rather have this type of book over one with bedroom scenes, but I wish I could find more that have neither of these aspects.)
