Aurora’s life is perfectly mundane. She has a job she hates, an ex that ran her out of her hometown, and the highlight of her week is Monday breakfast with her best friend. That changes when Aurora starts dreaming of a woman. A woman who Aurora falls head over heels for. She knows the romance that develops between them isn’t real, but the dreams make life so much better that she hurries to bed every night…until she discovers that her dream woman isn’t imaginary. Her name is Leela and she is in a coma.
Aurora must risk everything—her job, apartment, friends, and her sanity—to save Leela, a woman she’s only ever met in her mind. But in order to help, Aurora must convince Leela’s neurologist and parents that she and Leela have a bond that transcends the physical plane.
Can Aurora fight through a progressively nightmarish landscape to wake Leela? And if Leela wakes, will she recognize Aurora as the one who saved her? As the one Leela said she loved? Their dream-relationship might not be real, but if there is any possibility of making her dreams come true, Aurora has to try.

Once I climbed over the huge obsticle of people talking to each other in dreams (WTF?) I was surprised to find I enjoyed this story - though again ended too quickly &, to make matters worse - "Questions for Book Club" at the end suggested readers say where the MCs were in 12 months!! That's your job, Serena J Bishop!
I really enjoyed this up until about halfway-to-three quarters through. I just feel like towards the end all the magic got sucked out, after such a build up - the payoff felt anti-climatic.
I LOVED both characters immensely, their witty banter and backgrounds, and the unique premise of them meeting in dreams while Leela was in a coma, was truly amazing and touching. But once Aurora came to the hospital after she realized her 'dream woman' was a real living breathing person who was in a coma, it became tedious and the charm dissipated.
I also struggled with everyone choosing *not* to tell Leela about this strange phenomenon after she woke. I get she needed to work on getting better in many ways, but not telling her and leaving poor Aurora out in the cold like that seemed cruel. Leela's response when she found out Aurora and others had lied to her was understandable - but went into unnecessary drama territory for me.
The writing was brilliant and evocative, I just struggled with some of the frustrating story choices. I would recommend the authors other novel 'Leveled' over this one.
Aurora meets the woman of her dreams – literally in her dreams – and they are so vivid they almost feel real. When she comes across an article about a woman in a coma, Leela, Aurora gets the shock of her life and hurries to try and help both in reality, and through her dreams, but getting people to believe you know a stranger isn’t easy. Aurora is desperate to do all she can to help, fighting to wake Leela and help her recover so their dreams can perhaps become a reality.
This story was so clever, the way the two main characters Aurora, and Leela’s lives became intertwined through the powerful medium of dreams. I adore stories where something that seems impossible, but is a wonderful thing is explored and Serena has done just this. Sharing dreams and using what you know to help a stranger is such a giving thing to do (even if it was a teeny bit selfish on Aurora’s part) she wasn’t expectant, and only wanted to hope and try. I was amazed by the vividness of the dreams, the beautiful imagery, and the deep meaning behind the story and actions of the characters, and loved every moment of it.
I really enjoyed the story, and just hope to see more from Aurora and Leela one day.
Aurora really was the central focus of the story, and I adored her character. She was such a kind, sweet, caring woman, with a lot of heart. Her imagination and spirit were captivating, and when she learned who Leela was and how she might be able to help, her reaction and actions were beyond admirable. I adored her moral spirit too. She handled the whole situation very well, and respectful of Leela and her family at all times.
Leela was a totally different spirit, fun and flirty, and really just added a hint of humour to the relationship between her and Aurora. She was totally unique, and an interesting character that I’d like to get to know better.
Fun, and a bit different. A really beautiful, heart-warming story.
Oh my goodness, I couldn’t put this book down. Like literally having my partner talking to my face while I secretly devoured more pages under the table. From the first moment, I was entranced by Bishop’s words, her ability to seamlessly meld the magical and mundane in a sweet, believable and sometimes heart rending narrative that made me smile and tear up in equal measures.
The mains are both fascinating, well-characterized and extremely lovable in their own way, but the secondary characters also have vibrant lives of their own. From both of the MCs parents who could not be more different, but loving and complex in their own ways, to the scientists who help our two out with stunningly written tech that boggles the mind even more than the paranormal aspect of the story. Even the best friends and hired help are written soulfully and sympathetically.
