When the stalkee becomes the stalker...

“Rubin makes the most out of an uber-creepy premise in this superior medical thriller.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Liza Larkin, a recent med-school graduate on the cusp of her pathology internship, isn’t like most people. She would rather study the human brain or pound the heavy bag at the gym than spend time with others, and as an outsider she doesn’t let societal norms confine her.

So when a stranger’s picture sends Liza’s schizophrenic mother deeper into psychosis, Liza does a reverse-image search to identify him. Upon discovering he is a trauma surgeon at a Massachusetts teaching hospital, she impulsively changes her pathology residency program of choice to his center.

She wants to be near him. She wants to know what he’s up to. She wants to protect her family.

See you in the ring soon, Dr. Sam Donovan. The bell has rung.

Liza Larkin has Schizoid personality, introverted with a mother who is Schizophrenic, her father is deceased. She is a pathology resident who changes her hospital choice to spy on a surgeon at this hospital who has randomly shown up in private photos. She is a bit paranoid and the story far fetched but it kept my interest and I enjoyed the action at the end. Liza will do whatever it takes to bring this surgeon who she thinks is a murderer to justice with a nice little twist at the end.

A fast paced medical thriller full of tension and suspense. What happens when the stalker becomes the stalkeee???? A few surprises and plenty of heart stopping moments. I devoured this book in one sitting and finally turned the last page at 2.am.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.

Liza is a pathology resident who has a choice of where she wants to work. She chooses a hospital where Dr Donovan works because she realizes he seems to be someone of interest when her mom recognizes him in a photo. Many photos actually. Her mom is schizophrenic and believes someone is watching her. But Liza knows Dr Donovan is guilty of something, and begins to watch Dr Donovan - the stalker becomes the stalkee.

This is a thriller, and one where you know from the beginning who the guilty party is. However the path the story takes - following Liza's mental route to figure out how to nail him for what he is guilty for - is what makes this book so fun to read. She is very intelligent, and as she figures out more, you root for her. Yes there are many people who don't believe her at all and this felt tired since this is typical of a thriller. But I was on the edge of my seat many times throughout and made me want to know how it ends. Any medical novel that holds my interest and brings the tension is a favorite of mine.

I'm a fan of unreliable narrators so I found this to be a gripping read. I loved the glimpse into Liza's mind. She's tough, resourceful, and doesn't always play by the rules, and yet she's a very likable character. I really enjoyed the hospital setting too. I would recommend this book to fans of psychological thrillers, medical thrillers, and suspense. Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this unusual and interesting book.

Well Done!

I Have to admit, any medical type novel is a 5 * novel to me. I am completely bias to the medical genre and Rubin did not disappoint.

If you love medical suspense, then this ones for you.

A++ for Rubin's character Liza Larkin and Rubin's in-depth explanation of Liza's, mental health disorder.

I Enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next one.

In Carrie Rubin's latest medical thriller, Fatal Rounds (Indigo Dot Press (2022), recent medical school grad, Liza Larkin is starting her pathology internship at Titus McCall, a renowned hospital though her #2 choice. For Liza, a brilliant and eclectic doctor with a brain like no other, she could have gone to her #1, but picked this one because of the popular and successful Dr. Sam Donovan. She's not stalking him. In fact, she thinks he's stalking her and by working with him, hopes to find out why. With her father dead, her mother schizophrenic, and her brother mildly depressed, it falls to Liza--with her superior intellect, her clever ability to connect dots, and her own considerable mental issues bordering on autism to be the strength behind her family. That means stopping anyone who endangers her mother or brother. Because of her own medical history, those who might support her are reluctant to do so, but as she finds more facts that can't be denied, ugly truths no one wants revealed begin to take shape. For Liza, the threats that brings to her have no weight against protecting those who need her.

I've read many of Carrie Rubin's books--The Cruise Ship Lost My Daughter and The Bone Curse (click for reviews) for example. Being a medical doctor herself, developing a credible plot for a medical thriller is second nature. If this is your preferred genre, do yourself a favor and start reading her books. For this one, here are a few lines that stick with me:

"...I am indeed an island. Everyone else is on the mainland."

