Love Potion by Rose Bak is the second book in the Magical Midlife series, and I thought it was a step up from the first one. This story follows Cami, a witch, and Stephen, a shapeshifter. When Cami attempts a spell to help her sister find love, it backfires—bringing Stephen to her instead. He insists they’re fated mates, but Cami resists the idea.
I found myself frustrated that Cami gave in to her sister’s pressure to do magic she didn’t feel ready for, but the writing flowed much better than in book one—it felt more natural and less forced overall.
It all comes down to expectations. Cami expected her spell to work magic to make shifter Stephen fall in love with her sister. She believed in the magic, and expected love to be the outcome. So they are delighted that he falls in love. But he’s not falling because of the spell.
Stephen is a shifter and recognizes his fated mate – Cami. Will she listen to him when he tries to tell her that her scent identifies her as his? Or will she blame herself for messing up another spell? They can always credit the magic with the HEA this brings to them, right?
Chamomile casts a spell to highlight her sister’s love as she was lonely and ready to have children. Almost immediately after the spell was cast Stephen, a wolfshifter , appears and tells Chamomile that she is his mate. Chamomile is taken with him but she cannot acknowledge her feelings because she cast a spell to bring Pepper’s mate not hers and feels not only guilty but a failure because her spell had backfired or failed. A gorgeous story that allows the reader to emote for the main characters and the others in the story.
The author has given us a wonderful story that introduces us to the Rosewater women with the focus on the eldest, Cami. After trying to cast a love spell for her sister, Cami is dismayed when Stephen, a wolf shifter, declares that Cami is his mate. The story keeps us turning the pages with humor, denial and steam.
