I am someone who loves holiday films and hosting themed parties, so “The Christmas Movie Cookbook” is right up my alley. Julia Rutland’s collection showcases food and drinks featured in or inspired by many seasonal titles. The selections range from traditional (“It’s a Wonderful Life” & Rotisserie Chicken) to unconventional (“Die Hard” & Linzer Star Cookies), classic (“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” & Roast Beef) to modern (“The Family Stone” & Breakfast Strata), and family-friendly (“Home Alone” & Plain Cheese Pizza) to more adult (“A Bad Moms Christmas” & Spiked Spiced Cider). The cookbook also includes entertaining tips and sample menus for different kinds of gatherings.

There were a few times when I thought the film and recipe pairing didn’t match up very well—for instance, “Last Christmas” and… salad? Something Yugoslavian would have made much more sense because of the main character’s background. Also, some of my favorite holiday movies were overlooked—I would have suggested frozen hot chocolate for “Serendipity,” clam chowder for “Sleepless in Seattle,” and something with a caviar garnish for “You’ve Got Mail.”

Overall, this is a fun and inspiring cookbook. I can’t wait to make the creamy mashed potatoes from “While You You Were Sleeping”!

What a fun book! Full of interesting recipes that tie in with your favorite Christmas movies. Personally, my favorite Christmas movie is "A Christmas Story", and I can't wait to make the Old-Fashioned Meatloaf in the book. This is a quick read, and I am sure that you will find yourself pulling recipes from it to entertain your friends. I am really looking forward to next Christmas, and the hosting of our annual "White House Christmas Party", to make several of these! Yum!

I didn't know anybody was as big of a Christmas movie buff as I am, but Julia Rutland has me beat! And she's also found a celebratory drink, savory food item, or sweet treat to pair with every last one of them. If you devour Christmas movies 365 days a year like my crew does… and you like to cook, Julia Rutland’s Christmas Movie Cookbook will be a welcome addition to your bookshelves.

Whether you're looking for recipes for a fun themed party, a cozy family night, or just want to have something to nibble on while decorating or wrapping gifts, The Christmas Movie Cookbook has something to inspire you!

In addition to the festive pictures which accompany the recipes, there is a beautifully written paragraph about each film. Just watch out, because if your holiday to-do list isn’t long enough already, Ms. Rutland’s clever wording will inspire you to check out any of these favorites you might have missed. Plus there’s a handy index complete with movie titles, actors' names, and ingredients for easy reference.

For recipes I’m planning to try, the cinnamon-orange breakfast rolls inspired by Arthur Christmas are at the top of my list. What a perfect thing to put together the evening before any special event.

As for the main course? Does braised brisket sound yummy? It’s inspired by The Holiday , which is my favorite Christmas romance. Or maybe a mouthwatering meatloaf, with sauteed vegetables hidden inside.

And if you're hungry for dessert how about some Krampus gingerbread men, complete with silly googly eyes and a menacing grimace? Or maybe chocolate frosted mint brownies are more to your taste? Even the Grinch himself will find something yummy to make in the Christmas Movie Cookbook!

The Christmas Movie Cookbook is exactly what it sounds like - a cookbook with recipes paired with holiday classics! I really enjoyed it and will make a few recipes this week, namely the really rich hot chocolate (paired with The Polar Express) and peanut butter cookies (paired with what else but the Peanuts classic, A Charlie Brown Christmas!) A lot of the movies were foreign to me, I have never heard of at least 40% of them, and I’m a huge Christmas movie fan. I would definitely check out a few based on the descriptions…I really appreciated that each movie came with a little blurb!

This cookbook might not release until September, but with the amount of "Christmas in July" emails and social-media posts I've seen lately, reading it now felt timely and apropos! Of course, I'm also officially starving now, and really want some festive food. :D

The whimsical photography throughout is utterly gorgeous, and probably my favorite part. (Can whoever came up with the decor please come decorate my place come Christmas?) :)

I love the menu ideas to round out a given viewing party--brilliant! (And all themed, no less!)

The variety of recipes mean there's truly something for everyone--and same goes for the movies. Given that, there's plenty kid- and family-friendly...and plenty that's not. I personally don't drink, and go for cleaner movie options--so there's enough I'll skip--but the author does a good job at making it (thankfully) fairly clear which is which here. She includes helpful movie recaps and clear instructions for making the recommended dish.