"I don't listen to music. Nature and my thoughts are enough."

"She [Liza's schizophrenic mother] chose my name, Liza, because it sounds like the German word for quiet: leise. Probably because she had so little quiet in her own head."

“You are not a list of symptoms, Liza. You are not a diagnosis."

"Like a good doctor only a whole lot better"

I don't find a lot of medical thrillers that are credible to their genre and put me as a layperson into the action. Carrie does this with ease. Highly recommended for those who love thrillers, fast-moving plots, and quirky characters.

Flippin' Flapjacks! 😳😯🤯😳😯

Fluffer nutter cluster bar! Delectably dark & bittersweet! If you loved The Maid, Never Saw Me Coming or Jane Doe, you'll devour this genius novel with a medical twist! I knew I was going to love it being a medical thriller, but the fun twist of Liza, being different and possibly on the autistic spectrum made it so much more intriguing. And boy did this NOT disappoint! This novel hit the spot!

Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: Liza is starting her first year internship as a pathologist. She's a loner, doesn't take social cues well and doesn't like socialization, happy to be on her own. After her Father's sudden death years ago, her mother dealing with schizophrenia and in a home now - Liza has an agenda. Finding a man that was in photos of her past. And when she comes to realize he's a trauma surgeon, she changes her hospital choice to his. She needs to know who he is. What he does. What he's about. Because she has a hunch and the connection is sinister.

I couldn't put this novel down. Think Grey's Anatomy with a dark twist! Wholy cannolis was this so delish and decadent I wanted more. The ending was superb and unreal. I loved cheering on Liza like crazy and even though she may have been a "bad" character, or a villain, I adored her and loved her. I gobbled up and overstuffed myself on this novel like a thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings! Undeniably juicy, salacious and tempting.

I didn't expect to read this one so quickly, but once I started I couldn't put it down. Liza is a really interesting character, and at first I wasn't even sure I could trust her as a narrator, which only added to the fun. Her cat and mouse game with Dr. Donovan (or maybe I should say her "sparring" given the book's title) was juicy and made for a riveting story. I couldn't wait to see how it would play out, and I wasn't disappointed. Great supporting characters too.

I'd love to read another book with Liza in it! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an early review copy.

Stalking a stalker--I was intrigued right away. My interest deepened when I got to know the main character, Liza. I couldn't get enough of her spunky awkwardness. And Dr. Donovan was an endless mystery I was dying to solve.

Things got intense and the suspense skyrocketed as the mystery deepened. I couldn't put this down. Then things slowed a bit before the final climax and I felt a little let down but it quickly picked back up and flowed into a satisfying ending.

The heroine in this thriller is unique. She deals with mental issues that make her extremely anti-social, almost psychopathic (but she has a good heart. She's just graduated from med school and is a pathology resident at a hospital she chose because of a surgeon there who she noticed in several old pictures she went through after her father died. She wants to know why Dr. Donovan is stalking her and her mom. When she begins studying him more on her rounds, what she discovers is more sinister than she ever imagined.

Rubin always creates awesome, scary villains in her books that keep my shiver-alarm going off non-stop as I read. This book is no different. The villain was well-done. And Liza, the heroine, has to decide whether she's going crazy like her mom or whether she's on the right track of a serial-killer. This kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn't wait to finish it to put me out of my suspense. Well, done, Ms. Rubin. Again, you've created a thrilling masterpiece.

Fatal Rounds is a medical mystery thriller. I kept telling myself that I would read just one more chapter, but I could not do it. I had to know what would happen next and finally finished the book at 3:00AM ! 😴

Liza Larkin is on track to study pathology and the brain. While putting together a photo album for her schizophrenic mother she notices a man lurking in some of her outside family photos. When she shows the photo to her mom, it sends her into a deep psychosis.

Liza does a reverse image search and discovers that the man is a trauma surgeon at her second choice hospital for interning. She impulsively decides to do her internship at the same hospital. That is when she begins to stalk the stalker. She has a hunch that he is up to something sinister and her hunch is right.

