Despite the fact that I am far from being a beginner, I was pretty excited to read this book. It is well written and easy to read, but I did feel like too many topics were covered in an incredibly small amount of pages. This book should have been at least 400 pages to actually be useful. I know it’s a beginners book, but so many topics were introduced and barely touched upon. There isn’t enough information on each topic to really get you going. I also found the writing to be a little repetitive at times - still good, but repetitive.

Maybe I’m wrong or being too harsh. I didn’t have books like this when I was learning. (Way to make myself sound older than I am, right?) The short beginner books that I read were detailed and descriptive, touching on topics just isn’t enough for me. I need depth. Since this book was meant to be a “beginner’s guide to practical magic and spell casting,” I really think it should have focused on that - not chakras, multiple kinds of divination, dream interpretation, and herbal remedies. Yes, those things are often tied to magick and spellcrafting, but it’s just too much information for one book. The actual spellcrafting portion of this book is only 25 pages. 25 out of 200 pages are on one of two primary purposes of the book. That’s not enough and it’s not good enough for me.

I received this book for free through Callisto Publisher’s Club in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a grab bag of a book for me. There were a lot of things all smashed together so it felt like some things weren't as well explained as they could be. Some things in here I really liked but other things just weren't of my interest. There were also parts of the book that were I didn't really like some of the syntax and phrasing, it just felt off. I kind of want to go through all of the individual sections and give my brief thoughts on each of them.

Chakras- I hadn't previously read anything on chakras but I had heard about some of them before. This section was fine, informative but a bit brief.
Auras- My thoughts for the chakras can also be applied to the auras. This was interesting information and I will have to think about it further.
Crystals- Crystals are interesting. Like all lists of crystals in books of magic, some stones overlap but there are always different stones and different elements of them being explored.
Tarrot- I am interested in doing a further study of tarot but my cards haven't come in yet, so this section was fascinating to me. I also saw some interesting parallels to runic divination in the tarot spreads.
Astrology- I actually learned a lot in this section. I have always been interested in my zodiac sign but had not really delved into it. In this section, I learned that the sign most people use is their sun sign, but that everyone also has a moon sign. I really like my moon sign, so this may have been one of my favorite sections.
Palmistry- I didn't really get this section. I don't think reading palms is for me.
Sigils & Talismans- This section was just ok, not really much to say about it personally.
Dream Interperetation- Not for me.
Spirit Guides- For some reason this made me uncomfortable. I think I'll stay away from spirit guides, I may not be at a point in my life where I'm ready to meet them.
Plant Magic- This was a good introductory to plant-based magic. Very informative and simple.
Spells- These were all simple spells that I found to be ok.

Practical Magic For Beginners, by Maggie Haseman

I really enjoyed this book. I wish it had been available when I started on my journey. It has something for everyone and more. I found the charts in each section and or the catalog of elements to be especially helpful for both the very new to magic and to those who are more experienced.
The exercises after each category get you excited while getting you started. It will give you a feel for that particular element and if it’s something you want to dive into more.
Practical Magic For Beginners gives you insight into each element of magic in a easy to understand way. If you were just curious about magic before Maggie’s book, after reading her book you will be hooked. You can tell a lot of thought and love went into writing this book.
I was provided with a free copy for review and will be ordering 2 more copies for my girls who are drawn to this path and want to see what magic the universe has to offer and don’t know where to start.
I am sure that I will be referring to this book and suggesting it to many along my path.

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I'll be frank… I think this book was miss-titled. I went into this book expecting a guide to, well, witchcraft - spellwork, incantations, maybe a little herbalism, something about the history of witchcraft, moon phases… basically, the usual witchcraft kit of information give or take some personal views.

That isn't what this is.

The book is well written, incredibly thorough, if lacking much of a personal touch, and covers a wide variety of topics - don't get me wrong. It's a useful book to have on your shelves… it's just not so much about "magic" and witchcraft as it is general mysticism. Very little in this book is about the topics mentioned earlier. If you want to learn about Tarot, crystal healing, palm reading, or divination, this is a great resource, and those practices can certainly be an aspect of witchcraft… but recognize going in what this book is, and what it isn't.

