I'm about to make the seven deadly sins my bitch See this tattoo across my stomach? Yeah, the one with seven crazy runes. Ignore the pink one on the far right, that's Sarah. I love her, but she's not one of my four. That was a hard lesson to learn. I tried being loyal to her. Even went to a stinky Succubi Den to get a snack or two just to stay alive. Well, that didn't work out, and now I'm stuck trying to charge some dusty old relic my mother left behind. Turns out there's some crazy destiny tied to my tattoo, which is actually a birthmark and all about the end of the world. Sounds fun, sort of, not really. I've met rune #1, and he wasn't at all what I'd expected. It wasn't love at first sight. Maybe hate at first sight. Pretty sure he hates my guts. But that's okay, maybe rune #2 will bring him around. This end of the world stuff is just getting started, and I have a feeling one of my very own sins is the one stirring the pot. The Incubus King, what sin might he be? Lust... my favorite one. Bring it on. Author's Note: This is a fast-burn reverse harem story. It includes explicit language and sexual situations. Intended for audiences 18 years and older. As this is a series, there will be a cliffhanger.
USA Today Bestselling Author J.R. Thorn is a Reverse Harem Romance author. All her books are written in the same world except for co-write books, so be sure to check out the recommended reading order listed above or on the website! (She'll also admit to having an unhealthy obsession with magical tattoos and alpha males.)
I had a difficult time with this book. I felt like I was constantly in the dark. Things were happening or being talked about like I should know what's going on, but it's not explained. I like the succubus idea and the sex scenes were hot, but there's too much plot. I'm not totally sure of what's happening and why there are 7 important people, but 4 are more important? Agh, my brain.
Nope.. just nope. Full disclosure I picked up this "SET" on audible thinking to myself I've read several J.R. Thorn books maybe I'll like it. Its a negative. Plot wise and Flow wise this book was a horrible mess.. I have no idea what is going on here. Plot points just kind of came out of nowhere and swooped in.. One minute we are on the basically on the run out to save our friends from a crooked detective.. who is human.. but also stealing powers? No sense made here folks. The next minute we are in a 3some with an Incubus king.. and like literally one chapter later we have some full grown demon spawn. I don't even like our FMC, shes whiney and constantly trying to go against what she knows is her destiny.. yea she knows what her tattoos and runes mean but its never fully explained to the reader. Maybe like the author saw it all in her head but couldn't get it down on the paper quite right?
This series isn't for me.. not sure if it was the audio but pretty sure it was "all" the audio's fault. Sending this one the dueces!
It's hard to tell what I felt about this book given that I skip some parts. Or maybe reading this is not the right time. I can't say I don't like it but I can't say it's a good book. The fact that it caught my attention is, there is something in the cover. But given the cover is beautiful and the story has something, maybe I can review it some other day.
2 stars for now. When stories are being told try to make it consistent and please no cliffhanger so that we can move on to the next episode.
What it IS is confusing and annoying. The book is a hodgepodge...a potpourri...it has everything + the kitchen sink. Maybe it should be the Kitchen Sink series?
There are succubae, incubi, muses, prophesy, (a lot more) supernaturals, RAPE, mom selling her first born to witch, RAPE, mom stopping witch from taking/killing said sold newborn, mom being sent to hell, CATHOLICS, torture, imprisonment, prostitution, etc.
While all of that was going on, I noticed the ONE THING I did NOT have going on was FUN. Ugh. Confusion? Yes. Fun? No.
I appreciate that JR Thorn rereleased the ebook version with a “hey, this was one of my first novels…” notes.
Having just come off Fortune Fae Academy, this was definitely not what I was used to, but the intro helped me get in the right mind set.
The story jumps quickly from plot point to plot point, and there are places where a bit of explanation would have gone a long way to clearing things up.
I was just a little bit confused by this book. I like the idea behind it. She's a succubus that needs to connect with her 7 runes. Kind of. I think. She has a tattoo that bleeds and has 7 runes.
There are a lot of characters that we have to get to know in a short amount of time. I enjoyed most of the characters and they the reason I may read the next book.
Okay so I know it doesn't sound like it but I did enjoy this book. I just think it should have been longer and things should have been explained better. I felt like I was dropped in the middle of a first book.
