*Heartbreaking*
This is the story of Evelina and is told through two timelines, the past from 1934 onwards in Italy and from 1979 onwards in New York.
In the past Evelina and her sister Bernadetta as girls were never allowed to go to school so they had a string of tutors for most subjects. She is unyielding that marriage is not for her and that all changes when she meets Ezra. He fast becomes the love of her life but he is Jewish and with war threatening and tragedy striking she can no longer bear the pain of staying in Italy. She asks her parents if she can go to America to stay with relatives. They agree.
In the present fast forward she is happily married with grown up children.
One day whilst she is in Brooklyn her past and present collide in the most unexpected way….

This beautiful and emotional read showcases everything we know and appreciate about Santa Montefiore’s writing! In my opinion, it’s her best book to date.
Based on a true story and set in a fictitious town, Vercellino, in northern Italy during the 30s and in Brooklyn during the 40s and 50s, ‘An Italian Girl in Brooklyn’ features our Italian girl, Evelina Pierangelini. It’s a deeply moving book about love and loss.
Montefiore takes us on a journey with Eva to remind us that family is precious, that we need to appreciate love and not take it for granted, that we learn to value the gift of ‘now’, and that we must learn to see a glass half full instead of half empty. Readers won’t get too far into the book before they are caught up in Evelina’s nostalgia for her youth at Villa L’Ambrosiana and her first love.
Two passages were so vividly and beautifully written that I’ll remember them for a long time. The first one was comparing a tree losing its leaves in the Fall to what Evelina has given up. The second was an acknowledgement that war and loss force the world to become a place of darker shadows but it makes the light we do experience to appear brighter. I loved these thought-provoking paragraphs, especially since we are having Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend and we are noticing the leaves fall and the nights getting darker.
Evelina discovers that humans can plan until their heart’s content, but sometimes life gets in the way and plans must be shelved. How we deal with the bumps in the journey makes all the difference. My grandma used to say that adversity brings both a lesson and a blessing. You’ll need to read this spectacular book to understand how Evelina Pierangelini’s life echoes my nana’s belief.
This will be one of those books you’ll cherish and reach for time and time again.

Thoughtful, moving, and immersive!
An Italian Girl in Brooklyn is a poignant, tender tale set in Northern Italy during 1934, as well as New York in 1979, that takes you into the lives of Evelina Pierangelini and Ezra Zanotti, two young lovers from different backgrounds and religions whose lives are unimaginably torn apart and changed forever when their homeland adopts and enforces Germany’s antisemitic regulations during WWII.
The prose is eloquent and expressive. The characters are brave, selfless, and resilient. And the plot is an exceptionally touching tale about life, loss, family, secrets, separation, desperation, forbidden love, tragedy, friendship, and the consequences, repercussions, and horrors of war.
Overall, An Italian Girl in Brooklyn is a beautifully written, sweeping saga by Montefiore that tugs at the heartstrings, makes you think of all those what-ifs, and ultimately reminds you that life is complicated, things often happen for a reason, and love is powerful and everlasting.

I've read this author's other historical novels and enjoyed them very much. While this was a good story, it didn't quite match up to her previous ones.
The story starts in 1979 then goes back and forth to different eras. It follows Evelina's life from being a young girl in Italy to her life in New York and her loves and family. There was a big twist in it but I did see it coming. The characters of her Grandmother and her Grand Aunt were wonderful and very entertaing. I learned a lot about Mussolini's treatment of the Jews, things I hadn't heard before.
A light enjoyable read.
I've read this author's other historical novels and enjoyed them very much. While this was a good story, it didn't quite match up to her previous ones.

An interesting take on love during times of war. I was impressed with the somewhat circular narrative - the red herring was a nice surprise. However, this is a lovely love story and nothing more: it is an easy read but won’t change your world.
If you’re after a few afternoons on the couch then this is your book, but if you’re after something that will change your perspective or provide a heartbreaking account of WW2, look elsewhere.

