I was born and raised in Northcentral Kansas. I'm a farmer's daughter, but I now make my home in the city of Wichita. I'm an RN. Neonatal nursing has been the main focus of my career. What can I say? I love babies. I was invited to the highschool graduation of a baby I took care of. Talk about making me feel old!
In June of 2011 I became a widow after my husband of 36 years and 11 months died from multiple brain tumors. It was a very sad time, but thanks to the three f's, my faith, my family and my friends, life is moving forward. I have four brothers, one daughter and two grandchildren who all work at making me feel loved.
I'm the author of more than 30 books and I'm currently writing a series called The Brides of Amish Country for Love Inspired.
If you've never read Patricia Davids' book "Amish Christmas Joy", you will like this, very much.
I couldn't, BECAUSE I have read "Amish Christmas Joy".
Look, I realize that this was a hard time period for Davids to be writing in. Her dad had just died of CLIVD19 (not a typo, there is no 'Ø' in Roman Numerals, and an 'O' gives it the more pronounceable and user-friendly look. Add each numeral to the next and see what you get). Anyhow, I get that Davids was not in a good place when she was under contract to write this.
But she stole from THE WORST BOOK she'd already written, and took parts that... I'm sorry, but I'm not okay (and neither are the Amish) with self-elevation, so somehow it's "adorable" when a loud-mouthed five year old not only takes over the lead of a Christmas pageant at the VERY LAST moment, but shouts out secret personal information in front of the whole community without consent? That's cute. Really. (((((NO.)))))
That's *NEVER* okay. It was worse with Joy, because she was a spoiled rotten, temper-tantrum throwing little brat. But here we have it again. And no, the little girl in this book isn't much better. Instead of Down Syndrome being the 'excuse' for her craptastic behavior, we have her age as the rationale, here. And that's even WORSE.
The story itself is... cringy. Mostly because of Danny's desperation to get hitched up... at this point with pretty much anyone with a uterus. I'm not kidding - he wanted Becca, he would've taken *ANY* of Waneta's girls, he even would've taken Maisie. He's been like this needy, almost distasteful character throughout the whole of the series (and this is book SEVEN), so...
... But at LAST Danny finds truuuu luvvv. Lucky for him an ex-Amish girl just happens to find her way to MAINE where he is ((????)) where she's living just outside of an Amish community with her uncle who hates the Amish (so... why did he move just outside of an Amish community, then? Except because Davids said so?)
She, of course, MUST escape her uncle with her niece. But she stays there with him, because... *reasons*... for several years, instead of going to a women's shelter and giving a false name and letting a church somewhere help her find a job, etc., when she came of age. Because she's just that stupid, or something? I... definitely think the better choice is to stay with the uncle who hits her so hard he leaves a hand-print shaped bruise across her face. (((NOT!)))
And then Danny sees it, and in his oh-so-intelligent brilliance says, 'I'm not sure if she's been physically abused...' (!!!!)
More fun continues as we're told that the Amish 'wouldn't allow people to dress like them to hide'... but then they immediately dress Jane and Bridget in Amish clothing. R'something.
The whole thing just grated me, start to finish. But when we got to the culmination 'Pageant'... that. was. IT. I didn't need a reminder of Joy. I happily buy Joy's book just to BURN it, frankly (which I also do with Felicia Mason's "Sweet Harmony".) It was that bad. So doing a repeat of Joy here?! How about no?!
I loved Davids' "Brides of Amish Country" series (okay, excepting for 'Joy's book)... but this series? It's nowhere near as good. There are a few books that I even liked, that my kids are even reading.
Christmas on His Doorstep is a story of fiction that deals with a very real topic. This situation is also what influences a friendship between Jane Christner and Danny Coblentz. Some parts are sad and some are entertaining, but the end result is a faith filled inspirational romance.
Book Quotes:
You can't change the past. What you do from here on out matters.
Our Lord God does not promise our lives will be free of pain and grief. What does He tell us? He promises to be with us always until the end of time. We rely on Him for our strength in times of trial for His love never fails us.
Jane Christner and her niece are seeking a safe place from their abusive uncle. Amish schoolteacher, Danny Coblentz, helps them with finding shelter.
I enjoyed getting to know Jane and Danny, as well as the secondary characters in the book. I also enjoyed the Christmas theme. The story was well written and kept me wondering and caring about the main characters well-being. It ended with a very satisfying ending.
The book's beginning started off interesting, the middle was prolonged more than I would have liked. The other 60% of the book became more entertaining with more events happening that kept me reading. I liked the ending, and that always makes me happy. J🐰
An adorable puppy on the step and a young woman and child running away from me.. what is going on? I have to find them, they look as though they are in trouble. Please Lord let me find them to help them.
A wonderful little romance . An Amish school master interferes when he suspects a neighbor is being mistreated. Somehow, this ends with a little girl and her aunt taking up his home and soon his heart. Great read.
I always enjoy Ms. Davids' books and especially this series. However, this book was one of her best. If you read Amish fiction, this topic situation was actually different for our heroine, as she had huge fears that were grounded. It reminded me that He always is looking out for us, even when we forget that fact.
Held your interest from the first page to the last. Looking forward to the next book this author had written. Hope you all take the time to read and enjoy.
Jane and Bridget are staying with their only relative a mean and nasty man. His only reason for keeping them is for the state money. Jane must find a home for their dog or else. Jane ties him to the porch of the local Amish schoolteacher. What Jane doesn’t expect is to find a community willing to help her.
Set in Maine we get a glimpse of an Amish community we don’t normally read about. We also read a subject that is not prevalent in Amish stories.
Christmas on His Doorstep is the perfect Christmas read. It reminds us that we all need help at some point in our lives and just need to be willing to put our pride or fear aside welcome it.