A really good book invites the reader to use their imagination to fill in details, or even to come up with their own interpretations of the entire story. Fatal Rounds is just such a book. The central character, Liza Larkin, is a pathology resident at a hospital in Massachusetts. She has chosen the hospital specifically because she has become suspicious of one of the hospital’s surgeons, Dr. Donovan, who attended her father’s funeral, much to the horror of Liza’s schizophrenic mother.

Liza’s obsessive investigation of Dr. Donovan brings her into possession of evidence that implicates him in a number of deaths. Her highly atypical mind gives her an unusual ability to concentrate on her goal, and she becomes fixated on bringing Donovan to justice.

That’s the basic plot of the book. But the real meat of Fatal Rounds is in subtle details and ambiguities. It’s not so much about what happens as it is the reader’s interpretation of what happens. That’s why I don’t want to talk too much about specifics; lest I color your reading of the book with my own views.

This book is a great medical thriller, but more than that, it’s just a flat-out great story, and I highly recommend it to anyone, even if medical thrillers aren’t a genre you typically read. It gives you some things to chew on long after you close the book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review!

I don’t know how to describe this book other than mediocre. Was it bad? certainly not, but was it good? not really. The plot wasn’t anything we haven’t seen before, it failed to create an air of suspense and just wasn’t something that stood out. But I will admit I absolutely adore our girlboss mc.

Definitely a thriller where you know immediately who is the killer are not my cup of tea, however this book has even more issues.
The protagonist is unlikeable and her psychological condition is used and mentioned only to justify her actions. The story is paper thin and overburdened with unneeded information.
The only good thing was the option to listen at 1.5x speed.
Waste of time.

If I have dark circles under my eyes blame it on Carrie Rubin’s latest book, Fatal Rounds.
I have read many of Carrie Rubin’s books, including her Benjamin Oris series and the book she wrote under her penname Morgan Mayer. Fatal Rounds, in my opinion, is her best book so far. That is not to say that the other books were not great. This one is simply greater.
So, what’s so great about it? Well, for one thing it’s her main character. Liza Larkin is a spirited character in spite of her flaws: she has difficulty fitting in, whether with her colleagues and social event stress her. She has a schizoid personality disorder. By her own admission she can be deceitful, has a history of aggression, meddles with criminal evidence.
However, her deceased father’s words often come to her mind: You are not a list of symptoms, Liza.
On the flip side, she is dedicated to her work in pathology, has a few close friends, has a concerned and loving relationship with her delusional mother who is in a care unit. She is also grieving the loss of her father with whom she had a close relationship, and in many ways still does. She will always stand up for those who are victimized, even at the risk of being ostracized and regarded as delusional. She is a character with courage, persistence and a sense of humor.
Liza’s background is a healthy one. No absent parent, abuse or neglect. Hers is a stable, loving childhood relationship which is wonderful to read.
All of this makes Liza Larkin a believable and sympathetic character.
Sure, some (very few) might question her integrity in her tactics to prove her suspicions that one of her colleagues is a murderer. Or, one might cheer, her sense of conviction and guts.
Besides reading about an endearing yet odd character, I really enjoyed all the medical knowledge regarding autopsies and pathology. As a physician herself, Carrie Rubin credibly takes us into the morgue as she describes so vividly the smells and sounds that you are in the morgue with her.
The novel is written in the first person which adds intimacy towards the main character. Carrie’s tone is without pretention and often sparkles with a sense of humor. Her writing is smooth as she navigates between different scenes be it at the hospital, with her mother at her special care facility, with colleagues and her own investigation into the murder suspect.
The murder’s M.O. is brilliant. Of course, you’ll have to read the book to find out what it is.
This is Carrie Rubin’s first novel in the Liza Larkin series and hopefully, Ms. Robin is churning up number 2 in this series.

I'm not sure how I feel about Liza's character. I realize her personality disorder made her the way she was, but it is amazing how many people tolerated her actions.

While we are told up front who the killer is as Liza works to prove his guilt, there are many instances where you wonder if he is really that bad.

It is a fast paced thriller novel, and am curious what the second book can hold.