I might have geeked out at the inclusion of _Last Holiday_ and a cassoulet to go with it--both are definitely being earmarked for my December festivities! _A Christmas Carol_ and roast goose also sound particularly good...as do, frankly, all of the desserts. Chocolate-pecan snowballs! Sugar plums! Spiced pumpkin tarts! Linzer star cookies! Oh, man ... now I'm drooling. Ha!

For ongoing cookbook/movie enjoyment, I'd lean toward Rachel McMillan's A Very Merry Holiday Movie Guide; I'm a sucker for Hallmark-style movies!

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I'm a lover of movies as sell cookies so this cookbook was truly a delight for me. Every year at the beginning if December I pull out all my Christmas movies and watch them throughout the month ending with A Christmas Story on Christmas Eve. I've never thought about having a party by choosing a movie for the theme and taking it from there but after reading this cookbook I look forward to just that. In the beginning you get a set of tips that range from choosing a menu, the diets of your guest, to picking a theme. It's a fantastic check list that will help anyone planning such a party be able to make arrangements from start to finish. I can't read a new cookbook without at least trying a few recipes so I picked out a few that interested me. The first recipe I tried was the Guacamole-Stuffed Eggs from Rise of the Guardians. I make Deviled Eggs often so I like to try new versions all the time. It was easy to make and if you enjoy guacamole this is a recipe for you. Next I made Marinara Sauce from Elf for my spaghetti. I love the movie and the sauce turned out well so I'll definitely be making it again. Being from the south I love ham so I made the Hickory Honey Ham from Christmas with the Kranks. This was a keeper recipe, the ham was quite tasty. I look forward to trying more recipes from other movies I love and to watching some movies I haven't seen.and then making those recipes!

So stinkin’ FUN! I loved the recipes linked to the movies and found this to be such a fun book to read. From a single cheese pizza (Home Alone), to hot cocoa (Polar Express), to a Hickory Honey Ham (Christmas with the Kranks)- there is literally something for everyone in this cookbook! I wish I had this when my kids were younger, as it would have made for a fun Christmas tradition. This was a holiday delight!

What a fun cookbook! The author artfully matches recipes with holiday movies, inspired by food and beverages consumed in the flicks. In The Family Stone, a breakfast strata features prominently, and fans of Trading Places will know why the recommended recipe is Brown Sugar-Cured Salmon... Broken down into six categories, this cookbook is great for browsing and putting together a holiday movie playlist, as well as for finding a surprisingly delicious treat to prepare for family and friends. Useful conversion charts and index included.

The Christmas Movie Cookbook has recipes that are inspired by the movies they reference and may not be a dish specifically mentioned in the film. The author has dotted the pages with interesting tidbits about the shows, with movies from children's, to holiday, and to adult favorites. The cookbook has a good introduction, including tips about entertaining and holiday menu options.

The recipe sections are listed below, with some of the standout dishes.

Beverages: Really Rich Hot Chocolate; Spiked Spiced Cider

Breakfast & Breads: Buckwheat Pancakes; Chapati; Yorkshire Pudding with Herbs

Appetizers& Soups: Seafood and Sausage Gumbo; Hearty Vegetable Stew

Salad & Sides: Quinoa, Kale and Sweet Potato Salad; Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Main Dishes: General Tso's Chicken; Roast Turkey with Pomegranate Sauce; Corned Beef and Cabbage; Chicken Pot Pie

Desserts: Three-Layer Mint Brownies; "Peanuts" Butter Cookies; Linzer Star Cookies; Christmas Pudding

Based on the feeling of the movies, the traditions they may invoke, The Christmas Movie Cookbook is a great gift idea for the movie lover. This cookbook is interesting and inviting, making it one that I would recommend to others.

This is the perfect book for Christmas lovers and bakers. This is the perfect companion book for holiday movies. This cookbook includes recipes to go along with your favorite Christmas movies and maybe help introduce you to some new to you holiday movies. One example is Christmas pudding. This is an old fashioned recipe that maybe ole Scrooge would have eaten in A Christmas Carol. They include a write up about the movie and what the recipe was either from the movie or inspired by the movie. I can think of so many fun movie nights using this cookbook. There's a really nice recipe for hot chocolate to go along with the Polar Express. Perfect for the whole family. All your family's favorite movies are included; White Christmas, Home Alone, Rudolph, It's a Wonderful Life and Christmas with the Kranks to just name a few. This is a really fun and creative new cookbook. And don't forget to pull it out for Christmas in July too!

What impressed me most was the wide and varied range of Christmas movies cited! Some of the recipes had only the most tangential connection to the movie they were listed with (a character attended a meal that included mashed potatoes, for example) but it was still a fun read. There were attractive pictures for most of the recipes and the ingredient lists and instructions were clear and easy to follow.