A troubling blend of bad writing, poor narration and inconsistent plot, I'm only finishing this series because I'm curious to see the slim bits of world building relating to the sins. Straight off the bat, I can't recommend this series to anyone. The narration sometimes drops large plot truths that the narrator themselves are unaware of. The writing itself seems to have a lot of issues. If the author was trying to write in an alternative way, that's cool. But it is still a jumble of inconsistencies and confusing wording. The female lead does not help keep the story in line, none of the POV characters do. This, mixed with the disconnect every character has, makes it one of the most confusing lore/world building/plotted books I've read.
3.5 Stars! I enjoyed this book. It was exciting and intriguing but had a little bit of a slow start. I like like just when things were taking off it ended but that's one way to pull you into the next book for sure. Lol Can't wait to see what's in store for Sonya.
Ok I can't go on like this. Saying I got confused with this book is an understatement, not only many things are not clearly explained but also there are a lot of contradictions or changes that seemed like the author forgot what she had previously written. I will number some *Spoilers Alert* For example when she said she had healed Sarah from a gun injury when previously the book said she had been stabbed not shot, or the fact that she had said Nate's eyes were blue but after that, when they are going to NY she said his eyes are amber. the thing that made me definitely said: "stop" tho, was the fact she previously said her mother was over 500 yo when she gave birth to her and then she said her GRANDMOTHER was around 300 and I just thought: tf? That's simply not possible! I really don't like so many things not making any sense it makes it look like it was carelessly written, I can't enjoy a bool like this

Well, overall the book was great and hard to put down. However, the beginning was hard to swallow because Sonya's girlfriend was selfish. She would not accept Sonya for who and what she is, that is not a relationship. And the death of a friend, with knowledge of what would happen, just seemed wrong to me. However, once the book got passed that point, the storyline picked Yolo and the mystery began. I am happy the next book is out because it ended on a cliffhanger.
A succubus, a player in the prophecy, a pawn, a woman. Sonya is having a devil of a time. She needs to find her four or the end of the world begins. This book was interesting. I haven't read anything quite like this before. I've read pieces of it in different books, but it was cool how it was all put together here. I would recommend this book.
I really love this book it's dark, kinda twisted, and is about my favorite kind of demon. Sonya is strong and determined with the weight of the world resting on her shoulders. I love her runes on her body and the way they seem to lead her to the others she needs. This book was very well written and I highly recommend it.
This was an amazing book, from the first page to the last I hung on every word absolutely absorbed. J.R. Thorn weaved a tale of mystery and prophecy that was completely captivating, brought to life by Lia Hollands expressive narration. An amazing start to what promises to be a fantastic series, I can't wait for book 2!
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
J.R Thorn got me hooked with the Elemental Fae Academy series, it's the first thing I have ever read by her and after that, I was a goner. The next thing I started was the Fae Academy series, and I am currently in the middle of that series (it's currently ongoing) and of course, it's amazing but then I realized that there was a series that predate Fae Academy. Blood Stone series is sort of a prequel to the Fae Academy series, Blood Stone is an origin story to one of the characters from Fae Academy so of course, I had to jump in.
Succubus Sins is the first book in the Blood Stone series, it's a paranormal reverse harem that is told from multiple povs. The story follows Sonya, a conflicted succubus as she comes to terms with who she is and follows her destiny.
Sonya is a great character, she is funny, sassy, strong, and stubborn. She is very complex, Sonya grew-up knowing she was a succubus but she doesn't want to be. Sonya doesn't want to be a killer and that is exactly what happens if she sleeps with a human male however if she doesn't sleep with a male then she doesn't get what she needs to survive. So I can see how she is struggling and it kinda pulls at my heart plus with her feisty attitude I couldn't help but like her.
Sarah is Sonya's girlfriend and to say it's complicated isn't even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to describing their relationship. Sarah is supernatural but doesn't even want to comprehend what it truly means to be a succubus but Sonya tries to be who Sarah wants and it's killing her, quite literally. Sarah may seem sweet on the surface but she is very selfish and I will admit that I didn't like her at all. It took to much for her to finally own up to her part in their relationship and even then I still don't think she quite understands what Sonya went through.
