'Oh good, it's finally over.' Should not be my thoughts on a series ending, but here we are. Truth be told, I have not particularly enjoyed this series for a number of volumes now; it went downhill faster than a rolling stone, but because I had the tomfoolery of ordering all five of the volumes, I read it to get my money's worth.
Lol, I still don't think I got my money's worth, and if there was ever a manga I've come across that I would discourage people from buying it's this. At almost $17 a book there is a lot left to be desired here. The art is weak, the characters are shallow, and the story is paper thin, all in a rather scant sized number of pages for each volume.
My biggest gripe with this series is that its two selling points are non-existent. This is neither a series depicting an adult woman in her thirties, nor is it about the character's love of reading and books. Tsukina acts more like a teen than an adult, and for someone supposedly in her thirties, she has very little opinions of her own (which, lbr, would still be a problem if she was actually a teen too). Tsukina is just there in her own story, and it's boring. Ffs, this lady doesn't even have a mind of her own to pick out her own wedding dress, and leaves the decision to her fiancé *after* he tells her he's not even wearing anything new to their wedding, just his dress uniform. Cut to a scene where she's immediately trying on a dress too tight. Yeah.
Tsukina claims that Othell is her home now and she's made a life here, but has she really? We have only ever seen her interact with the two other saviours, and Il and his guards. Her world exists in Il's bubble only. When she does make a new friend outside of these groups, we get a scene with Il rather rudely asking where the person, Bran, is from all while Bran is actually a paying customer of Tsukina's shop. Nice for business there, buddy. Ofc, we are expected to ignore how red flag-y this is from Il, because *gasp!* Bran IS bad. But for me, it's the unintentionally bad scenes like this that only highlight that Tsukina's life here is actually kinda bleak. We see her make two friends outside of Il and his guards, and both are met with suspicion from Il. Her shop is only ever frequented by Il and his guards, and Bran, the book peddler and patron. For this world being her home, she sure has done very little to immerse herself in it, and I find it depressing.
As for the story, get ready for lots of build up that literally leads to nothing. Any drama or threat or risk is neatly solved and fixed in a few short panels that there is no point caring about the story or characters at all. The breakneck speed of its pacing does not help with this either. It's very hard to invest in a story that doesn't know how to deal with conflict and poofs it away. Why bother adding any of this drama and plot at all?
Finally, it's the end, and God shows up to congratulate Tsukina on a job well done, because her *just existing* in the world was exactly what the world needed! The end. Massive eyeroll. This ending works only if we got an actual character out of Tsukina, but we did not.
This series was a huge let down, and is getting dumped in the donation bin bc I do not want to own it.