This would be a nice gift for movie buffs and people who really get into Christmas. It also makes a very useful and appealing "general" gift for when you need to find something for your uncle's new girlfriend, the office gift swap, etc. Almost anyone can connect to this and find it enjoyable.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

This was a quick, fun read of a cookbook. Basic recipes for the most part, with interesting tie-ins to various Christmastime films. I appreciated Ms Rutland's addition of several less-obvious Christmas movies (a few new-to-me ones that I'll have to track down!), making this a fresh cookbook for people to enjoy.

Christmas in July was in full swing around here and it was the perfect time to enjoy this fun new cookbook!

I love Christmas, I love baking and I love cookbooks so this was perfect for me.

The Christmas Movie Cookbook features recipes for everyone's favorite Christmas movies.
Everything from The Polar Express Hot Chocolate to Guacamole-Stuffed Eggs from Rise of the Guardians, the plain cheese pizza we all remember from Home Alone to the must-have Hickory-Honey Ham from Christmas with the Kranks! The Christmas/Holiday movies featured covered just about everything... children's favorites to old classics and even those "that's not Christmas" movies like Gremlins and Die Hard. Tend to like the more "spooky" side of Christmas? No worries, those are covered too with The Nightmare Before Christmas and Krampus!

I had so much fun with this book! Oh my gosh, I lost count of all the recipes I made note of to try! Seriously, I want to make almost all of them! Of course, I started with one of my favorite movies, The Santa Clause! Those Giant Chocolate Chunk Cookies are amazing!!

I love the pictures that were included, the layout (at least on Kindle) is festive. Each sections is broken up making it easy to find things like Salads, Drinks, Desserts, etc. And at the beginning of each section is the list of all recipes featured along with the movie. This made finding things extremely easy, especially if we wanted a specific movie instead of recipe. Along with the recipe instructions, the movie details are also included which is a nice little touch in case someone hasn't seen the movie yet.

An overall fantastic cookbook, perfect for anyone who loves Christmas recipes and especially for those who love Christmas movies! Would make an absolutely fantastic gift! I had a copy already added to my Christmas Wish List!

Let me tell you right now — The Christmas Movie Cookbook by Julia Rutland is basically what happens when you watch way too many Hallmark-style movies and think, “Sure, I can make that perfect-looking pie while my life falls apart in a cozy, Pinterest-worthy way.” And honestly? I’m not mad about it.

This book is less chef hat, three-day baking project and more throw on a Christmas movie and make something that looks good on Instagram. It’s loaded with recipes for all the stuff you know the characters in those movies are baking — cookies, cocoa, cocktails, casseroles — like, if a snowman and a gingerbread house had a baby, this book would be its recipe binder. You’ve got Hot Cocoa Cupcakes, Christmas Morning Casserole, and more cookies than you could ever bake unless you’re trying to win over a grumpy widower who happens to be a secret prince.

Now, if you’re expecting these recipes to be straight from specific movies, slow your sleigh. A lot of these feel more inspired by the vibe than tied to an actual scene. Like sure, you could pretend that casserole showed up in The Holiday, but we all know Jude Law is not in the kitchen. Still, if you're not here to nitpick and just want to make cozy things while watching Elf for the 700th time, you'll have a blast.

I will say, the best part is how approachable these are — you do not need to be a pro. If you can use a measuring cup and know how to turn on an oven (or, like me, Google "how long do you bake sugar cookies again?"), you’re set. It’s the perfect book for those of us who want to feel festive without also weeping over a collapsed souffle.

So if you’re in the mood to drink something covered in whipped cream while Love Actually emotionally damages you again, this one’s a solid 4 out of 5 stars — fun, festive, and totally for people who want the magic of a Christmas movie, even if all you’ve got is your dog and a questionable bottle of peppermint schnapps.

In my household, we absolutely love Christmas movies! Not only are they a part of our holiday traditions, but if we're being honest my kids and I are known to watch them all throughout the year! They are some of our absolute favorites.

Aside from watching Christmas movies, we also love to cook/bake around the holidays too! Truly, how many holiday traditions revolve around food!?

When I heard about The Christmas Movie Cookbook, I knew it was going to be an absolute must have for our household and I couldn't wait to check it out. And I absolutely loved it! This featured some of our holiday favorites, with recipes that we cannot wait to try. Some of them are exactly what we would have expected: Roast Beef (Beast) from the Grinch, Hot Chocolate from Polar Express, and Cheese Pizza from Home Alone (admittedly, both my son and I both first guessed that it might be mac and cheese instead, but cheese pizza truly was a perfect recipe for this one too!) Others are a bit more loosely based on the movie--- where it takes place, things like that. Some recipes are more holiday specific, whereas others can be made all year long. The movies featured were classics as well as new favorites like The Christmas Chronicles. There were even recipes from those debatable holiday favorites like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon--- which made my husband super happy as well.