As for Sonya's destiny, she is connected to the seven deadly sins and I am still not sure what is going on with that prophecy but I do know that of the seven four will be her mates. Sonya has met two of the four and let's say it wasn't love at first sight, things are once again complicated and I just wish for Sonya to get the care and love that she is looking for. The two that make an appearance in this book aren't great but I can see the good in them and am excited to see where this relationship is going.
The story is great, the mfc is trying to come to terms with who she is while figuring out what she is supposed to do all the while trying to defeat a known and unknown enemy. Lots of pieces are on the board, but I don't see the big picture yet. I do know everything is leading Sonya to her destiny but I don't know how she's going to accomplish her tasks. I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator, Lia Holland, did an excellent job of narrating the story.
Succubus Sins is just the start of Sonya's story, filled with crazy supernaturals, a defective detective, and a destiny that Sonya couldn't stop even if she wanted too. With complicated relationships, a powerful piece of jewelry, and some pretty hot backup maybe Sonya can pull it off, I can't wait to start the next book, up next is Siren Sins.
My first J.R. Thorn book was the Fortune Academy series Book 1. I haven’t made my way through all of the series yet as I didn’t check the recommended reading order. So after book 4, I’m now on the Seven Sins series even though I was able to figure out what I think was enough to have completed Fortune Academy first.
I really like J.R.’s writing but one thing is, she’s correct at the beginning of Succubus Sins where she says it was her first work and she was learning and growing. Her writing has evolved tremendously so please don’t let this first book put you off of her stories!
I feel like she has such a new look at the same old tropes and supernatural species that is different from all the cookie cutter paranormal. I generally like series and hers, so far, have been especially good to me since they are all based in the same “world”, which is a plus!
I will also say, like with all reading, pay attention to trigger warnings. About halfway through, the “villian” does some VERY vile, bloody, disturbing and hard to read …. activities. He does some earlier in the book but these after 50% seem to just affect me more. I’ve read plenty of dark, horrible books but the way J.R. Wrote these scenes almost makes my stomach turn. I’m not sure what it is or if it’s just me but understand that it’s there and could affect some.
There are quite a few MCs but it’s not too hard to follow. But if you’re looking for a mindless smex read, this isn’t for you. It has a pretty involved plot that carries on from series to series with even more new MCs in each series!
As for feeling like you’ve missed something or were dropped into the middle of the book, maybe reading Royal Covens first would be better. I don’t know since I started this way. But it’s really not difficult to follow and figure out the characters and plot over the course of each series included in this world.
“Dark has chased me all my life.” Thorn took a risk with that opening line; if she couldn’t keep the book just as intriguing from there, it’d fall flat. It does not disappoint! The writing is brilliant and the descriptives are beautiful, dark and fascinating.
I discovered Thorn when I read ‘Chasing Fate’ and I knew then I’d need to read all she has to offer. Even coming into it with that attitude, I’m not let down … and I’m easily let down / notoriously hard to please. 😏 This book though - let me tell you:
Having gone outside late at night, I didn’t see the lights, traffic, passersby, wildlife, etc. All I could see was the dark alley behind a bar in Seattle… the setting of the last scene I’d read before going out. I wondered what everyone was up to next and for hours, until this book and I met again, it was all I could think of and all I saw. And I was only a few percent of the way in!
That really kept up throughout the book. It does end on a cliffhanger but the next book is available now so that’s no big deal. Really fun, addictive read.
This book gripped me from the start and didn’t let go…
Editing/Proofing: Well done, seems professional as only a couple typos noted.
Character development: Thorn does a good job here; having read a little bit of her work prior to this book, the characters I’ve already been exposed to are on point. All characters have individual voices and personalities, something not everyone seems able to pull off.
Formatting: Super fun and very pretty. This book is definitely easy on the eyes.
Cover: Stunning. Looks professional and fits the content.
