Tipped employees make up more than four million working professionals in the U.S. and they age into one of the most economically disadvantaged populations in the country. (But not for the reasons you think!) Tipped is here to change that, and your life.
Tipped is your step-by-step guidebook to build your own path to financial freedom while working in the industry that you love (and love to hate).
Tipped explains how service employees are left out of the most common paths to wealth building and then helps you build your own path to the financial life of your dreams.
Through real stories and service industry related analogies, Tipped will teach you how Barbara Sloan, a lifelong SIP turned personal finance expert and money coach, is the driving force behind this powerful guidebook. She spent 20 years working in almost every possible tipped position across the country. She has made endless financial mistakes and learned lots of hard lessons, but it was only after working on Wall Street, running her own multi-million dollar company, and helping the wealthiest individuals plan their biggest budget items did she see all of the ways that tipped workers are left out of the wealth building world.
Whether you plan to be a lifelong service worker or are only here for a short time (and a good time), you can create the strongest financial footing while in the least suspecting of places.
honestly, life changing. So incredibly helpful and Barbara is so soft and understanding with her readers. Knowing that so many of us, like her, were not given any guidance at all on how to navigate finances, or money in general. Especially on fluctuating income!
Would 100% recommend to anyone that has no idea where to start, but knows something’s gotta change.
A great quick and easy read. For those already familiar with personal finance, some parts can feel repetitive - she covers a lot of basics. But for those unfamiliar, the content is really beneficial. She does a great job of simplifying things and creating analogies that are easy to understand. 👌🏼
A well written and easy to comprehend book this is an amazing read for anyone working in the service industry looking for ways to save money. I look forward to what else this author has to offer.
This is a great start for those trying to find greater financial security in the service industry. This little book packs a ton of good advice and information into a slim, quick-to-read package.
If you work for tips and want to get to a place where you don't feel broke, this may be the financial advice book you've been hoping for. What's particularly refreshing about Sloan's approach is that she really gets the struggles of the service industry professionals she is trying to reach. This isn't a book by a hedgefund bro who thinks your financial woes can solved by avoiding Avocado toast and buying crypto.
There are a lot of solid insights to be gained from this book, and the book has definitely provided me with some optimism about where I am and actionable steps to get where I want to be. I highly recommend it for anyone out there who feels overwhelmed by the amount of financial literature out there or who doesn't feel that literature speaks to the service industry. I especially appreciated the chapters on insurance and investing, two areas where I know I struggle.
Each chapter ends with actionable steps to take to look at your financial goals and begin the work of reaching them. It helps that Sloan uses a good deal of examples from service work to explain the more esoteric economic principles she covers.
Financial freedom shouldn't be a pipe dream for those in the service industry. This book offers a pretty solid blueprint to get started towards a life of greater choice and freedom from money worries. Wherever you are in the service industry, and whether or not your plan to stay, this book has a lot to offer you.
I loved a lot about this book especially bc she is a lesbian and a former SWer. Most books about finance are for 9-5ers and people who make their money in cash or mostly tips are dealing with different financial situations so I really appreciated a book dealing with that.
My only complaint is that the last chapter should have been first bc it’s about your money memory and the root of your current financial situation.
I would definitely recommend along with We Should All be Millionaires and Financial Feminist. Bless these women for writing and speaking about money to help and empower others but mostly women.
I do love how at the end of the personal finance books I’ve read the authors are always like, “Congratulations! You read this book!”. None of my fantasy reads do that 🙄
In all seriousness though, I thoroughly enjoyed Barbara’s take on budgeting with a varied income. She gave a great introductory overview to insurance, investing/retirement accounts, and tackling debt. I truly feel inspired to take a deeper look at my finances; which is the whole reason I picked up the book to begin with.
Freelancers and SIPs make up a larger portion of the workforce than most realize and it’s about time there was financial advice on how we can go after our goals/dreams.
Excellent book for those in the service industry looking to get ahead in life. Good solid advice on how to navigate the pitfalls of the tipped industry. You can get ahead if you are in this industry and financial independence is possible. The author has worked in the industry for many years and is now sharing what she learned on her path to financial independence. This is a must read and a great book to gift those who are struggling to make ends meet while working as servers and bartenders. I would go so far as to recommend to those in the fast-food and retail industries as well.
Great personal finance information for those who don’t have the energy, time, or desire to think about their own future and their finances. Barbara does a great job breaking down all the basics and main topics in a relatable, easy to read way that all tipped workers will relate to. Shared a copy with my family members who work in the restaurant industry!

Straightforward and crystal clear, TIPPED offers a clear pathway for how to organize and manage your finances if you do not have traditional employment. Finally the bar as investing metaphor was so much fun to read!
Would definitely recommend, wasn’t necessarily what I thought it would be about but the info is great. A short read! Teaches good habits about making money as a server