Bishop has a way of breathing life into every moment of the story, whether it’s the jarring non-linear feel of a dream sequence, a life and death struggle in freezing water, or a simple breakfast ritual between friends, the reality of every moment packs a punch. Ironically, the pure description of simple, daily moments makes the fantastic events completely believable. I felt so much for both our MCs, and I have to admit I fell in love with Leela along with Aurora. I love *love* that neither of them has a car and the other carbon-footprint-reducing lifestyles they chose and the daily reality of that.
There is tension and pain, experience and salvation along with a quirky, sweet narrative that is fantastic, professional and polished all at the same time. This novel reads like a delicious beverage smoothly sliding down your throat. This author has a command of the English language that is effortless and precise as a surgeon’s scalpel. I feel like this book has added a level of meaning to my life. Aurora and Leela will live with me for some time, I truly believe. They will give me strength and good advice when I need it. I honestly can’t say goodbye to either of them for a while yet.
I absolutely can’t recommend this book enough. Never once did it drag. I loved their communication, the sweetness of their interactions, even the angst and tension. This book will make you think, it will push you to reevaluate your priorities, realize a lot of things about consent, and maybe even make you hug a baby goat. I know I totally wanted to. Bonus points for two non-white MCs with realistic representation. Nobody’s skin was a food, neither was “exotic” and both were fresh and real and true.
My rating: five of the brightest stars in our galaxy and beyond ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I received this book from the author and publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Dream a Little Dream of Me! Super sweet and wonderful, this story is about a lovely, caring, kind and selfless woman named Aurora. Her weird and wonderful dreams lead her to the most amazing woman she has ever met. Sexy, smart and fun, this dream girl turns out to be much more than Aurora expected, she is real and in a lot of trouble! Aurora is determined to save her dream lover no matter the cost. This book is so… wow. I loved every single second of it. It was so well written, it was engaging, held my interest throughout, and I could not get enough of it. My promise to read just a chapter or two before bed turned out to be an I can’t put it down experience and I had to read it all, I just had to know what happened next!! These women are such an amazing couple. They just made me happy and content and I loved seeing them get to know each other in their dreams and while awake. This will become one of the books I turn to when I need some contentment and warm fuzzies.
What a lovely book! It has an interesting premise: two women meet in their dreams. That was a fascinating and novel approach to two women meeting. The pacing worked well, too. Just as I was getting tired of the dream adventures, the author switched to “real life.” It intrigued me to see how Aurora walked a fine line between wanting to do the right thing, like informed consent, and wanting more from the relationship. Aurora gave up a lot to help Leela. The characters are both women of color with very different backgrounds, but their relationship works. The secondary characters are drawn well, too. I liked that the obligatory conflict was pretty minimal and resolved quickly. If two people are meant to be and they are both caring and thoughtful, they can overcome the obstacle in this book. Very enjoyable book.
This book had a really cute concept. Watching Aurora and Leela fall for one another twice, was sweet. It all happened rather quickly though... so it felt like there was something missing in their story. I just can't pinpoint what it is, I just know when I finished the book I wanted more.
Serena J Bishop did a really fantastic job weaving this tale around a really incredible experience. I was immediately drawn into the story of Aurora and Leela and I read late into the night to find out how it was going to turn out for them. Aurora’s kindness and self deprecating humor is so on point and her determination to help Leela, a woman she’s only met in her dreams is admirable. Their road to happiness is long with some twists and turns but the journey is so worth the ride!
As soon as I read the synopsis I knew this was one of the kinds of stories I love to read, and it didn't disappoint. Love the mystical backdrop of the storyline that connected Aurora and Leela, leading them to find each other. Also loved the green aspects of the story that had Aurora riding a bike vs driving a vehicle and also the natural products that Aurora made on her goat ranch. I can tell a lot of medical research went into the compelling story and gave it extra depth. Give it a read, you won't be sorry.
This was a quick and fun little jaunt into magical realism romance. The characters are cute, the responses to therapy are baffling (such a low bar), and the situation gets pretty awkward when your dream girl is literally in a coma while appearing in your dreams. Cute, fluffy, and a nice little break from the heavier stuff I've been reading.
Absolutely loved this book! Very creative storyline that I will remember. I loved this unique twist to a romance. The main character was so wonderful and so easy to root for. Both main characters were great.