4.75 stars rounded! This book was another great medical thriller read, with some killer (no pun intended 😜) twists in the last few chapters! 0.25 stars taken off because this wasn’t a book I was constantly rushing to get back to reading, and it didn’t grip me as much as some other thrillers. That being said, it was a short read, and packed a lot of action into the pages for sure!

I liked Liza Larkin, her character struggles with interactions with others and the book gives insight into that from her unique perspective as well as providing a suspenseful case of a serial murderer who is getting away with murder while showing the world a bland innocence. The creepy factors were a bit much to endure the feelings of being threatened throughout, but that’s just me; it might be just down someone else’s alley.

Carrie Rubin’s Fatal Rounds was a delicious novel, rife with suspense and intrigue that, for me, found its feet just a little too late in the game.

Protagonist Liza Larkin is entering her residency in pathology at the Titus McCall Medical Center. She’s smart, driven and experiences the world through the lens of her self-described “schizoid personality disorder”. She relies on lifelong lessons from both her psychiatrist and her parents regarding appropriate social behaviors to guide her daily interactions, though Liza still misses important cues and is often perceived as “odd” and quirky. Additionally, she has had to learn to control her angry and sometimes violent outbursts, and long standing relationships for Liza are few and far between. Her mother resides in a private mental health facility, her father is deceased and her musician brother survives in a cloud of depression. When Liza’s mother experiences a particularly alarming “episode”, Liza discovers a shadowy man who appears in the background of a number of family photographs—photos that seem to have triggered her mother’s angst and most recent decline. Liza’s mission to discern the man’s identity is quickly realized, at which time she commits to discovering why he, Dr. Sam Donovan, is seemingly stalking her family. In the process, she finds far more than she bargained for, placing her career, her family and her own life in jeopardy.

Liking Liza as a character is a difficult ask. Her strengths and “humanity” are revealed so slowly that, for the first half of the book, there seems to be no context to who she is. Rubin opens by placing Liza in a setting that would have been far more powerful had the reader been given an opportunity to invest in her and understand her actions and reactions. It took too much of a concerted effort, and an inordinate number of pages, to unwind her motivations and situate them in terms of her own mental health challenges. Additionally, while her close relationship with her father appears to eclipse his death, neither his life, their connection, nor his passing are explored to the extent necessary to make Liza’s behaviors believable. Finally, the reader is, throughout, expected to buy into Liza’s constantly recalibrating moral compass—something I was never quite comfortable simply attributing to her personality disorder. The echoes of psychopathy in Liza reverberated far too loudly for her to be sympathetic.

Character challenges aside, the pages turned quickly, and I found myself invested in the outcome—which, for me, makes this a worthwhile read.

Thank you to netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review. This was an intense medical thriller that I had a great time reading. It centers around Liza Larkin who has a schizoid personality, but doesn't let it stop her from pursuing her goals. She wants to be a pathologist to study the brain because of her diagnosis and her mother being schizophrenic. While she's making a photo album for her mother she notices a strange man is in three of her photos. One of her graduation, one at her father's funeral and another that might be the same guy. On a whim she changes her residency to Titus mcall hospital to find out just who this man is. He turns out to be a trauma surgeon named Sam Donavan. Shes convinced Sam is a stalker and an unaliver and takes the steps she needs to prove it, even though they aren't quite ethical. I love the turnaround of the stalkee become the stalker. At some points it got a bit slow with so much description, but overall it was a good read for those that like thrillers. Tw: mental health issues, death, unaliving

A drama with a medical setting that uses a boxing metaphor.

Liz Larkin is determined to prove that a respected trauma surgeon is intent on doing her harm. She selects the hospital he works at to do her internship and immediately begins her campaign to find out what he's done. Her backstory of a history of mental health issues makes her a very unreliable narrator. I hoped, however, that this was going to make the story unique.

As everyone around her is convinced that Liz is losing it and having some kind of delusional break from reality with her accusations and suspicions, she continues on her mission. When everything ends up exactly as I worried it would, I was extremely disappointed and let down. I didn't like Liz and the whole plot required more suspension of disbelief than I can manage. I was looking for a medical thriller and this was not it. The most interesting aspects of the narrative were the actual details about pathology and disease. I can't recommend it.

