Perfect for fans new and old alike, an official new chapter in the LEGO Ninjago universe begins here.
Far away from Ninjago City, a village is terrorized by a mysterious new threat when they’re saved by a stranger with incredible power known as... Garmadon, Lord of Destruction?!
Has Garmadon turned over a new leaf since his disappearance, or is this just the first step in his master plan of finally defeating Master Wu and the ninja forever?
The first collaboration between LEGO and Skybound kicks off from rising star writer/artist Tri Vuong (EVERYDAY HERO MACHINE BOY)!
My name is Tri Vuong, a comic book author based in Toronto, Ontario. Sometimes I write stories that other artists draw and sometimes I draw stories that other writers write but usually I do both.
My notable works include: "Everyday Hero Machine Boy", "Ninjago: Garmadon", "Anchovie Akiyama", and "The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn" (now archived on this site!).
More importantly, I have two dogs: Digby, a giant-sized Corgi, and Leo, a Golden Retriever who thinks he is a giant-sized Corgi.
Ignoring the fact this is definitely for children, it was a fine short easy read.
I am very much not a fan of the art style. The oversimplified lego design made it hard to differentiate the characters or obtain basic clues about them. Like how I didn’t know one of the girls was her mom until it was explicitly said, and how the child of the story looks the same as everyone else. And I know it’s lego, so of course the style is lego, but this style I think try’s to achieve a more kid-Lego look which makes it not good. Especially because the Lego look is already kid-ish. Also just some of the panels I found ugly, there were sweet ones mind you, but I would have rather had a realistic art style or one similar to the Papercutz brand of ninjago comics, and have actual Lego looking characters.
The story was fun, some parts didn’t hold to Garmadon’s personality in my opinion but the overall story grew a lot on me in the 100 pages. And there were some real sweet scenes. Overall I think it took time to get used too, once I was mid way through I started to like it a lot more and I can imagine me liking the series as it continues.
Very nice, very nice I did love the way Garmadon was characterized in this. He has always been an interesting character and of course, he has always been angsty. (You know I’m always here for the angst) The art was really funky and cute. Usually, comics in Lego style can feel stiff and awkward, but this one felt so fluid and expressive. The Lego vibe really helped the feel of the story, much like it does in Monkie Kid, and I almost can’t picture the story having the same feel without the art style. Very fun
8/10 the cover art in this was literally so amazing though like Chapter 4 “Snake in the Garden” absolutely slayed (that whole issue was really good actually and I may buy it hmm) AND A N D the bit where someone said to Garmadon “is that really how it happened or is that what you wish had happened?” and “Did he really say that or do you just wish someone had warned you?” like BRO OUCH WHY DO THE NINJAGO BOOKS HIT SO HARD DUDE THEY ALWAYS COME FOR MY LITERAL THROAT