The story had a lot of promise to bad i did not like the execution. I hate Sarah with a passion since the first chapter and it got worse and worse with her behavior. The dynamics where to wishy woshy and I couldn't make rime of a lot of things while i was reading them. Wich left me guessing and hating it more. The main character lost me after she tried to win back her abusive girlfriend ( and yes it is abuse when she guilt trips her into starving to death. I hate how their relationship is written. I hate how Sarah abandoned Sylvie for years and just walzed back in like everything was fine. And again first few chapters. And she does it again so i can add threat of leaving if Sylvie does not "obey". Sarah saw that Sylvie was sick. Heck she collapsed in her arms and she doesn't realize she is killing her with her mindset.) Sorry big no go and I did not finish this book. I hate stopping in the middle, but this got just worse and worse. I loved the idea and the premise. There where a lot. Maybe if the author thought a bit about the dynamics and cut shorter on the characters in the beginning so that it there was a better overview for everyone I would have actually liked it. But like this NO. And this needs a trigger warning for abuse not the kind of read i need right now. And don't forget the random torture and repeated mention of characters we never met in the main series. I didn't know there was an important STAND ALONE prequel I HAD to read first to understand Lukas plot. Thanks but no thanks I am out
While I was listening to this book there were so many times that I just wanted to DNF it because for me it was so all over the place and I couldn’t catch up to the story, there came times that I tried to convince myself and said “it not so bad lets give it a little more time” but in the end I did DNF it .
-There was a lots of miscommunication, I mean Sonya claimed she wanted to be in a monogamous relationship with Sarah but kept cheating on her. I get it, she’s a succubus and needs sex with certain people just so she can be alive and I think this problem could’ve been solved if Sonya and Sarah communicated with each other and lets say Sarah still couldn’t accept Sonya then they should’ve broken up not dragging on a toxic relationship which harmed both of them and caused this many unnecessary problems.
-in my opinion this was not a reverse harem/why choose romance because Sonya just fucked whoever crossed her path I don’t know, the reason I think this maybe cause I literally did not understand the plot.
-the whole four mates and 7 sins aspect of story is so confusing to me I have no clue what was going on, there were so many characters and everything was happening at once.
Overall the authors idea had a lot of potential but was not well written or maybe was in need of a very thorough editing, I couldn’t wrap my head around the story or the characters and their actions.
ONE AMAZING READ!!! Oh man, talk about spinning. What can I say this is one exciting start to this new hosts of chaos. Thorn is like a tornado that rips through and you can't move to save your life. She has a style all her own and she wields it better than the magic shes conjuring in her new characters. She has this down to a science. I want her 4 runes to play with. The characters and scenes were intriguing, complex, realistic and a little on the odd side. Hey, I said a little. Its not like they can hear me. Geez. So we have the main major boss herself in town learning all about her gifts and how to bring 4 beasties to their knees. Ok, back to the story. Its starting to get real and she is one bad ass to pull it off. The characters are all very interesting to say the least. And I'm not just talking about the her guys. We do have other sups out there. I can't wait to see whats coming at us next. So if it comes to a show down between her and evil incarnate who do you think will win? Oh, right not completely immortal. Great job keeping me on my toes and up trying to figure things out. You're not letting me too close to try and find my answers. Thats ok. Incredible job Thorn, I love the way your bringing this show roaring to life. Fantastic job and thanks for sharing this little gem with us.
Succubus Sins is relatively a fast paced read. We meet quite a few characters in a short amount of time, but with the way the book flows it isn't overwhelming. The writing is brilliant and the descriptive are beautiful, dark and fascinating. In this we have Angels, demon spawn a succubus king. I would recommend this book.
this book is confusing AF. FMC is a Succubus whos mom sold her 1st born yo a witch for a blood stone. at 16yo witch came to collect. mom wasnt having it did a spell. seven rooms transferred from the witch to the fmc. they're all different sins and three of the rooms were representing people that will affect her life and then four of them are her partners.
1st is her muse GF Sarah. who at the start of the series thinks that the FMC can feed from her, which isn't the case. FMC needs to feed breaks up with Sarah & has sex & feeds from their human friend David in a bar alleyway which apparently takes some of their life force & shortens their life. where a detective? Anderson watches. Anderson takes David brings him to a abandoned research facility (where Luke is). FMC goes to a nun whos safe keeping Blood Stone. then goes to Incubus King Derek to help recharge BS. will do if she has a 3some with his wife (S) who is a lesbian? & has some powers that arent explained. they want a girl? Incubus powers are only inherited thru the women/mother. all 3 apparently become parents to it. meets Nate who is Derek/S son. Nate and Luke are 2 of FMC Partners. also a fight with Anderson who steals Sarah's powers , Luke escapes from research center... idk its confusing and its only the 1st book.