Leela is a goat farmer with a few secrets. She ends up in a coma after being hit by a truck while saving a little boy. Aurora is a financial analyst with a job she hates. She ran away from her home town after her ex-girlfriend spread lies about her. Aurora begins having dreams about a woman. She starts to develop real feelings for this dream woman, and then finds out, she might actually be real.
This was the first time I have read anything by Serena J. Bishop. I was extremely impressed. The writing was fantastic. I love how she handled the diversity of the characters. I don’t think I have ever encountered a book with an interracial relationship what did not include a white character, so this was refreshing. The story was interesting and kept me engaged through the entire book. Aurora and Leela are so good together. Even with everything they went through, their chemistry was there through it all, both in the dreams and in real life. They really are soulmates.
There were two things I would have changed about this book. First, the conflict at the end of the book, I feel like it should have occurred at around the 75% mark. They resolved the conflict too quickly. The second issue, I really, really would have liked an epilogue.
Overall a great book and if it were allowed I would have given it 4.5 stars.
This book is quite a slow burn, the story idea is intriguing and the concept appears to be well thought out and researched. The characters are interesting and well developed and the romance is sweet and heart warming.
What’s sweet and delightful book! My first from the author but not my last. I was hesitant after reading the blurb but knowing there was a second book with the same characters made me start and what a good decision it was. Leela and Aurora are so beautiful together, the story is entertaining and the second characters the perfect company for these two women who fall in love in the most amazing way.
Such a beautiful story! The trust in one's self Aurora has, and the strength she possess to help Leela is heartwarming. Definitely worth more than 5 stars. A favorite!
This is the first book I read by Serena J. Bishop and I liked it very much. It captivated me from the beginning and couldn’t stop until the end.
Aurora isn’t very happy with her life, it is boring and ordinary. Suddenly she starts having these intense dreams with a beautiful amazing woman. She lives for those moments when she goes to bed and be with the woman of her dreams…literally. Aurora doesn’t know if she is real, because she can't even remember her name. As the dreams intensify, the woman remembers her name, Leela. Aurora has fallen hard for Leela, imagine her surprise when she discovers she is real, but in a coma. She’ll do anything to save her. Will Leela wake up? Will she remember Aurora?
It is a beautiful story that I enjoyed very much. It’s told from Aurora’s POV and it turns into a great adventure, where Aurora will challenge everything and everyone for Leela. Her love even will defy the laws of nature and science.
Both characters are very lovable, and I liked very much the development of their story.
I’d like to recommend this book and invite everyone to discover the story around Aurora and Leela.
I received an ARC copy of the book and voluntarily leaving my review.
This was a very interesting book, when I started it I didn’t know if I was going to enjoy it, but I loved it. When aurora was in her dreams you could feel the pain along with her and the peace and love that she felt.
I never read anything from this writer. I just happen to see a book called “Miracles” and reading the summary I realized their were two books before this. Starting from the beginning 2019 with “Dreams”. I loved it. Aurora is such a special person and was treated unfairly in her hometown after a bad breakup. Now in another state and working at a company that pushes frozen stuff, who basically misuses her. But she does work with her best friend Stacy(a man). Leela is a goat farmer who makes lotions as other items. She and her mother own the business but both her parents are doctors and are disappointed in her choices. When Leela jumps in to save a little boy from a trucking backing up, she gets hit instead. Now Leela is in a coma with severe injuries. Aurora who’s grandmother gave her a dream catcher, which is now hanging over her bed, is having really specific and continuous dreams about the same women. These two lives intertwine to such a sweet love story. Hope the next one continues the great writing.
Leela lives in and co-owns a farm where she raises goats. When she tries to save a boy's life, she is hit and goes into a coma. Aurora lives in a different city. She feels miserable at work. Somehow, she finds her “happiness” when she starts having dreams with a woman she doesn't know. In some moments, it's kind of heartbreaking to see a woman loving another woman who doesn't know if she is going to make it and, even if she does, doesn't know she exists. I liked the story, a lot. It's a love story through the eyes of just one woman but it is so well developed that you hardly notice that. Aurora's character is kind, strong, romantic, funny, stubborn. She leaves everything for something / someone she strongly believes in. I highly recommend this book.
