August 18, 2025Like Franklin Pierce, Tyler was a one term POTUS. Often called "the accidental president" because he was the first to become president as a vice-president because Harrison died about a month into his first term [can we even call Harrison a one termer?]. He actually fought the odds and did a lot in his term in office including a lot of firsts [married while president, married someone decades younger than him, didn't have a U.S. state funeral, nor was buried with an American flag, etc.]. Interesting life. Died as a "traitor" once the "Civil War" started though he fought hard for it not to happen. What a life.

A well written biography of our nation's 10th president. He was elected vice president with William Henry Harrison but became president upon Harrison's death 31 days after he was sworn in. Tyler served just one term choosing to not run given the political climate.
His wife died during his term but he remarried two years later, the first president to marry while in office although the ceremony was not in the White House or even in Washington D.C. He had 15 children with his two marriages and his grandson, Harrison Ruffin Tyler, is the son of John Tyler's 13th child Lyon Tyler, is still alive today aged 94.

I learned a lot about an overlooked figure in the pre-Civil era. Given more time maybe it could have been avoided.