This cookbook was so much fun to read through, and we already have a list started to cook/bake as we watch these holiday favorites this season! If you're a die hard Christmas movie fan, this is an absolutely must have! I love it!

**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All thoughts are my own.

Almost everyone has a favorite Christmas movie; and in most Christmas movies, there is plenty of food and drink. Anyone who wants to make their Christmas more festive while watching Christmas movies, will want to pick up The Christmas Movie Cookbook: Recipes from Your Favorite Holiday Films
Besides fun and enticing recipes from favorite Christmas movies, Rutland has included entertaining tips as well as menu suggestions. Most of the recipes are fairly quick and easy, and are written in the traditional manner – ingredients listed first with step-by-step instructions following - making them easy-to-follow for everyone, whether beginning or advanced cooks. There are beautiful photographs of most of the dishes, which helps cooks decide what to cook next.

The ingredients are available at any mainstream grocery store – nothing fancy or hard to find - and most of the recipes call for ingredients that we have on our pantry shelves or freezers now, so we can avoid a trip to the store. There are also several suggested holiday menus that will bring the dishes together for get-togethers and parties that can be enjoyed by families and friends.

While this isn’t an all-purpose cookbook, it’s a good holiday cookbook and would make a good gift for someone who cooks or someone who watches and enjoys a lot of Christmas movies. It’s a good addition for any cookbook collection.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Element for an early copu of The Christmas Move Cookbook in exchange for an honest review.

There is nothing better than Christmas movies at the holidays to get you in the spirit and a new fun cookbook to fill the plates while viewing new and old favorites. Julia Rutland introduces each recipe with a movie tie in, she uses some of the classics like Its a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th St, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Home Alone with some unconventional ones; Anna and the Apocalypse, Rise of the Guardians or Die Hard (yes, this is a Christmas movie to me!). Some of these pairs make perfect sense to me (Really Rich Hot Chocolate with Polar Express) and some are more of a stretch (Quinoa, Kale & Sweet Potato Salad for Last Christmas). Each recipe includes a description of its movie pairing, an ingredient list and instructions. I have an early ARC so I do not have a lot of photos but the ones I do are bright and cheery. The recipes are not all that original (meatloaf, sweet potato pie, General Tso's Chicken) there are a few I will be testing out and look forward to add them to my repertoire (Whiskey-Pomegranate Sour, Japanese Christmas Cake, Chapati). Overall, this is a very fun concept and a unique addition to your holiday viewings and gatherings.

While browsing social media one day in November, I came across an ad that included The Christmas Movie Cookbook by Julia Rutland. One of the kids ended up buying me this book for Christmas.

This colorful and fun cookbook includes recipes from some of your favorite holiday films--or films with memorable Christmas scenes--through the decades: The Polar Express, Little Women, Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone, Christmas in Connecticut, Gremlins, Elf, and more.

Separated into typical cookbook section format, the glossy pages include beautiful photographs and a discussion of the movie from which each recipe comes. Rutland opens with her introduction, tips for entertaining, and holiday menu ideas based upon the recipes found inside, then concludes with metric charts for those outside of the United States, a helpful index, and information about herself.

What I love most about The Christmas Movie Cookbook is the variety of recipes included and the diverse types of movies featured. Whether you are looking for new holiday menus to inspire your entertaining, seeking to find some interesting pop culture tidbits, or just want to try some new recipes, The Christmas Movie Cookbook is an excellent resource to explore.

I absolutely adore this tribute to Christmas movies in cookbook form! The author's inclusion of nontraditional films like "Anna and the Apocalypse," "Little Women," "Krampus," and "Lethal Weapon" makes it even more fun - and hello, "Holiday in the Wild!" There's literally something here for everyone. Each recipe has a sidebar blurb about the the film that inspired it, and the food photography is festive and plentiful. I especially liked the addition of sample holiday menus and entertaining tips, and with the exception of a few holiday-specific dishes Buche de Noel, these recipes are evergreen (pardon the pun) and able to be enjoyed year-round. A must-have for Christmas culinarians, holiday film fans, theme nights, and anyone who's hosting family or friends during the season. It would make a great host/hostess gift as well! Pro tip: whip up one of the yummy beverages, like Spiked Spiced Cider or Mocha Martini, to enjoy while cooking or baking.