There are good books, great books, and then books like this one. Ones that move you, pull you in, make you feel for the characters, and want the best for them. And have an intriguing premise.
Dreams was all of these, and more. I really, really loved the story, and it was one that I couldn't put down. The relationship between Leela and Aurora, the dreams, and then all of the complications once it became apparent that there really was something going on. There were wonderful moments, touching moments, and so much to enjoy.
This is a beautiful story, soulmates esk really, that is told beautifully, woven well, and had me hooked from start to finish.
Well I've discovered that I'm a big fan of dreams related books that's for sure. I haven't read from this author before but I'll pay attention to what she'll write. Leela and Aurora are really great MCs and this story was so very beautifully unveiled and developed, I loved the consent part since it was indeed a particular situation. Well anyway I loved this book even if has some minor scary parts lol I really loved this story though and I'll read it again
I absolutely loves this book and the integration of Native American beliefs. The idea of people being connected is something I really hope exists. Ms. Bishop did an amazing job of painting a scene and developing characters with complex dimensions. There were bumps and turns that just kept you wanting more of the story and cheering for the main characters.
Dreams is a funny, sweet novel about two women who meet in dreams - and fall in love - while one is in a coma. The story combines science and mysticism effectively, and the characters are well-drawn. Overall I found this to be an engaging story with humor and heart. Also goats.
I really wish I liked this book more. It’s not a bad book, but it’s not the best book. It was engaging at times but there were times when the story just felt like it was dragging.
Aurora works at Miscellaneous Everything, an Amazon-esque store if I had to guess, as a financial analyst (I believe) and she hates her job. She also can’t go back home because of something that occurred there with her ex. Soon after visiting her parents and inheriting her grandmother’s dreamcatcher she begins to dream of a woman. And not just vague dreams. Detailed dreams that feel real and have continuity. She begins to fall in love with this woman even though she knows she’s a dream. But she’s not. Her name is Leela and she’s in a coma after getting hit by a car.
Aurora is a genuinely sweet and likeable main character. She loves her best friend and her family. She wants to work somewhere “greener” so that she can help the world. It’s nice and she seems like someone who would be nice to be friends with in real life. Until the end we don’t get to spend a whole lot of time with Leela, but she still seems very nice. When we see her in the book, and in the dreams, she feels authentic and big-hearted. She loves her animals and what she makes on her farm. She does have some family issues and a past that she’s not proud of, a past that she doesn’t like to disclose to others.
There are several side characters including both sets of parents, friends of both of them, and some of Leela’s doctors. The characters all had separate identities and they were more likeable than I expected. The doctors were easy to like and the friends were loveable, but I didn’t expect to like Leela’s parents. They are rough around the edges, but they mean well and just have issues with communicating and discerning what their daughter needed from them.
I have a couple of main issues with this book, but they likely aren’t going to stop me from reading the sequel(s). One issue is that Aurora seems to have insta-love for Leela. She falls for a woman in a dream and I just find it a bit insane that she would be willing to drop everything, give up everything in order to try and bring Leela back. My other issue is the parts after Leela wakes up. I understand why the decided to go down the route they did with what they told Leela, but I just feel like there might have been a better way to handle Aurora’s being there.
If you want a read that has a happy ending and a sequel coming out later this year, go for it. It’s enjoyable if unrealistic and the characters are interesting.
This story will test your imagination and sqeeze your heart.
Lela and Aurora meet in the most magical way possible. They got to know each other before they ever met. If that is not enough to make you read their story, they have a palpable connection that you can feel. This is just a great creative hook up with suspense, lots of drama and the best love story. Read the blurb but just read this and enjoy. I am ready for the next part of their story.
As a scientist I had some reservations that I was going to be able to visualize the concept and the story. I mean it's happened before since my creativity is not that great, but this book is just beautifully written. Easy to read and enjoy, the story just flows, and you go with it. I loved it and I can't wait for the next ones!
Serena Bishop's debut novel "Dreams" weaves together science and the unknown of dreams and human connection. Serena exposes the strain we often put on ourselves when we structure our goals around the expectations of others. It was a unique read and a fresh reminder to live your best life. Pick up this book to begin a journey with Aurora and Leela!
This is an amazing story. Some paranormal aspects interspersed with lots of questioning, the story and romance are solid. I loved this. It's very well written and the main characters are believable. I highly recommend it.