No le rezo porque me hizo sufrir; Es que las historias basadas en hechos reales con contexto de la Segunda Guerra mundial… Es que no puedo con ellas, me desgarran por dentro. Y sí, como dice uno de los personajes “Si todos los que vivieron aquello lo dejaran en el pasado, el mundo nunca aprendería de la historia. Y tiene que aprender para que no vuelva a ocurrir.” A lo que otro le replica: “Los seres humanos rara vez aprenden de la historia. La lección se pierde al cabo de unas cuantas generaciones. No hace falta ser historiador para entenderlo. La humanidad comete los mismos errores una y otra vez. La memoria tiene las patas muy cortas.”
“Una chica italiana en Brooklyn” es una hermosa y conmovedora historia no solo de amor, narrada en tres épocas distintas, sino también una historia que habla acerca del impacto de la guerra en los italianos, sobre todo en las familias judías, algo vigente hasta hoy en día. ¿Es un amor perdido en la juventud que renace mágicamente en la madurez? Sí, pero también habla de la pérdida, de la inspiración, de la supervivencia y la aceptación.
Narrada desde la perspectiva de Evelina es una historia desgarradora sobre ella y Ezra, quienes se amaron durante más de cuarenta años y sobrevivieron a la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
La trama va y viene entre el Nueva York actual y el norte de Italia durante la guerra y va de menos a más. Estructurado en cuatro partes, la novela da inicio en Nueva York en 1979 durante la cena de acción de gracias, solo que un acción de gracias a la italiana.
Luego nos vamos a Italia, 1934 y a partir de aquí me ha parecido bastante triste, pese a que Montefiore es una genia para describir situaciones históricas tan dolorosos como el Holocausto, sin caer en el morbo.
La primera parte nos cuenta sobre Gaetano Pierangelini y Artemisia padres de Evelina que viven en Villa L’ Ambrosiana y su vida parece ir de maravillas hasta que los alemanes toman el control de la parte norte de Italia, que llamaron República Social Italiana, y reinstaura al Duce -Mussolini- como líder del reformado Partido Republicano Fascista. El pueblo judío queda a merced de la Alemania nazi. ¿Por qué cuento esto? Porque en la vida de la joven Evelina aparece Ezra Zanotti un joven judío cuya historia te desgarra.
Por momentos pensaba que no habría trama pero pasando la segunda parte, año 1980, nuestra protagonista llega a Estados Unidos y es un no parar de leer porque Montefiore le da un giro que lo cambia todo El hogar ya no será Villa L ’Ambrosiana y su familia, sino también Mandolina, Antonio y Topino. Están entrelazados, tragedia y dicha, como las dos caras de una misma moneda, y Evelina no puede pensar en una sin pensar en la otra y cada pensamiento lo tiene impregnado de tristeza. “Era mejor relegarlos al pasado y dejar que el polvo se asentara sobre ellos, cubriendo tanto el placer como el dolor.” Son muchas las escenas donde Evelina llora tanto que parece que no puede salir adelante. Es optimista y creé que su corazón mejorará en Estados Unidos, que encontrará una vocación que la inspire y que puede volver a enamorarse, pero sufre. Su vida en Italia se había estancado. Tiene que volver a fluir. Inyectarse entusiasmo en su vida y encontrar un propósito. Evelina es una mujer valiente, tiene miedo, ha sufrido muchísimo, pero tiene una fortaleza tan grande, que es lo que la ayuda a superar los traumas de la guerra; el desarraigo que ella sufre, Santa lo describe tan bien que uno, lo siente en carne propia. Pude sentir empatía y comprender a los personajes, sentir sus emociones y entender a Ezra. No saben lo que es éste hombre, el EJEMPLO que nos deja con frases, momentos que para él son oro, como el contemplar un cielo lleno de estrellas. Él no pide más porque… Vivió el infierno, la maldad que ningún ser humano debe vivir. Y bueno, después se da una escena que yo NO la vi venir y me dejó… totalmente estupefacta.
Recomendadísimo. Merece la pena leerlo porque estamos ante una historia de amor, esperanza y honestidad. Ezra es un amor de hombre y la ambientación es uno de los puntos fuertes que tiene la autora y la gran capacidad que tiene para describirte Italia y las calles de Brooklyn… Era ver los sitios con los ojos de la mente.
Insisto: Lo que más me desgarró fue saber al final que está basado en una historia real y a mí me destruyen éstas historias de amor, de guerra.