It's a good book for what it is. As a practitioner and teacher of the Craft, what I LOVE MOST about this book is warnings where appropriate (example, before you use such-and-such herb, speak with your doctor). This is a simple, easy to grasp grimoire that will help anyone new to modern approaches to energy work &/or magical practice get started in a thoughtful way.
IMPORTANT! I've seen a lot of confusion in reviews on different websites about who this book is or isn't for. Yet it's right there in the title - "for the new mystic". There are those who seem to think this book is aimed only at witches, or only at pagans, or only at Wiccans. If you're in that boat, get quiet and listen to the waves around you. Once you've done that - read the title again. Can your self-identification as some kind of energy/magic user include the words "new mystic"? If not, then there's no need for you to read this book. For everyone else, give this one a read!

4.5/5 A little bit of everything!

This book has a little bit of everything. I think it’s a great staff to a magical life and has some great information.

I would have given it 5 stars if I could see the charts on the e-book a bit better.

I took my time reading it and spent a couple days going through each section to make sure everything sunk in and I thought it was great and totally relatable. I absolutely enjoyed the book and would be happy to purchase the physical book for future reference.

I would most definitely recommend to any baby witch and anyone interested about learning a few things about the magical life.

A concise and straightforward book of little theoretical but probably some practical value. Most of the early chapters simply give the reader a most basic introduction to a "magical" topic (e.g. crystals, tarot, auras etc) and then the later chapters give quick simple instructions for "spells", e.g. "put some basil and epsom salts and rose petals in a blender and then put it your bath on Saturday under a waning moon to help forgive those that have wronged you and let go of their negative influence on you". Stuff like that.

The title of this book says it all! Before reading this book I have never read or researched anything about mysticism. This book is a great introduction to the elements of magic. It reads well and is also very informative. I read the book straight though and will probably continue to go back to the book as a reference. I downloaded the book on kindle but may recommend a hardcopy to flip through to chapters later to look at some of the charts and pictures.

Nice Section on Tarot

This is a very basic introduction. It provides rather superficial coverage on a number of topics including astrology, palm is try, spell casting, crystals and herbs. Not much depth but enough to get a novice started. My favorite portion was the section on tarot. Her descriptions of the meanings were non-stop threatening, usable and helpful. The less experience you have the better this book is. It is accessible written and nicely illustrated.

I really enjoyed this book. It touches base on A LOT of topics but doesn't go into great detail. Beings this is a beginners I had no issue with the lack of depth on most issues. I liked that this book covered so much. It gives you a little bit of everything to help you decide what you want to delve into further. It definitely sparked my interest in things that I would not have considered studying had I not read it here.

Well written, easy to use guide that introduces new practitioners to many different topics. I didn't agree with all of her views and I didn't find all of the topics to be my cup of tea, but that's okay. They were explained well, and I felt like I got a good enough understanding of them to make that decision definitively.

Love The Pictures!

The pictures and graphs in this book are super helpful! Most of this information I already knew, but I got a few good notes from this. If you're looking for information on chakras and meditation, this is definitely a great book for that.

Let me start by saying I don't consider myself to be a witch or into magic all that much ... BUT this book is the best for those who are starting to explore that side of themself. The author's writing is so approachable. Not once when reading this did I feel this was out of my comfort zone. I love how easy the exercises, rituals, and spells are to do. Magic isn't just for those born with a special gift or real-life Harry Potters ... magic can be done by people just like me. I can incorporate these practices into my everyday life. You don't have to read the book cover to cover (unless you want to!) you can skip around and focus on aspects that appeal to you in the moment. I think my favorite section is the "Plants for Every Purpose" - I can use herbs from my garden! I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking to explore the magic that you can bring to everyday life.
