The Aftermath: A Survivor's Odyssey Through War-Torn Europe

Rate this book
A survivor begins an epic search for his wife through post-war Europe. Here is a memoir of the twentieth century?s greatest cataclysm, with a profound and illuminating difference. Casting light on the little-examined period of chaos immediately after World War II, it tells how, with unflagging courage and perseverance, one man and his wife recover freedom and individual dignity. The Aftermath was the inspiration for the international award-winning documentary, Dark Lullabies.

I loved this memoir. I'm awed by some people's amazing will to live and to rebuild when faced with such hatred, tragedy and brutal mistreatment. I also never thought much about the aftermath of WW2.... When Henri is sitting on the bus surrounded by Germans, he's basically surrounded by a bunch of murderers and yet he has to find a way to deal with his current situation and to prevail....