“Una chica italiana en Brooklyn”.
Santa Montefiore es una de mis autoras favoritas, y con cada libro me gusta más su manera de escribir. Las descripciones detallas son un sello innegable suyo.
La novela está escrita en dos tiempos:
1) Vercellino (un pueblo en el Norte de Italia) en 1934.
2) Nueva York, 1980.
1934, Evelina vive en Vercellino, más específicamente en una villa donde el paso del tiempo dejo su huella, con su familia. Su padre decide con quienes se casarán. Benedetta se casacón un banquero, pero la protagonista quiere ser ella misma la que elija a su marido y no que se lo impongan.
En el pueblo, conoce a Ezra, el hijo de una familia judía; comienzan a conocerse mejor, pero la guerra se interpone en su relación.
1980, Nueva York. En Acción de Gracias, Evelina celebra con su marido, sus hijos, familiares y amigos. Su esposo es 11 años mayor, y llevan treinta de casados.
Debido a que el amor marca y trasciende, la protagonista piensa en su vida y en sus prioridades.
Aparte, el libro cuenta con personajes entrañables, que nos hacen sonreír y son muy queribles: y al autora describe la sociedad de la época y las tradiciones que las mujeres pueden decidir si respetar o no.
Me gustó mucho esta historia y la recomiendo.

Nieprzeciętna fotografia kobiecej wrażliwości – portret nasączony stratą i rozdzierającym smutkiem, piękny i niepowtarzalny w szczerości melodyjnych uczuć. Tu miłość wkrada się szeptem, aby oczarować kadry nastoletniej intymności i zabrudzić serce fetorem niesprawiedliwości. Santa Montefiore nie ułatwia bohaterom życia – każe im boleśnie wdzierać się w szczeliny wojennej codzienności, mierzyć z żałobą i nicością dnia, pozwala jednak łapać chwilowe ukojenia i odkrywać nowe twarze najważniejszych doznań. Włoszka z Brooklynu to także starodawna pocztówka z rodzinnej włoskiej posiadłości oraz nowojorski spektakl inspirujących w swym przebiegu scen.

Jaudinantis ir jautrus kūrinys apie nepaprastą ir stiprią italės Evelinos ir žydo prekybininko Ezros meilę, kurią išskyrė staiga prasidėjęs karas. Sužinojus, kad Ezra žuvo, Evelina pasiryžta pradėti naują gyvenimą Amerikoje. Visgi po daug metų merginą atsiveja praeitis ir grįžta jos pirmoji meilė.... Tai graži, gan lengva istorija apie draugystę, skaudžias gyvenimo pamokas, praradimus ir naujai atgimusią meilę, kuriai nepavaldus nei laikas ar skaudūs likimo smūgiai...

Heerlijk!, hoe onwaarschijnlijk ook, het leest als een trein.! Heel mooi verhaal, wel wat ongeloofwaardig, maar hè……het is een roman! Ik werd er best enthousiast van in ieder geval. Ik heb nog niet echt veel van deze schrijfster gelezen, maar daar ga ik verandering inbrengen zo nu en dan!

Enjoyed this but I felt like the story had been done before by other authors. I read the bulk of it in a full-on heatwave though and so could have been distracted by being too restless!

Skaitant tokias knygas, supranti, kad istorija jau kažkur girdėta, veikėjai pažįstami, o siužetas – gana nuspėjamas. Bet kartais to ir reikia. Lengvi romanai turi savo vietą – ypač šiltais vasaros vakarais, kai norisi tiesiog atsipalaiduoti ir pasinerti į šiltą, jaukią istoriją. Tokias knygas, labai mėgstu skaityti būtent vasaros periodu. :)
Tai – pasakojimas apie italės Evelinos ir žydo Ezros meilę. Veiksmas prasideda Italijoje – tai man iškart pliusas, nes labai mėgstu istorijas su Italijos ar Prancūzijos prieskoniu. Evelina gyvena su šeima XVI a. viloje, jos sesuo ruošiasi vestuvėms, o pati Evelina – jauna mergina, nenorinti tekėti iš pareigos. Ji trokšta tikros, nuoširdžios meilės.