This first volume of a trilogy moves at a fast clip. We get Sonya, a succubus with a destiny, who is trying to stay true to her girlfriend Sarah, but she needs to find her personal 4 (her "harem" if you will). She meets two of the four men in this book while trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
I appreciated a heroine who had relationships with both men and women. It was refreshing to read this since most RH books are so male focused. Plus, a succubus would be more than likely to have a variety of relationships (think Bo from Lost Girl).
The performance was good, the kind that keeps the story moving without drawing attention to itself. For me as a listener, that's what I want.
This is a good book for those who love urban fantasy that focuses on different supernaturals than usual and who would be open to reverse harems. For some readers/listeners, the FF content is a do not want, so be warned that it does unapologetically exist here.
To any listeners who might be interested in this, I suggest getting the omnibus edition to get the trilogy in one volume. (It would save your Audible credits.)
Disclaimer: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Sonya is a succubus in love with a muse. Unfortunately, the muse is a female, so she can't feed off of her. She's already lost Sarah once and will lose her again if she is unfaithful, so she starves herself to the point of death when she accidentally and desperately feeds on a friend. This leads her on a quest to save him which also leads her on the path of an end-of-the-world prophecy spelled out by the 7 runes of deadly sins tattooed across her stomach.
This could have been so much better. The concept is a good one. The execution is a bit of a mess. It's not cohesive story-telling. It's choppy and not detailed enough where it should be. The characters seem like good people but they are not good to Sonya. Sarah, her lover-muse denies Sonya's nature and places expectations on her that will kill her. One of her men hates succubi on principal, the other is using her for his father's purposes. And his father is the worst. Sonya seems like the only person that puts others above herself which is funny considering how awful she is supposed to be as a succubus.
I do plan to read the next book to see if the guys do better. If not, hot sex doesn't make up for not treasuring their girl. Especially, when the fate of the world might be on her shoulders.
So I never intended to actually read this entire thing in one day. But that's what lazy Sundays are for, right?
I suppose that would say something about the story as well.
Succubus Sins is relatively a fast paced read. Which in this case is a very good thing, in my opinion at least. We meet quite a few characters in a short amount of time, but with the way the book flows it isn't overwhelming. There are definitely moments that probably could have went into further detail, but that would just be my preference. I'm sure more will be explained in the future books, those of which I cannot wait for. Especially after the end. Which I totally do not like that looming over my head!!!
I feel I should state that I am not typically drawn to these types of series. I've read a few Laurell K Hamilton (Merry Series) in my past.
Holy lots of information thrown at you all at once Batman!
Yeesh, this book was a rollercoaster. Constantly whipping you around with all the information that is thrown at you throughout the entire book. So much was given that I just don't know what to do with it all.
The jist of this book, in my opinion from what I've gathered, is Sonya's destiny is connected to the seven deadly sins. The sins represent people. She has runes on her belly that are for each sin. However, four of her sins are going to help her fulfill her destiny. While three are kind of just one time helpers. In this book you meet two of her major sins and two (I believe) of her minor sins.
This was pretty good, while also being super confusing at the same time with the info dump. I'll try out the second book to see how I feel about the series. (:
Book 1 in the series. J.R wrote strong characters that will take you on a ride. This is an Urban fantasy face pace , detailed Reverse Harem story . The heroine is Sonya. Sonya is not your usual Succubus , she has a girlfriend that is a muse , Sonya wants to be faithful to her , but after a while Sonya needs to feed or die !. Sonya can’t die , Sonya mother told her what Sonya part of saving the world Is But Sonya needs to find her four mates that activate the four runes. . There are other men that will connect to her other runes, one is the Incubus king, he has other plans for Sonya Sonya finds 2 of her mates who will help her save the world. Grab it and see who the 2 are
Lia Holland Performance is strong, her tone for each character is great you can tell who each character is
When I first saw this book, I just knew I was going to like it. But I didn't expect that I would LOVE this so much. I am so excited about this series. I stayed up all night listening to it. It was such a great story. One that I have never heard before, and I read a lot of paranormal/fantasy type stuff. And the narrator was AMAZING. The differences in the voices were perfect. I was so impressed. I love this and I hope there are a TON more books to come!