I received a digital galley of this book in exchange for an honest review, and loved this one so much that I plan to purchase a hardcover for my permanent collection.

Christmas movies are a guilty pleasure! So are special Christmas meals! The Christmas Movie Cookbook combines both and the result is mouthwatering collection of recipes and creative suggestions to combine them into party menus.

The recipes are organized into traditional groupings; beverages, appetizers and soups, salads and sides, desserts, etc. Some are inspired by a Christmas movie while others were part of that movie. For example erwtensoep, a traditional Dutch pea soup was inspired by Santa Claus speaking Dutch in Miracle on 34th Street while Creamy Mashed Potatoes was featured in the Christmas dinner in the movie While You Were Sleeping. As usual, my favorites are the desserts. I can’t wait to try Japanese Christmas Cake (Tokyo Godfathers) and Spiced Pumpkin Tarts (Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas). The Christmas Movie Cookbook is not to be read while you are hungry! 5 stars.

I wasn’t originally planning to mention this book on here. I figured, it’s a cookbook, I’m not talking about cookbooks. But then it turned out to be more than a cookbook.

On Monday, I loaded up the first Hallmark Christmas movie of the season. I saw everyone on the Hallmark Christmas Movie Club posting pictures of the wonderful snacks they’d made. And I had nothing! I had tried to come up with a nice movie snack and I had failed. I popped a bag of popcorn and that was that.

Later that day, I ordered this cookbook.

This book is a lot of fun!
Not only does it give you recipe ideas but it pairs them with particular movies. Here’s the most impressive thing: I hadn’t even heard of some of the movies and they sound wonderful!

This book has movies that would appeal to families, kids or just adults.
You could plan entire Christmas movie marathon meals with this book. There’s everything from appetizers, main dishes, side dishes and desserts.

I’d definitely recommend grabbing this book.

Thank you NetGalley, Julia Rutland and Simon Element for the ARC of
The Christmas Movie Cookbook. This is my personal review.
I love cookbooks and this one was the most fun cookbook I have read. What a great idea to put together a cookbook with recipes from Christmas movies. These recipes can be for any time of the year but to have a recipe from a movie and then to watch that movie for a special new holiday tradition to start this year
I have picked out so many recipes I am going to make from this book.
The recipes are just what we all need in our lives. I have many times wanted a movie and thought to myself how much I would like to make a dish that they are having in eat.
And then to top it off besides the great variety of recipes the photos are mouthwatering!
This cookbook will make a fantastic gift for a cook or film buff!

Browsing through this cookbook makes me want to watch cozy Christmas movies, wrap myself in a warm blanket, and make Christmas cookies! Even though it's May as I write this review! I definitely see myself using the cookbook every holiday season, and matching it with favorite holiday movies. The movies inspiring the recipes range from the expected (Elf, Miracle on 34th Street) to the off beat (Bad Mom's Christmas) and Die Hard. Because, yes, 100%, Die Hard is a Christmas movie!

There is a lot of emphasis on meat and wheat, so there isn't a great variety for people with allergies or dietary restrictions. However, most of the recipes do seem family friendly. I like the tips for hosting a great Christmas party at the beginning of the book, as well.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.

If I had my way, Christmas would be a year-round holiday. I enjoy cooking and baking, too, so reading The Christmas Movie Cookbook was a top priority :-)

The cookbook has gorgeous photography! Most of the recipes are accompanied by a corresponding photo with Christmas-themed backgrounds. The ingredients are easy to find, nothing that is going to send you to specialty grocery stores to complete your shopping. The difficulty and time required ranges from beginner/fast to more advanced/adventurous. There’s definitely something for everyone. The recipes include every course, including cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. The book is also filled with short descriptions of many Christmas movies for inspiration.

Is it almost December? Can’t wait!

This has been one of the funnest and most entertaining cookbooks I have read up until now. Not only does it give you tasty recipes for your holiday season but also provides a holiday movie to read about for each one. A lot of them I had heard of and was taken down a memory lane trip but was interesting to find some I had never heard of and look forward to finding this coming seasons holidays and trying out the recipe to go along with them.

It also provides you with tips for throwing the best holiday get togethers you can like setting up your music list or how to arrange seating for any kind of party and lots more great tidbits you can mark off your checklist as you go.

Some of my favorites were... The Salted Caramel & Fudge Milkshake, The Orange Cinnamon Rolls, and The Burgermeister's Perfect Burger.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing a copy for my honest review.
