MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a Shonen Jump manga that follows the story of Mash Burnedead, a magicless protagonist in a world full of magic. The manga is a comedy with a vibe akin to a mashup of One Punch Man and Harry Potter.
MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a hilarious and action-packed manga that is sure to delight fans of shonen manga. The series features a lovable cast of characters, epic battles, and plenty of humor. If you're looking for fun and entertaining read, MASHLE is worth checking out!
This has been one of the coolest arcs in Jump right now. The action, the high level magic, the immensely powerful characters. It's like watching Dumbledore fight Voldemort, but for like three months straight. Volume 1 just came out in print, so I'm gonna start re-read the series bi-monthly as the physical volumes come out. So expect some old Mashle volumes getting re-reads over the next few months!
A cover-to-cover brawl where following all the spells warping space and time can get a little confusing and the long sections without Mash Burnedead make me wonder why I"m reading this at all. When Mash does show up, he's just straight-up Superman now, and I'm not sure I want to read a Superman book.
I've read all the volumes my local library has at this point, so I have to take a break from this series anyway. I'm not going to request that the library purchase more volumes, but I might check them out if the library does get more in the future.
Just when I think this series can go anymore into the OP extremes, there is a massive tug of war moment with a certain muscle boy and a giant demon like monster..... well yeah!!!
Pretty fun volume, two big fights. One being the headmaster of the entire school. There's still funny parts but less funny than last few volumes. Will still read cause fun breezy read.
Although I've been having a lot of fun with this series none of the volumes have had that extra level to give it five stars. They're exciting, humorous, but a bit all over the place and can have strange pacing. But out of any of the books so far, this one deserves that highest ranking the most. In this volume Mash and his friends fight agaisnt Innocent Zero's attack on the Divine Visionary exam, with Wahlberg directly confronting Innocent Zero. I thought the whole book was very well put together and paced, and visually the main fight was amazing. It didn't struggle with any of the design issues I've had with other fights where the giant words and slashes would cover things up and make it hard to picture what was going on. The magic present in that fight was shown in very creative ways which made the whole thing a visual wonder. I also think what's particularly interesting about Wahlberg and Innocent Zero compared to other characters is that they have one line normally and can go up to three lines, which means they learned to get two more lines worth of skill on their own.
It was crucial for Innocent Zero's introduction to be well written as he does seem to be the main antagonist of the whole series. I think he seems interesting enough, and I like that he has a shared history with Wahlberg, considering that . I thought that the shapeshifting was a nice touch, and I like that even in his normal form he wasn't completely there, which was a cool visual touch. In general, I loved how Komoto drew their time and space spells, using two concepts that are already fairly abstract on their own and using them to fight against each other when they're evenly matched. I also love how Komto drew the dark magic spells in a way that is different from his usual style- the use of negative space to make these hazy shapes contrasted nicely with the rest of the art and was extremely well drawn. Clearly my favorite part of this book was the art, because god was it especially amazing in this one.
On top of the fighting I still thought the humor was sprinkled in well. I loved Dot and Lance as babies so much it was adorable! I loved that they kept getting distracted by the rattle and it was a nice bit of fun before the rest of the book became more melancholy and pensive.
I also thoguht it was hilarious how Margarette used their broken wand during the book, which was a nice touch. I noticed on the cover they had their intact wand and I clocked it immediately, but thankfully that was just for consistency on the cover.
"How do you figure?" "Woman's intuition." "Oh, so you're a girl? I was wondering about that."
We love a nonbinary icon. But that does make me notice how few female characters there have been so far in the series. I would love to see more girls who have important roles, because so far all we have is Lemon who doesn't even do anything besides just pop up at random moments to be insane. I love her for that, though.
++Potential spoilers in the next paragraph++
Mash was great in this volume too, of course. I really love how 90% of the time he's so flat and relaltively emotionless, but when he locks in he becomes a god. It was pretty sweet to see that the whole school was rooting for him in the end. I know he was supposed to be an outcast, but I don't see how anyone could actually hate him because he holds almost no grudges and only really cares about doing his workouts and eating cream puffs. As for his greater purpose with Innocent Zero, I have a theory about that. Innocent Zero seems to be pulling a "reverse Voldemort" where instead of splitting himself up to make himself unstoppable he's going to absorb his children he's created in order to get access to their skills. I believe that Mash was sort of designed to be strong so that Innocent Zero could get those skills? But then my question is why would he abandon Mash in the first place? Wouldn't it make sense to keep him close so he doesn't grow up getting an outside perspective and could potentailly cause issues, as he is now. Was him having no magic abilities on purpose or an accident? And if it was on purpose why would you abandon him when there was a high probability he would be executed. Or maybe that was the goal, but there's so much that's unknown right now about Innocent Zero's specific plans regarding Mash.