Siužetas nuspėjamas, veikėjai gana tradiciniai, bet knyga skaitosi lengvai. Buvo viena vieta, kur siužetas mane kiek nustebino, tačiau to neužteko, kad visai knygai suteiktų „wow“ faktoriaus.

Evelina is 17 en woont in Vercellino in Italië. Ze leeft een zorgeloos leventje en is stiekem verliefd op de joodse Ezra. Maar dan begint de oorlog en Italië gaat gebukt aan het opkomende bewind van Hitler en de joden in Duitsland worden al gedeporteerd naar de concentratiekampen. Maar de vader van Ezra wil niet vluchten want hij gelooft van die rassenwetten wel niet tot Italië zullen komen en ze gespaard zullen blijven maar dan gebeurd het ondenkbare en bereikt de oorlog Italië en worden de joden opgepakt. Ezra kan zich nog eventjes schuilhouden maar wordt uiteindelijk gevonden. Evelina blijft wachten op Ezra maar wanneer de oorlog voorbij is, komt hij niet terug en verneemt ze het nieuws dat hij gestorven is en besluit te verhuizen naar Amerika waar ze hoopt dat haar verdriet zal minderen en vindt ze de liefde terug met Franklin en sticht ze een gezin. Maar zal haar geluk blijven duren? Want een voorval zet haar leven op zijn kop en moest ze een hartverscheurende keuze maken.

I was quite disappointed by this book. I love historical fiction but An Italian Girl in Brooklyn just didn’t do it for me. I felt like WWII was skimmed over- there could have been a lot more depth with Evelina and her family helping the partisans or the real racism that the Italian Jews faced. It felt like a lot of the really interesting historical events were skimmed over and I was left wanting.
The other thing that bothered me was the reunion between Ezra and Eva. I’m not a fan of the whole “true-love-gives-me-an-excuse-to-do-anything-I-want” vibe. It seems unlikely that after not seeing Ezra for 15+ years Eva would just hop right into bed with him, completely forgetting her husband (who is a nice guy!) and her three kids. Evelina justifies her behaviour by saying that Franklin doesn’t pay much attention to her anymore, so it’s okay to get her loving from Ezra…. In my experience, relationships require a little something called effort and communication. If Eva was feeling bothered she should’ve talked to Franklin about it. Instead, she starts an affair with her long-lost love and even takes a trip with him to Italy! And then when Eva finally puts down some boundaries, Ezra just hangs around basically just waiting for Franklin to die before him and Eva can be together?? That’s wack.

For the first time reading a Montefiore book and feel like the relationship is forced. First of all, I couldn't really see Evelina (and if I slightly did, she reminded me of Kitty from The Deverill Chronicles). Ezra - couldn't see him *at all*. There is no chemistry between the characters, the story is predictable and has been written so. many. times.

I enjoyed the story but it was quite thin with few twists . I found some of the descriptions of the romances and feelings rather too gushing and dull so skipped through them. It seemed almost as if they were there to pad out the story. Most of the characters lacked depth and only Evelina i=was made to come alive. I felt that Ezra changed character across the story.

An Italian girl in Brooklyn is a stories that spans decades; Evelina lives in a small town in Italy before World War Two. She is homeschooled and longs to be grown in up and spend time with the cloth merchant's son who has caught her eye. But as she grows up, the world changes and her love becomes forbidden, eventually resulting in Evelina searching for a new life in America.
I enjoy Montefiore 's books and this one is no exception; the historical setting giving a depth to the romance story and her usual writing style painting a beautifully clear picture in your mind.
I found this one a little slower to start in comparison to her other works, but once the story had gripped me I really enjoyed its twists and turns.

Not one to usually read historical romance I was impressed with this intriguing saga that takes us from a quaint villa in northern Italy to the streets of Brooklyn. Based on a true story Montefiore makes it her own, giving us a glimpse of war torn Italy and the people affected by the German occupation. An eloquently written story of tragedy and happiness.