A medical thriller about Liza and what she would do to protect her fragile family. Her mother is schizophrenic, her father has passed and her brother is depressed. Liza chooses to continue her training in the medical field at a hospital where Dr. Donovan is working. She feels like he is stalking her, so in turn she stalks him. This started because her mother saw a picture of Dr. Donovan and she goes into a deeper episode. That starts her curiosity. Liza is a strong and smart character. The other characters play well into the story line. A very riveting thriller that is entertaining.

Liza has finished her MD and gets matched up with a hospital that wasn’t really her first choice but one that she’s chosen for a purpose. Armed with her boxing skills and a determination unhindered by ‘normal’ social skills, she’s focused on finding out the truth behind her father’s death. A renowned surgeon, who just also happens to be a successful sociopath, becomes her target, and their sparring continues round by round awaiting a decision or a knockout. Fatal Rounds could have been SUCH a hit (for me at least) if Rubin had taken more time to flesh out the beginning of the book a bit more. As it is, it feels like the reader is dropped in the middle of the story and then taken on an unexpected and bumpy ride til the end. I really loved the idea of these two very similar characters being on opposite sides and sparring with their wits and cunning. Having the same personality traits allows them to read each other in a way that another character would not be able to. The problem, however, is that their connection to one another is never truly established for much of the story, so it feels like they are unnecessary antagonists. Once I did finally figure out how and why they are connected, it was incredibly difficult to buy into the idea. I understand that part of the mystery hinges on the reader not understanding the truth, but I think it does the book a disservice. I am also not a fan of using mental illness, or difficulty as an excuse for a character to be unreliable. Rubin leans heavily on that trope, which again does the book no favors.

It Also doesn’t help that the characters were a little flimsy when it comes to development, and although the setting is very specific, it was quite generic.

Overall, the book was ok, but had the potential to be really fantastic. I look forward to seeing what else Carrie Rubin has to offer. I will definitely read from them again.

Fatal Rounds is a solid medical mystery/thriller with a good pace to the plot, good plotting in general, and strong characters.
Fatal Round's greatest strength lies in its characters; Liza, our main protagonists, is a or borderline psychopath (or maybe sociopath, I lack the knowledge to correctly differentiate) and this makes her fundamentally interesting. The author does a good job of maintaining her likability and relatability against her anger issues, dissociative tendencies, and willingness operate out of social norms (breaking the laws, manipulating, blackmailing, etc.) There are some moments where her character can come across as a little too relatable/just simply autistic when a part of me wanted her to just be a little more "inhuman."
Sam Donnovan, as the antagonist, is fantastic. He is intelligent, wonderfully threatening, and constantly elevating the tension, or the threat level. He navigates and manipulates the world around himself and Liza with delicious competence, constantly driving her to higher and higher extremes with seeming effortless ease. The boxing match motif the characters share is well utilized throughout the narrative, and they are constantly allowed to interact and affect the plot as they compete with one another.
The prose is solid and the plot, thanks greatly to how dangerous Dr. Donnovan is allowed to be, is strong.
I listened to the audio book and the reader did a fine job.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fatal Rounds by Carrie Rubin is a brilliant medical thriller about dedication and motivation in the name of justice! This is a story about God's complex and delusional power! This is a story about being different, acknowledge that and do all you can to fit in. Sometimes it's not easy and you must take the matter into your own hands but what else you can do if no one listens to you? This thriller is filled with heart-stopping moments.

What a fantastic character is Liza Larkin! It's so interesting to learn about her, and her challenges with the daily things that we do not even notice because they come naturally to us. Liza's brain is wired differently so she will process things differently. There is a lot of learnt behaviour and if she gets confused she will ask for advice from her dead father.

Liza just graduated med school. She loves what she does, she loves the human body, especially the brain! Liza has anger issues so she will spend a lot of time in the gym to let the steam out.

Liza just started her pathology residency program at Massachusetts Teaching Hospital to be close to successful Dr. Sam Donovan. She doesn't know why but she has this feeling that something is happening! Liza is dedicated to finding out - what the hell is going on!

Can't wait to dive into the next book!