Ugh, this volume was so good. The art was amazing, the visuals stuning, and it made me feel on the edge of the seat. This volume really tugged on my heartstrings as it spent time delving into Wahlberg's past and his relationship with his master, Adam Jobs (which is such a mundane name for the most powerful magic weilder lol). The whole volume felt like it had much more of a purpose than the last, and the fight scenes were way more dynamic this time alot. With books like this I don't think any review I could ever write would actually properly describe what I enjoyed about the book. It's mostly just me rambling, after all. Overall, I just feel like I really meshed with this volume in paticular, and I found it more exciting and gripping than the previous ones. I had so much fun reading this one, and it's a great introduction into the next arc of the series!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Rate:5/5——————-top vol
The two 'greatest' mages in the world square off and it's full of powerful magics of overwhelming scale, so overwhelming that I don't really understand or get them. When Dot uses explosion magic? I understand explosions! When Lance uses gravity magic? I understand gravity (sort of). But now we have time and space magic? Abstractly I know what they are but they immediately use powers that are so high level and abstract, without explaining anything, that the battles are hard to follow. Lots of random shapes and colour inversions. And very little of Mash, as Innocent Zero and Wahlberg to battle and he sits around listening to them. Not much comedy in this volume, which is a shame since that's always been the series' highlight. At least it looks like this arc is over now, and I can watch Hajime Komoto try to wrestle back the plot into something understandable.
This was a much more story-driven and backstory heavy volume than previous ones, but it was still an enjoyable, hilarious read. Something I haven't brought up until now that I want to mention is the little side stories in each volume. They're fucking hilarious and add to the charm of the story as a whole. They kind of remind me of little slice-of-life interludes in between the main story and are a nice break from the batshit insanity of said story. I don't know why I haven't mentioned it til now, but this volume's side story was hilarious and I wanted to give it as well as the others a shout out.
Nothing else to say outside of those two things because, really, you know the drill by now: the action was amazing, the characters fun and endearing, the comedy spot-on, seriously need I go on? This was another great volume in a great series, enough said.

Walhberg Vs. Innocent Zero We get to know why he wants Mash Mash Vs Diamond and Win A comic relief with babies :p Wahlberg defeated and loses his magic to Zero We will meat again And a tug of War game between Mash and a giant Monster
Headmaster Wahlberg gets pulled into the fight when the Innocent Zero show up and try to hold the whole school in their thrall. We learn a ton about who the actual threat is here and how Wahlberg got mixed up with them in the first place. Mash is tested again and again, but continues to do the right thing for the right reasons. The head Innocent Zero is out only for himself and immortality, we learn why he is after Mash and it actually fits within the story framework really nicely.
This is my favorite installment in a while not just for the giant action set pieces, but for the sheer amount of plot and context we get. I'll be very curious where the story pivots next, but they laid a lot of groundwork for where ever they would like to go.
This series is FUN! What can I say, the humor and the action make it a page-turning fun time! Story and art are perfectly melded together by Hajime Komoto. Mash is a wanted man! The school is in grave danger and the odds seem to be stacking against Mash and the gang...but even in the most stress filled battles, Mash seems to say as cool as the other side of the pillow. This volume flies by because of the action sequences but is a solid entry and very much welcomed!
This is a fun series that feels like a cross between Harry Potter and One-Punch Man. Volume 8 starts getting a little more serious with bigger stakes and more backstory. Mash, the main character, is still the same goofy guy from previous volumes, but the balance between serious and humor is a nice change.
Volume 8 of Mashle hit the right spot where you can finally have a few answers why Innocent Zero wanted Mash at the same time learning Headmaster Wahlberg's past. Of course, I can't stop laughing that Mash forgotten about Cell War and how he eats a fighting candy in mere seconds. Topnotch between wizards and Mash.
